Episode Notes:
1. It was infuriating at times trying to set up the controller for this. I never got the sensitivities right and it shows in the gameplay. I was actually rather decent at this game in the arcade, but here, I never finished above 4th place in any of the tracks. The default controller settings in Supermodel are absolutely unplayable.
2. Despite the quality of this one, subsequent Daytona releases were all based on the first game. Daytona 2's assets was never reused in anything except the Xbox port of Outrun 2.
3. I honestly believe that Sega dropped the Dreamcast port of this because they couldn't do a close enough approximation of it. The DC was powerful for its time, but the Model 3 Step 2.1 was simply out of its league.
4. I do prefer the first Daytona's music, but I still find this one curiously enjoyable. It has to be Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, however. That dude can make the silliest lyrics passable.
5. If you want to play this I recommend really reading up on Supermodel. You can get it running pretty nice, but the process can be quite a bit of work for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with it.
6. You may notice there is some hitching in the video, almost as if the emulator is struggling. This is a peculiar issue that isn't in my source capture. Between the original capture, the editing software, and RUclips's processing, this hitching showed up. I tried 3 different edits/uploads and they all did it. I have no clue why.
If there were to exist a collection with OutRun 1&2, Daytona 1&2, Sega Rally 1&2 and Scud Race on modern day consoles, I would be on that like a madman.
Sega touring car heck throw Le Mans 24 in there and that’ll be the perfect release.
Agreed, I'd buy that immediately
"SEGA racing classics collection"...
There's been talk of it ps5 and series x would run them great with the SSD and the power they have under the hood😊

Daytona 2 and Scud Race not getting ported anywhere is the biggest tragedy of Sega for me.
SAME! what a couple of terrible missed opportunities for Sega. Yet again, Sega and their fans fall victim to Sega's litany of terrible choices. :/
Both needed to be Dreamcast launch titles
yep. I say it all the time. WTF. I have memories in 96 of putting in a dollar into Sega Super GT (Scud Race) and being soo blown away.
The tragedy is people not knowing about emulators, how good they have become and playing the actual arcade games..not a port.
Warped Polygon has a channel on a super easy and quick set up guide for the Super Model 3 emulator.
He has done all the hours of hard work with controller configurations and what not as well as links to files you need. Except roms of course.
I am playing Daytona 2, Scud, Sega Rally 2 etc...increased to 2560 x 1600 with wide screen support on a handheld gaming PC.
Yes. Thank Hod for the Supermodel emulator. Although not perfect it’s great !!!
We need a Daytona USA collection for home consoles, that's for sure. Play this beautiful arcade on Nintendo Switch would be spectacular.
Sure but if it was Switch only it would be an epic fail.
I agree, the indoor dome had more personality and looked more impressive.
It really did. I understand Sega's appeal to NASCAR fans, but that redesign just sucked the life right out of that gorgeous track.
IMO, they should have kept the dome for the Beginner track, but added a standard NASCAR oval, Scud Race Super Beginner style. Same with the lazy NASCAR track in Daytona Championship the other year, strangely...
Didn't they finally get the license to use the actual Daytona International Speedway for the first track? The layout was always Daytona, I get why they would have done that. If you're into NASCAR it would be cool to see the speedway in the game
@@TK1s_Big_Love Lol just realised the lazy NASCAR track you're talking about in Championship IS Daytona International Speedway... After all these years they finally got the license to use it and now fans are complaining. That's so ironic 🤣🤣🤣
@@blakasmurf It's not Daytona International Speedway though, is it? Their layouts are different, that's my point. It's just a reskin of the Beginner Course (with a remixed, non-original music track) and NASCAR branding.
They could have done almost anything for the new courses and *they used exactly the same track layouts*. Lazy (from a design perspective at least).
Anybody who ever had the privilege of playing this in the arcade, specially on those moving seats machines with the force feedback steering wheel, know how unbelievably ahead of its time this game trully is. It's almost impossible to believe this game came out in 1998, it was absolutelly the best looking game of its time, and it would take some years for the visuals to actually be surpassed. This game is, simply put, amazing.
