  • Now, he will try.
    These are some of the rare moments Isai actually tries to win and goes full Super Saiyan, destroying his opponent in the process.
    Isai, the inventor of the term Don't get hit, was an absolutely amazing and unique player that was extremely far ahead of his time, his Falcon was light years ahead any other Falcon in the game at the time. Unfortunately he rarely tried in Singles causing not many matches of him playing at his full potential to exist. Here, I've compiled matches of him playing at his max potential showcasing just how insane he was. Unfortunately, Isai has quit Melee so these may be the last we see of Isai going full Super Saiyan :(

    "Don't get hit" - Isai

  • @jesusantispray
    @jesusantispray 7 лет назад +1404

    I feel like Isai didn't actually get much enjoyment from winning because he was just such an insanely natural god at this game; perhaps for even deeper personal reasons as well. He knew other people enjoyed winning so he'd let them win cause he didn't want them feeling bad with him absolutely dominating and so instead tried to give them the rush of the win even though they deep down knew he was sandbagging.

    • @ClintonChelak
      @ClintonChelak 7 лет назад +62

      Gavin Rae I don't believe it. Not trying is one person's way of saying he is afraid of actual failure. If he "never tried," I doubt he ever thought he was good enough.

    • @japaroads
      @japaroads 7 лет назад +278

      Nah. Gavin's closer to the mark then you are, man. Isaiah's match against Ken proves that he's capable of putting it all on the line against impossible odds. He came back to do a reverse 3-0 against Ken, the best player in the world at the time. Match 4, in particular, has him coming back against a huge stock deficit. He wasn't afraid. Not at all.

    • @jesusantispray
      @jesusantispray 7 лет назад +176

      Clinton Chelak have you watched the smash documentary man? most of the clips are just copied and pasted from it tbh though GRmash did put in some custom edits as well but what I'm trying to say is you don't seem that familiar with who Isai is..
      Sure you may be kind of right in the fact that not trying makes you a failure but it isn't always that simple..
      Isai was a very quiet and in some cases depressed individual so he may have been second guessing himself... but the matter of the fact is that Isai was indisputably the best player in the world back then when he actually tried, he just didn't have that drive to win unless he was in 2v2's because then he was fighting for a friend and not just himself. Literally every single one of the players that helped form the smash community as it is today testifies that Isai was unbeatable when he actually tired. We wouldn't have competitive smash like we do today if it weren't for him because of all the times he carried Ken or helped Ken practice to get as good as he was.

    • @Ridghost
      @Ridghost 7 лет назад +155

      Also it's very obvious when someone is sandbagging compared to someone who is trying but sucking and making excuses. All these pro-players believe he was sandbagging, when they are in a culture where many pro's do make excuses and "john" a hell of a lot. That's because they know, when someone attempts to waveshine, but fucks up, they were trying. When someone basically suicides every stock, without even caring, that's sandbagging. On top of the fact that it's proven that this guy can go beast mode during a finals, shows that he isn't a choker and he is capable of getting into the "zone" whenever he needs to. The guy is naturally god like at Melee, but he is not a competitor at heart, he is just a gamer. It's no disrespect, but Isai had no competitive spirit for Melee. He does now for 64, but he certainly didn't for Melee.

    • @jesusantispray

      Lea G lololol stupidest thing i have heard , studies have shown for all things at least 40% of people at events the spectators are very un satisfied and leave early . please think before you say stupid things as i was a spectator at one event on westcoast it was horrible it must have been man children who put it together it was the worst set up ever . worse its bad enough that my girlfriend wanted to go in first 20 min because every guy there was virgin or they were just perverts (take your Pick) that acted like they never saw a woman in there life and not just her the few that were at tournament all felt the same. So dont say spectators always win in fact the real percentage and studies for events of all kinds show its the opposite that they lose that more are unsatisfied.

    A year later so this is probably buried, but i need this off my chest. All the people denying the potential of Isai were he to be playing today are basing it off this gameplay exclusively without thinking of time. Were he to consistently actually try and practice as much as the other pros, considering his gameplay over 5 years ago looks like todays meta movement, imagine how much he'd evolve his own playstyle to today. He'd absolutely be a god. After all, like they said, that final match with Ken is what sparked the melee scene to explode into what it is today. Without him Melee would never have gotten as much recognition as today nor would tech have evolved this quickly.

