Eh, I don't like to put it so bluntly but you guys will grow out of this "The person I like, doesn't like me and it literally KILLS MY SOUL" mentality when you're older, or after you've had a few relationships.
Some people might find the melancholy tone in this episode off putting, but this is my favorite in the series. I find Isai interesting, and it's by far the most unique episode in the series. Brilliant job! Wonderful editing!

I've watched both Ken and Chillindude's commentary on the documentary and they both pretty much confirmed the Isai worship in this video. For example Ken told a story about how Isai showed him Shield Dropping going "you see? you see?" and Ken was like "what the hell, that's not useful" Basically Isai was always ahead of everyone else in tech skills at the time. Chillindude was watching his matches saying something like "noone played like that back then, he played like he's in 2010+" Crazy shit.
That final fight with Ken and Isai... The way they described it, the way the circumstances change, and Isai just becomes a beast. I get chills watching this.
why not? He might be touched by his story. And maybe that playlist is for someone else, or maybe he is not 100% deaf, or maybe he just wants to collect specific songs with his favorite lyrics.
I think I understand completely why Isai never tried in singles. When you're _that_ good at a game, if you go all out like Isai would when taunted or in clutch situations, nobody wants to play with you. It's not fun to play against, similar to what Wife was saying. I imagine Isai never tried because he didn't want to push people away, especially when it came to Smash, his like true passion. And considering the almost complete lack of social skills, it's not easy to counterbalance being amazing at a game with jokes and usual extrovert camaraderie. It's just frustrating for the other player, and they leave. So he throws the match, so they are enticed to keep playing. TL;DR: So he's not further isolating himself by simply having fun with potential friends.
NOTE: THIS IS MY OPINION ON WHY ISAI NEVER TRIED - Isai did not need the victory, and for that reason, he had no desire to fight for it. Isai is an interesting person, and you can see that. In my opinion, Isai had a rough childhood. I might not know it, but from how closed off he is, I believe he did, as that is a symptom of being a child of divorce. (My parents are divorced as well) This, in my opinion, also explains Isai's love for 64. Smash 64 isn't as much about the mind games and competitiveness, it's about the fun, the comboes. The biggest smash 64 event is the combo contest, a fun, wild event, not a competitive tournament where everyone is tryharding.. And maybe, just maybe, buried deep within his love of the game is the nostalgia smash 64 gives him when he plays it. That game was released when he was 13 or 14, so it's completely possible. But back to his NEVER TRYING in melee. I simply don't think that Isai is into competition in terms of building a legacy and ego. Maybe he has slight autism, which makes you have different priorities, but if it is that, I truly believe it's from extremely high intellect and being bred differently in terms of his emotions. It's very likely that as a kid, he learned to prioritize his relationships over his ego and himself, because of the loneliness he felt with his parents distance. I suffer through things similar to this. My parents were divorced, and I became so afraid of being alone, that I quite literally do not care about competition at all, or about my image. I simply want to be around others and for them to like me. And so for that reason, I think Isai did not care about melee competitions because what he truly wanted was to be a part of the community, and becoming the best player in that community was not what he needed. He didn't need the fame or power, he simply wanted the relationships that came from travelling to tournaments, and to fill the void that had been built all his life. Sure, you could say that Isai let the people win because he didn't want them to be sad, and maybe so he could still hang with them, but I truly believe that it's much deeper. I hope that Isai is doing well right now, and that he has learned how to escape from the fear of rejection or being left alone, because in my opinion, it is the single thing that lead to his sand bagging and indifference to competition and putting in his all.
The fact that this documentary has been not only a great way to show the competitiveness of Smash, but also shows the community and it's emotional aspects have blown me away. This is definitely the best documentary I have ever seen. This episode is my favorite.
Something about Isai's part about daydreaming and longing for friends is almost beautiful: it's so innocent and humble, you wouldn't really think it could come from a person of his skill. On the one hand, I think it's kind of difficult to not be sympathetic and sort of feel bad, but at the same time, he was able to step back from himself (deciding to retire from melee eventually, even though most others disagreed) and just sort of stick with what he did enjoy, because of his independence. It really is quite inspiring yet kind of stabbing at the same time.