I did! It’s unforgettable! What an adrenaline rush it was always a teenager
Our arcade had 8 cabs next to each other, battle on the edge and later power edition.
Always used the phantom car did times marubaku would be jealous of.
The Graphics
The Music
The Gameplay
The Replayability
This game is literally arcade perfection.
I played this game so so much in the arcades and it still to this day remains the most impressive arcade game I've played in terms of wow factor. Amazing!
The fact it's not been officially released outside of the arcades is a crime to gaming. Great video.
The stages and presentation looks incredible, huge shame we never got that Dreamcast port.
They prefered to go with Daytona 2001 (which is a great game anyway...). A perfect Daytona 2 port would have been theoretically possible but practically Model 3 conversions were more complicated due to deep hardware differences. I think they created Naomi just to align arcade technology to the Dreamcast and cancel those problems (with big success).
@@charlie_oblu8351 Daytona 2001 was a great game once you adjusted to the handling. Gorgeous looking and sounded great. Highly recommended
It's a shame we never got ANY port. And only even got good emulation a few years ago. This one is begging for a remastered release. I'm still hopeful for a HD trilogy with Daytona 1 and SCUD Race some day
@@Noobsaibot21
The fact it's been over 20 years and we still haven't seen any sign of it one is terrible. Sega completely ignores it's arcade legacy it seems like.
@@Noobsaibot21 Sega can't make SCUD (or Sega Super GT depending on which region you're from) because all the sponsor logos and car manufacturer licenses have since expired. They can definitely make straight ports of Daytona 1 and 2, and 3 to PC and consoles.
Okay, the music in here is absolutely my jam, I love it. Both the St. James and Mitsuyoshi versions are fantastic.
Yeah I like Daytona 2 OST much more than the original.
I LOVE how the car vibrates and shakes... really amps up the sense of speed.
Yep 100% I can literally feel the arcade machine
I’ve been playing Daytona USA 2 in Like A Dragon Gaiden and came back to re-watch your video. So glad that there’s finally an official way to play it on consoles. :) I really miss the music from the first game and the beginner track in Power Edition doesn’t have the same charm, but the other tracks are great in terms of the visuals+layout and the handling and sense of speed are all right in the spirit of the original. Been waiting for this for years. :) Would love to see you do a video on the Sega arcade games in the Yakuza games.
Gentlemen, start your Saturns, Dreamcasts, or computers. Hell, start them all.
And your emulators mostly.
@@Chalkaspis
Sadly yes. (Not because emulators are horrible just because Sega should be doing this game justice not doing it dirty.) The fact Sega hasn't released this (as with so many of their games) in any other form at this point is ridiculous. It's a racing game based on Daytona how would that not sell immediately in US.
Don't forget your Xbox 360s!
Still waiting for that Daytona 2 port!
You and me both.
Same...
@@fcukugimmeausername Arcade perfect Sega Rally 1 is on PS2
@@fcukugimmeausername bundled with sega rally 2006 ntsc-J. Almost arcade perfect. Its even got 480P support. Just no link option unfortunetly so, you will still need an emulator if you want multiplayer in this game.
@Bobby Sharpe Source code? What for? Emulation is fine. If Nintendo can get away with emulating its 3D Mario collection, why can't Sega? I doubt anyone would care.
This, SCUD Race, and arcade perfect versions of Sega Rally '95 and Virtua Racing (for people without a Nintendo Switch) need to be in a collection for current gen and PC.
Graphically, still holds up today imo..
I remember when I first saw this back in 1998. It was the first game to have "" modern " 3d graphics
I love both, Dennis and Takenobu's tracks equally. They both sound so good!
Wow, not even Dreamcast Daytona looks as good as this (and that was one helluva great version too).
If you've told me this is on Steam, I'd have believed you without any doubts.
@@fcukugimmeausername You had to reduce the sensitivity to very low to get better controls but still, indeed, the controls were very unappealing.
The controls are perfect if your using the racing wheel
It was not made by AM2 so we can forgive them.
It was a very difficult game too
I remember being in high school and winning a 30 player Daytona 2 knockout tournament. Won a Dreamcast, Daytona T-Shirt, mug, cap and other goodies. Was a good time.
