  • Sega's Model 2 board heralded some of the most popular arcade games of the nineties. The first game, Daytona USA, still stands as an incredible technical achievement and proved to be one of Sega's most demanding games to port onto home consoles. In this video we're having a look at the original arcade release of Daytona USA, and Sega's attempts to bring this extraordinary game into our homes.

    Where possible, all footage is captured from my own consoles rather than emulators. What's your favourite port of Daytona USA? Did you get the Saturn port on release? If so, did it pale in comparison to Ridge Racer for you?

      I grew up with Daytona USA since a young teen and was sad when the local DnB that i used to work for dismantled eight Deluxe motion cabinets to make way for the new version. I spent tons of hours on the original Saturn. I loved all the different vehicles and horses you could use. Enjoyed your video. Thanks!

      When Daytona USA was new, I used to spend hours in the arcade playing it. Back then, I wasn't aware of the existence of Ridge Racer, because I only had an Amiga 500 for gaming. Soon, I switched to PC, and in July 1995 I read for the first time a rumor about a PC port of Daytona USA. I spent over a year waiting for it, and asked it as a Christmas present in 1996. When I installed it and saw it run for the first time, I was like... "What is this thig? This is not the game I love! The colors are wrong, the music is lower quality, there's almost nothing on screen and everything is so jerky!" Man, was I disappointed.
      That's the only port of Daytona I played until 2001, when... no, I didn't get Daytona USA 2001 for Dreamcast, because I never had a Dreamcast. In 2001, I got Daytona USA Deluxe , the PC port of Daytona USA Championship Edition. So the colors still did not match the arcade version, but (especially with the Direct3D patch) it was SO much smoother than the regular Daytona PC port. In 2004 I even started playing it in stereoscopy, with the nVidia stereo 3D drivers and the eDimensional shutterglasses.
      In early 2008, I convinced the author of nullDC to write a video plugin that supported stereoscopy according to the nVidia guidelines, and you know what that meant... Daytona USA 2001 in stereoscopy! From that moment, Daytona USA 2001 was my favorite port. I still play it often, in HD and stereoscopy on my HMZ-T1 head-mounted display. I also love Daytona Championship USA, even though I only know it because Sega leaked it last Christmas.

    The first Saturn port is for my money the most fun (well until the ps3/360 version)
    CE had awful controls and horrible music. The DC version controlled poorly and the colours didn’t look right, so it didn’t feel like Daytona.

    I played the arcade a few times back when it came out. But played it a lot on the Saturn. I know people bashed that version, but at the time was the only home port so couldn't compare it. Decent enough for me to enjoy. Also, it had the better version soundtrack over the arcade. Years later, I played and completed the PS3 version. No other words to describe than a perfect port. Now, I have the original arcade version on my model 2 emulator with a wheel/pedal/shifter setup reliving the good 'ol days!

    I liked the Dreamcast version a better (but I didn't play the arcade version very often before that, so I didn't have any expectations on the handling), but the 360 port was fantastic as well. Especially, when using a steering wheel. I really hoped that these ports would kickstart a series of arcade ports, but unfortunately, Sega stopped after just five games. If I didn't miss any, Daytona, VF2, Fighting Vipers, Sonic the Fighters and Virtual-On are the ones I remember.

    We actually have a theme park where I live where they have 8 Daytona units still linked up.
    I've always thought it could be so cool to gather a group to actually have a real match against 7 others but I don't even think I have 7 IRL friends so it's more of a pipe dream xD
    We used to have the Saturn version running at the arcade I was working at some years back and I would always make it a point to unlock the horse for play before we opened.
    It was one of the 2 only games I originally got for my Saturn in the day along with Virtua Cop 2 + the gun. Good times.
    I'm also pretty sure I recently saw a Daytona arcade at the amusement park.. I mean. It had the title "Daytona USA" but it was clearly a much never version with modern graphics. I'm not exactly sure when that was released.

    • @GamersGardenRetro
      @GamersGardenRetro  4 года назад

      Virtua cop 1&2 on the Saturn are amazing ports of the arcade games. I want to make my setup so that I can play the scart signal on a CRT whilst still sending it to my capture card. Once I can I’ll do a proper video on those games so I can capture real gameplay using the guns.

      For that last paragraph, are you talking about Daytona USA 2 or Daytona Championship USA?

