    As far as content go this version is the best.
    For gameplay though, the PS3 version with a G27 steering is the best way to get the true arcade experience at home.

    I played this game to death. My theory on the handling is Nagoshi styled it after Scud Race more than Daytona. It was waaay easier to spin your car in Scud Race than in Daytona 1/2, particularly in the overpowered McClaren car. The Unicorn is essentially the same thing. It's unforgiving but oh so satisfying when you beat your lap time.

      Considering that Scud Race was going to be ported on the Dreamcast, is possible that they recycled the engine made for the unrealized port, thus leaving some elements of Scud Race in it.

The game is fantastic and I find this version the ultimate experience if you're a fan of the arcade version of Daytona USA.

      Sega really fucked up on how the arcade cabinet of the "new" 2017 Daytona USA cabinets should of been. It was basically the 1st game of the series with the handling of the dreamcast port and a fresh coat of paint but looks water-down compared to the last arcade release of Daytona USA... Which was a full sequel to Daytona USA. And the worst part SEGA called the 2017 cabinet "Daytona USA 3" at one point but thankfully the fans caught that on quickly and rioted to the point SEGA renamed it to "Daytona USA: Championship" which is a much more fitting name for it.
      Here what SEGA should of done with "Daytona USA: Championship":
      - Make the fresh coat of paint a bit more exaugurated and the stock cars look more cartoonish yet still having a down-to-earth approach like in Ridge Racer 7.
      - Make the cars/screen shake rapidly to give out a good sense of speed over 300 km/h (And the option to turn it off for some people).
      - Give us a good selection of cars from the "Old" and "New" games.
      - GIVE US ALL THE PREVIOUS TRACKS BACK IN THE DREAMCAST AND DAYTONA USA 2, and freshen them up to the new coat of paint.
      - Give us a in-depth customization of parts/tuning shop like in Initial D arcade games, a reason to win more races to upgrade the stock cars of your choice!
      - Make a card save system that can save our Cars/Career progress in the cabinets. It's very possible since Sega Still made Initial D cabinets in Japan.
      I'm still baffled that NONE of the team who worked on this game thought about any of these ideals before on the surface on looking at this. So much imagination that they can do to the DAYTONA USA series and they choose to do nothing with it.

      Hi all! The software I use is called wheel2xinput-v0.1.5. Adjusting it is painful process, and you need to very carefully read the Readme file and do some trials. It works perfectly fine with RetroArch and Daytona USA. In the game Options menu, you have to enable Vibrations.

    Speaking of Genki games, have you compared different handling models between Daytona USA 2001 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer games? Genki sure did different handling models in racing games as experiments, until Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift (2003, but US release delayed till 2006) getting more realistic on that front with help of real-life racing drivers in Japan.

  • @Sixfortyfive
    @Sixfortyfive Год назад +2

    The only thing that I really held against this specific game was that it wasn't a port of Daytona 2, which came out 3 years earlier but never once saw a home release. The original Saturn port didn't look very good and lacked multiplayer, but the gameplay was a close enough match to the arcade to the point where I was satisfied with using it to practice my lines and techniques between trips to the arcade where I could play the "real" version. So when this dropped for the Dreamcast it just felt kind of redundant. Yeah it was nice to have a console version with good visual performance and a lot of customization options, and I always thought that the complaints about the handling were a bit overstated, but it would've been so much better if at the very least they added tracks from Daytona 2 or Super GT / Scud Race. Every track outside of the original 3 in this game felt really underwhelming. For what it's worth, the online play was fine by standards of the time.

    • @Mach5Mike
      @Mach5Mike  Год назад +1

      I appreciate the perspective of someone who played the game during it's time, especially talking about the online portion since I was curious about how it might have felt. I cut a line from the end of this video bringing it up, but I take it you enjoyed the PS3/360 port of the arcade game?

    • @Sixfortyfive
      @Sixfortyfive Год назад +4

      @@Mach5Mike Well my brother and I saved up a few hundred bucks just to buy a Saturn for Daytona in 1995, so getting a legitimately arcade-perfect version of the game for $15 or whatever was pretty nice. And long overdue lol. I even really appreciated that they kept the "no assistance + tire wear" alternate game mode intact, which is a sparsely documented feature that's actually in the arcade game.
      I only wish it had LAN play. But that's what emulators are for, I suppose.
      I've been considering just doing a series of retrospectives on Sega arcade games as a means of dusting off the cobwebs of my own channel, and their racing games are a big reason why. From Hang-On to F-Zero AX they had the genre on lock, with Namco being their only consistently meaningful challenger.

      Deleted my earlier comment since I decided to look into what you were talking about. The issue may lie in the S-Video cables I'm currently using for consoles like the Dreamcast, the higher quality ones seem to prevent checkerboarding. You don't just move the analog stick left and right to turn. You have to hold the stick up and then move.
      But the guys in the know will find a way to play the game with a steering wheel like it was intended.

    Drafting doesn't exist in Daytona USA, there's zero benefit to driving behind other cars. Not in the arcade game, nor in the home console remakes. Drafting only became a thing starting with Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge, where it is specifically called out as a new feature during the game's attract mode as "slingshot".
