"Its A Sandbox Fighting Game" That Man Has Just Spoken The Truth... For A Decade I Have Been Searching For A Word To Describe Melee...That Is It "Sandbox Fighting"
This documentary changed my life. A TL;DR version of the last 4 years of my life have been amazing and involved Melee since I watched this. Reached out online and found people to play with in my small city of Peterborough, eventually began hosting tournaments on my own, and bringing people in the area together to play. It's nice to say that this documentary changed my life for the better, brought people together, created new friends, and in some ways has been a constructive social environment for troubled teens who have involved themselves in the scene here. Thank you so much for the documentary and thank you so much Sakurai.
The smash documentary is one of the best pieces of videogame documentation/series of interviews ever. It's so on point and follows such a good narrative for the time frame that it covers. Would love to see the creators take a crack at another game, but nothing is like melee.
Yeah, this is my 9th run. For me, I don't like documentaries normally. I feel like it is almost always boring. Wait. THIS. ONE. IS. AMAZING. BEST. DOCUMENTARY. EVER.
Coming back for what must be my 10th rewatch. Still hits just as hard as when I watched the first time all those years ago. Just an incredible documentary
Kieran Hannigan Okay, it's my "favorite" documentary. Does that make you feel better? Help you sleep at night? To be fair, this documentary blew my god damn mind because of how competitive this one game can be, and because of this documentary I became a competitive smash player. Before I watched this documentary I have barely picked up a Smash Bros. game. It's life changing, more than any other documentary ever could change someone. Best? Favorite? Who gives a shit. It's good!
I'm not sure why but I find/found a sense of comfort and belonging from this documentary series. As I watched it, I almost felt like I was part of this community even though I had never really been involved. It's a beautiful snapshot in time and I can just feel the passion that went into this documentary and the passion of the players. I'll be here to watch again in the future, I'm sure.
The clip at 6:02 of marth v falco. You can tell its M2K's marth. This is one of my favorite parts of smash in that ones playstyle is so important and recognizable, it gives the game...(idk the right word) soul?
only ever played smash casually with friends have no idea who these people are but at the end when the narrator was talking about Azen and Ken colliding with one another gave me chills really well produced video
Honestly such a beautiful story I remember watching it as a teen. Now I’m 22 going into it with a new perspective and it’s just beautiful. The underground rivalry of Ken and Azen is just so cool. Like just the whole thing of the game being released and there’s no online play so you’ll never no who’s better than you till you actually play. And these guys are the dominant force of their each respective coast. I can tell you one thing if I tried to play this game when it came out I would’ve sucked I learned everything I know from others I’m not creative or smart at all. Smash is just so beautiful and my respect for these guys is a lot they are the goats.
7 greatest players who ruled the world in their own time so crazy how even the people who were only briefly shown in the doc (PPMD, hbox, Armada, etc.) Became the best in the world later on.
Just dropping by to say I'm about to start watching this for the third time as I've just bought my very first Smash game (thanks to this documentary for getting me interested in it). Thats right, I watched this entire doco twice without even playing the game. I watch hundreds of Docs and I love film and I keep coming back to this because its so amazing. You made it a human / history story instead of a video game story and that's why anyone can watch and enjoy this regardless of whether they've played the game or not. I just wanted to say thanks so much for making this. It's one of my faves ever.
It's amazing how Melee became such a massive part of the competitive scene. Its not a game made to be played competitively but people somehow found a way to make it that way. I'm not a competitive player, never have been and never will be, but seeing some of these people play just makes me wonder "how on earth do they get that good"
***** melee is a terribly unbalanced ridiculous game that was designed as a 4 player party game. it is definitely the case that people found a way to make it competitive. There is nothing "more competitive" about melee when compared to brawl. yeah it's more exciting, more fast paced, and arguably more fun, but it is no way "more competitive".
the1janitor Brawl is way more unbalanced than Melee is, I have to disagree with you. While, yes, it is somewhat unbalanced compared to other fighters, Brawl doesn't even compare. They are two different beasts entirely.
the1janitor The most competitive game of the series is the original. Every character can kick ass if they are used properly and well trained. That is competitive, and it's even faster than melee. But I do enjoy more Melee when i'm alone than Smash Bros 64 online on Kaillera.
Watched this series yesterday and today. I have to say the music choices were SO GOOD. Especially during the fight montages, the songs were perfect. Trying to find where I can buy the soundtrack. Oh yeah and the rest of the documentary was really well done, too. I love getting an articulate glimpse into different communities and lifestyles, and this was one of the best I've seen. Really glad I watched it.
This is my second time going through this. I just wanted to give a big thanks for putting this whole thing together. I've never played melee, only the smash games that followed it, but this represents a huge contribution to the smash community as a whole. I can tell that you put a lot of time and effort into this. The production level is absolutely amazing, and you managed to capture that "grassroots" feeling while at the same time as making the whole thing feel incredibly professional. It doesn't matter what smash game you play, we're all part of the same community.
twitch.tv/metagame There’s a new documentary coming out this weekend. He livestreamed the first 3 episodes yesterday. There’s 8 episodes total! www.metagamedoc.com/
I just watched this all the way through for my second time. It makes me nostalgic even though I was never part of the tournament scene. Just such a good documentary. Well-paced, very thorough, and a brilliant look into lives we otherwise wouldn't know about. How long did this take to make?
I found out that my pool captain for shine 2019 was the girl explaining how % works. Pool captain of pool J3, i dont know your name, but this is pretty cool to find out, going back and rewatching the smash doc

OnettBoy :/ I actually haven't seen a smasher NOT support a younger smasher JUST because they're young. CoD sucks, so I explored and found Smash. I decided that I want to play Smash because it looks pretty fun. I didn't want to turn into "them" (actual nubs) so I watched videos on the basics. Then, I later went on to learn Advanced Tech. Mostly Chillin, but still.
