      I live on Trinidad and I recently got a pal. However it seems like I'm too excited to see progress with my phal. It just finished blooming and I'm trying a water culture. Any extra tips? The roots look white all the time

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  7 лет назад

      Hi Kathi-Ann! If you're going to grow in water culture, I recommend you watch my video, "What I've learned in more than a year of growing my orchids in water culture", publish date Aug 17, 2017. Some phals do well in water culture, and some don't. I've repotted many of my water culture phals to orchid grade premium moss, and they've been growing really well. Water culture isn't the easiest method to grow in, especially for beginners. Happy growing and feel free to ask questions!

    I'm a teeny obsessed with orchids. I currently have my vandas hanging from a tension rod in front of a window. I wish I could keep them there, but they are evidently perishing. I live in Florida, in an apartment (that looks more like a greenhouse than a human domicile, but I don't care about that). What I care about is that I need a different way to home the vandas, that allows more moisture and more fertilizer. Thank you for your fertilizer recipe. I have been trying to finds one that will work after TWO terrible fertilizer burn incidents. I am going to try your method. This is my question: Could you please show that little wire contraption you have there. I cannot afford to buy them, but I think I could make one if I saw how it was shaped. Thank you for what you are doing. Its very helpful and you're a delight to watch.

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  Год назад

      Hi! I think it's awesome that your apartment looks like a greenhouse! I'm sure it's beautiful! I'm glad that my fertilizer recipe works for you. Since you live in Florida, I believe it will work really well. The wire hook is actually a Christmas ornament hanger. I buy them at Michael's, but it shouldn't be hard to make. It's an S-shaped hook, and the bottom half of the S is doubled in on itself for stability. I have one in my sunroom now, I have a glass hummingbird hanging from it. I'll show it in an upcoming video. Happy growing and thanks for your sweet comment!

    My Vandas grow in my patio in Southern California all year long. They all have the long, thin roots hanging down and thicker roots that grow out of the sides of the baskets. I assure you the thin roots absorb just as much water as the thick ones and turn just as green. I spray them morning and night, more often in the heat of Summer. They also get half day soaks about once a month. Don't discount the importance of the thin roots. They have their purpose, too. I always take the baskets off. It requires a good pair of tin sips, but you can remove it without damaging any roots if you take your time.

    Hello , I would like to ask if your vanda has some barks in the basket and you want to put them in water culture do you have to remove the barks first in the basket before you put in the vase. Pls advise.

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  6 лет назад

      Hi Lelani! This Vanda was not in bark when I bought it, it was bare-rooted as you see in this video. I wouldn't change the media if you have a Vanda in a basket in bark. Removing the bark could damage the roots. For more information on the bare-rooting and orchid and water culture, here's a link to a video that will be helpful: ruclips.net/video/YO30o-G5it8/видео.html

    I bought 2 Vanda in the same glass vase. Come home soak it in a water and it has those foul smell coming from the vase. Like you did I also trim almost all of the thin roots. But I’m too scared to put them back in the vase. Too bad because I wanted to grow them in water culture. How often do you change the water of your Vanda?
    I’m growing some Phalaenopsis in full water culture and they’re doing fantastic.

    Help, need your input! Soaked my Vanda Friday and Saturday ... then fertilized on Sunday and currently have it in 3" of water. I was giving it a good look this morning and I discovered 3 yellow leaves at the bottom of the plant ... and also discovered a spike! I don't know whether to be concerned? What is it telling me (lower the 3" water level on the orchid... or under feeding? What are your thoughts! Anxious!

    • @OrchidWhisperer
      @OrchidWhisperer  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Bobette! It sounds like you're soaking it too long. I only soak mine in water for 24 hours or so...I fill my vase up to right below the little basket that the roots are growing through. (I don't soak the tip of the base of the plant.) Then I fertilize it when I drain the vase. You can just spray the roots with fertilizer or place 3 or 4 inches of the fertilizer into the vase. Let them soak in the fertilizer for about 30 minutes and drain the fertilizer out of the vase. The days that it doesn't get a soak, I just spray the roots with water until they're green. I wouldn't put the 3 inches of water back in the bottom of the vase...that might be why your leaves are turning yellow as well. Keep me posted and congratulations on the spike! :) Have a great day my friend! :)

    What I do with my Vandas is use the big glass vase like you do, but I sit the Vanda inside a nice round wooden basket, that sits in the top of the vase. It looks nice, and there's no need for the metal hooks. It also makes watering much easier, since you only have to lift up the basket. I got the baskets from Orchidmate, if you'd like to take a look. Your orchids are so beautiful!

      Here is a picture of my Vanda. Don't mind the dirty looking leaves though. I just treated all of the plants for spider mites. Another thing I did was put spanish moss down into the basket, to keep the humidity around the roots that are high up in the basket. 1drv.ms/i/s!AhdCRwJAk6f7jRuzL2idEH88rO7N