  • @pixelpoppyproductions
    @pixelpoppyproductions 3 года назад +1

    I don’t own any modern consoles (except a Switch - BTW, the Virtua Racing port is perfect!). I had a Dreamcast but that port never appealed to me. Until the “recent” PS and Xbox releases, I’d argue strongly that the first attempt on the Saturn was the best overall, despite graphical issues.
    Remember, only a year earlier at home - we were stuck with mostly awful 2d software scaled racers on the Genesis (although I had Virtua Racing, it cost $90, which even today is insanely expensive). Or perhaps flat plane scaled racers on the SNES. Neither are even close to Daytona.
    The Saturn port was definitely not perfect - but it was a *huge* leap over what came home before. And realistically, a $400 home console was never going to match a $20k arcade board in power.
    It’s too bad SOJ shot themselves in the foot and rushed the port though. Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally and Virtua Cop 1/2 proved the Saturn could do “good” ports of Model 2 games. But it is what it is.
    I agree with your assessment that the rushed version we got hurt the Saturn immensely compared the PS1 though, even if a lot of the narrative wasn’t really true. And honestly, Ridge Racer wasn’t a very good game anyway ; other than the PS1 port it never would have been compared directly to Daytona.
    I did have the fortune of playing once at an arcade that had 8 full sized cabinets linked up. It was glorious, if only a fleeting memory.

    I agree with your sentiments for the most part, and do enjoy the Dreamcast port a lot even if it does feel "wrong". Have you tried that with a wheel? I haven't but have heard it improves the handling somewhat. I also understand that the Japanese release of Circuit Edition on the Saturn has much better handling than the Western releases (and also restores the original soundtrack as an option).

    • @GamersGardenRetro
      @GamersGardenRetro  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks and yes, I have a Dreamcast wheel and it's pretty good for Daytona 2001. I've also got the Saturn wheel but it feels kind of floaty so didn't get on too well. I might do a follow up video comparing the international releases of the Saturn game. I haven't played them as I only own the PAL release - a better handling version of Circuit Edition sounds pretty good though!

    Call me crazy, but i think i may like the way the Saturn version looks BETTER than the OG arcade version. I know it's inferior in every way shape or form, but i just *adore* how those pixely textures, low poly models and super heavy aliasing look together. Maybe it's because i was born in 1998 and thus never experienced when this game was considered the cutting edge, but the Saturn has an overwhelming charm that resonates with me a lot for some reason.

      Imagine if the Saturn release had just hit a solid 30fs like Ridge Racer, history could've been pretty different. I think you're right that everything was in place for a great port, but I also think the frame rate is just too low. Sega just aimed to high in bringing such an advanced game home, but there's no doubt that had the frame rate been higher the game would've been received far more positively.

The second best is the model 2 PC emulator which is ok but still glitchy and has an aweful user interface and very average force feedback effects.

    No Model 2 game ran at 60fps, they ran at 57fps. This is so commonly repeated and is it wrong.
    The first port you've wrongly called not successful, was infact very successful and very highly regarded by all that reviewed it. You are correct it was a rushed mess to look at, but you're absolutely incorrect that it was a failure. Shame they didn't spend another 12 months on it, if they did it would've been the port we should've got but really never did.
    Ridge Racer on PS1 wasn't even close to arcade perfect, it ran at half the frame rate, and well under half the resolution. It may be fairly polished, but it is a massive step away from the near arcade perfect port it often gets called. Very short and very basic game, it could've been done on the 32x minus the textures and played just as well. Daytona USA smoked Ridge Racer, in the arcades and at home. I like Ridge Racer, but it is a play 5 times and never again for 2-3 years game, no way you could spend a full day on it now.
    Daytona 2001 wasn't Daytona, any more than Daytona Championship Circuit Edition was. And what is with those gumby wheels sticking 4 feet out the sides of the car???

    Great retrospective! I was happy to hear you briefly mention how the Saturn's music of Daytona was improved. I've always felt this was the best version of the soundtrack between the arcade, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I'm not sure if it was simply remastered or re-recorded, but the Saturn's vocals are cleaner and more refined. For me, half the enjoyment of Daytona comes from the amazingly memorable soundtrack. While I also love the arcade soundtrack, the Saturn takes the top spot. I have the Saturn CD tracks ripped in lossless audio, and still to this day, I will play "Sky High" when I need a pick-me-up. While I'm very pleased with the Xbox 360/PS3 port, I only wish they would've added in an option to be able to use the OST from the Saturn version as a companion to the arcade original.

Daytona USA Deluxe was also another game where I really spent a lot of time, and the Dreamcast version actually felt pretty good, with handling adjustments, a nice "alternative" coat of paint and extra tracks but keeping the actual arcade driving.
