TXR Drift 2 is burned into my PCSX2. Its a weird and suprisingly challenging game. The car selection is huge and unique but some drift races are unbeatable since you only get one try and some time trials need multiple attempts and a fully dialed car to beat. Drift trials are hard since the cars slide is hard to control and the touges are narrow. The game also suprisees with dirt patches or bad weather. Also the game gives you millions of Yen but stuff also costs alot, worth thinking about before sinking all the money in a new car. I still have a fully dialed CRX in my garage since its light and nimble :) Sadly many bigger japanese cars feel caged on the tiny touge streets, a blend between touge- and highway races would be the best :)

The reason being most of the co-founder behind the GRP started out as the crew behind Ikaten which was what influenced Shigeno jumping ship from shakotan to hashiriya drift culture. Someone already said this, but TXRD2 is the 3rd game in the series. The second game, Kaido Battle 2: Chain Reaction (or in PAL, Kaido Racer 1) wasn't released for the US. Genki mostly take inspiration from the real life public road racing scene, even including a documentary in TXR Zero, anime references are still around but they're not a major factor.
The "Devil Z" also didn't show up in TXR3, just saying this one since some people see mistakes like that and writes off the video entirely; wish you good luck and if you're continuing to cover more Genki games (a tad more research into them would be appreciated).

i've been saying this for years. We haven't had a car list quite like this franchise, only thing that came close was GT6. C33 Laurel, kei cars like Altos, Moves, etc. CB radio antennas (not a car but omg i love them), ae86 2doors, AE92 levin, etc. I make fictional touges from scratch as a hobby for a game, I'd love to see the genre make a return, since the "90s golden era" of Japanese drifting is once again on the rise in popularity, this'd be the perfect time for a game studio to cash in, use those obscure cars, some rare rural touges, with the gift of retrospective and the ability to see what made the past games great.

My main gripe with the game is the vague progression requirements and some opponents having conditions that I have no clue what they even are. I checked a walkthrough for one and it still ended up being wrong. Never properly beaten the game because of that. Seem to be Rival 320. I met all of the conditions, had the doll for the stormy weather on a 4th week's Sunday night aaaand nothing. Left and re-entered the PA and nothing. I have never seen this guy appear. The game's still great, but wish it didn't have such specific demands for progression rivals, especially when those requirements don't even seem to work always.
Anyway, Drift 2 is still probably the best racing game in the TXR franchise. TXR Zero has a ridiculous level of speed but it can get a little repetitive, and one of the wanderer requirements can become impossible if you don't know about it early enough. TXR 3 has probably the best customization in the series, you can genuinely plan up ahead what car you will prioritize on your playthrough so you can unlock engine swaps as early as possible, though the handling model is a bit poor and the international release of the game cannot be completed without a gameshark. TXR 2 has rather great visuals and a very interesting progression system due to how the money is balanced, but it has some absolute Dreamcast jank and design decisions they overlooked that can make it feel like a very amateurish product at times.

    • @K0Y0I_sis
      @K0Y0I_sis Год назад +3

@@cordyzank3625 well that's subjective based on where you're from. The devs intended it to be a "carlife" sim, just like how car enthusiast would partake in the car culture with limited resource well after the japanese economic bubble burst.
Parking is charged according to three classes as the dimensions of your car increase the rates will follow too. To curb the emmision outputs, if you own a car within the 23 Tokyo metropolitan wards, you will get charged double the parking, "Shaken"and insurance if you own more than one car, Your average japanese usually could not survive owning more then one car let alone being forced to revert their car back to street-legal spec every two years for the inspection.
So what many enthusiast would do was to front a storage/warehouse rental somewhere near the circuit itself with their fellow car guy friends and store their parts and track cars( without registration/or registered under the R/"tuned" category if you have the license to run a tuning workshop) there, while themselves dailying some kei/compact car or Creative Movers within the city limits. I think Understanding the implication of this aspect behind the culture will greatly increase the immersion for your playthrough. Because unlike the 90's where the youth didn't realize the grim reality of the state of Japanese economy was in, They kept spending without consideration throughout the 90's, they view car culture as a social activity back then where as in the 2000's the signs of recession has finally set in, the participation of car culture is a luxury itself. marking the decline of JDM car culture.