    The Isai segment of the SMASH documentary always gives me chills.
    The music, Isai's speaking parts and all the other Pro's talking about him, especially Wife talking about how he suspects that Isai has always had a certain amount of pain. It show a certain human aspect to it all
    SMASH is a video game; it was played by people who were, at the time, seeking an escape from life
    Video games may have established a place in this materialist world today but they were always an escape from realty
    And i feel that most of the people who play video games can connect with Isai much more than they can Mango or M2K or Armada or any other pro player sheerly because he played for the love of the game
    Not because he wanted to be the best
    Not because he had a point to prove
    But because he enjoyed playing the game, both against people of his own skill level and people who sucked dick at a videogame

Dude could of been the best at something but his mind is rotted by anime and couldn't handle his crush not liking him. He's a cool story, but that's about it. Mangos smash story is more compelling to the layman imo stick with him

    I always wondered why they glossed over the fact he is still considered one of the best 64 players ever. His dominance was way longer than kens in that game. Only Post 2010 did he start losing finals and such. To this day he could walk into a 64 tourney and win the whole thing. No one would be surprised that he won, only that he even showed up lol.

I have so much respect for Isai both as a person and as a player. He doesn't play to win, he plays to have fun. If he wins, that's a bonus. If winning means making other people happy, then he'll make it happen.

    I believe the reason of why Isai is just so good is NOT that he's just naturally good at Melee like everyone says. I believe it's all because 64 mechanics, like the long ass hitstone, bad recoveries, Z-cacelling, and when playing Melee all those dificulties are gone, and I believe that's also a reason of why Wizzrobe' SDI is just unreal

    • @playstationarusu
      @playstationarusu 2 года назад +3

      I don't think it's a matter of the "difficulties" of 64 being absent, I mean Z cancelling is more lenient and rewarding than L cancelling. The games are just really similar, and experience in one will show in the other.

    He was a monster when he did want to win and was truly ahead of his time. His movement was ridiculous and even most modern players aren’t this technical.

You'd also see the rise of new players and see not only the meta game evolve, but the fanbase as well. Salty players and fanbases of different smash games didn't exist yet, it wasn't about the money, just about having a great time with some Melee. It's awesome that there are still records of the tournaments that took place way back then, so I can proudly say: Smash used to be better.

    I love how that level of play would barely get you through pools in a local nowadays. Shit's gotten fancy since then, and I keep wishing I was in the scene when these guys were relevant. It would have been fun to see them in their prime.

      +Illuminati No, he's right. Isai was a god of course but the meta has evolved so much. A lot of the amazing stuff you se here is outdated but still awesome for the time this was happening. Maybe you need to spend more time in the lab.

      @trulsrohk9 7 лет назад +25

      What are you going on about? Isai trying when he was in his prime would annihilate everyone at the vast majority of locals today. You have to understand that yes, his movement and all that was godlike for his time and is kind of standard today. However, what made him amazing, I think, was his neutral and his reads. Both of those in his prime were lightyears beyond that of talented local players today.

      Raúl de la Garza lmao name one thing in this vid that wouldn't be considered solid fundamental play and bnb combos. the meta has absolutely evolved but to the point that one of the best in the world in 05 couldn't make it past pools? that's wayyyy over the top

      It would for sure get you through pools. He's a super smart player with a great combo and neutral game. It's not a coincidence he's still a top player in 64, if he put effort into melee he'd easily be top 100.

    Isai’s movement even in todays scene is so crisp. Like man he’s really good. I miss a lot of the older players. Isai was always one of my faves. Being about 13-14 watching the documentary I really enjoyed learning about him. I remember doing a pretty good drawing in miiverse of him wish I kept it or had a picture of it.

    2:27 this man is a monster. he understood his opponents position at the same time they did, he used their recovery as an attack opportunity, by dodging and setting up the perfect distance to jump into fox's fall and send him flying. this is some next level shit.

    Isai is if you merged Saitama, Rock Lee, and Gohan into one being.
    Simply put, Isai is the God of Melee that never desired a throne for himself. He is so overpowered in terms of skill, reaction, technique, etc. that he can defeat everyone he plays against-even the greatest players such as Ken and Azen are easily dealt with. But he chooses not to because a) he doesn't fight for himself, and b) he believes every player of Melee should have the opportunity to defeat him, and therefore he suppresses his latent potential. However, when someone precious to him is watching him, cheering him on, he brings forth his full power and does all he can to win the match. It is with these qualities that define what was, is, and forever will be the True God of Smash-one who sought glory and accomplishment for the sake of others, and kept his methods simple yet true with his ageless quote that will be passed down for generations to come.
    "Don't get hit."

    Damn, there may be a few things about his style that are outdated now but his movement and neutral look gorgeous. You can tell how brilliant he was. It almost feels like a shame that he wasn't born in the modern era instead. I'm glad we have more falcons carrying on the torch today. I'd hate it if the character ended here.
