    Iwata saw the competitive potential in Melee, but sakurai didnt.
    I wish Iwata had more influence in Brawl and Smash 4, maybe we would have a better sequel to Melee

    I watched this video about a year and a half ago randomly, then watched the documentary, and started playing melee immediately after that. I'm still not great yet, still haven't been PRed in my region, but Melee is a huge part of my life now and I am so glad I found it. Thanks for making this video and leading me, and probably others too, to this insanely amazing game.

  • @NotaSkeleton
    @NotaSkeleton 8 лет назад +56

    Overall a pretty good video, but the whole segment around 20 minutes in, talking about opinions on what the game is ''supposed'' to be was just poor strawmanning. Representing the opposite opinions with a silly voice is just really low. Also, the counter argument to ''Smash is a casual party game'' shouldn't be ''That's wrong, because StarCraft is a popular esport''. At this point, you could have gone back to the mechanics of the game and pointed out how Smash has a duality of both being a great casual party friendly game, while at the same time featuring unique mechanics that give it enough depth to be satisfying at a competitive level.

  • @blazemkds
    @blazemkds 9 лет назад +23

    Melee mechanics are by far some of the most in depth in gaming history, probably the most in fighting games due to the incredible amount of advanced movement techniques in the game and some stuff being 1 frame dependant (timings of 1/60th of a second) and many more not much lower. Because of all these movement techniques and general "freedom" compared to other fighting games makes for an art form in itself. You can literally identify players through videos without even knowing who it is, just by looking at the flow of the character! I have personally been playing since release and competitively since 2009 and rank top 10 in the UK. Personally for me, melee is the greatest game and even the deepest concept I've experienced in general. Just watch the TAS section of this video, with the fox, that will show you melee is limitless and the speed can go quicker than people can comprehend.

    • @James-pb8xu
      @James-pb8xu 9 лет назад

      I mean, melee is pretty dope ( my fav player is aMSa and lucky), I feel that mvc2 is better. Melee lacks a projectile zoning character in it (fox 's laser ain't good enough for it and Falco can't just shoot all day with power shields present). Characters like cable, sentinel, storm, blackheart, and more really have a "feel the screen with garbage" type of playstyle that is super fun. If. zelda had her din's fire reworked, by consuming more space and less endlag with other changes, I think she would had made the game way more "complete".

    • @blazemkds
      @blazemkds 9 лет назад +1

      Keith Wayne I don't know mvc2 at all at high level, although I loved it casually back in the day. I know mvc2 has depth but nothing is like melee for the simple reason melee is not a traditional fighting game. It has so many more aspects to it than standard fighters. And the mental game here is crazy due to techs, missed techs giving you rolls, all that has to be reacted to extremely quickly in order to punish. As I said I don't know much about mvc2 at high level but I seriously doubt its got more depth than melee simply because it's a traditional fighter. Melee hitboxes are also 3D oh man there's just so much in this amazing game (mental sport rather).

    • @James-pb8xu
      @James-pb8xu 9 лет назад

      Melee isn't a mental sport (it's rather just a sport because of the execution requirement). Just sayin
      Also, mvc2 is a team-based fighting game with assists and stuff and those assists vary not only from character to character, but within the character ITSELF. Ex. Sentinel has 3 completely different assists of his own and changing one up opens up doors to much different game plans. Then, when you factor in team layouts (MSP "magneto storm psyloke in that order), the game is stupidly full of freedom that is on par with melee. But, I prefer mvc2 tho. Melee IS dope (played fox, so much fun), I just prefer "marfvel baby".

    • @blazemkds
      @blazemkds 9 лет назад

      Yeah man fully entitled to your opinion bro! I guess it's both a mental and physical sport then really...mvc2 is definitely an EPIC fighting game but it'll never surpass melee for me, the assists definitely have crazy depth though! Melee just is pure freedom and I would say mvc2 is more developed optinally than melee. Also I can't stand infinites they ruin fighters for me. (fuck ice climbers tho) lool.

    • @James-pb8xu
      @James-pb8xu 9 лет назад

      The thing about infinites though is that they show "hey, this game is a little loose on rules and restrictions! You may find some cool and expressive things in here!" Example: EVERY marvel game, melee (u kno; fox vs link with infinite wave shine), brawl (hey, it still has some freedom with the chars. ICs did some crazy stuff, diddys at the highest level is insane MetaKnight is MetaKnight. If it didn't have tripping, and a balanced MK, along with a fixed D3 and G&W so they didn't invalidate half of the cast along with other fixes; it would of Been pretty good), HnK, some KOF games, CvS2, the list goes on.

    Why does the fighting competitive community refuse to accept Smash as part of it?
    and why nintendo dont help it?

