Its pretty incredible how the entire game is always just "there" for the most part, all of those locations being directly connected rather then different world-spaces. Amazing to be able to see it all from a different perspective with all the clutter unloaded though.
This is a very old video, but it just goes to how connected and well thought out the entire world of Dark Souls is. The map is not segmented or broken with teleports, except for where teleports belong, and it is put together in a way so that it could actually exist (with certain fantasy concepts). I just love how much time and effort was put into the world of Dark Souls.
Probably the greatest achievement in gaming history as far as I’m concerned. This game not only holds weight, but helped create a tidal wave that changed the industry. My favorite game of all time and thank you to the community for being so great.
I like how I could tell exactly what everything was even though it's just grey textures. You can clearly see the paths you take and can spot the little spots where certain items are. Also it's all so interconnected. DaS1 truly had the best world design. You can argue mechanics/PvE/PvP sure but world design it's the best of the series hands down. Weird though, you can kind of think of Lordan as Mt. Olympus from Greek mythology and either Lost Izalith or the Tomb of Giants as Hades. Or maybe the Tomb of Giants is Hades and Lost Izalith is Tarterus?
Yes, exactly, although Anor Londo is more like Mount Olympus. Everything in between is the human world. But I agree that Lost Izalith/Demon Ruins would be Tartarus and Tomb of the Giants/Catacombs is Hades.
Great work on the video. I really liked the directed approach. Nice choice in music as well. I'd label this video as World Design 101 for all game world developers.
I was really impressed with that aspect of dark souls. Every time I reached a new area I’d try to figure out what where I was in relation to everything else. Wandered to the end of tomb of giants kind of early, looked down at all the lava and realized shit, the second bell is down there isn’t it. I like ds2 but I have no idea wth I am most of the time.
why is dark soul 2's collison mapping so broken in comparison? you think with more money and staff they could have replicated the quality's of dark souls 1
Are you referring to it not being continuous and seamlessly connected like this? My guess would be that they took a more divided approach to world design in order to get more areas done and make the game "bigger" in terms of the amount of content. It's a bit of a disappointment, though I still think Dark Souls II is a great game.
Orayn Dark Souls 2's world design was just logically flawed. I mean, you take the elevator from the windmill in Earthen Peak UP to Iron Keep which is floating in lava.
Orayn I agree. I think Dark Souls II is good it's just that I feel that something is missing. It's probably the overall quality. Personally, Dark Souls 1 seems like it had a lot more time and care put into it. I like DaS II, but I feel like DaS 1 is more inspirational.
@@alysoncardoso6684 hey thanks. Completely forgot about this post so I appreciate it… may have even did what you suggested. Can’t remember. Anywho thanks bud.
I remember the first time i beat Quelaag. It was a very intense moment. The Bosses before didnt gave me much trouble(maybe the gargoyles but i had solaire with me, lautrec not bc i heard much bad about him and didnt trust him, i thought hed betray me and kill me lol) I hate blighttown up to this day, i get lost every time. The first time i reached the bottom of this ass hole, i saw that hideous thing where quelaag is in and i entered, watched the cutscene and she jumped and i was dead. It was humiliating. Luckily, the ranback was pretty comfortable and i tried it with the women you can summon but i decided against that bc i didnt want to waste my humanity. I had serious trouble bc my build was shitty and i had like an qualit build but without quality and i literally made no damage, but i farmed earlier so it was very expensive to get new levels. And it was night as i fought this bitch, i learned her moveset. It was a teenie tiny moment as i learned that i had to recognize the attack pattern of her. At the End i learned how to react to every of her moves and i had a blast as i made the final hit. I died like an complete idiot sometimes bc of greed and bc i wasnt concentrated and i made a fuckton of mistakes id laugh about today. It took me a very long time to finally beat her I think i spend my whole evening and a good part of the night and i was so happy. I dont think i was ever happier. Id kill just to relive this moment. sorry for my bad english, i fucked up a few sentences, im German haha. And sorry for the long text.

Games so good, even the collision makes fans cry.
I'll never forget my first trek down to blight town from the burg. That descension to the depths is really something memorable.
I was amazed when I realized I could see from Firelink Shrine ALL the way down to Blighttown.
I love how it really is pretty open world, but you won't realize it until you stop and think about it or watch this.

@@TheDude-ud5bd The lake of souls in Hades (it looks peaceful though, hard to believe it is below a super dark area such as Tomb of the Giants.
This made me cry tears of fucking nostalgia...
The beautiful music is a wonderful clash with all the memories of horrible and frustrating deaths I'm experiencing while watching this. :D
Good choice for music.

I like how the game makes you feel like your always progressing, the higher you get the higher the levels

Very creative use of the collision map! Kudos.

Well, the team that Dark Souls 2 had was widely different. Only a small portion of DaS 1's team stayed and had a whole lot more people hired on board.
Masterpiece
Inspiring level-design. :)
The music should have been replaced with a crying baby as the camera flew through blighttown, then went back to normal as it left.
I swear I've heard this song before. What's it called?
Ik i'm very late, but check the description for the music copyright thingy so you can see the name
