Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real PS2 hardware.
2. There is a South Korean version of this if you're looking for an alternative language.
3. There are about a dozen cars you can unlock in this one. All are licensed from makers like Ford and Subaru.
4. There are a ton of variations for the tracks. Most have day/night/weather versions.
5. Most of the cars feel the same unless you go tinkering with the tires and weight distribution. That's when the game really starts to feel different from the original.
6. The original Sega Rally that is included in the LE, was never sold on its own.
7. My Framemeister hated this game. The constantly switching resolution caused blackouts bad enough to cause me to start races a few seconds behind.
8. This game with the original Sega Rally is not overly expensive. I have seen it go under $50 pretty regularly.
A huge shame that this never got international releases because it really looks fab.

I know these dudes know a lot more than I do about sales, I just don’t see how this wouldn’t sell enough to turn a profit in the US. Even a limited release. Localization wouldn’t be much of a problem...
Sega used to and still do make some puzzling decisions. Very lucky that Sonic prints money. 😅

@@chanhjohnnguyen1867 ah makes sense. You’re right, all games needed to be big, deep, sometimes over complicated, and have some melodramatic story.
Still, this seems deep and content filled enough to be a late PS2 game. Hell sell it for a discount. Bet it’d move units...maybe more in the UK though.
Again, I’m just speculating and have no idea. Maybe good numbers showed it’d bomb huge. Hard for me to give Sega the benefit of the doubt sometimes

Likely it’s relative closeness to the release of the PS3. Sega may have worried it’d get overlooked.
I found this in a game shop in Japan back in 2008 and could not believe it! A PS2 port of the original game!
But 2006 itself is pretty good fun. Review pretty much spot on.
Never knew Sega put out an Sega rally 2006 game, this is one of the cool things about your video, i get to learn about great games that i would other wise never get to see!
Man, I def would have bought this game back in the day. I was really into rally at the time. Pretty crazy it didn't come to the US or Europe.
I imported this game last year and have enjoyed it quite a lot. I just couldn't manage to get an event started in career mode but had a lot of fun in the arcade mode. Glad you covered this game SLX!
There's a trick for that:
· Use your smartphone's camera and Google Translate, you'll be able to translate menus no problem. I've already completed 2 seasons of the career mode like this!
And now its fully translated and its just awesome to play
SEGA Rally 2006 also featured a great OST from music composers famous for the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise, such as Jun Senoue, Tomonori Sawada, Naofumi Hataya, Tomoya Ohtani, Richard Jacques and Hideki Naganuma!
Awesome review as always. Next Sega Rally Revo. I loved that game on my PSP so much. Just commuting on the bus and flying trough those gorgeous tracks...
480p is not only impressive for the OG SEGA Rally, but for the PS2 itself 😋

@@SonicXXtreme yup I still own tourist trophy for my ps2 and indeed it does do 1080i gameplay.
@@SonicXXtreme 1080i or, if you consider the actual rendering resolution, 960x540p. The only 6th gen game that renders 1920x1080 interlaced is Dragon's Lair for Xbox classic. Every other 1080i game like GT4, Tourist Trophy, MX vs ATV, Enter the Matrix are not real 1920x1080 but some other resolution upscaled to 1080i. And to render true 1080i on Dragon's Lair is a miracle with just 64MB of RAM. Even the 60+ 720p games on Xbox are some kind of miracle, some even running at full 60fps.

I swear when you see what the original Xbox especially but also PS2 could do it really puts the current consoles to shame.
They gave up on 60fps after that generation and went straight to 30 focusing instead on "graphics".

I discovered the 95 game by accident when getting some games for my HDD PS2. It's a fantastic version. I'll be interested in your thoughts on Revo on PSP.

