Frequently Asked Questions:
😇 How old are you? 23
📝 What are you studying? I am set to start my masters in English Literature at Oxford University this autumn. Last year, I finished my English Literature degree at Exeter and am currently on a gap year.
📚What are your favourite books? • 200 book recommendatio...
📚 Do you have a book club? Yes! You can join it here for free: fable.co/club/...
📝 Have you written a book? My life goal is to be a published author and make a living from writing and I am using this year to gain experience, build up a portfolio and work on a book with my agent. I have just finished the final draft of that book, as you can see in this video. I did self-publish a book about bullying when I was seventeen which is available on Amazon (amzn.to/3mdJKLm), but I'm slightly embarrassed by it now!
🎃 Do you have merch? I don't have merch in the traditional sense (I can't imagine selling something with my face or name on haha!), but I do have a stationery company where I sell planners for students. These are all designed with students in mind and follow models which I've used when planning my studying. Our products are printed in pastel colours on recycled paper: bit.ly/3wgsR85
🍵 What's your favourite tea? That's a REALLY hard one, but I think I'd have to say the B&B Chocolate Digestive Tea: bird-and-blend.... (affiliate link)
That's so cool! Welcome to the community!🎉
As a trained bookbinder myself, I have some tips for you:
- try putting the glue on the end paper instead of on the book block and the covers
- glue the gauze only to the back of the block at first. Only paste the rest of it down when glueing on the boards
- when covering the boards, put the glue on the cloth (works best with a big brush or a paint roller)
- try not glueing on the spine of the cover to create a hollow back - most casebound books have one and it will be much easier to open the book. If you don't like that you can look into the spine, you can use the endpaper paper instead of masking tape to make it look prettier.
Have fun experimenting!
I screenshotted this for future reference. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge!
what is the guaze for?
@@mollyoxy the gauze along with the endpapers connects the book block and the cover. It is especially important when doing a hollow back, to connect the spine to the cover. When not using a pre-bound book block, it also helps with stabilizing the glue binding.
I’m getting lost on this but I want to understand 😭 do you have a good video for us visual learners showing the process?
300 likes thx for info!
Hahaha the transition between "I love books" and *aggressively rips cover of a favourite book* was startling
I love bookbinding!!! I had lots of scrapbook paper so found out how to make notebooks. Now I've got an Etsy. I work in a school and I'm making story books for our yearly production 😁
Your videos are so aesthetic and amazing. The editing is so beautiful and your personality really flourishes through it. ❤
I love bookbinding so much! I was introduced to it by my dad
Wow i don’t remember making this comment lol but people actually liked it haha
Hey, this might be weird but do you mind telling me how you measure the space between the book boards? In every video I’ve ever watched, there is an space between the front and middle piece of book boards, also between back and middle one.
I would like to start rebinding my books but don’t know where to start
Hello Ruby! I love your videos and I find myself becoming more and more inspired by you every day!!!
They taught us how to bind books in art foundation class so that we could make our own sketch books, any size we liked. It a skill I treasure to this day, not something I thought I would get out of art school but truely a privledge to be have this skill!
You are an inspiration! It looks beautiful
Please, protect the whole stack of original pages with something like nylon sheets before applying glue to place the endpages.
Thank you for the tip! :) x
Every Bookbinder has that box that hides all the first attempts and learning books. I made the horrendous mistakes of learning on my good books and ruined them, after 32 years of binding I still haven't got around to fixing them...Happy Binding...
I never new you have to buy all cardboards for binding we just use old files especially box files cover it's cheap and more sturdy and use binding cloths in middle for more sturdiness 😅😅😅
It looks soo professional!
U have no idea how much I love u and wish I was one of ur family cause u the most person that inspires me in the whole world ❤
I love books 📚 as well as magazines
Wow ! ❤️ this takes some skill and patience!
I think you did a great job and should be super proud of yourself 🤗
I would love to try this , but would be scared to mess it all up. I will add this to my bucket list of things to try though 👍🏼
I love how she’s actually had a good attempt and included the not so good parts too 👏🏼
Excellent first go.
You did great! Well done.
love your videos ruby ❤
In my days, we used to bind books by using clothes, cardboards and threads
I wanna try book binding too! Hopefully I get to, after stumbling upon a How-to video on RUclips
It looks stunning Ruby
Welcome!
Miss Reads Girl 📚 👌👌
Great work Ruby! 👏 Please tell us how you printed the gold lettering on the spine. Or did you write using a gold-ink pen?
FUN!
Amazing ❤❤❤
I would definitely mess this up
Bravo
What materials woukd you recomend? Where do we find them? Thanks

Hey, What did u use for decorating the book spine?
Explain how to do the foil stamp please
Interesting!
Why do they always skip the gold foil part?
So so cool, Ruby. What about a custom print and binding of your favorite Emily Dickinson poems? Limited edition of 50 by Ruby. I'll buy one...
Beloved
Why does Ruby look so untidy

Sorry for my ignorance. what's that?
Does anyone recognise the company the custom bookboards came from?
yoo😮😮 i seriously need you in my life🥺🥺...you are awesome
I am surprised you didn't up-cycled something from your kitchen for the book covers You can use cardboard from food packaging.
Book binding is so hard! Wait until you try and do the threading of the pages…
I mean to try it but it’s so daunting haha!
I did it with my first one (in the gluing phase now). I cannot even count the amount of times I stabbed myself with the needle XD
Thanks boss

My bookbinder soul is crying... this is NOT how you do it xD
Oh dear! I know it’s nowhere near good, but I’m keen to learn so I’d appreciate any feedback? Or maybe any videos or websites which you’d recommend? I was following an online tutorial but don’t know enough to know if it’s a good one!
@@RubyGranger8 DAS bookbinding is incredible and very informative, or for something more friendly for beginners, I recommend SeaLemon’s tutorials on hardcover bookbinding!
also! for the endpaper and book board, it’s good to use ‘short grain’ paper, where the grain direction runs parallel with the spine. this helps to prevent warping when glue is applied. (not sure if that makes sense but i’m sure other people can explain it better than i can)
@@RubyGranger8 Would also recommend DAS bookbinding! The Nerdforge also has some videos where she binds a book!
I mean... first attempts are always... not so good :D so keep going!
(I honestly wish it was still a reliable job tho...just throwing my thoughts in randomly)
Thats a little harsh 😂
❤👏
Good result:)
