alhex123 neutral start is both players agreeing to run to other side of stage and wait a few seconds before match starts since characters wont always start in fair positions. hugs is infamous for trying to do one with everyone he plays also to note neutral starts are in no way dictated by rules and people can and often do just refuse
9:02, brodie on the left is poppin some concentration mints for game 1 of the set. 9:07, HuGs becomes self conscious and does a breath check. idk why but that fuckin killed me
I love the perspective coming from the relative unknowns who are new to the game to the grizzled vets. We've been so focused on the Gods that we haven't spared a glance at the People.
I feel like 60 frames would've been a better title for a documentary about the the road to frame tight executions and optimizations of characters to TAS levels. Instead we got a doc about player mentalities.
An interesting look at the different perspectives you'll see in a tournament setting. I thought it was shot really well and by the end I wanted more. There's some technical stuff that could be better, but all in all I enjoyed it alot.
I think the opening statement doesn't set up the best vibe, I don't think anybody can talk to everybody, there is a reason a documentary was made to create exposure. Followed with "Not everyone can be good at this game" is a rough statement to start with. Melee is a game that requires incredible amounts of both dedication and skill, but with players like M2K, the dream is that you can lab and put your time in and have a chance at being amazing. And that pursuit in itself, is core to melee. Just seems like a weird way to start out *shrugs*
Great doc man. Watching Kenji made me feel super uncomfortable, but Hugs and Squid were great. This documentary really highlighted the ruthlessness and subtle aggression of competitive smash in a way that The Smash Brothers did not. Again, good job.
Terrific documentary! I love how deep the information and detail goes into each subject and the players have a great personality and always have something interesting to say for each question and situation. Very unique. Great edits. Amazing effort. Long live Smash Bros.
It's crazy to see how much people have improved at the game since the early days. Hugs was top 10 in the world for sure around 2006, but 10 years later there are so many good players it's hard to hold that spot.
Watching this definitely made me motivated to keep playing, even during the saltiest of times. Really inspirational stuff as a (causal) smash bro. And Hugs is awesome ^o^
I'm watching this video in 2019. To see squid saying he is top 108 in the world and to see how he improved and where he is now, it's great to see his effort pay out
Having gone to SSS 42, and planning on going to as many as possible in the coming future, and meeting Squid and HuGs, I love this documentary. Absolutely amazingly made. Good luck in your future games Kenji. Hope to one day face you all.
this was pretty amazing, I loved the how it shows the mindset of beginner, mid/upper mid-level, and veteran players perspectives of the game, and how it affects their lives in general. also it was spot on in showcasing the types of people you would see in a tourney, and how overall approachable, and accepting the smash communuty is.
Im from the UK and would like to thank you for your hard work. Enjoyed the doc and am proud to call myself a smasher coz of peaple like you and those in the doc. Respek.
This video seem very professional, good camera angles, a lot of additional in melee angled game play in live tourneys, and getting people's perspective, this video turned out awesome
Constructive feedback attempt: - There were moments of complete silence in which a calm instrumental song would fit better - The typefaces chosen for this kind of media were pretty bad too. It was even hard to read the text at times (like the floating text showing players tag+rank) - The slow-mo sequence before HugsvsN0ne last stock generated too much expactation and ended up leading to an anticlimactic ending. But overall you guys did a great job showing another side of the Smash Community that hasn't been covered in other docs. Congrats :)
I have 3 comments that could cause some upset 1. good doco but kinda short 2.great explaining the bracket and all that because when i first watched smash i had no idea 3. squids roommate cans can't be real
The whole point of the documentary was to see look into the life of a newcomer (Kenji), an upcoming top player (squid), and a well known top player (hugs) and I thought the documentary fulfilled that purpose. Not sure why everyone is bashing it it's not a bad documentary whatsoever..
It's crazy to me how, when this video came out, I didn't know who most of the people in this video were. 2 years later and I get chills when I see familiar faces :D
This is a great start, assuming there will be more. Thoroughly enjoyed the melee re-enactment scenes, felt they gave a lot to the pace and scripting. Keep up the great stuff, stuff to improve on but all in all fantastic!
melee really is a showing that true talent cannot make you win. dedication and the will to keep wanting to get better is the key to winning, and that key is universal
I really like the fact that it focused on the human and psychological aspect of competitive melee instead of the game itself. The documentary is far from perfect (especially graphics and audio edit) but I give you huge props for showing that well how it feels to play competitive melee Also shoutouts to the people in the comments who never got any female friend and think that if you do you necessarily got friendzoned lmao
This is actually pretty fucking good ^^ I'd prefer a more in-depth type of doc now that we have this and the smash brothers doc, but I can see how this type of thing helps to get new people in and I still enjoy it gudshit m8s
One thing I would have liked to see more is players explaining what makes a top player different than a good player. Why the Five Gods have been so dominant and how Leffen managed to close the gap when no one else could.
