Let Arkane give it a spin. It'd be a great way to visit places like Black Marsh so you don't have to retcon it in a main game to allow humans and elves into the region.
Hell at this point I would pay 80 bucks for this reworked for xbox 360 haha. I would have loved to experience this game and with tech nowadays, why can't we? Remake it at least. Elder scrolls travels games should be crafted with care obviously but it would be awesome to have these travels games in between huge titles that take more than a decade to get out.
Redguard's financial failure might be partially due to the fact that it came out literally three weeks before Ocarina of Time, since it's trying to do a lot of the same things that game was doing (probably without even realizing it). Just... way, way worse.
When I was a kid, I think this would have been mid to late 00s, I was a HUGE fan of Morrowind. I basic memorized that entire game. Every item location, every quest, every NPC, every bug, every feature, and every bug that should have been a feature. Main game and both major expansions. To this day I probably have more time in Morrowind than I have in every other game combined. I played Oblivion when it came out and it was fun for a bit, but I found it too restrictive after growing up on Morrowind and to this day its still my least favorite numbered TES game by a wide margin. As insane as it sounds I finally hit a point where i had basically done everything I could think to do in Morrowind. So imagine my excitement when I talked to this random kid I didn't even know one day and he just gives me a double disk jewel case with a CD ROM in it for Daggerfall and another for Redguard. I spent HOURS learning how to use a DOS box so I could play these games. I think I was in 10th grade so 2009-2010. We obviously had internet but it wasn't so easy to find people who knew about obscure, outdated things like DOS. Finally I got it working and boy my disappointment with Redguard AT FIRST. I wanted more Morrowind and Redguard definitely ain't that. I eventually tossed it aside and moved on to Daggerfall. Then by that summer I started getting popular with girls and I stopped playing games for a long time. When I got out of the army and came home in 2016 I had no real possessions, no friends in town, no job, nothing to do. So I started pulling out all my old belongings and playing around with them and at some point I found this dumb game I tossed aside years earlier. Keep in mind at this point Skyrim has been out for years, and here I am playing Redguard. Damned if I didn't fall in love with that game. Maybe it was just a good time in my life. Maybe it's the antique charm but something about this game, its world and characters and story are just really endearing.
I LOVE long-form Elder Scrolls analysis videos! I don't understand why people keep analysis videos so short, I think the Patrician's video analysis lenght is like the bare minimum just to be able to say anything worth saying, or make any analysis about each topic regarding the game. I really liked your video. Time flew by, I felt like the video was way shorter than it was because it was so enjoyable and well narrated. Hope to see more from you!!

iirc the Dwarven Colossus has a weakpoint on an ankle Talos style (the Jason and the Argonaut Colossus, not the guy from Skyrim). Still means you're just whacking it till it dies, but there's a method to the madness. As much as I hate the dwarven volcano puzzle, the observatory and finding the flask of lilandril felt much worse. The former was bad even with a guide but at least the constellations were cool, and the latter broke me and made me use a guide in the first place. I think this could had been failry successful if they simply used first person and copypasted daggerfall items and mechanics into this game. It would had been playable and more interesting to have an actual rpg with character building instead of this clunky mess with boring/horrible combat. 2:54:51 I can shed some light on this. Well... sort of. You are correct in saying that MIDI tracks use various audio samples stored elsewhere for each instrument. However, most DOS and early Windows games use something known as a "General MIDI Format Soundfont". See, MIDI songs can't ask for a specific instrument, it can't just say "gimme a piano sound". A note can only ask for an instrument under a certain index number, like- "gimme instrument 1." And since various pieces of sound hardware at the time would have came bundled with their own sets of instrument samples (soundfonts), a standard was set among them so that musicians and software developers can reliably ask for whatever "instrument 1" is on the user's machine and expect it to be a piano. This means the software doesn't have to package their own soundfont with the game, they can just use the default one on the machine. (Although MOD Tracker music is sort of like if you made a midi file with its own special soundfont glued to it) On that note, that makes Redguard's lack of music all the more baffling, since they don't have to package audio samples with the game files. MIDIs are functionally just a set of instructions, they don't take up that much space. So I have no idea why it's like this. The only explanation I can think of was that the composers weren't given much time to work on the game.