    • @SgtWaffleIron
      @SgtWaffleIron 9 лет назад +33

      ***** I'm not sure that's really the reason. I have many FGC friends and the typical excuse they give me is that it's a "party fighter" and not a real fighting game. Also, it's a game published by Nintendo, which there's a stigma that Nintendo games are for kids.
      As for why Nintendo hasn't supported it: For one, it's Nintendo. And Nintendo does what Nintendo does (which doesn't always make sense). Secondly, the creator Sakurai isn't all that thrilled with how far Melee players have taken the game. That's why Brawl and Smash 4 lack nearly all of the advanced techniques that existed in Melee. Nintendo has started somewhat supporting the competitive scene, but mainly for Smash 4 because they want to sell more copies of the game. Nintendo doesn't make any money off of sold copies of Melee, after all.

      @RockoStarrYou 9 лет назад +31

      Chris Rosenorn Yeah, but everyone knows that's ridiculous, because how something is used is what defines it. In other words, it is a party fighter, but a competitive fighting game as well, much like a bat can be both a sports object or a weapon.
      I couldn't take anyone who refuses to see that seriously.

    • @powerfulgoku
      @powerfulgoku 9 лет назад +5

      Crow The fgc has started to accept the smash community more, but mostly it's that the smash community wants to be separate. People have SUPER elitist attitudes like Jund Arbiter here, and most smash players don't want to play other fighting games. It's much less of the fgc not accepting smash as smash wanting to be separate and special lol.

    Im not saying that Smash or Melee isn't a great game or that it doesn't have a great competitive scene or even that is hasn't lasted the test of time. But you cant give a game the title of "Greatest game ever made" cause there is no definitive "best" or "greatest" for rating a game. People have different preferences.

    I wouldn't say melee is deeper than most other competitive games out there. But its simplicity allows players to focus on what should be the focus, a deeper understanding of the game engine, its mechanics, and the almost unlimited potential stacking it onto other players (psychology play).
    Every competitive game I play requires reading, forcing, positioning, and high tech skill mechanic play. (World of warcraft, sc2, Counter-Strike 1.6/Source, l4d2). I'm glad melee exists because sometimes words exist (like DI) that should really be used in other games, but almost never are.
    "Cancelling" exists in most games accidentally as well, (like edge cancelling) so I hope more players notice and utilize these advantages in other games, cause melee has made me a better player in other games as well.

      I think what it means is that Sakurai considered 1v1s when making the game and in a way tailored to the then nonexistent competitive scene. So there was probably some competitive design to it, just not to the point it has gotten.

    This was a beautiful video. Since I really badly want to become both a sm4sh player and a melee player, this helped me learn more about the game I want to get into more. I've never even played melee, but I want to beat Hungrybox and Leffen and Mang0. Looking at them play, I say to myself, "I wanna be him". Now, I may be overthinking this, but I would flip my sh!t one night if I beat one of them. Same goes for sm4sh. I look at ZeRo and Nairo and say the same thing. I can't stop thinking about it. Good luck in your first tournament. I honestly, a couple of times, wanted to cry during the video. I've always HATED real sports, but this is something I can take pride in. I can say I am/ want to be a competitive smash player. No one can take that from me. I've never played a game series as much as smash. I've never been welcomed with warm arms as much as the smash community. I'm into CSGO. The community throws sh!t at each other for no good reason other than to be sh!tty people. This community, I take pride in and will defend it. May both sm4sh and melee have a long run, or in melee's case, keep the life going for a long time.

    I think the coolest thing about melee (and smash in general) is how there's such a grassroots feel to it still. I really like Dota 2 but it's pretty amazing to be able to play melee and go and actually compete in local tournaments. It makes the "path" to becoming a competitive player feel way more obtainable. Pretty incredible.

      If you really really want to win tournaments and be known as "the guy who wins", then pick another character. But if you really love that character and you are okay with needing to significantly outplay your opponents to win, then go for it. That was me with Dr Mario for a while and I loved it. Do what you want with Melee.

    Interesting concept, but while I liked some of the reasons for this stance, I find that it was way too heavy-handed in trying to downplay Brawl/4 making assumptions that they need to play similar to Melee. I'd rather you stayed away from any comparisons to the sequels since they are all different games and play competitively in their own way. Sure the other games are not as fast, or miss out on specific mechanics in Melee; but trying to say they are not as good because they are different is attempting to say LoL is better than Dota2 or HotS. Its all opinion and the only reason you compare them is to bait others into a pointless argument and generate chatter.
    Video was great when you discussed Melee objectively on its own merit and not as a comparison point. Hope you keep focusing on that point of view instead of comparing the games, way more interesting.