+ffdp419 I totally agree with you. I think this mindset he has... ... it's just so representative of what such an innocent guy feels like in this world that's so not innocent. It's why those anime screenshots were cycling through. I think people like him can see what they want in these fictional worlds and places, but tragically that all is not attainable here... How he says he uses his imagination to imagine things... ... It's all pure people like him can really do. Yes, very emotional indeed.
I like to imagine that some day, Isai and Ken will bump into each other at a tournament (probably Apex) and start reminiscing about when they were teammates. Then Ken challenges him to a match of Melee and being in such a good mood, Isai agrees but only if they go somewhere private. So they play in an empty room and Isai 4 stocks him. Ken knew this was coming and simply laughs it off, shakes his hand and the two go their separate ways once again.
TurbinationE Yeah, but now theres an entire new wave of 12 year olds (for both star wars and dragon ball) because of the recent releases of new movies/series... I don't like it.
WHY DID THIS MAKE ME FEEL SO MUCH FEELS? I sincerely want to know if it things worked out with Mel and shit that was so heartwarming. Legend deserving of his title, not just because of his skills, but because he's a damn good person. Here's to you Isai.
This was the best episode in my opinion. There is just is just something so admirable about the way Isai plays on a team compared to how he plays singles. I think it shows how loyal and selfless he is, kinda like a guy who would take a bullet for a close comrade in a firefight. Also the way he talks in his interview without being on camera combined with the great video editing is just really thought provoking.
Jaundiced Misanthrope It really is just a matter of opinion. Something can go mainstream, but that doesn't mean you need to go to the mainstream tournaments. You can still go to locals and it will be just like normal.
This is solely due to the nature of the interview with Isai, but I don't believe there is any doubt that this episode is the best episode of the Smash Documentary.
14:50 that was a really deep moment. This man is just speaking how he truly feels and it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful things i have heard in a while.
There’re times-I don’t know why-that I’ll just want to watch this documentary series. But I only want to watch this one. The tone is so calming. And Isai is so interesting to listen to, even though he answers in very few words, sounding like he’s straight from a Miyazaki film or slice-of-life. He’s the reason I main Captain Falcon primarily (I was a Sonic main at the time). His skills, matched only by Ken, put him in a league above LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE, a league he never wanted, the god with VOLUNTARY mortality. He is the people’s choice.
+Clem Lane Well at least it was interesting. If you don't believe it then maybe think of it as wrestling or anime where you know it's fake but still fun to watch
The bit where he sandbags after the crowd cheers him in for Apex 2012. I just can't comprehend what was going through his mind at that time. I feel so awkward even just watching it on video.
At one point, or some point or on other days. Each of those top players years ago can beat one another. Ken can dominate and Isaiah can beat Ken depending on if he tries, etc. It don't matter really. At the end of the day they are all still one of the Best Smashers in history. And then of course there are all the other OP Japanese players in Japan that we don't really know anything about except Captin Jack and some others that could reckt the top American players for fun. But Americans don't really mention that as much. But hey. It is what it is.
Yeah I know, each episode really focuses on one person it seems like mainly and shows them at their prime but really Isai is just too good I think. He just never tried. When he did though he will win. In dubs he was the best cause he just didnt wanna let his teammate lose so he did his best to win. He knocked out some of the East Coasts best by himself pretty much in that FC crew battle. That shit was crazy. Ken dominated singles but if Isai wanted to play Ken wouldnt have won that much in opinion.
He's still almost untouchable in Smash 64 but yeah, I would have loved it if Isai kept playing Melee. You watch footage of Isai's Falcon back in 2005 and it's not that much different to the best Falcon players of today. If Isai had just kept playing the game, he may still be considered the best Melee player.
Him N64 is fucking unfair haha. Hes too good at that. Hes just the best smasher in my eyes. Ken even said it, if he tried he could have been the best. Hes just too good at smash lol.
dear god, the isai narrative is so well woven it near makes me fucking cry, but then it's some fucking anime still and it's just funny as fuck instead.
