SEGA's Forgotten Racing Gems

- When it comes to Arcade Racing its hard to look away from Sega, one of the biggest contributor of the genre but just like every single company at the time, the allure of making a Gran Turismo competitor was too hard to resist, which resulted in Sega GT for the Dreamcast and its follow up for the original Xbox, both providing unique experiences yet not many talks about them, which is why I went and decided to give them a try and see what these games have to offer.

I will never forget getting Sega GT 2002 as one of my first Xbox games as a kid. It came as a combination disc with jet set radio future. Another amazing game in it's own right.
YO SAME
Same. It was a great game.
Same. It let you play music saved to your xbox instead of the game's soundtrack. I loved that feature and don't know any other game that had it.
Best combo game pack Xbox ever graced us all with. If only those two games had backwards compatibility cause I'd love to play both Sega GT 2002 and JSRF again.
@@LykanPrototype I had the same combo JSRF & SEGA GT 2002 oh how I miss those games.
Man, Sega was cooking back in the early 2000s. The Carrozzeria, being able to buy used car parts and the parts themselves degrading as they get used and the ability to set the price of the car you want to sell ("no lowballers, I know what I have") are all interesting ideas. The fact that we didn't get another game with a car builder like Sega GT until this year with the recent WRC game by EA Sports shows how Sega GT was ahead of it's time (or devs just didn't think it was worth doing until this year). The parts degradation mechanic sounds cool but I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't like the idea of losing a race because a random part failed as it would feel like being cheated out of a win by RNG mechanics (in fact, unreliability as a game mechanic isn't used in racing games because of this, the only other game I can think of that had something like that was F1 97 for the PS1).
Carrozeria featured definitely the ace of this game with ability to create your own car with some nice development for performance and looks that looks neat back in millennium
Sega GT was actually a good Gran Turismo clone. It has good graphics, good amount of cars and a pretty decent rival.
Sega GT wasn't really a "Gran Turismo clone" it was actually just it's own thing that was trying compete with Gran Turismo 2. Like how Forza Motorsport is competing with Gran Turismo now.
Gran Turismo did set the mold for console driving simulators, didn't it?
my whole childhood all i remember was its music and the lighting at the dealership. Atleast Sega GT 2002 was for sure more or so a GT3 clone. I was barely able to tell which was which when swapping consoles when I was like 6 years old. Sweet as hell times. I can't thank both of those games enough for getting me into jazz and 80s/90s cars
Sega actually had to make rivals to popular franchises because they couldn't convince publishers to make games for them. Like sports games and fighting games.
No it wasn't good. Too limited, controls wasn't great, AI was shit and compared to GT2 it felt like a alpha version of a game. Just because it's old and people are blinded by idiotic nostalgia, doesn't turn a turd into a diamond.
Aside from knowing Daytona, Outrun and Scud Racer I never knew that Sega went ahead with a game like this. It's quite interesting to see that even they tried to dip into the GT craze at the time, I'm always learning more about old games here lol. Great video as always Dove, props to you and Shari for putting out another well made documentary.
Chronicle mode is one of my favorite things in any racing game I've played. I loved slowly making the Stingray not a brick
I wish this game was an backwards compatibility for the current Xbox. I missed playing SEGA GT 2002 on the 1st Gen Xbox.
As an og Xbox kid, Sega GT Online was my Gran Turismo... and my Forza as well for the year or so before that came out. It had a great carlist, interesting game modes and gave you a feeling of ownership maybe only TDU matched since then. Though I don't think I ever completed the chronicle mode, perhaps I should fire it up this weekend.
Heck yes, using the jet set radio Future music during Sega GT 2002. I had the original Xbox demo disc of the two of them. It had a few game trailers I believe Buffy the vampire Slayer and stuff like that
I never played the original game, but GT2002 is amazing.
I used to play the mess out of Sega GT 2002 as a kid on the Xbox. It came bundled with Jet Set Radio Future and man I enjoyed the time I spent with it from the cars to the banger menu soundtrack as well.
02:48 - 02:53 License Extra (E), B, A, and San Andreas (SA).