    • @OmnifariousGrey
      @OmnifariousGrey 9 лет назад +1

      I suppose. I guess it just felt the video had those way to obvious moments that he was letting his opinion of Melee control what he was saying more than sticking with less bias facts, but I suppose its bound to happen.
      Eh, pretty sure I'm not well known as a Smash player actually. Dabbled a good deal with Mr.Escalator moreso in Brawl and only doing fringe things in 4. Might be mistaken identity.

    • @Khadeezy

    • @OmnifariousGrey
      @OmnifariousGrey 9 лет назад

      I did watch the video, and thats a decent statement, except he keeps returning to comparisons every chance he gets instead of sticking to that point. Besides, you will find it very hard to find anyone who watches his videos to NOT understand these games honestly. Still way too suspect for my taste.

    • @Bert86
      @Bert86 9 лет назад +1

      Ian Smith brawl and 4 are like checkers to the chess that is melee. Melee is clearly a much better game

    • @OmnifariousGrey
      @OmnifariousGrey 9 лет назад +2

      That's opinion easily, I actually find 4 to be more tactical and strategic because it is slower than Melee, giving you more time for planning and reads. Melee comes down to a lot more muscle memory and execution than 4, but you have less time for strategy in the moment. Ultimately these will always be opinions of course, but I find the analogy to Chess/Checkers to be very off point. You'd be better off saying that Timed Chess would be more like Melee and extending the time period in a competitive match of Chess would be 4. Since the vast number of options and choices exist (technically more in 4 though with customs now).

    Smash 4 has gotten much better as a competitive game as time has gone on. Post Diddy patch and post shield stun patch, the game has grown exponentially in its speed and competitive viability.
    The Apex footage was during the reign of Hoo Ha, when the only real option at that point was learning how to beat Diddy Kong's stupidly simple death combos. This often resulted in very campy playstyle as a result. Now the metagame has Sheik at number 1, requiring everyone to be at a level of speed and efficiency beyond anything necessary during the Diddy Kong Era.
    The past few majors' Top 8 are plenty of examples of how far that game has come in under a year of metagame development.

    • @Pabmyster
      @Pabmyster 9 лет назад +5

      +Tselel I agree. Smash 4 is getting better to both watch and play. I have been enjoying it more and more as I get better, but Melee as a community is just so much more enticing, and the games are different enough to make me want to play both. I don't have the same drive to improve at smash 4 as I do at Melee, because the skill ceiling is only so high, and the community togetherness and grassroots feel just isn't there, especially with the introduction to semi-decent online capabilities.
      That being said, I look forward to where both games are headed.

    Amazing video, never even knew about how awesome the community was. To think I've been smashing since the release of the first one on N64, and could have started on SSBM at age 7, but just never realized how much of a big deal it would become and didn't care for it. I'm 21 now and have played casual Brawl and Sm4sh, only recently wanting to play competitive Melee. Planning on buying the game and seeing how far I can go, although of course it's gonna take a long time to find out. I'm honestly saddened at what I may have missed out on by just ignoring Melee for no real reason all those years ago, but I don't know. Maybe I can make up for lost time somehow.

    I never heard of you before, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I don't play DOTA2, SC2, or LoL. But I came across this video recently and loved it. I also watched the one you put out a few days ago about EVO 2015. I just recently got into the melee scene not too long ago, I never played melee until around 2013. I didn't even know there was a second smash game after the amazing Smash 64. But when MLG picked it up in 05-06 I was amazed, I never played the game before but I loved watching it and couldn't believe how fast the game was (even though at the time the game was played slow compared to now). Of course since I never was into the scene, all I have is my PC, but luckily, because of Dolphin, they made a new version of it that is an exact replica of the original melee. Also, you can play with people all around flawlessly, because of this I have been playing a lot recently and really thinking about going to tournaments just for fun. It's crazy how big a 15 year old game can get...

      Mauricio Gallego PM is one of those games thats a dream come true. Its pretty easy to say its much better than Melee because it essentially has everything that makes melee great AND more. But when a lot of Melee players don't like about it is that there are so many damn matchups. For competitive players, learning 40 matchups fucking sucks. Heck, mastering just the top tier matchups in Melee takes a LOTTTT of time.
      I love PM but its just too much of an investment. Melee meta is so developed that its offers a lot more for a lot less.

      a Balanced doesn't equal a better game. A game with an advancing meta makes a better game competitively. I dont usually say any game is the greatest game ever, and even though melee is my favorite game, I won't go out of my way to say it's the best ever

    • @AFCoulthard
      @AFCoulthard 9 лет назад

      ***** Yea but its just my opinion, my favorite characters that I played on the N64 or whatever weren't very good on melee. So whenever I was playing against my friends who would do tournies and stuff it just felt so stale. Same characters always and you would struggle to win with Link vs Fox, (against a good player you would basically never win that lol).

