Live Reaction to my First ESSAY MARK at UNIVERSITY (I cried...)

  • I wanted to show you my honest reaction to receiving this grade and I hope that it can be helpful / relatable if you are currently facing failure on some level. As you could see, when I first saw the mark, my first thought was that I had wasted my time but THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS WASTED TIME because all of our experiences and shortcomings help us to learn and grow into the person we were always supposed to be... I would like to stress also that, as ever, grades are relative: what is good for one person is bad for another and vice versa. Try not to compare yourself when you receive a grade back because we are all different and this is SO IMPORTANT to recognise!
    Also, even though I really wasn't happy with this first grade, I received another essay back a few days later and was over the moon with the mark. We all have good and bad days; we're all human; and there is nothing wrong with being wrong or a little bit vulnerable sometimes x

      Yes I do, in fact I think most people do. This is excessive and concerning , trust me I know. I've exhibited the same behaviour and have been told by my therapist that it's not normal and that it's most likely a result of you pressuring yourself into being the absolute best all the time or a result of pressure and high expectations from your parents. Plus saying she's overreacting or that this isn't healthy isn't ''hating on her'' , it's stating the truth in a non-insulting way.

      @@elvenmaiden7027 Pushing yourself into being the absolute best all the time isn't really a bad thing. I'm not so sure about this being "not normal" because it is, it really is. If you don't feel this way, aren't you basically half-assing what you do. I've had my own taste of failures and I felt the same disappointment and regret. You see these reactions in Olympics and even Esports when they only win 2nd place or get kicked off so early in a competition for God's sake. What in the world does your therapist mean by saying it's "not normal". I honestly don't even give in to most of what therapists say... You don't have to worship every word of it.

    • @elvenmaiden7027
      @elvenmaiden7027 5 лет назад +132

      I'm not saying that people shouldn't put in effort , i'm saying that you shouldn't let work/school define the person you are because then a simple failure will lead to these kinds of breakdowns and you feeling like you're nothing despite all your work. She's a very smart , very hardworking and kind girl , but she's putting all her eggs into one basket and it's not going to end well for her. I honestly don't agree with most things therapists say/do either , but I've found that it's a very common thing among ambitious people and that once they realise life doesn't have to be a scoreboard , that they start enjoying themselves more and worrying less.

Congratulations, that’s correct.’ Honestly the school system is SO WACK and society needs to change! We don’t know what alternatives are out there because we’re only forming one singular line every morning and not experiencing the REAL WORLD. In fact humans probably have no idea what the REAL WORLD is because we always have to form a one-to-one structure that makes humans look robotic.

    Ruby. The lesson here is not “don’t take chances” it’s, “learn how to structure arguments better. If you never take chances, you’ll NEVER be able to grow and develop as a person. University/College is a place to TAKE CHANCES. So do it, it’s normal to FAIL. Just make sure you are taking the feedback and becoming a better person.
    Remember, failure is inevitable, make sure you know how to grow from there.

      I agree. I think there is no such thing as taking chances with an argument in an essay. You have a point, all you need to do is learn how to word that. "Taking a chance" in an essay is just the same as saying "the lecturer might dismiss my own personal opinion on a text"

    • @xxymgxx
      @xxymgxx 5 лет назад +4

      I think people get wrapped up with "getting a certain grade". Go to lectures, do the work, give the essay title some independent thought and formulate your own opinion. The key is to have CONFIDENCE in yourself, learning to argue your point clearly will be a skill you will develop along the way!

    Hey! I'm a third-year English lit and creative writing student and trust me when I say that your first essay in first year is ALWAYS going to be one of the lowest essays in your university career. When you’re writing your first essay you are just plunging in without much idea of how you're meant to write and what is expected of your essay. Trust me when I say that essay grades always become better with hard work and determination, and soon you'll be getting 2:1s and 1sts without too much of a struggle. A 2:2 is still a good grade compared to what a lot of other people would have gotten for their first essay. A 2:2 will also be brought up in your general average by the end of term/year by your better grades. Just keep working hard and don't let this get you down!

      Could you explain how does this grade system work? I'm not from UK and I had had only 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 scale (6 is the highest mark) and now in uni 2,3,4,5 (5 is the highest)

    • @nicolae1631
      @nicolae1631 5 лет назад +2

      Jessie Maisie Dont worry - we've all been there! After a summer away from university, going into second year from the first feels like a bigger academic jump than going from sixth form/college to university. I personally felt that I had completely forgotten how to even write essays. The thing is, first year may not ”count” but it does prove to you that you are capable of working hard and getting rewarded for it, and in that respect second year will treat you the exact same! Naturally as you go through uni it may become harder and harder to get really good grades (and people love to tell you that), but what they don't tell you is that you naturally get better and better academically without even realising! If you don't believe me, just take a look back at essays you wrote 2 years ago - you can see the mistakes and how they don't compare at all to something you'd write now. You will naturally get better at essays and all this worry will be for nothing. Everyone gets this worry and everyone proves themselves wrong so don't worry about it - just work hard, do all the reading (yes all of it haha) and have confidence in yourself. If you weren't ”good enough” to survive uni then you wouldn't have gotten in! You've got this!!! If you ever want to talk about this more, message me on Instagram at @nicolaever I'm always up for helping out or reading through someone’s work to ease stress! Xx