@@MBM1117727 Okay, I did go back and take a closer listen to the soundtrack. Assuming that what's been uploaded to youtube is authentic to how it plays in the game, then I'm definitely hearing that more naturalistic reverb that you can't get out of a regular MIDI track. That being said, while I'm not good enough at identifying audio samples to definitively say if this was originally composed as General MIDI tracks and then converted to MP3/WAV afterwards... I can say that they didn't make very good use of the CD audio and they really, really should have just stuck with MIDI.
Battlespire was honestly Bethesda's first official DLC mod for Daggerfall because it was meant to be the next part in the Daggerfall storyline from what I heard.
here from looking in the Twitter likes of mickyD. listened to the whole thing while working the night shift. the speech Cyrus gives is great. makes me wish there was a fan project to remaster/modernize some of the awful aspects of this games because there's alot of cool things here and there. thanks for the vid
I have just seen the first 30 minutes of your retrospective and you are by far my best discovery for the month of June 😍It is just admirable that you created a 3 and a half hours of video spectacle about this (not so) obscure game from the Elder Scrolls universe 👏👏I can't wait for your next long form analysis 😁
Man, the positivity in this comment section is really great. Your video is also really really great, thank you for playing through the game and making a video! I'm really glad RUclips recommended this channel to me, I really enjoyed what I've seen and listened to so far. It's very very good and I hope you have other long videos planned for the future (as long as that's the kind of content you want to put out) Great video! Very awesome, will fall asleep to this 100%
This is a good video, absolutely loved the pacing, audio work, timing eith jokes. You could definitely make a seris out of looking st these more forgotten games that other channels tend to neglect
Interesting work! I am going to watch this in the following days. Personally I think these early / not often played TES games are much more interestintg to make RUclips videos about. There are hundreds videos about TES: III-V that are often way to long or unoriginal. Everyone played Sykrim and knows how to think about it. We do not need an other hours long video saying the stuff everyone knows since 2012, so this is a far better subject! Here are some notes: 3:00 Todd Howard also was a designer on Daggerfall. 8:00 The crowns are more sympathetic to the Empire but they are not totally fine with Tiber Septim conquering them. Only after they start losing the civil war they call him for help and they do not even want him to stay. They do it to win against the crown but the reason for the conflict was not them wanting Tiber to conquer them. 10:00 Souls only go to the soul cairn when they are given to the ideal masters. Not all people who get soul trapped end there. 14:00 You should have mentioned the 1. Pocket Guide to the Empire which was written by Kirkbride, Ken Rolston, Kurt Kuhlmann and Richard Guy for the manuel of Redguard. It greately expands the lore of the series and gives a ton of new information on the cultures of Tamriel. It probably one of the most important aspects of the game, besides being the first non-RNG world Bethesda ever did.
Such a great video analysis I hope you return your content is great man, I usually don’t like long form essays but I didn’t even notice really, you deserve more views 👍🏻
Nice callback/surprise during The Sword Prince Speech --- It really validates the arguments about the VA-ing being better than its reputation suggests Kwezco made in the VA segment. It took a lot of restraint to leave the best example as a surprise then let it play thru as a scene, to keep the coherence + momentum of the storyline as a backbone. Good organization of material pays off. That was gobsmacking, such a good scene. RIP Joto. That was one of the best representations of the cat folk I've ever seen. EDIT: I think a better soundtrack, if someone nails it in a fan game, would make a huge impact in the game experience --- maybe going in a Tangerine Dream eerie ambient direction that's less obvious than the generic Hero Tunes already present or a desert-level-track-ifying would heighten the mystery + majesty they're trying to project & add more strangeness to the setting, making that "backrooms" vibe Kewzco mentioned an feature rather than drawback of the game.
