- The world of competitive Super Smash Brothers Melee is high stakes and cutthroat. There are heroes, villains, and even gods, and everyone is competing to make a name for themselves. 60 Frames follows three players, a newcomer (Kenji), a rising challenger (Squid), and a master (HuGs), each looking to climb the ranks and solidify their place in the halls of melee history. The path is hard though, and the competition is fierce. When the game is on the line, your focus narrows, and the world vanishes, leaving only you, your opponent, and the game. The sounds become sharper, the visuals become brighter, and awareness is heightened. It's not just strategy and cognition that wins games, it's the ability to flow in high level situations. In this movie we look at what it takes to succeed in high level competition, and what it feels like to experience the glory of victory and the sting of defeat.

alhex123 neutral start is both players agreeing to run to other side of stage and wait a few seconds before match starts since characters wont always start in fair positions. hugs is infamous for trying to do one with everyone he plays
also to note neutral starts are in no way dictated by rules and people can and often do just refuse
at G4 they were rule enforced, but only by port decision

I love the perspective coming from the relative unknowns who are new to the game to the grizzled vets. We've been so focused on the Gods that we haven't spared a glance at the People.

I feel like this doc was kind of awkward at the start, but as it went on, it became very professional and fun to watch.
I think the opening statement doesn't set up the best vibe, I don't think anybody can talk to everybody, there is a reason a documentary was made to create exposure. Followed with "Not everyone can be good at this game" is a rough statement to start with. Melee is a game that requires incredible amounts of both dedication and skill, but with players like M2K, the dream is that you can lab and put your time in and have a chance at being amazing. And that pursuit in itself, is core to melee. Just seems like a weird way to start out *shrugs*
An interesting look at the different perspectives you'll see in a tournament setting. I thought it was shot really well and by the end I wanted more. There's some technical stuff that could be better, but all in all I enjoyed it alot.

I feel like 60 frames would've been a better title for a documentary about the the road to frame tight executions and optimizations of characters to TAS levels. Instead we got a doc about player mentalities.

Amazing. A very unique smash documentary in the way it doesn't focus on just top players, really cool!
It's crazy to see how much people have improved at the game since the early days. Hugs was top 10 in the world for sure around 2006, but 10 years later there are so many good players it's hard to hold that spot.
Terrific documentary! I love how deep the information and detail goes into each subject and the players have a great personality and always have something interesting to say for each question and situation. Very unique. Great edits. Amazing effort.

Great doc man. Watching Kenji made me feel super uncomfortable, but Hugs and Squid were great. This documentary really highlighted the ruthlessness and subtle aggression of competitive smash in a way that The Smash Brothers did not. Again, good job.
Constructive feedback attempt:
- There were moments of complete silence in which a calm instrumental song would fit better
- The typefaces chosen for this kind of media were pretty bad too. It was even hard to read the text at times (like the floating text showing players tag+rank)
- The slow-mo sequence before HugsvsN0ne last stock generated too much expactation and ended up leading to an anticlimactic ending.
But overall you guys did a great job showing another side of the Smash Community that hasn't been covered in other docs. Congrats :)
This was actually a really interesting view of three different skill levels.
Watching this definitely made me motivated to keep playing, even during the saltiest of times. Really inspirational stuff as a (causal) smash bro. And Hugs is awesome ^o^

If you're not interested in reading criticism, stop now. Graphics sucked. Audio editing wasn't very good for the most part, very abrupt cuts, sometimes nothing tying clips together. Audio sometimes got too loud or was too quiet as well. The integration of the weird angled gameplay was pretty bad especially when there was no audio in the background to link things together. Establishing shots, b-roll, interviews, and face cams were all very decent. Cinematography in general was pretty good. The interviews were very very good, by far the best part of the entire doc. My recommendation is to focus more on simplicity. Perhaps you thought adding the visuals would make the doc seem more professional, but in reality it actually hurt the doc more rather than if they weren't included at all. It's weird because I have no idea what you were thinking when you included these visuals because they look like they were made in MS paint, have the most obnoxious color scheme and are on the whole unnecessary. Seeing as the doc is pretty clearly not marketed towards a general audience in the majority of it's content, incorporating explanations for concepts that smash community already knows about is just pointless and feels like an imitation of one of the worst parts of the Smash Brothers doc. There a very good doc in there somewhere, but as it stands it's just an okay amateur doc. Hopefully you've learned from some of these mistakes and improve from them. That or just get other people to do the things you're incapable of doing well. Nice to see somebody approaching a topic that hasn't yet been covered, low, mid, and high-mid level players.

MaxiM - Sm4sh might be okay in a vacuum, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum. And if smash 5 adds literally any character and keeps all the rest, hell, if it just has every character that has been in smash before, it's already the bigger roster.
This was really nice to watch. The filming was great.
I'm watching this video in 2019. To see squid saying he is top 108 in the world and to see how he improved and where he is now, it's great to see his effort pay out

this was pretty amazing, I loved the how it shows the mindset of beginner, mid/upper mid-level, and veteran players perspectives of the game, and how it affects their lives in general. also it was spot on in showcasing the types of people you would see in a tourney, and how overall approachable, and accepting the smash communuty is.

Having gone to SSS 42, and planning on going to as many as possible in the coming future, and meeting Squid and HuGs, I love this documentary. Absolutely amazingly made. Good luck in your future games Kenji. Hope to one day face you all.

This documental felt like something that grew on me very quickly, like Melee itself. It was amazing to watch and made me think!

CP Adagio Every movie you've ever watched was probably in 30 FPS. Real-time video simply looks strange in 60. It's obviously standard for gameplay, but when someone tries to create a documentary, it only makes sense that they make it in 30. It's just an industry standard more than anything.

The whole point of the documentary was to see look into the life of a newcomer (Kenji), an upcoming top player (squid), and a well known top player (hugs) and I thought the documentary fulfilled that purpose. Not sure why everyone is bashing it it's not a bad documentary whatsoever..
DraconisMarchVII Its pretty great story and character wise, its simply the editing that needs work.
This video seem very professional, good camera angles, a lot of additional in melee angled game play in live tourneys, and getting people's perspective, this video turned out awesome

+Kaiju Kamacuras Repetitive? Repetitive?! In Sm4sh, all 50+ characters are viable, while I can only see Foxes, Sheiks, Marths, Peaches, Falcos, Falcons, Ice Climbers and at most Luigis. No characters else. I am not bashing on Melee, but Melee players need to accept that Sm4sh is also technical with other techs like Bidou.

Thoroughly enjoyed the melee re-enactment scenes, felt they gave a lot to the pace and scripting.

melee really is a showing that true talent cannot make you win. dedication and the will to keep wanting to get better is the key to winning, and that key is universal

One thing I would have liked to see more is players explaining what makes a top player different than a good player. Why the Five Gods have been so dominant and how Leffen managed to close the gap when no one else could.