+0blalb0 Difference is, Sm4sh is actually really good, and had more succes then brawl already, also it will be inpossible for a smash 5 to top sm4sh roster
MaxiM - Sm4sh might be okay in a vacuum, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum. And if smash 5 adds literally any character and keeps all the rest, hell, if it just has every character that has been in smash before, it's already the bigger roster.
Phantom hits are my favorite advanced technique.
Lmao
+8888 Really gotta master those TANGENT LINES
It's all a mind game. Imagine someone intentionally getting 5 phantoms in a row on you. I'd be bricking it
+8888 It's the 20XX rest punish.
+8888 Phantom rests are the best tbh.
of course hugs first game you see him sitting down for he asks for a neutral start before you hear any other words from him
Lol
+erty3125 LOL
what does that mean?
alhex123 neutral start is both players agreeing to run to other side of stage and wait a few seconds before match starts since characters wont always start in fair positions. hugs is infamous for trying to do one with everyone he plays
also to note neutral starts are in no way dictated by rules and people can and often do just refuse
at G4 they were rule enforced, but only by port decision
9:02, brodie on the left is poppin some concentration mints for game 1 of the set.
9:07, HuGs becomes self conscious and does a breath check.
idk why but that fuckin killed me
+Huey P lol I noticed that too
+Huey P Haha yeah! xD It's really funny. ^^
The real mindgames start way before the set
ive never seen hugo hit so many charge shots
Dude you're everywhere on every video I watch
+CP Adagio I know right. He's on more videos than not.
LOL
I love the perspective coming from the relative unknowns who are new to the game to the grizzled vets. We've been so focused on the Gods that we haven't spared a glance at the People.
westballz looking like a male nurse
When does he not?
And now Squid is ranked above HugS! Crazy!
Thank you undertale man, very cool
aren’t you....?
By a long shot
This is amazing.
Great work!
Hey omni the smash news God
+James Gorman omni deserves to be lynched
+Pepper Can't stop laughing.XD By the way, nothing against you Omni.
+Pepper get a life
+James Gorman already got one buddy
Fantastic short film. This has to be added to the list of "Must-watches" of Smash community.
What else is on the list?
Austin Johnson The Smash Bros Documentary, Wombo Combo, and How fast is Melee is what I can think of at the moment.
Couldn´t have phrased it better!
musical melee now
+don't-feed-ben all I want to say is the smash pros mockumentary
I feel like 60 frames would've been a better title for a documentary about the the road to frame tight executions and optimizations of characters to TAS levels. Instead we got a doc about player mentalities.
Just finished the whole thing. I especially loved the intro.
All 3 players seem like amazing people!
Long live melee.
"roommate"
+the metapod "friendzone"
+Coach McGuirk squid only cares about melee omg he has no time for women esp. not scrubby peach mains like michelle
I love the little ways you chose to pay homage to the doc, the music choices, the intro, all of it. amazing.
It's kinda funny this wasn't uploaded with 60 fps, but whyyyy
+applesgosh hey look it's the game grumps highlight person!
Movies in 60 fps just look weird.
Taylor Bryan What.
+Taylor “Fluid” Bryan free pizza slices
Feet per second
An interesting look at the different perspectives you'll see in a tournament setting. I thought it was shot really well and by the end I wanted more. There's some technical stuff that could be better, but all in all I enjoyed it alot.
if chocolate cows dont exist, explain chocolate milk.
I feel like this doc was kind of awkward at the start, but as it went on, it became very professional and fun to watch.
I think the opening statement doesn't set up the best vibe, I don't think anybody can talk to everybody, there is a reason a documentary was made to create exposure. Followed with "Not everyone can be good at this game" is a rough statement to start with. Squid's roommate is the thing i like most in melee
Amazing. A very unique smash documentary in the way it doesn't focus on just top players, really cool!