Oh man, so glad I stumbled on your page, fantastic work! I remember getting hyped reading the review in PC Gamer, it think it might've been the same one that had Half-Life? As a kid who grew up on Treasure Island, Monkey Island, Sid Meyer's Pirates! and so much pirate media I thought this was going to be THE game for me. Got it, read the comic book and the little booklet religiously, couldn't get it to not crash on my dad's (at the time) state of the art pc. kept trying on and off for a few years whenever I got a pc or upgraded mine and still could not get it to work. Bought it on GOG and it's still...sadly what it's always been. Thank you so much for this retrospective because although I was in love with the idea of the game, I don't think I could ever make myself play through all that sludge.
Awesome video man; I also appreciated the quick Sam Hyde appearance at the start lol. I do retrospectives on my own channel too and I fully appreciate the amount of work that goes into making them, and doing a 3 hour and 22 minute one is crazy! Bravo m8
Skyrim actually flat out confirms gun powder is canon with the use of cannons being on the ships you can boars. Cannons being canon sorta implies smaller firearms could be.

just finished playing redguard for the first time and thought i'd search it up on youtube, was surprised someone put the time and effort into a more thorough look at the game than just showing that it's a 90's janky departure from the series. really enjoying! thanks for making it :)
I absolutely love this game for some reason. I never played it back in the day, only played the GOG release. Found it rather enjoyable. Glad to see this good retrospective on it! Came here after the Battlespire one (equally a great watch); keep up the great work!
Well this was lovely, Jwlar send me here and after my second watch through I fell compelled to congratulate you on your effort, this has earned its place in my personal Long-form TES playlist alongside Jwlar's Arena and Daggerfall aswell as Patrician's Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Now the only task left is for someone to do one on Battlespire (and I guess that one obscure obscure handheld one)
1:55:04 And I mean the brits held on to colonies that lost money year after year after year until they actually suffered major losses closer to home in the world wars.
Honestly based off the writings featuring Cyrus by MK the characterization of him in the game IS his personality, he really does just kind of adventure around based on his whims and once he decides to commit to a goal he will fight to the death for it, or cheat if necessary 😉
I feel like the writing (thank you Kirkbride) and a lot of the intent of what they were going for isn't actually a bad idea at all. If Bethesda made a short and sweet remake or remaster with actual functionality, I'd think it'd be golden. The hints and lore of Cyrus have always had me interested, and I know they wanted his Second Game to be in Black Marsh. I actually do like the concept of smaller more linear stories separate from the main games in time era, but the same world. Here is to hoping Bethesda embraces Cyrus and the concept again. Sail on my Cyrus, sail on.
This has become my autism support video, ive watched the whole thing like 5 times over a week, i just dont get bored of it, i cant expĺain it The fact it has so few views is a crime, i hope it diesnt discourage you, id love to see more like this. Its probably my favourite video on youtube
As a long time fan of this silly ahh game I loved every single minute of this video + damn you calling my homie Dram a femboy got me pausing the vid just to stare at the wall in disbelief bc I never saw it in him until you said it
I actually wish the next Elder Scrolls would be in Hannerfell: a desert climate with some tropical instead of the frozen north we've been enjoying since 2011
With all the advances adventure games have had over the last 20 years, I always thought an Uncharted-like adventure spinoff in the TES world would be awesome. In this era of remakes, I’m a little surprised no one wants to rebuild this game from the ground up. I mean it worked for Tomb Raider, which this game was heavily ripping off… someone should really get on that
I think the lack of fondly remembered Elder Scrolls Spinoffs is mostly owed to the Spinoffs being... yknow. Kinda ass. At current, I'm pretty sure the people would eat up a decent little spinoff that is well put together and stays faithful to the Elder Scrolls Lore.
I was so pissed playing this. I remember three skeletons jumped into a rowboat when I was stuck in dialogue with the ferryman. I had to watch them kick my ass while I was stuck in a rambling diatribe about a man, who knew a man, who knew a man.
Legendary effort. Good stuff dude!
Thanks, homes.
Multi-hour videos on ancient TES games is just what I needed to listen to in the background. Because I can't be bothered playing the actual thing 😅
This one esp, there is hardly anything on this TES.
