- Have you ever wondered why we never got a port of Daytona USA 2 for the Dreamcast or any other home console? Or what about Sega Super GT (SCUD Race)? Find out in this video.

I know I make a lot of SEGA related stuff (I'm getting kind of tired of it myself and want to move on to different things), but I wanted to make this video and release it before I leave to go back to school. If this video feels rushed, that's because it is. I had such a short amount of time to make it that it probably has to be a personal record.
(Audio recorded and editing started on 1/20 Rendered and uploaded 1/28/2018). Also notice how many times I say "considering the fact that". Игры
Daytona USA 2 has been ported to home consoles by way of the newest Yakuza games. I want to talk about it one day.
Man the Sega Model 3 was a freaking BEAST when it came out. You have to remember before most of us were wowed by the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur back in 1998 visually Virtua Fighter 3 was the GOAT and just blew every other fighting game away whilst I was still playing Tekken 2 on the PSOne!
I wished if Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 gets re-released for Nintendo Switch.
Words cannot describe how disappointing it is to find out why both Daytona USA 2 and SCUD Race never had home ports. Before you ask me, yes, the arcade version of the original Daytona USA game also did have superior graphics and a very smooth frame rate, unlike its Sega Saturn port, so you'd think SEGA would have done the same exact thing with this game for the Sega Saturn port by reducing its graphics and frame rate properly because then, if SEGA had more time to release both arcade games in this video for the PC and a few old video game consoles, it would have been convenient especially for SEGA fans who don't even have a local arcade near them (with the original arcade versions of these games inside). I remember playing the original arcade version of Daytona USA 2 at Chuck E. Cheese's many years ago, so either way, it would have been so awesome to see, purchase and play home versions of it, along with SCUD Race, because they're really fantastic!
ikr
It's worth noting that OutRun 2 does have sprint-course variations of the SCUD Race and Daytona USA 2 tracks as unlockables on the home Xbox version, so it seems pretty likely to me that it's car / series licensing that kept it from occurring in full.
The cars and geometry in scud race were modeled with quads, or quadrangles. Some of them are non planar, which can look a garbled mess when you convert them to triangles. In order to fix this, they would have had to have remodeled the cars and geometry to use triangles, which was probably more effort than they would have liked for a port.
Ian Curtis SEGA Rally 2 used quads as well for polygons, but they converted them into quads for Dreamcast and PC I think
The blurry Scud Race demo footage is *running* on a Dreamcast.
@@beeaye7944 Yes I know I've seen it. But the attribute interpolation ie texture coordinates won't look correct blindly converted to triangles.
I've played both of these games to death back in the day. I'm sure I've spent hundreds of dollars playing both o these legendary games!
"Pretty good"? Scud Race and Daytona 2 are just pretty good? Some of the best arcade racers eveeeeeeer!!!
That's why they definitely should have seen PC and console ports back in the early 2000s. In fact, had SEGA not caused any inconveniences with these awesome games by caring to make them arcade-exclusives, I would have loved to buy PC and PlayStation 2 versions of them in a heartbeat!
best arcade racing games ever!sega could still make another fortune from releasing these games!maybe call it something like "the 90's arcade gold pack"
yup
Exactly
Thanks for taking the time to put this together! I used to also wonder about this back in the day.
Excellent video love both racing games got Daytona USA 2001 on dreamcast and Daytona USA on Sega Saturn and Xbox live and playstation network. Thank you for sharing your excellent video with all of us from Alan Brooke from Guildford living in Godalming Surrey
Love this video, please make more like this!
In a ferryboat company in my country, they do have arcades of Daytona USA 2, Scud Race, and House of the Dead lol on the boats
Absolutely love the Sega model tech. Especially model 2 and 3. Incredible tech always will be. Wish the Dreamcast would of had these games back then. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.
I’ve played Daytona USA 3, and it’s actually pretty good. It’s not really a sequel though. It’s more like an HD remake of the first game. I don’t see that as a bad thing though. As long as the game plays well, that’s fine by me.