    • @davjags
      @davjags 9 лет назад +8

      Most of the bad characters in 64 also weren't good in melee (Link, DK, Ness etc)...
      But I understand. For someone who doesn't play the game seriously, character loyalty is one of the biggest factors when playing a 1 on 1 match. You want to play with the character you like outside of smash or the character you played as a kid, but fighting game balance is almost impossible, especially without patching afterwards. I play marth and go to tourneys, and while all the the same characters have the same moves as they always do, different people playing them always results in different matches, and one player might play differently from the other, even with the same character. That's what makes the game so dynamic and so free-flowing. While it is true that fox wins the link matchup, it doesn't mean he can't win ever, and any good player who knows how to properly play their character could win against any player at any time. Tier lists only apply to players of equal skill levels

    • @AFCoulthard
      @AFCoulthard 9 лет назад

      ***** Yea, it is kind of a shame they didn't go in the same direction with the next smash bros games after it. They obviously are slowed down and not as twitch based, I would have preferred them to keep the same 'high speed' fighting and simply make more characters viable. But I don't think that was ever their motive, and the fact that they went the opposite way kinda proved that any serious competitive aspects of the game were basically found, constructed and manipulated/abused by really dedicated players instead of being purposely put in there.

    melee is so much more complex than actual "fighting games" and the FGC is salty as hell about it. does your fighting game include:
    - any notion of physics beyond just having gravity
    - knockback and directional influence
    - physical momentum as a game mechanic
    - multiple ways to move the character (walk, run, dash, moonwalk, wavedash, etc)
    - multiple jump heights
    - fastfalling
    - air dodging
    - many ways to cancel lag, some of which are dependent on the level geometry (l-cancel, jump-cancel, double-jump-cancel, shield drop, edge-cancel, pivot, etc, etc)
    - hitstun, which changes on the fly
    - an actual 2d level instead of a plain old floor and all the gameplay this creates (wall-jump, waveland, edge-cancel, shield-drop, randall, etc)
    - differing weights of characters, which is actually reflected in the game physics, and influences how you have to execute vs different characters
    - combos based on hitting inputs in small frame windows that constantly change due to the weight of the character you're hitting, where your hitbox hit them, how much hitstun they'll have at their current percentage, your momentum and direction of movement, their momentum and direction of movement, whether they shielded your attack, and if so, whether they're baiting a grab or shine out of shield, whether they can crouch-cancel, etc, etc, etc, etc...vs: executing inputs in small frame windows where those frame windows never change.
    - wombo combo
    it's a deeper game. get mad about it.

    Falco/Marth won APEX 2015 though, not Marth. In fact, it was more Falco than Marth more than anything. PPMD only stuck with Marth for the Grand Finals because if he used his Falco to counter Armada's Fox, he feared Armada would pull out his Peach to counterpick, thus eventually losing.

    IMO melee is the second best smash game...
    Why?
    It has the second most imbalanced roster in the Smash series only second to Brawl
    There is around
    2 gods Fox/Falco
    7 "viable" characters
    Marth Shiek Jigglypuff Ice Climbers Pikachu Peach Captain Falcon
    And these are pretty much the only characters your gonna see in tournaments apart from the rare other character.
    Either Fox or Falco appear in every match and Melee Fox is the most broken character in the game and would be the most broken character in the entire series if it weren't for Brawls Meta Knight. Melee even has incomplete characters like Game and Watch. Melee has a pretty amazing competitive scene but I'm going to have to give first place to Smash 4.

Melee is actually very fun and when I made this comment I have never actually played the game. I actually have a lot more respect for the roster as well. Fox and Falco do obviously dominate but it’s not an obvious win like Bayonetta or Meta Knight even if your using a character like Yoshi you still have a chance. This was a very good video that I both enjoyed and was intrigued by. Just one question, haven't there been 3 sequels it seems to me that you are not aware of the N64 version o the game

      Shadow Flux N64 isn't a sequel because it came first.

    I have never, ever played in a Melee tournament before. I fucking love this game and it's competitive scene, and I love watching the pros play just as much as I like watching it. Hell, I think I like watching the gods play more than I like actually playing!

    This was better than I first thought it would be, I might consider having a go at melee now, it looks pretty good.

    HELL YEAH! Baumi what are your thoughts on Sm4sh? Ofc Melee is better, but Sm4sh isn't that bad and is flourishing as well. Also Who's your Melee main?

    Melee wasnt made to be play like this. Nintendo themselves said it. But like its said in the ''smash brother documentary'', it was nice accident.

    After viewing you comparing the both different generations of the series I saw something rather unique in the play style that yes melee gameplays is a more of a style of combos and speed, while Smash 4 seems like a style of reading your opponent out and punish them for mistakes.I do like seeing some team battles there for shits and giggles. I do love to see them at least try something new in the new smash that could be more of a spiritual successor to melee than Brawl was