I really REALLY wish that SEGA could create some type of Current-Gen or better yet Next-Gen compilation for all of the arcade releases of Daytona USA. It does NOT deserve to be just another nostalgic footnote amongst SEGA's back catalog of classic franchises that are in all honesty unfortunately neglected more and more as time has subsequently continued to pass.
DAYTONAAA FOREVER!!!
Omg this music is so nostalgic. It was either at the ice rink, Keglers bowling or star base alpha. This reminds me of middle school birthday parties
I saw one at the Cortlanes bowling alley.
A full 10 - 16 multiplayer race with the music blasting out sounded so incredible it makes you go insane with happiness! My gosh, I have so much glorious memories of this game!!
It's finally (mostly) coming to consoles!
Jesus THAT soundtrack!
Always made me lose the plot when I hear that soundtrack. It's FIRE!!
Damn, you're right it still looks great in 2020
These games need to be released on Steam.
I strongly, strongly recommend seeing 'Warped Polygon's' channel if you want to get playing these games quickly NOW!
He has made a SUPER easy 'Super Model 3 emulator set up guide' - and you'll (I have anyway) be playing Daytona 2, Sega Rally 2, Scud Racer, Ski Champ, Star Wars trilogy and all their versions etc..in no time.
He's gone through the hard work of making the controller configuration files and links to the necessary emulator and support files. (except roms and the gui) as well as guides on setting light guns, controller tips etc...
Also
If you are just getting into emulation or just want to play these sega arcade games, invest a little time in setting a front end like 'Playnite' as it can present all the arcade games and make them easier to launch at a click of a button.
These games don't need to stay retro in the past, when you can live them right now!
Btw, I agree with Sega X Lord.
Daytona USA 2 BE's first track is more interesting visually, but PE has a little more features.
Kind of wish why didn't just Sega combine both together instead.
Definitely would like these Model 2 & 3 games to come home! Come on SEGA give us something worthwhile from your back catalog!
It was so impressive how Sega really put efforts in the music of its games!
Would love to get the original Daytona and this one along with a Virtua Fighter collection on Switch and the other systems. Virtua Racing was a joy to play again via Sega Ages, especially upscaled like it was.
Sega should honestly just release a 4 volume arcade pack. vol1 super scalers, vol2 Model 1 and Titan arcade games, vol3 Model 2 games, and finally volume 4 Model 3 and Naomi games.
I love the Mega drive, but those games have had compilation for every new generation.
This ☝🏼💯
They should've released some sort of SEGA arcade history series, kinda like AGES, but with packs. Not just 4, but instead encompassing the entire arcade games SEGA had released to at least the Lindbergh era or RingEdge era.
Imagine having access to games from the electromechanical era like Periscope, to TTL machines Monaco GP and Fonz, to early microprocessor games like Flicky and Action Fighter, to early scaler games like SubRoc 3D, Turbo, and Zoom 909, to System series and Super Scaler games (System 16 to System H1), then onto the Model series and ST-V games, Naomi 1, 2, Hikaru, and finally the Lindbergh and RingEdge 1 and 2 games. Add some extras too like the Laserdisc games.
Give a free version which has 1 games from each series as a demo, then sell each pack as DLC for like 10 bucks a pack. Easy money for SEGA.
Do this for their best console games, and then wonder why SEGA has monetary issues for the past 20 years or so.
This, but replace Vol 1 super scalers (there are many ways to play most System x/y/z games) with System 32 (Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, Rad Mobile, Title Fight, etc) and I'm in.
@@cbarger2327 Why replace if both can be added? Add the seldom mentioned System H1 too.
@@ZX3000GT1 True, true. Might as well throw in Model 1 as well!
Wow, never got to play this. Hunter mode. Great review Sega Lord X!
Great summary of the game, and I agree, it's a masterpiece and a damn shame that Daytona 2 never made it home. I'd add that the arcade experience sitting in that custom hydraulic car frame was the pinnacle of immersion - that made a great game unforgettable. I played it often over the years at a local theater until they eventually got rid of it a few years ago, I sure miss it, Daytona 2 was unreal.