I'm so happy you took the time to talk about 2002, a lot of people skip it since you can't emulate it, but it really is a complete overhaul of the game that makes it a far more viable competitor to GT.
Truly a unique experience with a lot of depth to be had, especially with wear and tear.
Why can’t it be emulated?
@@fordmanx3 not exactly can't be emulated but more so OG Xbox emulation is not in a really good spot, the footage I got of 2002 for editing had a lot of problems with shadows and reflections (you can still spot them in this vid). even the Forza Motorsport 1 vid also had a lot of issues with textures and tanking frames on Dove's high-ish rig.
@@Sharicitesoo its pretty much difficult too emulate OG Xbox games??
@@fordmanx3 I'm late, but this is very much not the case. Xemu is actually getting really really good, especially recently; though Sega GT 2002 isn't playable without slowdowns currently. It runs at about half speed or less regardless of hardware.
dayum,
I used to play Sega GT as a kid.
Completely forgot about it over time, But seeing it again sparked those memories instantly.
I remember thinking this game looks pretty good, but it looks better than i remember it does.
Was so excited when I found Sega GT, Test Drive: LeMans, and F355 Challenge for dirt cheap at a pawn shop years ago. Everything about the packaging and menus made it look like it was right up my alley. But oh man...that handling. Boat handling is a pretty accurate description of the physics. I've also heard someone say it was like driving a skateboard on a pogo stick. Didn't matter what kind of car I chose or what kind of tuning I did, everything handled like absolute trash. Got frustrated and gave up after about 10 hours.
Test Drive: Le Mans on the other hand, was a game I knew nothing about, and absolutely blew me away. The day to night transitions and weather changes were awesome, and I wish I could have experienced it when it originally came out.
The bodywork feature reminds me of the game Apex: Racing Evoluzion. Anyone remembers that game?
Sega GT was an amazing game. But something about Sega GT 2002, It just wasn't hitting like how the first Sega GT was hitting. The Original Sega GT has a gem. But since Sega did a "Sega's Power Surge" Reveal Trailer during The Game Awards. Is a good chance that they might bring back the Sega GT Series to compete with Forza Motorsport & Gran Turismo.
Theres not much room in the market for another racer. Even though I would love it. Maybe they should blend Outrun and Sega GT
I love Sega GT! Especially 2002 and Online on the Xbox. Those games were fantastic! I hope we could see another Sega GT game one day.
2:50 "E, B, A, and YOU PICKED THE WRONG HOUSE, FOOL!" 🤣
I like the way you use backsound from "Judgement" and "Lost Judgement" game.. Their BGM is so damn good..
Nice one Dove!!!
As a Sega GT 2002 Speedrunner, gotta respect the fact that you use JSRF songs here, as a reference of Combo Disc :D
In Europe Sega GT for Dreamcast was over shadowed by MSR. Sega Europe held Sega GT back and kept it hidden in favour of promoting MSR. Sega GT released with no fanfare on the same day as MSR, months later the Dreamcast was disconnected.
Tbf they made the right call there - MSR absolutely mops the floor with driving that actually feels good, instead of whatever physics they're going for with Sega GT
Loved Sega GT on Dreamcast.
Sega gt 2002 is my all time favorite racing game. It had a vibe, an atmosphere unmatched, and it takes me back to a really special time in my life. It truly sucks ass that you can't play it on Xbox One 😢
When you get better driving skills and learn suspension tuning this game is a real joy to play. I loved playing this game so much. Oh and when you build your own cars you can be unstoppable!
Sega GT on the OG Xbox was so great. The night driving was excellent for the time, and the selection of cars was fun. Selling your car was fun and decorating your garage was basic but interesting.
I liked the sega gt2002 thing were you could add things to your garage, and used performance parts. It was just a little detail but it made the game a little more fun.
Racing games on Dreamcast are super underrated. MSR, Le Mans, Daytona USA, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 1 & 2, etc. Definitely have to give Sega GT a try.