I jus got away from 2hrs of sitting in front of my pc with skyrim open on the main menu, not playing anything 🤦♂️

I wish they still made spin off games like this. A small scale linear action game set in a region of Tamriel could be cool.
Maybe a game about the adventures of Maiq? I really wish we got more smaller adventure games like this.
Would be nice if they did this between the major releases, I'd definitely prefer an ES Adventure game to ESO lol

That being said, while I'm not good enough at identifying audio samples to definitively say if this was originally composed as General MIDI tracks and then converted to MP3/WAV afterwards... I can say that they didn't make very good use of the CD audio and they really, really should have just stuck with MIDI.
@@HQ_Default That soundtrack is indeed how it sounds ingame.
Thank you for playing this narratively interesting but mechanically terrible game so that nobody else has to.
that was the plan
I don't know what to make of most of the stuff on your channel, but this was pretty neat. I hope you make more like this.
I briefly mention the Redguard Unity project. I've linked their twooter in the description.
Thank you for this retrospective! I was always hoping somebody would make one. And great job, btw.
If you want to expand your channel, I'd recommend more content like this, good shit 👍
Man, the positivity in this comment section is really great. Your video is also really really great, thank you for playing through the game and making a video! I'm really glad RUclips recommended this channel to me, I really enjoyed what I've seen and listened to so far. It's very very good and I hope you have other long videos planned for the future (as long as that's the kind of content you want to put out)
Great video!
Here are some notes:
3:00 Todd Howard also was a designer on Daggerfall.
Probably the most comprehensive coverage of a game I’ve seen. Nice
Such a great video analysis I hope you return your content is great man, I usually don’t like long form essays but I didn’t even notice really, you deserve more views 👍🏻
I'm here because I searched Jwlar and for some raisin your video showed up. Your channel is a gem.
No one has covered this game
I'm so glad somebody covered this game in depth! Growing up our family computer had so many issues running it that I had given up trying to finish it.
50 seconds into your intro.. you’re more sarcastic than me. I love it. Subbed already.
( god the work this must have taken! )
If jwlar recomends it. Its worth a watch. Your style is great.
Thank you so much for this retrospective because although I was in love with the idea of the game, I don't think I could ever make myself play through all that sludge.
ah, yes, the answer to the question of "what if the elder scrolls and old school runescape had a bastard child"
I will always have "The Redguard must not find his sister" imbedded in my brain.
This long form video is amazing and you have a very relaxing tone, I have been watching this for bedtime for the past few days and I don''t know what to do when I finish it.
Awesome video. Please make more Elder Scroll videos. I know lots of people have long videos on Elder Scroll games, but I think you have a unique style for these types of videos.
Finally a good length redguard retrospective. Thank you!
What is it with bethesda games and extremely interesting developments. Literally my niche little hobby is just knowledge dumping bethesda junk and people like you are so helpful
just finished playing redguard for the first time and thought i'd search it up on youtube, was surprised someone put the time and effort into a more thorough look at the game than just showing that it's a 90's janky departure from the series. really enjoying! thanks for making it :)
I love Cyrus. He can cause nuclear explosions with his sword.
Reread the story that’s from. He was lying.
I absolutely love this game for some reason. I never played it back in the day, only played the GOG release. Found it rather enjoyable. Glad to see this good retrospective on it! Came here after the Battlespire one (equally a great watch); keep up the great work!
45 seconds in and you've earned my subscription.
That yo-yo tho.
Maybe Vile has multiple voices mixed together & Todd is in the mix. Agreed on the brigand Todd.
Long form video game essays are my favorite type of content on RUclips
Well this was lovely, Jwlar send me here and after my second watch through I fell compelled to congratulate you on your effort, this has earned its place in my personal Long-form TES playlist alongside Jwlar's Arena and Daggerfall aswell as Patrician's Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. Now the only task left is for someone to do one on Battlespire (and I guess that one obscure obscure handheld one)
There actually is a very good 1-hour long commentary on Battlespire
ruclips.net/video/1eutg7IBpHo/видео.htmlsi=ta3dIExOnkb78l4U
excellent video. you should totally make one about other obscure bethesda games, like battlespire or fallout tactics
Battlespire's up next 😈
@@crendl sweet
Fallout tactics, the classic bethesda title.
