  • For the second episode of Tech Battle we're taking a look at Sega's classic racing game, Sega Rally Championship.
    From it's origins as an arcade game for the powerful Model 2 board, to the mandatory Saturn conversion and other interesting ports, we leave no stone unturned looking for all the tiny (and not so tiny) differences that make each version unique.

    Model 2 was a watershed moment in the industry and M2 games still look beautiful today...
    Model 2 is also probably the biggest or most significant leap in the history of arcades, and video games in general. The jump to 3D was huge but the jump to fully texture mapped polys is really where modern games really began and the base they are built off to this day.

    YES Sega Rally Forever!
    This was a great video, I didn't know of a couple of ports like the PC port or the PS2 Japan exclusive port. I'm also sad that I couldn't buy the SROA on Xbox 360 back when it was available, but managed to play and complete Sega Rally Revo on my Xbox 360, it is without a doubt the hardest Sega Rally out there, not even SRC2 on the Dreamcast is as hard as SRR.

    • @TheSaturnJunkyard
      @TheSaturnJunkyard  6 лет назад

      Thanks. A big part of this series is precisely to bring attention to lesser known ports that most people may not know about. And it is a shame what happened with SROA, but as we mention in the video at least you can emulate the original Sega Rally 3. We can count on the community when the developers themselves don't properly preserve their history

    I think it is simply more often repeated misinformation that Model 2 had Texture Filtering. It had very high resolution and color textures, but no filtering like bi-tri-linear or Mip Mapping. If Model 2 had filtering they could have simply applied it to the mesh transparencies and nobody would have known it was a mesh. I clearly remember seeing Doom like pixels on road textures in Daytona USA in the Arcades as well. Take a look on System16.com and notice what is missing from the Model 2 list of features.

      @@DarkPhalanax Appreciate it! There are more expensive wheels with stronger force feedback, so if you can afford it you might want to go for a higher spec wheel, but otherwise this is as good as you'll get, cheaper wheels will have very weak force feedback (or none at all) which ruins the experience

    My favourite version is the Saturn version, mainly for the amazing CD soundtrack and because it finally showed that the Saturn could handle Model 2 racer ports.

      Thank you for your support, we really appreciate it, but as a general rule we'll try to avoid covering the same games as them (Panzer Dragoon was an exception for the simple fact that we we're already working on it when their episode came out). We''ll probably do a sort of spin-off along the lines of "Tech Battle mini" with shorter videos for games that have fewer ports, so who knows, maybe we'll talk about about Daytona in one of those

    You can't unlock the "Stratos" on arcade versions, this cheat actually just increases the "Boost Pressure" simulated for your car. The car clearly still acts like a 4WD car, which the Stratos is a RWD car and handles very differently in real and in the Saturn version
    To do this cheat you only need to do the gear shifts at the car selection too, you do not need to touch the brake at all. (You must move the gear stick out of 1st gear before you begin this too. Dont leave it in 1st and think that will count, you must put it into 1st on the car screen)

    • @TheSaturnJunkyard
      @TheSaturnJunkyard  3 года назад +1

      Spot on. I actually wrote a companion article for this video where I correct that mistake thesaturnjunkyard.blogspot.com/2018/05/tech-battle-episode-2-sega-rally_4.html
      "We talk about an unlockable "secret car" but for the original arcade version this was simply an alternative handling mode for the regular cars. Later on the Saturn port actually added a new car to fit this handling model, the now iconic Lancia Stratos, so many gamers started to retconn the original and refer to that alternative handling as being the Stratos. It is true that the development team stated in interviews that it was their idea to include that 3rd car, which was then cut for time constraints, and the only trace of its existence is that extra handling mode, but back then regular arcade goers didn't know about that."

  • @toweleeielite
    @toweleeielite Год назад

    the arcade board DOESNT have an extra car, its just turbo mode, giving the cars more torque and a different leaderboard. home ports had the 'extra' car which is a stratos and looks like a stratos...... and uses the same leadernoard as the celica and delta. turbo mode can also be enabled on home ports which gives a new leaderboard and is available to all 3 cars........