One of the xbox demo discs has a downloadable Sega GT 2002 save file with all the dealership cars and like 10 million cash. I forgot which one though. Probably around issue 20-25.
Yeah I had this on the Xbox loved it
I purchased the Japanese version when it was first released, going as far as buying a modded Japanese Dreamcast so I could also play American games, the game packaging was a duel case like GT2, it came with a very detailed booklet. The challenge I initially had was everything was in Japanese, overtime got used to it.
We need more of creative opportunities like the car factory of this game, not just in racing, generally speaking, each year games come with less support for player content, and I'm not talking about mods, I mean content generated in game for the game. The track editor from Gran Turismo was good, but bland and they let the idea die too easily
I got Sega GT 2002 but somehow doesn't want to work well on a component cable. It seems to start, has sound but no picture. Similar problem with PS1 games on PS2 on component, tries to start but fails.
Having jsrf soundtrack for most of 2002 section threw me off haha OH BUT THAT 02 menu soundtrack near the end ☺️☺️
I played Sega GT on PC when it came out. It was real good, I thought, and the graphics on PC were really good for the time.
WOW, that's a throwback trick 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 the discontinued clone of Gran Turismo 2-5, and especially Juiced era, R-Tuned era, Ridge Racer Portable, Colin McRae Rally era and so on.
I started with Sega GT, then moved on to GT2, I still have both the game and the dreamcast working
I love learning about racing generation
I had Sega GT on XBOX bundled wit Jet Set Radio Future lol
Sega GT was ahead of it's time! It even featured DRS before the F1 did 🤣
Sega gt 2002 and online was so fun
Sega GT on the Dreamcast was and still is my favorite racing game ever created. I can't tell you how many hours I put into Sega GT! Oh and the VMU games I made millions in the VMU games lol. All of 9th grade was spent playing Sega GT lol.
Sega GT 2002 I had really high hopes for, but it definitely didn't hold a candle to the original.
Speed Ring 2002 is literal Talladega
i miss grinding for those unicorn cars online back in the day
Hey, this time I have played this one! I still have my save file from 2000 on the VMU.
17:33 you mean Adrian Newey? Horner didn't design cars.
My friend made me a copy of Sega gt for my dreamcast. I was stoked. I thought it was Sega Super Gt (Scud Racer). Lol. But it was a Gran Turismo clone.
Nice. Looks like fun!
I wasn't aware that Sega GT was a Gran Turismo clone and not another arcade racer. Would be cool to see a coverage of Metropolis Street Racing, leading up to the Project Gotham Racing series. Unless something similar in the likes already exists...
Im just saying grand turismo background music is good but sega gt 2002 menu noise and background music is so fire!!!!
A pretty cool video and all, but I think you forgot to include Sega Rally Championship 😐
Cool, they look pretty fun.
I bought both but haven't played them yet. Nice to see they'll be worth it.
Such a shame that no one could really rival Gran Turismo though. They really hit it out of the park - until recently anyway 😆
If you want the original to handle better, go for drift handling.
I find the standard controls are like trying to steer a speeding tank on ice, but in drift handling mode, with a well timed break at the corners if plays like a dream.
Of course I am biased toward arcade racers with their drift mechanics over any simulation type racer.
I am recording gameplays of old games but upscaled in 8k. Will deffinetly include Sega GT 2002 & JSRF to the list of walkthrough long play videos I will record 😍But will start with Gran Turismo 1 first 😎
Anyone remember in Sega GT 2002 where the Caterham Super Seven was ultra busted for this game??
What emulator do you use for Sega GT?
Flycast
Thanks ,And for SEGA GT 2002?
I've exclusively used music by Sega games in this one, good luck identifying them. (Yes, Atlus included)
I love the fact that you used music from JSRF during the Sega GT 2002 segment 😭😭
Carozzeria just means bodywork. It often refers to the body workshop or the car itself. That's it. It's literally pronounced the same way in my language, Polish.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 is My Favorite 💯🙂
Sega gt was amazing!! If you had a wheel it was much better than using the controller.