I wish they could have gotten camera footage. This episode would have been so much better if they didn't have to resort to using a bunch of cheesy-ass stills.
Coming from someone just entering the smash community, this series has been absolutely amazing. It's really awesome seeing where everything got started!
iKillCow4Fun Nah, I don't think so. Isai was an absolute beast back in the day, but now a days even the gods of smash aren't as dominant as they used to be. Im sure Isai wouldn't dominate Leffen as much as you might be thinking, or he might even be in serious danger of losing to Leffen. After Isai propelled the meta game forward, and after better training equipment like the 20XX Hack Pack came out, people are definitely more of a threat to top players now than they have ever been before. Isai would need at LEAST a 6 month grace period to get his sea legs in melee again, and might need to lose in a few tournaments before he could break top 25 again.
I know right? I'd really like to be his friend, he seems like an awesome guy to be close friends with. Such a shame that most people like him are not usually appreciated enough. :(
I think he's appreciated plenty, both in the 64 and melee community, both on a player and personal level. He seems to shy away from people and closeness though. Hard to become friends with people then.
So much love and respect to Isai. I've loved him for years. Even got his autograph on a controller. I relish that controller now. You'll find your Mel one day bro.
WHen he asked about people naturally getting along and being into someone and them just not caring a tear literally came down my face. The feels are real
I remember watching this episode years and years ago and it really striking an emotional chord with where I was. Its a weird kinda sombre nostalgia rewatching it all these years later. This doc is just... a weirdly important part of my life.
We NEED to see the full Melee FC Crew Battle where Isai runs train on them. I also wish they added that he is the greatest N64 smash player of all time.
After losing Winner’s Finals at Smash Con 2023 to Kurabba, Isai won Loser’s Finals 3-0 then 6-0’ed Kurabba in Grand Finals. He went Super Saiyan again!
my favorite episode BY FAR not only bc I'm a captain falcon main too, but it's possible to relate this as human beings mainly, seeing the Smash God with the unbeatable aura act just like any of us mortals, really love Isai and having faith that he gets the kind of life he wants
+noah solomon I was wondering if there was special meaning there... That's interesting to know. I think I understand Isai's feelings. The whole easy life thing and imagining things happening that actually don't... It's quite a way of seeing things. I don''t think it's as uncommon as it appears though.
If you watch slowly, after Match 3 started of their grand finals, Isai just starts reading every single fuckin flick of Ken's joystick. He's literally spent years, day after day, hours upon hours of playing with him, living with him, traveling with him, etc. He finally harnessed all that shit and predicted every fuckin move and surgically picked Ken apart, holy shit. 90% of the moves he did in the last 3 of that set, he does it because he knows what Ken's going to do in response. Damn. Super Saiyan indeed. He was watching Ken in slow motion lmao. This Smash Doc deserves to be nominated for an Oscar seriously though.
Watching all of these for the first time. First of all, this is an amazing series, thank you considerably for documenting all of this. This is absolutely a landmark of a time I remember only being marginally a part of. Incredible.
+Ma Ma Chillen: "I'm back, leffen; but this time, I'm gonna fuck you." Leffen: "Lol cool. Don't you mean fuck me up? dumbass." Chillen: "No, I'm gonna fuck you." Leffen: "oh."
Just an FYI for yall, Isai is still active in the Smash 64 scene. Not as much as he used to be, but he does go to tournaments here and there, most recently getting 4th at Inka fest 2019. He posts occasionally on his youtube channel "Isai Alvarado", and will actually respond to your questions on his videos sometimes. I asked him if he used a modded N64 controller in any capacity and he responded simply with "nope".
Isai is that quiet guy in the frontlines, that don't talk much and doesn't always seem to know what he is doing, but he is the one that finds out how to use the equipment in ways the others wouldn't even dare to think of and ends up revolutionizing the entire battlefield. The quiet savant, to which the path is more important than the victory.