My 2nd favorite Model 3 game of all time. Still will sit and pop quarters in a cabinet of this, no matter which version -- BOTE or PE. Listening to the opening attract theme, especially the Dennis version, never gets old to me.
I happen to own a Battle on the Edge ROM board for my Model 3 Step 2 stack, but I can assure you AM2 really developed this game like a tank; if the CPU board in your Model 3 has corrosion on it, the game most likely won't boot and gives you a "Backup RAM" error. It is so common on this game where it won't boot but other ROM boards on the platform will, plus it uses its own security board.
Sega lord x! Daytona usa 2 is coming to us as sega racing classic 2 as hidden arcade game in like a dragon man who erased his name!
But blue flame screen indicates it might be “power edition” only. Please write sega to ask for the bote indoor forest dome oval track!!
Yup - it’s the Power Edition only. Perhaps we can get BOTE in a future game. The indoor forest dome is a lot more visually interesting than the oval in Power Edition so I’d like that. But it’s still nice that we finally have a console port of Daytona USA 2 after all this time - I’ve been playing it a lot. :)
As far as I know, neither of the two versions of Daytona USA 2 nor SCUD Race came to Colombia. And I might be wrong about it, but I never saw any of them on the local arcades I usually went to play. This also pisses me off quite a lot because the first Daytona USA is my all-time favorite arcade and I really really want Sega to bring their best arcade games to modern consoles and PC. Sega, if you're reading all these comments, please do yourselves and your long-time fans a favor and bring your awesome arcade games to modern platforms. Have a good one everyone!
I just watched a Digital Foundry video talking that this game will finally be ported to home consoles!
Been playing it on my Xbox Series X. If you skip the cutscenes in Like A Dragon Gaiden, you can get to the arcade to play it in less than an hour. It’s a good a time. :) The intermediate, expert and mixed tracks are a lot of fun and the graphics are good, too. It’s a shame that the beginner track isn’t as visually interesting as its counterpart in the original and that the music isn’t on the same level, but it’s still thrilling to finally be playing it after so long. :)
A perfect emulator can be developed for the model 3, also an 1 to 1 port. But the experience of seating in that awesome cabinet, the force feedback and the sound (it's a BLAST!), yeah...give me the arcade cabinet xD
I'd kill for a Daytona collection.
I love to see a Daytona Collection or an Arcade1up with Scud Race
Count me in that too.
That dome and the city look incredible with a huge sense of scale, thanks to that draw distance. Crazy that this was from 1998.
One of the best arcade racers of all time, with a soundtrack to match. This game is an unmitigated legend.
Dennis St James fucking ROCKS this sound track and wipes the floor with the Japanese original. I get the original Daytona soundtrack was iconic but for the sequel it just doesn’t cut it. Dennis makes it work and makes me pumped to race!
Dude, this game looks awesome! Can't believe I missed it. Gonna play it today.
They did a hell of a job with virtua racing on the switch capturing all that sega arcade goodness. Now I am just hoping they will release Daytona :)
I spent so many quarters in the arcades playing Daytona some of my best childhood memories.
Give Scud Race a try! Also on the model 3.
Scud Race is amazing! I played it so much back in the days at my local arcade.
@@peachflavored Same. I grew up with that game. Favorite Sega racer on all time.
Known in the USA as Sega Super GT. Another game that did not receive a home port...
Yeah, awsome Scud Race ... But be aware, SEGA don't have any licence any more ... Sega ages blocked to sega own titles saddly
I LOVED this game to death. Any time I saw it in public or in an arcade, I'd go straight to it.
I'm so sad it's never been ported. Thank goodness for emulators.
Here here, bro!! I FEEL YA.
Totally agree with you SLX. The first track is MUCH better in the "dome version" with waterfalls and all. The Nascar style track looks so boring, and completely lost the wow-effect of the original.
DAYTONAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!
LET'S GO AWAY
(Let's go away...)
*DAYTONAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!*
ROLLING STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRT!!!