Update: it is confirmed that daytona USA 2 will come to home console as a mini-game for "Like a dragon: Gaiden" as "Sega Racing Clasic 2"
Release november 9th this year and available for Playstation, Xbox, and PC😊😊😊
Real nice video!
How I miss these 2 arcade games. Used to work at an arcade saloon and these 2 were my favorite racing games. The best part was that I could play them for free after or before my work shift. I had all the records on the Scud Race, took me a while but I got pretty good at it. Unfortunately the saloon closed back in 2006 and I never played them again :(
Miss them so much
That's an interesting story and I'm glad you shared it.
Found this video looking for info on the Daytona 2 Deluxe cabinet I just bought.
Seems to work minus the monitor... which I am going to look into now.
I had a Sega Saturn and a Dreamcast. That Daytona song is etched into my brain.
When i see scud race i feel pain in my heart. I feel so bad when i see never was released on PC or Sega systems...
Got some really good news, Daytona USA 2(Albeit named Sega Racing Classic 2) is coming to the next Yakuza game! Hoping Scud Race makes the conversion one day as well. SEGA FINALLY DID IT!
Very well done video. I'll support you. Make more like this. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks man. I have some ideas I want to make into videos, but I'm busy with school right now. There will be more coming soon though.
@4:30 So, does anyone have a link to the free Daytona Championship game mentioned here?
Ever since Daytona 3 got massive updates back in 2019, do you think it could be ported to Home consoles?
It’s 2019 and the Xbox live arcade store has not been taken down yet so you can rest peacefully tonight
Thanks man
Awesome vid Daytona USA 2 pe is my favorite game :)
ive heard someone remaking a scud race into PC game long time ago, like a spinoff or kinda fangame, but dontknow how far the developing going now
Really hope they can port Daytona USA 1/2 and Scud Race to Switch. I mean, they already ported some games under Sega Ages so they have no other excuse to not port them. Come on, Sega!!!
Daytona championship use is actually quite decent
It's more a remake of the first game than a sequel but is still pretty good
I thought I was the only one who wanted these ported to a gen 6 console (especially Dreamcast). The licensing issue w/ Scud race makes scene. I really wanted a port of that game on DC because as a kid I’d watch those FIA races on speed vision in the USA lol. I was happy to get Test Drive Le Mans on DC but that was more sim-cade.
SEGA PLEASE PORT SCUD RACER AND DAYTONA 2 GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Well Brak, growing up as a teenager I dreamed for a Harley-Davidson port myself after being hooked on the deluxe machine in a Dave and Buster's. As for Daytona 2? Um... it's one of the best racing games ever made in my opinion, if not THE best ever made. I've played everything from Pole Position to Cruis'n Exotica, and there isn't any racer out there that compares to any of those in terms of controls except for possibly two other drivers. Drifts are tight and easy to learn. High replay value. Outside of emulation, the best thing to do to preserve these Model 3 classics and play them at home without a giant cabinet is possibly the original PCB and a suitable PSU, which if you are skilled with wiring, it isn't impossible to hook up pot-based controllers to, and worth a shot. :)
Could Daytona USA 3 work on iMac?
*Laughs in Windows*
strangely reminds me of MrThunderwig video also you cant really download daytona 3 anymore luckily i got it
he probobly got his information from the same place
Well, now that Sega have the Daytona license again, judging by Daytona Championship USA.
They could do something like the PSN and XBOX Arcade Live porta of Daytona USA 1.
Just do it for next gen and possibly PC.
What if there's a lost port (like Half-Life on the DC) of Daytona USA 2 that exists?
I believe that's absolutely possible.
There's nothing.
I'm pretty sure Daytona USA 2 was planned for a Dreamcast home port at some point, but it was just that, a project that would've eventually came to fruition if the Dreamcast had some commercial success after 2001. You have to bear in mind that when Daytona USA 2001 (the remake) came out for the Dreamcast back in late 2000 the console was about to be discontinued, so any chance of a port of the sequel was dismissed by that point.