    • @nicolae1631
      @nicolae1631 5 лет назад +19

      Dominika Koglin ok so I have noooo idea about the numbering system you have but the way that English universities tend to do it is with the grades: fail, 3rd, 2:2, 2:1 and first (going up in calibre in that order). The grade boundaries might be considered low in comparison to other university systems in other countries (a first which is the equal to an A* is rewarded at 70/100 marks, so 70%), however it is expected that marks are harder to get than in other countries. So you're awarded a first at 70%, a 2:1 at 60%, a 2:2 at 50% (all considered reputable marks). Your university is going to worry however I you consistently dip below those marks into the territory of getting a 3rd (40%) or a fail (30% or below). Sorry if any of this info is wrong, as an English student I'm really not good with numbers haha. I think it tends to be as well that a first is considered an A*, a 2:1 is considered a high B/A, a 2:2 is considered a B/C, a third is considered a D and anything below that is a fail....that might be wrong but that's the gist that I've gotten! :)

    • @joanehutchington5547
      @joanehutchington5547 5 лет назад +6

    As a third year university student, my advice is that you need to realise that high school is not the same standard as university, you cannot rely on your academic success in high school to dictate your success in university, as hard as that may sound because I know you're a hard worker, many of my friends have gone through what you are currently experiencing, they were top of their class in high school and now averaging at 60%-70%. And there's nothing wrong with that, because life cannot remain easy, how else will you grow and mature? but you cannot let this hold you back from adapting and continuing to bettering yourself at university! Once you get a hang of the system your marks will flourish again. I'm an A average student at university so I understand its disheartening but crying won't fix the mark, just do much better on the next essay to counter the lower mark, I have a few Bs/ Cs here and there but I make sure to come back stronger on the next test / assignment x

    It’s so true what you said in the end, and your reaction is so recognisable. I did not get particularly good grades in my first year at uni but I went from an average of 6.8 in my first year, to an average of 7.5 so far in my second year. Seeing yourself grow is one of the most rewarding things in my opinion. I think students often measure their success by looking at their grades, but we should never forget to consider how much we have learned, and the pleasure that can be found in expending your knowledge.

    Girl a 2:2 is great for a first essay!! Don't you worry, I have no doubts that you'll get a 2:1 or a first by the end of your degree. I was still getting used to the university way of writing up until the second half of second year. That's why third year is such a high percentage of your grade - they expect you to not be "used" to university writing yet. It's not more difficult, but it's different and definitely takes time to get used to. You'll get used to it soon, don't doubt yourself!

    University is the perfect place to test the ground - a 2:2 is still fantastic grade for a first essay and if you went into uni getting 2:1s and Firsts straight away it would mean you weren't learning things! Good luck with the rest of your essays, but I want to emphasize that a 2:2 really isn't a bad grade! I felt this on such another level. I’m coming to the end of my first year at uni and I had an injury which put me out for a whole term... I had my dance assessment that I worked so so hard to prepare despite my injury and I failed and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t upset I was really sad and I did cry too. Honestly I don't know the American grading system in universities, but here in Europe (Sweden). Getting a B is veeeeery good. I go to 11th grade (in a so called Gymnasium) and our grading system is A, B, C, D, E and F (F is when you don't pass). We also can get a: - instead of a letter if we miss the test or the essay etc. Getting an A in everything is basically impossible and if you for example still manage to get A's on 95% of the essays and tests in a course then your end grade of that course would still be B, because there's something (could be one essay with a lower grade) that pulled the whole end grade down).

    I didn't even submit my first few essays because I was so scared I am doing something wrong and embarass myself. But practice and good feedback really helps. Also, every professor or lecturer has a different perspective on things so you never know. Some are quite unconventional and encourage students in taking new approaches and doing things differently than it is used to. But others are just hardcore old-school profs who want to see what they have seen for the last fifty years and nothing else. I would even say that grades are the least important things in university. It is what you learn for yourself and how you grow and how you implement old knowledge into something new. Good luck Ruby and everybody.

    honey let me tell you something. don't expect to see the grades you're used to at school in college. It's not your fault really. That's how college is. You need to realize that you're doing the best you can, whatever comes after is out of your hand. I was like you in my first college years, but I realized grade don't matter as much as the knowledge and the experience and somethings just happen and it's fine.

Plus, I think if you'd got the top mark for your first essay, it would have maybe shown that uni didn't have much to teach you... I am just worried that the professor marking it didn't realise / appreciate the gamble you were taking.

    You've used your first semester well. Definitely not a waste of time. You'll benefit in the Long run taking a chance cos you'll have a better idea of what your lecturers are looking for. Also, most people just learn what they need to pass whereas you take more time to actually understand the materials meaning you will benefit way more than people who study selectively just to get the grade they need.

A Uni essay is so so different to A Level and not doing so well really helps you improve and learn what you enjoy writing and what your strong points and weaknesses are! I came out with a 2:1 from a Russell Group Uni and got a few 2:2s in First Year! First Year is the opportunity to try things out, experiment in your writing and make mistakes, that’s what it’s there for! You’re doing great, Ruby! ☺️❤️