Great doc man. Watching Kenji made me feel super uncomfortable, but Hugs and Squid were great. This documentary really highlighted the ruthlessness and subtle aggression of competitive smash in a way that The Smash Brothers did not. Again, good job.
Superb Smashing Brothers? Nonono, it's Extraordinary Excessive Pressure Fraternal Figures.
Terrific documentary! I love how deep the information and detail goes into each subject and the players have a great personality and always have something interesting to say for each question and situation. Very unique. Great edits. Amazing effort.
Long live Smash Bros.

I'm watching this video in 2019. To see squid saying he is top 108 in the world and to see how he improved and where he is now, it's great to see his effort pay out
This was actually a really interesting view of three different skill levels.
Having gone to SSS 42, and planning on going to as many as possible in the coming future, and meeting Squid and HuGs, I love this documentary. Absolutely amazingly made. Good luck in your future games Kenji. Hope to one day face you all.
This is honestly so well filmed and shot and seems to flow very well. Good job!
squid's roommate tho
billygowhoop "roommate"
They sure do like to smash
this was pretty amazing, I loved the how it shows the mindset of beginner, mid/upper mid-level, and veteran players perspectives of the game, and how it affects their lives in general. also it was spot on in showcasing the types of people you would see in a tourney, and how overall approachable, and accepting the smash communuty is.
This is really a great vid. Every smasher should watch this
Im from the UK and would like to thank you for your hard work. Enjoyed the doc and am proud to call myself a smasher coz of peaple like you and those in the doc. Respek.

"It's a fruit, a fruit tree!" "TOMATO" lol!!!
Whoa, once it ended, the whole thing seemed so short. Excellent work!
This was amazing. Makes me remember why I love melee.
Fantastic, the different perspectives really makes this stand out from the rest
Kinda like a short Smash Bros Documentary which is needed because that one is 4 hours long but worth the watch. Nice video.
Wzrd it's split up into 8 or 9 episodes do you don't have to watch it in one sitting
Love the documentary and the music you chose, those savant tracks were on point with the video, nicely done mate.
I have 3 comments that could cause some upset
1. good doco but kinda short
2.great explaining the bracket and all that because when i first watched smash i had no idea
3. squids roommate cans can't be real
Glad to see another Top Quality Smash Doc! Also really liked the use of infographics!
Great doc! Really tastefully made. More people need to know about this!
When do we get the doc about Squid's roommate?
She fine
@ssbm_cakes on instagram man
the fucking plug, im crying
they smash *literally*
DXLTA thanks you a real one
This was really nice to watch. The filming was great.
Digging the Savant. Really well put together all around; I enjoyed it
This documental felt like something that grew on me very quickly, like Melee itself. It was amazing to watch and made me think!
Also squid's roommate has the best pair of straight up wrecking balls
A-Tastic HYEZ! ._.
+A-Tastic our boi
SQUID FRIENDZONED!!!
This Documentary is AWESOME!!!!
Great work, it's nice to see the livelihood of the melee community so close to home
squid's roommate : I see no one who is as dedicated as him.
M2K : I see
I would love to see more content like this from you. I loved 60 frames.
Only thing I wish was different was that briiiiight red background. Everything else about this is on point. Excellently done :)
Anyone else 100% disagree with the first line in this? I think Kenji needs to rethink his lifestyle
This started out interesting but by the end I couldn't tell if the video was supposed to have any sort of point.
the first documentary was good, but it inspired a lot of bad documentaries lol
+Jason Fencer wtf? this is by no means bad. haha
+EverythingSmashing This is by no means great either.
The whole point of the documentary was to see look into the life of a newcomer (Kenji), an upcoming top player (squid), and a well known top player (hugs) and I thought the documentary fulfilled that purpose. Not sure why everyone is bashing it it's not a bad documentary whatsoever..
DraconisMarchVII Its pretty great story and character wise, its simply the editing that needs work.
It's crazy to me how, when this video came out, I didn't know who most of the people in this video were. 2 years later and I get chills when I see familiar faces :D
niiiice job man. I liked the close up shots in-game
100,000 views congratulations awesome video
This is a great start, assuming there will be more.
Thoroughly enjoyed the melee re-enactment scenes, felt they gave a lot to the pace and scripting.
Keep up the great stuff, stuff to improve on but all in all fantastic!