The handling model was actually very good. Not many people understood how it works or how to drive. And you can over tune your car.
a good game, the competition with the PS2 and GT3 was too high
I have a huge bunch of raceing games. Never thought id be watching a video where i dont own them.
Sega GT/Rally/Daytona/Crazy Taxi, Outrun/Scud, arcade street game. Daytona 3 I'm Like A Dragon ok. Durability & sponsors wow. No drag/oval footage? Love car builder. Garage/Gymkhana. Used parts wow. An selling that way fair, but not prizes hmm. Still cool. Chronicle as a classic history mode nice.
Some of these videos are always telling me, 'You've Never Played This' and 'You've Never Played That'. Why does it have to be about games that I never played?! If I don't wanna play them, I don't have to! And i don't care if they force me to play these games that I never played! Do they REALLY have to force this 'You've Never Played' thing on me?!?! I DON'T WANNA PLAY THEM! And one more thing, I don't care if it says that I still haven't played that game!
underrated ig
Don't forget its greatest advantage over Gran Turismo: it was available for the PC as well. Even though it was a pretty terrible conversion...
I got Sega GT 2002 with my Original Xbox.
It went up against GT3 on the PS2.
Got all 3 games 😉☑️
Segas glory days
would love Sega and Xbox to bring this IP back. shame they didn't
Nintendo did not made a gran turismo clone
They tried with mario motors for nintendo ds, but they cancelledthe game because they were afraid of possible lawsuits, because the game used to have the nds mic
While there's no a Nintendo GT... There's a GT1 clone for N64 called World driver championship.. Does happen to look quite great for the console that its running from.
Does Sega GT 2002 have car creation aswell?
No that got removed
@@DoVe_7 Of course it got removed, they have better idea but the exectution is totally messed up. Dustin Eden already covered the issue of Sega GT and he dont like the car creation because it barely useful and handling is worse than factory cars.
They tried, and tried until Sega GT Online in 2003. Maybe they saw GT4 on the horizon and said its better to quit now :)
Most people who own this only own it because they wanted Jet Set Radio Future
I've bad memoeries from Sega GT in DC. IMO it totally underdelivered.
Hidden gems? Where's Daytona USA 2? 😭
no sega rally?
Dont forget full auto
Not even sega Rally ?
Sega GT is the definition when you make a game that doesnt work properly like TRX Drift series did. I dont bother playing that game because as soon as I played it, I noticed the physics are BROKEN MESS, cars are just jiggling up and down like they just having intercourse with the road surfaces while handling on all cars are just same, no real effect at all. Engine placement and car physics is even messier than NFS games back then.
Sega 2002 is making a comeback with lots of overhaul and they actually make a better game compared to Sega GT. But, like apple fall from the tree, handling is not completely balanced at all due older cars like Fiat Tipo should have Tank Slapper handling and old Muscle cars should drive like a boat instead of proper sport cars.
I know this is Arcade game, but that doesnt mean they should not overlook the game physics like how NFS High Stakes or Porsche Unleashed at least have better physics than this game.
What?! You're from Bosnia and Herzegovina?
yes
the only thing that sucks in Sega GT is the track design
What happened to good racing arcades? There are no more good titles like PGR4, Toca Race Driver 3, R: Racing Evolution, Forza 4 itself and even some with different mechanics like Beetle Adventure Racing and Cruis’n. All have lost their essence.
NiC3 ViÐ30
The driving in the original sega gt was terrible compared to similar game on the dreamcast like f355 and lemans 24 hour.
The major downside of Sega GT was the appaling handling.
Why do u assume i have never played them
Sega GT2 is in my opinion better than Gran Turismo
I fully agree. There's some kind of magic that Sega GT 2002 has. Gran Turismo 3 was decent but I always wanted to play this more.
this dude missed the 3rd game????????????????
Umm, you've spelt Games wrong. It's not G E M S, it's G A M .... Oh! Gems. I'm sorry! Yes, these games are gems, great gems in gaming, indeed!
GT is boring crap, plus not on PC. Sega GT was on PC and was much less boring. I liked.
In my opinion Sega GT was a way better game than Gran Turismo