@@TheHometodd i know it's black isle but it's still fallout, and the rights are owned by bethesda
I could never get Redguard to run back in the day. Looking forward to this
1:55:04 And I mean the brits held on to colonies that lost money year after year after year until they actually suffered major losses closer to home in the world wars.
Seriously good work, I look forward to whatever future projects you have
thank fucking god someone made a video longer than 20 mins about this game
i have been looking for this game for ages, i saw a video on it years ago an ive been on the hunt ever since
you are a blessing
I woke up to this video after falling asleep. I'm so very happy to have come across this video.
Honestly based off the writings featuring Cyrus by MK the characterization of him in the game IS his personality, he really does just kind of adventure around based on his whims and once he decides to commit to a goal he will fight to the death for it, or cheat if necessary 😉
I cannot say Nafaalilargus without sounding agressively scottish, so you did pretty good
Todd didn't lie, he conducted a special language operation
I feel like the writing (thank you Kirkbride) and a lot of the intent of what they were going for isn't actually a bad idea at all. If Bethesda made a short and sweet remake or remaster with actual functionality, I'd think it'd be golden. The hints and lore of Cyrus have always had me interested, and I know they wanted his Second Game to be in Black Marsh. I actually do like the concept of smaller more linear stories separate from the main games in time era, but the same world. Here is to hoping Bethesda embraces Cyrus and the concept again. Sail on my Cyrus, sail on.
this game is a piece of precious art, and i love it dearly for its flaws. its the epitome of early TES games.
You did a phenomenal job. Excellent work!
flash flash flaaaassshhhh is Morse code for "U". I feel like they could have been a bit more clever with this if they wanted.
This has become my autism support video, ive watched the whole thing like 5 times over a week, i just dont get bored of it, i cant expĺain it
The fact it has so few views is a crime, i hope it diesnt discourage you, id love to see more like this. Its probably my favourite video on youtube
Underrated channel. Hope you blow up dude!
The background music for the game show Clavicus section is familiar and on the tip of my tongue and it is driving me nuts. Please assist.
It's from paper Mario. Sorry to have driven your nuts.
Track is called "and the question is..."
@@crendlRUclips decided to not let me know you responded. Thank you.
As a long time fan of this silly ahh game I loved every single minute of this video + damn you calling my homie Dram a femboy got me pausing the vid just to stare at the wall in disbelief bc I never saw it in him until you said it
Man. yeah didn’t know this was a three plus hour subject. Thanks for doing it.
I love how at 0:41 half of the search results for the multi hours elder scrolls videos are of patricianTV 😅
Didn't expect to find the greatest video in all of RUclips today.
2:05:00 I think the implication is that the Khajiit has been turned into something by the Archmage before, and just remembers the spell
I actually wish the next Elder Scrolls would be in Hannerfell: a desert climate with some tropical instead of the frozen north we've been enjoying since 2011
This video was so good I’m re-watching it again. Right up there with jwlar top notch effort !
With all the advances adventure games have had over the last 20 years, I always thought an Uncharted-like adventure spinoff in the TES world would be awesome. In this era of remakes, I’m a little surprised no one wants to rebuild this game from the ground up. I mean it worked for Tomb Raider, which this game was heavily ripping off… someone should really get on that
The Turning Point Cyrodiil meme for Admiral Richton is unmatched 😂
To my ears, Clavicus Vile sounds like it might be Lord British's voice, or an imitation of it, but who knows! I love the voice acting in this game.
It took over three hours for me to realize that the one and only Dani Harrison was a RUclipsr. Mind blown. Hare Krishna
The opening hypothetical question is disrespectful. '98 had many amazing games that deserve long form videos. Idk if this is one of them though.
I never even learned about the block button or the fast travel