Whoever decided to interview Isai like this, likely the producer, sculpted this episode and arguably the heart of the documentary. It doesn't matter what game it is, they're not just players but they're people, too. Instead of sticking an intimidating camera in Isai's face and pushing him further into his familiar shell, thank you for not being lazy and showing Isai on first impressions ruclips.net/video/qEibecSOTvQ/видео.htmlm36s , but for showing Isai in such a way that he's endearing and yearning to be loved and needed. It makes him, in my opinion, the most like-able of all. I'm disregarding the editing decision of anime pictures in this episode, because it's not important. Edit images of anything you want over this episode for all I care. It is the episodes like this that make this documentary more than SSB, and more enjoyable. The way the players have been befriended help make this documentary what it is.
Isai- the king who didn't want the crown.

Couldn't agree more
I've watched both Ken and Chillindude's commentary on the documentary and they both pretty much confirmed the Isai worship in this video.
For example Ken told a story about how Isai showed him Shield Dropping going "you see? you see?" and Ken was like "what the hell, that's not useful"

yo y u post stuff like dis man makes a nigga all sad and shit
Like hbox talked about how it’s not fun playing with friends and they just don’t enjoy it
NOTE: THIS IS MY OPINION ON WHY ISAI NEVER TRIED -
Isai did not need the victory, and for that reason, he had no desire to fight for it. I simply don't think that Isai is into competition in terms of building a legacy and ego. Maybe he has slight autism, which makes you have different priorities, but if it is that, I truly believe it's from extremely high intellect and being bred differently in terms of his emotions. Isai is honestly the best. If he tried he could have been better than Ken and everyone. Hes just that good but he never tries!! Lol hes my favorite.
I agree on that
This episode especially is way more deep than I though a Smash documentary could be.
dear god, the isai narrative is so well woven it near makes me fucking cry, but then it's some fucking anime still and it's just funny as fuck instead.
I wish they could have gotten camera footage. This episode would have been so much better if they didn't have to resort to using a bunch of cheesy-ass stills.
well its makes alot of sense if yu wave seen that anime
+Brandon Martin (progamer2290) what anime is it
5 centimeter per second
Coming from someone just entering the smash community, this series has been absolutely amazing. It's really awesome seeing where everything got started!
Isai's life seems so tragic, and then I realize all of the tragedy is in the context of video games and I'm not sure what to make of it.
Lol Ikr

@TheLazyCapricorn its been a year what the fuck is "faggy"

The isai interview with the 5centimeters per second screenshots was really well put together
I shed a tear every time I watch this :')
That comeback was so nuts. I was on the edge of my seat.
That ISAI vs Ken finals looks insane.
And that was from 2005, the man was a god before the five gods...
+Neo Godzilla If only we can see Isai vs. Leffen.
that would not even be close
idk man, if we'd get an isai vs leffen smash master at the next SSC it could en up very very close
iKillCow4Fun
Nah, I don't think so.
2023 he won Super Smash Con which was STACKED in an incredible 6-0
ISAI is my goat
insane to watch
That battle between Isai and Ken at the end is amazing.
Watched the whole docuseries but after I finished I had to come back and give this one another watch.. Isai, the GOAT of Smash 🐐
Ken: King of Smash.
Mango, M2K, Hbox, PPMD, Armada: Gods of Smash.
Leffen: God-slayer of Smash.
Isai: Just don't get hit.
This was the most touching thing ever.
TV quality documentary series about Smash Bros. Hats off to you fellows!
Isai begging to make friends, yet I feel like everyone would want to be his friend... Where are you Isai :C
I did not expect to like this but it is awesome I love this series!
So much love and respect to Isai. I've loved him for years. Even got his autograph on a controller. I relish that controller now. You'll find your Mel one day bro.
what if MEL was just for MELEE
#mindblown
Nehh
Or the sound falcon makes when he f-smashes you
That's probably what he told Mel
When this first came out i found the girl it was referencing online on the smash boards and she was dating some other melee player at the time.
WHen he asked about people naturally getting along and being into someone and them just not caring a tear literally came down my face. The feels are real
Seriously another tear! Ill be your friend Isai!
Gets me right in the feels. Incredible story.
The feels for this series... My BibleThumps are real.
Isai in a zombie apocalypse: Don't get bit.
Isai reminds me of Kuroko from Kuroko No Basket. His personality and the fact that he only shows his true potential in teams are really similar.