Also, both Scud Race and Daytona USA 2, they run on a Model 3 board, which is quite an expensive unique custom hardware, and it would've taken over a year to actually reprogram each game to make it run on the Dreamcast, which is a completely different hardware.
For example, check Sega Rally 2 Dreamcast port, originally a beautiful 60fps rock solid Model 3 game, a total stunner at the arcades. This port was done on a budget, with old development kits under Windows CE and it probably took over half a year to get it done. The results? An average port with janky framerate and a whole different graphical feel compared to the original. It's a good game though, and you can play it with locked stable 30fps with a code, but it feels like a "lite version" of the Model 3 game.
Edit: Back in the day most of the Sega teams were working on their own original IPs for the Dreamcast (Skies of Arcadia, Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue, and so on) so having to reprogram/rewrite some "old" games (remember Scud Race is from 1996!) from another hardware to maybe just get an "almost good" port on the Dreamcast... they were probably not up for that job.
It's because of licensing hassles, and because game journalism has been downplaying arcade games for years in favor of "cinematic gaming experiences," giving them bad reviews claiming you can finish the game in 20 minutes by mashing continue, even though when they post videos of them playing games at trade shows they clearly aren't good at video games.
Unfortunately it's too long ago and the only people who care are old people who probably moved from from gaming by now
I was born in 1998 and I care for the games
Daytona USA 2001 gets a bad rap as with the joypad it is close to unplayable, but with the steering wheel the handling was what I considered arcade perfect and as such it was hugely enjoyable.
It’s also worth pointing out that Sega Rally 2 was a Model 3 arcade board with highly detailed graphics and I believe that was a US launch title. It has frame rate issues (especially on the final stage) that makes me remember the original on the Saturn more fondly, but I’m sure that they could have tweaked the engine significantly to come up with either or both of these titles at a close to arcade level from that original development cycle.
I fondly remember the days of finding a forum that had a bunch of poeple working on getting controllers and wheels to work with the "update" Sega uploaded for Dayton Championship USA for anyone to download. It was magical to read people figuring out how to get the controller and wheels to work and then finally being able to play the game with a wheel! I wish Sega would do a legit port over to consoles and PC. Video on my page of me playing the Easy track :) The forum thread has long since be deleted after Sega finally took down the download and realized they fucked up.
Daytona Championship is not by any means Daytona 3 but instead yet another remake of Daytona 1.
Facts 💯
I’m not sure if you guys know what Midway Games is or what they are known for.
They should Release Daytona battle on the edge on Xbox Marketplace for 6.99
port 2 for the 30th anniversary sega
I think the ports could of been great but difficult. Sega Rally 2 port sucked but VF3 port was spectacular.
I think that Daytona USA 2 being ported to the Dreamcast is just a rumor.
Yeah that's okay because they Sega model 3 emulator only for the PC version you can play Daytona USA 2 in other arcade games
Still is a shame Sega couldn't put both racing games for the Sega Dreamcast.
That's the best emulator I've ever played (especially since you can add custom music)
They are pretty playable on PC Supermodel emulator... nearly arcade perfect.
Of course
the footage in the video is from Supermodel
I just don't buy the official excuse that Sega didn't want the Dreamcast to be known as an "Arcade port machine".
In fact, it's demonstrably BS; Sega ported TONS of their arcade titles--including Model 3 games, to the Dreamcast; Sega Rally 3, Virtua Stryker, Virtua Fighter 3TB...
And not only did they port Model 3 (and some Model 2) games to the Dreamcast, they *specifically* made arcade hardware BASED on the Dreamcast architecture with the Naomi, and then proceeded to port almost all of THOSE titles home.
This is clearly *not* the behavior of a company that is self-conscious about being "arcade centric" (which is a really silly excuse to begin with...)