The saddest thing is that I don't feel like coming across Career Mode playthroughs here. Most, if not all, SR2006 playthroughs are Arcade runs, and I'm hoping someone would make a playthrough of it.
One thing about Career Mode though is that how you tune your car. I did have a go at the mode long ago and find out that the part(s) you buy would determine what car class you'll be in, affecting your entry to some of the events, even your starter car can move to a class higher with a better set of parts.
That aside, SR2006 is indeed a gem.
The career mode seems so in depth, that I genuinely wish I could play it. I've never been able to find a patched or translated version.

Well i have both and i'd say they barely qualify as simulations at all. Not sure if you're implying that having realism in a game makes it boring but i'd certain argue against that notion.
@@RetroGamesBoy78 I definitely prefer arcade racers. Give me Hydro Thunder and Sega Rally over Gran Turismo and Collin McCrae any day! Whatever the case, the vibrant arcade visuals found in most Sega arcade franchises was definitely missing in Sega Rally 2006. Then again, 2006 wasn't an arcade game!
@@SEGAHEADDY tbf i don't really see to much of a difference in the visuals on the whole. Many arcade games that use real world tracks or tracks that look very close in style.
Its often the attention grabbing music, game mechanics, that really sets them apart, oh and the over the top "announcer" that usually grace arcade games. ;-)

Maybe kind of a placebo but when driving through night, change camera to bumper cam help lighting up ahead a bit.
I always use chase cam, but when I encountered night stage in Sega Rally 2006, change to bumper cam before my co-driver says "GO".
It's a shame that never made it over, it has a lot of visual cues that remind me of Gran Turismo 4, but more arcade-y. I loved that visual style.
As a fan of arcade racers, I've had great time with Sega Rally Revolution on my PSP. If only I knew about this game. Thank you for the review.
Damn ! I always thought this was a port of SEGA RALLY REVO (aka the PS3 / Xbox 360), and it include the original arcade version too ? This is Christmas !
If I could have 1 wish, it would be that every Sega game released from 2001-2009 would have been on Dreamcast
The problem is if you loved Sega Rally Championship you loved the beautiful Lancia Delta in Martini graphics, if you wanted to drive a Subaru you'd buy Colin McRae 2004, 2005, WRC etc.
I personally blame the gaming landscape in the US (and to a lesser extent, europe) for this game being stranded in Japan. most of the 7th generation consoles were, at the very least, getting ready to launch, and Us westerners tended to be early adoptors of next gen stuff at the time, so a lot of us were getting ready to leave the ps2 behind (being the target system of the infamous phoenix games didn't help either). In japan however, where arcades still thrive with avengence, clder consoles tend to have a longer shelf life and most people don't rush out to take the plunge (atari2600 notwithstanding) (this is the reason megaman and bass on the super famicom exists, after all). for me this early adoption ended during the current generation-the switch and 3ds are the only 8th gen systems I have since the others are too damn expensive, mutch to the ammuzement of Dave Ramzy.
Crazy how this never came out in the west considering the popularity of the series particularly in Europe.
Sega Rally never really did the trick for me, but I also never really gave it a fair shot. This looks like a great game. Unfortunately it seems like racing games don't receive very many fan translations.

Shame they moved away from that Lancia Stratos as the cover vehicle. I know Sega doesn't own the design but it's still one of the coolest and most iconic Sega racing cars in my mind. Maybe even tied for #1 along with the Daytona Hornet.
I imported the same pack that you have SLX. I actually mainly bought it for the original game port, but 2006 turned out to be a great addition as well.
I bought a Japanese PS2 a while ago since there was so much Sega stuff in that library. Have not regretted it once
The presentation is so different, its like they couldn't decide to stay in the arcade roots or chase Colin McCray... just looks so bland... Needs the arcade style poppin colors! Also, the announcer should not be realistic as if heard through a mic, neither of the previous games did so.

A lot of PS2 3D games seem to have that bland look.
Everybody was into desaturated colours in this era. Most of the movies looked like this too.

@@vram1974 just read a reddit thread about this and one explanation is colour matching the CG in the early 00's was challenging so they'd just mute the colours in the film to match it instead. Think that trend bled over to videogames to make them look 'gritty and cinematic'.
480i is not a problem you can force it to 480p using GSM

You should talk about Sega Rally Revo for xbox360, that game had phenominal mud/track deformation.