I discovered this game about 2 years ago when I bought a refurbished ps2 and rummaged through my dad's old ps2 games. Eventually I managed to legally emulate the game and my ps2 and have done a full playthrough. Since then I've bought txr3 and txr0, I beat 3 and realized that about 3 years ago I bought import tuner challenge for the xbox 360 (which is pretty much the same concept as other txr games). The handling is difficult to get used to and kinda bad in literally every genki game, but man do I love em. They filled the wangan midnight sized hole in my heart since the only arcade with it nearby is pretty far away. If you're a jdm fan then you'll pretty much love these games.
Would also like to mention how I completely cheated the cat events by abusing save states, pretty much after every drift zone I would pause the game and make a save state just so that I didn't have to do the event over and over again.
If I had to recommend another genki game it would either be txr0 or txr3, txr3 has better visuals and more maps to choose from, txr3 also has really good visual customization with full carbon bodies, over fenders, bumpers, hoods, side skirts, the whole shabang. txr3 will even let you change headlight and taillight colors along with eyelids too. txr0 is essentially the original txr dreamcast game, but with more cars and different menus.

Genki really pour their thoughts on these games as love letter for those who like the scene especially Wangan and Touge racing are niche genre (on west) compared to something like Underground 1/street race genre that took the shock back in 2003 yet these games (TXR and TXRD) achieve cult status to those into the genre.
What I like from TXR Drift spin off is the possibility to win the game with almost anything as Touge racing is more focusing on balance of the car instead of power tendency of highway racing especially on Wangan route. On these spin off you can beat Supra with Midget kei pickup car as long as you know how to tune them.
Abandoned probably exaggerated since SEGA taking care of IDAS game and these genres never even big (on west?). The hard to swallow pill is there wont be any game like Genki quality for these genre, WMMT and IDAS arent same experience as these console games (not to mention Genki also made WMMT game before Namco took the right).

Ah yes, my favorite racing game of all time. Especially since I’m an Initial D diehard. It’s not perfect, but the things they do good, they do really well. I agree with your few gripes with the game, like the wonky hitboxes, sponsors not being transferable between cars, the AI not being so great, etc. I’m glad this game is getting some love and attention.
Fun Fact: On the JP version you can get the vinyls from the rivals you race (Including Slashers, 13D, K12) and put them on your cars. There’s also real-life part sponsors you can apply along with manufacturers tuning houses like Nismo or Mazdaspeed depending on the car. Furthermore, there’s two extra sets of wheels and an extra car being a Gemballa.

I remember playing it as Kaido Racer II or something like that at least a decade ago, only later to realize it's Tokyo Extreme Racer spin off. But nevertheless, it's such a good game to play, for all of the reasons you mentioned in review. I was heavily invested in Initial D so playing this game was "natural" so to speak. That was an interesting era in PS2 racing genres. You would have this, Racing Battle C1 Gran Prix, Battle Gear series, even Auto Modellista.. it's something I don't see these days. This review brought me back so thank you for that!

For a nerd of racing anime/manga/games and racing in general, this game series is a GOLDMINE. There's not only Initial D and Wangan Midnight references of almost every character from the early seasons: There are also references to real life drivers, racing series, famous events, other manga/anime (shakotan boogie, over rev!, etc), movies, series... A bunch of driver profiles I can tell are also references that I don't get due to being very local Japanese things.
Anyway, the game series is amazing, we need more games like this. There's some indie games floating around, but even the most promising don't seem they'll have this kind of charm. Closest one seems Night Runners which has a demo hopefully coming soon.

I hope they start developing again, now in time we have some new cool cars that are worth making a new one like the lc500, supra a90, 400z, rcf, is350h, gtr, yaris corolla camry gr, century grmn& gt86&gr86, new mark 2, new mx5, mazda 6 and 3 series etc. Would be a nice thought with some improveness of the old titles in a new polished look, would buy immediately

I love the intricacy of their game's system such as your nickname changes over time due to your playstyle, rival personality affecting how they drive or if they want to race you and so on...
Unlike how straight forward Need for Speed and most other racing games are, Genki wants you to "prepare yourself" before meeting a certain opponent. Which in turn makes it feels more like playing a RPG with cars more than a mere racing game.

A few misses in this video, some others may have pointed it out.
Nr 1: Category races and medals, these are absolutely KEY to progressing, you need the medals to get some medalists to race you.
If you do not have enough, that medalist will not appear and your progression is halted, and to get some of these medals, skipping the ones in category races is not optional!
Nr 2: The rival car borrowing system, this semi ties into nr 1, as you there are medal awarding category races that REQUIRES you to use and drive a rival car to complete it.
You cannot enter the race with anything else, some of these are battles, and some of these are drift races, so ideally you should have some rival cars that are usable for both.