So why didn't Sega bring Daytona 2 and Scud Race over? I think it's pretty simple;
Converting Model 3 games (especially ones as speed/hardware intensive as those racers are) onto inferior hardware without making giant concessions would be nearly impossible--For evidence of this, look at the Dreamcast ports of VF3TB, Sega Rally 3, and even the Dreamcast Scud Race demo--frame rates have been cut, texture quality and character models are diminished, and draw distance and track details are much worse as well.
I think it's simply a matter of the Dreamcast not being powerful enough to handle flawless ports, and Sega not wanting to admit it's brand spanking new 1999 technology wasn't up to the task of matching its own 1995 arcade hardware--especially after the Sega Saturn debacle Sega had just come out of.
Instead, they shift their focus on to making original Naomi arcade titles (Crazy Taxi, Ferrari 355) that *can* be (near) flawlessly ported home, and original Dreamcast titles like Daytona USA 2001 to fill in the gaps in the library.
I don't think Sega will ever officially admit to this, but I still have hope that they'll eventually release these titles on hardware that *can* handle perfect home ports...
I like Daytona 3
Daytona Championship USA is literally just a reskin of Daytona 2001.
Daytona USA on Dreamcast is actually a stand alone game not a remake
Mandela effect
I played both on dreamcast
Not kidding
Also scud 64 exists
Omg scud 64 is gone? It was a rip off this is getting ridiculous
uhh, what?
Nice channel guys like you should be in the top not click Bait or fucked up Elsa and spider man
Thank you so much, I'm glad you feel that way. Honestly I hate clickbait as much as you do.
Dreamcast couldn't handle them. No matter what anybody says it couldn't. They tried with scud race it wasnt up to scratch
Dreamcast stronger then sega model 3
Dreamcast Vgabox That is factually wrong.
@@dreamcastvgabox3640 The Model 3 arcade board costs like 20 times more than a Dreamcast, HOW THE FUCK WOULD THE DREAMCAST BE MORE POWERFUL THAN THAT?
@@FranciscoFJM Model 3 topped out at 1.5 million polys per second. Dreamcast/Naomi topped at 4.5 million with all effects on. Couple that with culling and Dreamcast blows model 3 out the water.
Model 3 only cost so much because it was custom and delivered in small numbers where Naomi/Dreamcast were delivered in millions.
what are you like 5? this game is very memorable.
actually im way older than 5 get your facts straight
zeronightEX You realize she was joking, right? Obviously you’re not 5. Anyone with a brain can tell that. The reason she asked is because it seemed weird to her that an awesome game such as Scud Race could be considered forgettable by you. And to be honest, I find it weird too. How exactly is this game not memorable? And don’t say it’s just because it’s not Daytona USA.
@@jakescartoons6045 How dare you not like the same things as i do?
@@FranciscoFJM I think you're missing the point.
sega was in pretty bad shape by this point. they would've probably outsourced everything and it would be terrible and detrimental to dreamcast as the bad ports were to the saturn before it.
Licensing is complete bull tbh
Dreamcast couldn't handle them unfortunately some people can't accept this.
Dreamcast did handle F355 Chalenge really well so I think it would do the same with these two.
Why should we? Ferrari F355 on DreamCast looked better than Scud Race.
Scud Race and Daytona USA 2 could have been fantastic on dreamcast but they didn't like joy amateurs 😒😠
Dreamcast couldn't handle them they tried but it was not acceptable so they cancelled it
It's that simple the dreamcast couldn't do them .any other bullshit you say isn't right
Phil Dawson you are completely correct they tried to port scud race but it was garbage .this guy is a typical bum boy after the fact .cheers for the input
Todd Jameson no logic at all just denial and lies and hypocrisy
Vince Fontaine this guy is a complete wanker vince .do not waste your time
Todd Jameson yeah ok .we get it you hate people talikng logic and facts .hope this clears things up
Only the original xbox was capable of running these games at the time. Unfortunately this is a fact
