The guy all beat up in the VF3 TB commercial is MMA fighter Rickson Gracie, who had just headlined two major shows at the Tokyo Dome and was super famous in Japan for beating up pro wrestlers in real fights.
I love the piece of trivia that Ken Masters got his last name from the gi joe reskin toy line so he wasn't confused with ken from barbie. And that last name is canon to the games.
Another piece of tidbit: That Nakoruru actress from the first Samurai Shodown JP commercials is none other than the PteraRanger Pink from Zyuranger herself, Reiko Chiba!
Not to mention that Reiko Chiba also went as far to be the official voice of Cham Cham in Samurai Shodown II/Shin Samurai Spirits up until Bushido Retsuden (aka Samurai Shodown RPG).
And she was in the Fatal Fury movie! Once as herself, meeting Joe Higashi after his fight "Are you really her?" and once as "Nakoruru" at Duck King's club. In the dub, she was voiced by Trish Ledoux, who was a bigwig in the anime industry at the time.
Fun fact: The red coat lady in the Art of Fighting commercial was played by famous singer Hamasaki Ayumi. And she might be supposed to represent Yuri in that ad, considering she also voiced Yuri in the AOF OVA.
I believe in the SamSho ad, Reiko Chiba is playing Nakoruru, who she voices in the movie and plays herself in the Fatal Fury anime movie, as well as Nakoruru again and even provides Mai’s singing voice, you may also know Reiko as PteraRanger, aka the Pink Ranger, in Zyuranger, which obviously gets adapted as Power Rangers
I truly think this should be a constant on your channel Matt; not just covering fighting game commercials or game ads, but all game commercials and ads from our nostalgia days =D
my fav video game ad was the Tekken 4 "real life scenarios" one with the life bars, where the office jerk gropes the lady inappropriately and she slaps him and effectively destroys his life bar, and the cat getting stuck in the cat flap. all gold on display here though
They referenced virtua fighter in Bayonetta, by giving Bayo Akira’s signature Tetsuzankou attack as a skill she can unlock. In the first Bayonetta game, if you get a Perfect Platinum score in a fight, and finish it by using Tetsuzankou, Bayonetta will say Akira’s catch phrase.
9:38 that was the bonus round "Rite Of Physical Fortification". Succesfully finishing it extended your life bar. There were two other bonus rounds that extended your spirit bar and gave you access to your Super Move.
If I remember correctly, Tatsunoko was able to get the rights to all of their IPs back a few years ago, for their 55th Anniversary. Theoretically speaking, Capcom could re-release TvC if they wanted to, Hakushon Daimou and all!
I wish there was a Tobal commercial, since it would be a chance to see Toriyama's glorious chicken man in a promo. Guess Square spent the publicity budget on the FF7 demo discs (which paid off)
I've said it before, I'll say it again: my fav era of video game commercials is PS1. They're strange, hilarious and 90s as hell. I never get sick of them.
These commercials are fun to watch. If you get to do another one like this, here are my suggestions: Mortal Monday (Mortal Kombat) You’ll go blind, Jeffery (Street Fighter Alpha 2 US) Unleash Your Ultimate (Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3) No Broadcast, No Pay TV, No Arena (Super Smash Bros teaser ad) Happy Together (Super Smash Bros.) Settle it in Smash! (Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS)
I remember when Mario was in a Got Milk commercial. Are there enough "video game characters advertising something other than video games" kind of commercials to make a video out of?
"Oh my God, Road Rash!" I loved that game back in the day. Kinda surprised it hasn't gotten a current era reboot; with the closest thing being a mobile game 15 years ago.
Highly recommend the live action advert for MK Mythologies. It uses the same costumes as the game's FMV, but was clearly directed by someone entirely different (presumably someone competent), since it looks like MK crossed with Se7en, rather than a porn parody of MK Conquest, which the actual MK Mythologies FMV scenes resembled (I do love them in their own way though, I'm a strong advocate for bringing back live-action FMV!).
If you decide to do a second one down the road (either for fighters or a general one), and I don't think anyone mentioned it yet, but since its fighting game related and all, there's a Bushido Blade commercial/ad with a nice punchline at the end.
That guy at 23:06, on the right. I found out about him just yesterday because he had one line in an episode of The Sopranos, then he put together a comedy song on RUclips about it (called "One Line on the Sopranos"). One of the writers saw it and it led to him getting a bigger role in Boardwalk Empire. But I think we all know his peak is that Dead or Alive commercial.
I always think of the magazine one with the fleshy, button shaped, nightmare pillow things around the lady. Someone at Sony was coked out of their mind.
I remember that KoF commercial because of Ryo's "I don't know what you're talking about..." which would pop into my head every so often, had all but forgotten I had even seen until I heard that line again.
I used to live with a dude who listened to Hairway to Steven or locust abortion technician and played PS1 like 18 hours a day sometimes Good dude. Heard he's got a kid now. I'm sure that kid ended up dope as hell 😂 lil weird but 👍
How about the various Darkstalkers commercials? Several of them were collected as extra features on Discotek's blu-ray release of the Darkstalkers OVA.
I’d pre ordered the deluxe edition of Street Fighter X Tekken on the PS3, and part of me wishes I could go back and play it now that I’ve gotten better with fighting games.
Those King of Fighters/Art of Fighting commercials were good, but I wish the Geese actor had a wig that made him resemble his character beyond just the robes.
"Oh look, it's a RAUL-BIX CUBE!" "RAUL, YOU COME RIGHT BACK HERE AND BE IN THIS BAD MOVIE!" "But I've signed to play Archbishop Romero!" "Fingal, are you single? Gimme a jingle." "The place." "...formerly known as The Locale." My favorite episode of MST3K if only for all the PBS jokes. Well, and the 80s doctor who sci-fi sfx 😂
06:06 Waaaay back in the day, I was briefly into shoplifting. My biggest scores were a Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition strategy guide (different from this one) and a Final Fantasy III (Japanese 6) strategy guide. Good times.