Man, I was thinking YESTERDAY about this game.
It overall looks good for a Playstation 2 rally game but the snow tracks appear a tiny bit beige, as though they need just a little more blue tint.

Could have been a serious competitor to other great racing games on the PS2 in western regions. Too bad it never came to be, this game looks awesome.
I've played this on an emulator and it's such a shame this was only released in Japan. It's the Sega Rally 3 we all deserve.

...but... I remember playing a SEGA Rally demo of a NEW SR game on the Xbox 360. Is this that game?
I recall one of their key selling points was the technology of having the terrain change shape depending on how the cars roll over the snow, and dirt. I always wanted to see that tech put to use in other racing games moving forward.

sega rally lost it's charm when it became more like dirt rally or v-rally and far less looking like , well, the boxy first game, for me, it will always be the first game that is my one true love, what we need is a remaster for the first one in the spirit of virtua racing, and daytona also.

I like a lot Sega Rally, Sega Touring Car on Saturn. And only once run this Sega Rally 2006. I found it col but on JAPAN. So you tell that this game is really good!!

I bought this specifically for the Sega Rally bonus disc. I tried to get into the career mode on SR 2006 but the language barrier is just to much trouble to navigate.
It's definitely a pain. I fiddled with it enough to get started, but there's a lot to digest.

When I found out about this package, I knew I had to have it. Sega Rally 2006 has the best handling dynamics. It reminds me of Colin Macrea 2.0, but with an actual sense of speed. This "rally" needs to be re-mastered and translated for other markets as I imported a PS2 just to play it. Sega Rally Championship 1995 is simply icing on the cake, especially in 480p. I felt like Sega gave up on the US market by deciding to not release it here. We got REVO instead. Oof..
I wish that that Sega rally 2006 came to the USA so very one could play it. 😀👍🎮

It does look and run pretty good for a PS2 game. And I can tell by watching you race that the vehicles handle much like the originals. Which was part of what made them great. It would've been a great game to play.
But by 2004 I had a well paying job and come mid 2005 I brought a powerful PC to play Half-life 2 & Doom 3 with ease. Abandoning consoles after that. Though I did buy a real cheap second hand PS3 in 2012 just to play Metal Gear Solid 4. Then gave the console to my nephew once I'd finished the game.
The only console I still have on the shelf is my original NES that my brother and I got for Christmas 1989 when I was 4.
How about a look into Sega Rally for XB360/PS3. Must have been a Release very close to this one.
It still shocks me Sega would keep new entries in series like Sega Rally or solid remasters like Nights Into Dreams only on the PS2 and only in Japan!

kinda surprised this never came put in the west, as it seems like a solid racing game. the original sega rally arcade game is a nice bonus, though to me it seems like something that could have fit on the standard version of the game..

I actually intended to. I cut the script to get it down to 12 mins and accidently left it out.

Didn't even know this one existed. And that is had a better than arcade perfect version of the original one. Well, I will have to make due with Sega Rally Revo on the PS3, it's a fun game and with the track deformation and steering wheel, I think it's still the best Sega Rally experience.
So glad I kept my PlayStation 3, as I’ve still go Sega Rally Online installed. So many digital Sega games that you just can’t get anymore 🤪
Once again leave it to Sega to not release a game like this to it's western fans. A far better Rally game is Rallisport Challenge 2 for the Xbox. In terms of graphics, options and replay it walks over Sega Rally. It's fun and has a balance between realistic and arcade gameplay. It even had 16 player link gameplay,which I played quite a bit,and online play. It's a shame but by that point Sega's racing games had been left far behind.
Is this compatible with a wheel? Not sure if Force Feedback was a thing back then

Sega needs to make a new modern version of this. I would be way more excited to buy that over the sonic racer games. Do it! Come on now!