Nice video I always love these documentary videos that the community makes. so good
I see you love Savant. Good choice of music, great job with the video. c:
A much needed smash doc while we wait for Metagame. Good job.
My favorite part is how Hugs wasn’t making any faces when it wasn’t focused on him but when it was he was moving his head and stuff
Great job with this doc.
"do something constructive"
*trigger intensifies"
god damn Squid's roommate made sure she was dressed nice for this
melee really is a showing that true talent cannot make you win. dedication and the will to keep wanting to get better is the key to winning, and that key is universal
Talent is a big part of it. But I agree
Holy fuck Squid's "roommate." To live with her in the friendzone...fuck.
+Khang Nguyen Ikr. She's got one rockin' bod.
Her: let's fuck
Squid: can't playing melee
Her teeth really bother me tho
Jake Smith who's looking at her teeth?
+Khang Nguyen any time I see someone talk about the friendzone, I cringe a little bit harder inside.
I really like the fact that it focused on the human and psychological aspect of competitive melee instead of the game itself. The documentary is far from perfect (especially graphics and audio edit) but I give you huge props for showing that well how it feels to play competitive melee
Also shoutouts to the people in the comments who never got any female friend and think that if you do you necessarily got friendzoned lmao
Turned out great man! :)
Hope to see more in the future!
The virgin documentary
Wish it was longer! Good stuff!!!!!
27:20 - 27:23
When she tells you she's pregnant but you think she's joking so you laugh... but you realize she actually telling the truth
+Blite Hispasian Oh my god yes
Blite Hispasian d
Let's talk about the elephant in the room:
Did Hugs get new teeth?
Nice use of "Basement" by Savant in the beginning :) Love this song!
26:11 The struggle of trying to tell someone you're from Yorba Linda.
squid with the ultimate friendzone
Am I the only one who when HuGs was listing the only reasons he would stop playing melee that he would say the game dies or he dies?
This is actually pretty fucking good ^^ I'd prefer a more in-depth type of doc now that we have this and the smash brothers doc, but I can see how this type of thing helps to get new people in and I still enjoy it
gudshit m8s
Solid vid. You better be doing more in the future!
One thing I would have liked to see more is players explaining what makes a top player different than a good player. Why the Five Gods have been so dominant and how Leffen managed to close the gap when no one else could.
Michelle = 😍😍😍
this was really well done.
60 frames. Uploaded in 30 fps. lol
Good documentary though. Wish it was a bit longer.
Yo is my man Squid friendzoned? Took one for the team ♥
love the Savant music choices
Hugo's teeth look so much nicer in this
Love it. I'll never stop playing melee either.
Squid's friend is built nicely
+666XX "friend" Biblethump
Oh god yes...that body is a solid 8
+Estevan Hernandez (Toilet Snakes) I'm pretty sure that her boyfriend, Krame Pie iirc
+Drif blim nah I'm just a thirsty dude
+Kramer McEleney I'm actually dying at this LMAO
7th time watching. Such a sick documentary!!!!
I laughed so hard when lucky slapped that ass at 6:50
lol that aint lucky
makes me so happy to be in socal
lol your lucky Danny Tanner. I love Vegas to death but when I get the chance I'm probably gonna move to a stronger region when I get older
Loving the Savant music. But talking about a pretty nerdy video game to Savants "basement" is pretty meta.
such an inspiring documentary. hopefully one day i can make a documentary as good as this
great production, good work.
squid is smashin that rommmate chick like it was melee lol
Lmao she has a boyfriend so no he isn't
+lay low Alex19
I feel sad for people thinking sm4sh will live as long as Melee already has.
+Glace077 Don't doubt it. I think a lot of people would have said the same about Melee when it was first starting out.
+Rawr1752 sm4sh will probably die out when the next smash game comes out, unless it's garbage
+Glace077 melee is timeless. unfortunately sm4sh will just be replaced with the next game. just like brawl was.
I want to be jeremy. I want that roomade.
Oh god
Same.
she has a well bust nit bad tho
the friendzone is real
half of you guys posting "I wanna fug her" shouldn't be surprised why you don't have a roommate like her.
+Chugga Chugga Choo Choo cool bud 👍
I think I want to have squid's roomate...
I laughed when HugS said, "Neutral Start?"
If anyone is here from Hugs stream you should know that McPhellin pays for the rent.