Jesus christ this guy is the most shy but interesting guy I've ever heard about.
I remember watching this episode years and years ago and it really striking an emotional chord with where I was. Its a weird kinda sombre nostalgia rewatching it all these years later. This doc is just... a weirdly important part of my life.
That song in the intro is basically the best thing ever, especially with the intro
"I'll say, that's the number one response to that fear." that mixup.
We NEED to see the full Melee FC Crew Battle where Isai runs train on them. I also wish they added that he is the greatest N64 smash player of all time.
Didn't think a Smash documentary would have me in tears
And now he just won a stacked supermajor, even obliterating one of the best players in the world with a reverse sweep 6-0.
I come back to rewatch this and I love it more and more each time thanks for the amazing documentary
After losing Winner’s Finals at Smash Con 2023 to Kurabba, Isai won Loser’s Finals 3-0 then 6-0’ed Kurabba in Grand Finals. He went Super Saiyan again!
my favorite episode BY FAR
not only bc I'm a captain falcon main too, but it's possible to relate this as human beings mainly, seeing the Smash God with the unbeatable aura act just like any of us mortals, really love Isai and having faith that he gets the kind of life he wants
Just finished watching 5 centimeters a second (animation all of the Isai backgrounds come from) and this hits soooo much harder now
+noah solomon I was wondering if there was special meaning there... That's interesting to know. I think I understand Isai's feelings. The whole easy life thing and imagining things happening that actually don't... It's quite a way of seeing things. I don''t think it's as uncommon as it appears though.
After finishing the doc, this is the only one I rewatch
This has been in my watch later playlist for years. Now I’m getting chills hearing about isai and Mel. Props to the director and producer
This episode makes it seem like Isai is dead...
Jacob Howell after watching this I had to look him up because I actually thought he was xD
They overdone it a bit with the music at times. At some point, I was expecting "Isai was found dead on his apartment at..." or some shit like that.
He IS dead... On the inside.
Gutwrencher Krahl it doesn't seem
Watching all of these for the first time. First of all, this is an amazing series, thank you considerably for documenting all of this. This is absolutely a landmark of a time I remember only being marginally a part of. Incredible.
Isai is just one of those guys who probably needs a hug every now and then.
20:12 oof, one of the best songs in this whole documentary
The best for me haha
i used to play with this song in background

Just an FYI for yall, Isai is still active in the Smash 64 scene. Not as much as he used to be, but he does go to tournaments here and there, most recently getting 4th at Inka fest 2019. He posts occasionally on his youtube channel "Isai Alvarado", and will actually respond to your questions on his videos sometimes. I asked him if he used a modded N64 controller in any capacity and he responded simply with "nope".
That Isai crew battle part always makes me laugh because I can imagine seeing Isai beating them and everybody's all psycho over it.
14:58 Oh, 5 Centimeters per Second... what a great movie. Fitting for the lines there too! :)
Amazing documentary, such a good watch.
For me this is the best part of the documentary
Isai is that quiet guy in the frontlines, that don't talk much and doesn't always seem to know what he is doing, but he is the one that finds out how to use the equipment in ways the others wouldn't even dare to think of and ends up revolutionizing the entire battlefield.
The quiet savant, to which the path is more important than the victory.
Admiral and Wobbles at 0:23
Would not have recognized them when this first came out.
Oh, how wonderful it is to get into the scene.
At my last tourney, Wobbles grabbed me irl and Wobbled me with Admiral.
Probably the only time I will ever enjoy getting wobbled.
The way the players have been befriended help make this documentary what it is.
some of those combos isai was doing in the last 3 games vs ken would be nice even in 2023. dude coulda been a legend if he wanted it
After watching Isai win Smash con 2023 I had to watch this again :')
Wow this is a really awesome documentary thanks for uploading this!
Watching Isai it's like he had a time machine and was emulating how players would play in the future. Way ahead of his time.
He invented how players play today.
Can't stop watching this episode.
New Jersey tap water is really good. It's pretty weird how good it is.
I loved this episode. I almost feel like tearing up. Idk why.