The challenge track in DAYTONA USA 2 PE is also known as Outrun Track
I dunno why but I appreciate these graphics more then new racing games it leaves more to your imagination and still looks good
Loving the content, surely somebody at Sega realises the value of all of these games left on Arcade or Saturn
Speaking of Saturn, I now have my Terraonion Mode installed and have a lot of games to catch up on being from the UK, starting with Astal
I think they should be working for Dreamcast version about this. Maybe some convert model like the Atomiswave Port, it will fun.
Daaaaaaytona! You didn’t even have to see the cabinet to know the arcade you were at had one of the original cabinets. Kids today won’t respect the beauty that it is. It doesn’t hold up against the Gran Turismo and Forza 7s of today. However, I’ll personally never forget seeing this in the arcades. It looked so real back then. Polygon graphics were the wave of the future and the speed at which this game ran was amazing. The original Daytona USA had many ports, but none of them lived up to what the arcade looked and felt like. And yes… it’s about time Sega rebooted this series. I’d love to see this redone with 20+ tracks and the ability to unlock new vehicles. Yes… not a new concept for racing games today… but having this in the Daytona franchise would be amazing.
I prefer this game over the first. I spent an entire day playing this at my local mini golf place near my house. Great review and great game.
Would love to see a Dayton Deluxe pack for current gen system that had the 3 tracks from the first game, the 2 Dreamcast exclusive tracks and finally the 3 tracks from Daytona 2!
This game is simply magnificent. A hall of fame quality arcade racer deserving to be lavished on current consoles.
I remember the first time I played this game was at my local arcade(sadly it's no longer here) and I loved it. It's amazing how the graphics still hold up. Sega was ahead of it's time with some of there games. This game along with sega super gt and marvel vs capcom were the only games I played the most at that arcade. Awesome video as always!!!
Putting SEGA's ass to the Fire, I love it. Couldn't agree more, They need to start dipping into their legendary 3D arcade titles already and first party Saturn fare on a new Sega Ages compilation or they're going to be relegated to the dustbin of history just like Atari.
Man, sucks I can only hit the thumbs once. Great vid. Love the content you cover, and you make it even better with your dope and on point narration. Don't change a thing. You absolutely kill it in my opinion. Thank you SLX!!
This game is perfect, I still playing it at my local arcade after 20 years!
Arcade1Up needs to make a arcade cabinet that includes a collection of all of the classic SEGA racing games including Daytona USA 2.
Could you imagine a Sega Ages Racer pack with this the original Daytona, the Sega Rally games and virtua racing🤤
It’s such a waste that Sega doesn’t bring more of their arcade games home. I love Virtua Racing on Switch, and Model 2 games on PS3.
Also I prefer the American singer. Has a great 80s metal vibe. Like it would fit in Bloodsport.
So glad you covered this game. The closest we got to getting this at home was the small section of track they put in Outrun 2.
I still honestly feel like the arcade genre is still something super unrepresented and honestly still just as important as the classic home Console games, thank you so much for keeping them alive
Sega has enough amazing arcade games to make an entire collection just for racing games and fighting games alone. I'd buy the shit out of a collection consisting of Virtua Racing, Daytona 1-2, Sega Rally 1-2, Indy 500, Scud Racer etc..... Boggles the mind how they can let such historic games just die off, when any of these games can still hold up amazingly well even by today's standards. A "model 1, 2, or 3 arcade mini" would have me pushing my Xbox series X or PS5 off to the side.
I really hope that Sega brings Daytona USA 2 to Xbox one and from what I heard the modern consoles can be able to run super model 3 hardware!!!
God this game still looks gorgeous. Its criminal that it hasn't been brought home yet
I’m biased because I wrote Supermodel but I find that controllers are very playable. I use an Xbox 360 pad with the default settings. The analog stick is *very* sensitive because the entire steering wheel range is mapped onto it but after a few rounds of practice, I learn to relax and use a light touch. I’ve been able to take first place on each course.
Some of the more serious fans use a Logitech wheel, which can emulate the force feedback.
A re-release of Daytona 2 seems unlikely but who knows. Sega reached out to me when Supermodel was first released in 2011 to explore Model 3 ports for XBox 360 but it sadly went nowhere.
Appreciate the comment. I used a PS4 controller. Do you find the 360 pad better?