19:14 I'm sorry, skullman, but THAT does not even qualify for nightmare fuel at all. That actually looks sort of kinda okay-ish, as far as using CG characters on a live action TV ad goes. There's a lot worse that this.
That Street Fighter 2 ad with the dig on MK was a US ad. Also, I recreated it some years ago but it was for Smash on Wii U and the victim was Playstation All Stars on PS3. Also, check out the ads for Super Smash Bros 64 and Mortal Kombat 2011.
Full disclosure: I convinced my parents to get the SF2 Tiger Electronics game for me because of that commercial, and I pretended that I liked it out of fear that they wouldn't buy me anything else I asked for (because they had already gotten my the Batman one, and knew I didn't like it).
The 90s and early 2000s were the best time for gaming it was before bullshit micro purchases and you could actually finish a game by just buying the game
Super Smash Bros commercials, next time. There were more live action Street Fighter II commercials that were amazing. One of them has Chun Li rushing down M.Bison in her stage and it ends with a kikoken.
If you're not old enough to remember the 90s then you completely missed out on the most nostalgic gaming era that will ever be awesome games no micro purchases

As a middle aged man that loves video games and also routinely watches commercial compilations on RUclips, these videos are catnip to me Matt!
Fun fact: The red coat lady in the Art of Fighting commercial was played by famous singer Hamasaki Ayumi. And she might be supposed to represent Yuri in that ad, considering she also voiced Yuri in the AOF OVA.
Love me some Evolution by Hamasaki. This is a tasty piece of info!

I had to look up what Akira from Virtua Fighter said. He said "You're ten years too early." this is his catchphrase .
The MK2 live action commercial with Shao Kahn, Kitana, Reptile, Baraka and Sub Zero rocks
9:38 that was the bonus round "Rite Of Physical Fortification". Succesfully finishing it extended your life bar. There were two other bonus rounds that extended your spirit bar and gave you access to your Super Move.
1st things first; The 90s were a wild wild time.
2nd: Think my favorites out of all the ones has to be the Fatal Fury Special commercials.
If I remember correctly, Tatsunoko was able to get the rights to all of their IPs back a few years ago, for their 55th Anniversary. Theoretically speaking, Capcom could re-release TvC if they wanted to, Hakushon Daimou and all!
23:53 Okay maybe I’m wrong but the actress in the Samurai Spirits commercial might be Reiko Chiba, the Ptera Ranger (Pink Ranger) from Zyuranger???
Yo, live action Jubei and Nakoruru looked perfect. 10/10 no notes.
I wish there was a Tobal commercial, since it would be a chance to see Toriyama's glorious chicken man in a promo.

I also bought Tatsunako vs Capcom AND got the fighting sticks :)
I've said it before, I'll say it again: my fav era of video game commercials is PS1. They're strange, hilarious and 90s as hell. I never get sick of them.

Those AoF spots are the distillment of all the various action shows that were in first-run syndication in the 90s.
"Oh my God, Road Rash!"
I loved that game back in the day. Kinda surprised it hasn't gotten a current era reboot; with the closest thing being a mobile game 15 years ago.
Ain't that EA? If so, I highly doubt they'd be willing to bring back the IP. And even if they did, they'd probably ruin it.
Not Road Rash but a game called Road Redemption is probably the closest to it, released a few years back, pretty fun.

Sounds more to me like they were saying "You couldn't wait for the Ultra 64, so THERE! Happy now?!"
Highly recommend the live action advert for MK Mythologies. The KOF: MI series was one of my favourites.
TMNT tournament fighter was supposed to be in the style of a televangelist preaching the TMNT gospel.
This was a great video. Tons of fun.

Sony had a rather freaky marketing campaign with the PS3. I recall that one particular nightmare-inducing baby doll ad.
Just ignoring the David Lynch ps2

Unless it's got Terry Bogard smacking asses on a motorcycle, is the ad really worth watching? Idk, probably.
I love how in the 90s, whenever kids played physical toy games like that Street Fighter one or Crossfire, the loser fucking dies.