@@SegaLordX Haven’t tried a PS controller so I’d hate to mislead. I would be surprised if they are much different. I play with a wired controller (not sure whether Bluetooth latency might be perceptible). To be clear, it is touchy, but far less so than Scud Race, which requires becoming one with the joystick and transcending to a higher form of existence.
Make sure that you only have the analog wheel input mapped to the stick and not the digital steer left/right inputs. The documentation explains why analog inputs have these digital variants but I think it confuses a lot of people. Digital controls are unplayable and are little more than debugging fallbacks for keyboards.
I should probably make a video of myself playing with a simultaneous view of my hands on the controller.
@SEGAMODELBOY15 Yes, it was shortly after the release of 0.1a and it was someone from Sega of Europe who left the company not long thereafter. I don't have any contacts there but if I really wanted to, I know someone who has done emulation and porting projects for them who could probably put me in touch. But it's not going to happen and here's why:
- Licensing costs: games that use licensed vehicles have to renew those licenses periodically, which is why many games with real world vehicles get pulled from app stores periodically when their licenses expire and developers opt not to renew them. And now with titles like Forza earning serious money, there's no way Sega could spring for all the licenses to bring back something like Scud Race. It would be prohibitively expensive. If you change all the cars would it even be the same game anymore? Likewise for Daytona (although the Daytona International Speedway license is probably not as expensive as e.g. a Ferrari license). Would you play Baytona USA? Maybe, but even then, that's suspiciously close to Daytona.
- The games are too short and lack content relative to what gamers expect today. I don't think Daytona USA 2 would hold up for newcomers to the series who have grown up on modern racers. This could be somewhat rectified by adding a track editor or something but once you start adding UGC, you'd have to effectively rebuild the game to support a more modern look and all of a sudden you're really developing Daytona 4, not porting Daytona 2. In fact, when I got the call from Sega, they were curious about opportunities for customizability but we didn't carry the conversation on long enough to elaborate.
- They implied that they have Model 3 SDKs still and source code (not sure if that's really true) and if so, I would never be able to touch Model 3 emulation. So is it worth some crummy port with the name potentially changed to e.g., Sega Racing Classic 2?
- Not enough money. I don't think these things would sell enough to justify the opportunity cost. I could make more working on cutting edge stuff and these days I'm working on a startup that I think is really exciting. It's a massive opportunity cost to plow time into old games that can be played for free today.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to bring back retro games in a big way, especially in VR/AR. But the licensing issues are a nightmare. It's really more of a business and financial problem than a technical one, sadly. That's why emulation is so important: it's the best way to preserve these titles.
@@superbroly64DS I think that Daytona 2 could be released as Sega Racing Classic 2. But right now I’m not available to work on that anyway.
@@trzy is it difficult to consolize a Sega model 3 board of Daytona USA 2 or any other Sega model 3 game?
A masterpice! One of my favorite racing games. I used to play this game with my friends. 🎮✌👍
great content as always, SEGA has an amazing back catalogue of games that never got released in home versions. Making mini versions of systems is a way they can milk the cash cow, but i'd prefer a proper release for already existing systems.
Should also mention that Reb Beach, guitarist of Winger and current Whitesnake guitarist, did the guitar parts for the song "I Can Do It", which was featured in the Theme Park course.
All of us Sega diehards have been begging for a Sega Super GT/Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 home port for over a decade!
Like you say, next time Sega get a wild Sega Ages hair up their asses, we need these two games.
I'd take a game with just both versions of Jet Set Radio, Daytona USA 2, and SCUD Race.
Thank you Sega Lord X for another great video. I agree about you saying that Sega should bring back Sega Ages series for Nintendo Switch but this time, games like Daytona USA & this sequel, Virtua Fighter 1, 2, 3, & 4, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop and maybe House of the Dead and release them to other modern consoles. And yeah if Sega is listening by releasing those games to home consoles especially Nintendo Switch by way of Sega Ages series, we would be very happy & Sega would make good money out of them.
I know this video is three years old, but I just wanted to say. People can now play this game through built-in emulation on the game "Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name."
You can visit one of the arcades in the city map and pay 100¥ in game. They called it "Sega Racing Classic 2" I suppose due to licensing.
Mitsuyoshi version all the way.
I love you for making this video for giving some new life to DUSA2
So many memories
Love this game
I love your videos so much!! Please never stop making them, keep up the good work my friend.
The biggest single issue with Daytona USA 2, was that it never made it across to the Dreamcast.
Don't know why, but i love this unique car shaking!
I bet the #1 reason why there has never been a home port of this game is the amount of money that NASCAR or the Daytona race track want in royalties or an up-front payment to allow a release. Money that Sega does NOT want to pay. Also, the game itself was incredible in many ways, but the arcade business was in such steep decline by the late 90's that Daytona USA 2 made only a fraction of the amount of money for Sega and arcade owners that the original did.
I can still remember playing the original Daytona USA at a local arcade that had an 8 machine networked setup. It was absolutely awesome to play with/against 7 other people at the same time! Even at $1 a pop in 1993/94 dollars my friends and I would easily spend $50-100+ each time we went to play as a group. That same arcade closed entirely in 97 or 98. By then most people were happy to play their PS1, N64 or PC games at home instead. Many of my friends and I had started doing LAN parties around 1996 and did so for many years after that.
It’s a shame M2 no longer does Sega Ages ports. I would’ve loved this and other great arcade game to make playable on current consoles much like Virtua Racing on Switch and Daytona USA on XBL.
I really hope Arcade 1up does a Daytona, Scud Race, Sega Rally unit.
I’m thankful to have one of the deluxe cabs for this game at my local bowling alley. Definitely a ton of fun, but I’ve never been the best at it.
It's a shame it never made it to home consoles. Great Review!
Now we finally have a home port of Daytona 2 (Sega Classic Racing 2) within the in-game arcade of the latest Yakuza game Like a Dragon Gaiden: Man Who Erased His Name and it’s an excellent emulated port. That, along with the decent Model 3 fighting game Fighting Vipers 2. I’ve also been enjoying Motor Raid in the virtual arcade. Had not played it before and it’s pretty fun. VF2 is also a good one in the virtual arcade as always.
Just the music brings back so many memories.
Sega is the best! Always has been, always will be!!!!!!!!!!
Model 3 hardware was monstrous and Sega knew just how to use it. Only the original Xbox would have a chance of approximating the visuals shown by this game and that arrived 3 years later. Nothing on console beat it until 2005 and Xbox 360 launched.
Daytona USA 2 represents the largest gap between arcade and console/PC game graphics and technology. The gap would quickly be closed in the following years with the next generation of consoles and 3D accelerated PC graphics cards.
It got closer but it never truly reached and surpassed until 10 years later. While other consoles were technically sound, they never rocked all those graphics and made it complete stick at 60fps. Martin Lockheed Model 3 board was an absolute BEAST!
SEGA please bring it home!
Thank god for SuperModel. Playing this at 32x9 resolution is epic.
I remember my buddy and I would play this and other Sega racing games at the arcade, grab some Burger King and play the same games late into the night at his place on Saturn and Dreamcast. Good lord, those were the days.
I'll be rewatching this a few times, love seeing the footage. I played Daytona 2 only a handful of times BITD.
As awesome as this game is, imo it had an impossible act to follow, the original Daytona was Arcade Gaming majesty which even 26 years later easily holds up today! :)
I remember playing Daytona 2. I played it at my sister's birthday party at the bowling alley in Cortland it was hella fun.
I played it at Jillians a few times
I was one of the people that felt like VR2 didn’t handle or look the way I expected. I only played it once or twice though (it was an expensive game!). If they redesigned the initial experience I guess I wasn’t alone. It’ll always be a shame that this game and Scud Racer never came to DC or Xbox. It’s actually heartening to see how great the emulator experience looks.
Why Sega hasn’t ported this game to consoles astounds me. They still have the licence given the first game is available to buy still.
The power edition challenge course was Also on Outrun 2 for the original Xbox as bonus stage 2 and also the SCUD Race Tracks excluding super beginner were also included as bonus stage 1
It's really depressing that Sega still doesn't care about this game. They'd rather pump out another million Yakuza games instead of actually releasing something fun again
Another well made episode thank you Sega Lord X
