I come from the future to say that 6 years later, the first Dark Souls is still a mind blowing work of art, especially in terms of level design. I just can't get enough of the bastard.
The level-design is brilliant, this is the best attempt at a 3D Metroidvania I have seen. Even Metroid Prime, which was brilliant, had to use "infinite" elevators to mask the fact that stages weren't *actually* connected. But here it's actually connected, just awesome.
Yo dude this model is amazing. I'm in awe with how this games interconnects areas, at first you would think the game is linear but when you start opening shortcuts it's fantastic open world.
***** they took a different approach to it, with a different mindset, a dark souls-demon souls hybrid didnt work too well in the end, but if you look up a few theories it actually can make sense dark souls world is amazing though, like, really amazing, i'd want a huge model of it someday
Derp Derpyson with the memory loss theory, a common thing with undead, we step into the elevator, but actually forget that we took an elevator down and travelled to an elevator leading to the iron keep, thats also why the elevator doesnt fit the architectural design of the area
Its true but the area's LOOK better in my opinion. By that, I mean the area's are more greatly varied and no just set in the same place, which is why even though I prefer dark souls and its layout, I prefer the actual areas in DS 2
Any way I could get those models in a standard format. I have a game engine I'm writing and I'd love to import them as a performance test (see if it can handle all the areas of dark souls at once)
Why the fuck do I know your profile???? You might be the person who dueled me online in Yu-Gi-Oh and I kicked your ass and subbed to your channel, if not I have no idea why I know you
Thanks for the link to the map viewer. This allowed me to take a closer look at the Lordvessel room, which I've been curious about for a while. Apparently, there's nothing behind that big door and nothing behind the inaccessible stairs at the back of the room. At least in the tangible sense. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's wondering about the significance of the ten chalices and the huge door behind them, and if it all leads someplace yet undiscovered.
Even better: Show you AND your gfwl friends on the map! (green dots for in summon range, red dots for in invasion range, blue dots for outside any range)
Got sent to you by EpicNameBro - haven't been able to keep watching his channel for a while because I'm holding off discovering anything new until the PS3 DLC comes out, so glad I found this though!
Haha, I sometimes think my commentary is a bit boring, or my audio quality isn't great. I'm glad there are those of you that like listening to me though!
They're actually about on the same level. Most of what you're seeing as deeper than the Ash Lake area is the bottomless pit under Bed of Chaos' boss room, the floor itself is about level with the lowest part of Ash Lake's dunes. Also, consider that the water in Ash Lake most likely gets really deep.
I agree. Once you discover the shortcuts you are like "what the hell I was THIS close to where I left"?? Absolutely brilliant usage of all three dimensions - and no cheating!
It's already been found. You can bypass ceaseless by buffing up your fire resistance and running across the lava that normally blocks you from reaching the next area (with all the capra demons etc).
i usually dont download from youtube ( survey most of the time or virus) but you ( and only from you) have made one hell of a job and the map is so complexe ( still missing same hidden spots) and the maps join so beatiful helped me to get out of same maze and therefore you have from me like and subscribe.
I can't get my head around the placement of the Valley of the Drakes/New Londo Ruins and where the tunnel is that leads to it (via Darkroot Basin). Darkroot is under Undead Parish (?) and kind of shoots off to the left (facing Parish), yet Drakes are all of the way over on the other side of Londo Ruins (if you look forward from Firelink towards ruins, Drakes would be to the left). Therefore, that tunnel from Darkroot would take you away from Undead Burg, which is proven if you stand at the top of the first entry to go down into Darkroot Basin where you can see the tower (Havel) that leads up into Undead Burg - the tunnel leads you right away from being anywhere near New Londo Ruins. ???
+Warstub The Valley of Drakes is the big chasm that separates Undead Burg and Undead Parish. The big drake bridge crosses the Valley of Drakes. If you go down to the Valley of Drakes and look up, you can see the drake bridge from down there. New Londo Ruins is geographically directly below Undead Parish. The elevator from Darkroot takes you directly to the chasm below which is Valley of Drakes. You have to cross part of it to get to New Londo from there.
+Artictoc Yes, I know what you are saying, but if you go up the small spiral staircase from NLR (New Londo Ruins) and stand halfway up, you can see the door above on the right leading out to the VoD (Valley of the Drakes) and below on your left is the doorway into NLR. Now think about the placement of VoD via both doorways - you will see that the Valley is directly opposite itself: Forward, forward and to the left entering NLR, but in the complete opposite direction when you go up the staircase...
I tried downloading this, but couldn't get it working. What's the green area behind the firelink shrine? (behind the elevator connecting the shrine to the parish)
damnit! Why couldn't you have showed us more? T.T This isn't near enough! Can you do another one and showing exactly how each area is connected to one another. Pretend you are the character running through the world and show us.
well there wasn't actually any use for the prism stones other than that particular walkway and maybe the part in tomb of giants where you find the silver serpent covenant ring
I'm playing this now, after finishing BB, Sekiro and DS3. It feels positively archaic in many ways, but the level design is incredible and I wish From had leaned harder into this aesthetic.
I would think that the Abyss has some trickery going on in it to keep you in the middle at all times, you're not moving, only the Four Kings are. That wouldn't surprise me.
This program is awesome! I do wonder if there is any way to change the controls. Using keyboard for zoom & pan and mouse for rotation would be cool. I end up rotating with the mouse and Lordran ends up tilted or upside-down and you gotta do these circles to get it back right-side-up lol
I used that guy's Vlad001 FAQ awesome work And this is aawesome as well this is like super Metroids world map but in 3D but then again DS is like Metroid lol
Not that I know of. The most i've been able to do it extract models with no UVs using a program called Noesis. Now that the PC version is out, it probably won't take long for the modding/hacking community to bring out some tools.
I haven't been able to read the actual interview (I have the book, but haven't looked for a translation yet), so I can only go by ENB's video, but he just said there was a way, and that it looked like a bug. If you get across the lava, you can access the orange charred ring, which you can then use to explore the lava at ceaseless' feet. He does not respond in anyway if you attack his feet, and I think you also walk through them, so this is probably what he means by a bug.
This was one of this first things I checked. Unfortunately there is nothing there. I think originally it was intended to be the place where Andre would have led you to a secret passage (if you've seen the pictures in the design works art book you may know what I'm talking about).
Not with this program unfortunately. At least not until the creator adds it. There is a way, but it's too long to explain here. The xentax forums have pretty much everything you need. It's quite complicated though.
Is there anyway to get the senery/terrain that you cant acsess. also textures? want to check it and and cant find a no-clip mod for exploration. thanks anyway
Yeah, me too. Always wished to fly through the world. The only thing that always bothered me in the worlds is now proven by this map. The bright sky above valley of the drakes. It always felt odd, that the whole darkroot area is dark, but the valley under it, isnt.
Hye brothers, in case anyone was wondering, though the BoC boss room is geographically the lowest point in the game, Ash Lake is Lore wise suppossed to be the lowest point in Lodran. good hunting =)

Theoretically the Kiln of the first flame is between the top of firelink shrine and the abyss where the 4 kings are. If you get taken by frampt(or if you fall in) he takes you DOWN to the kiln while Kaathe swallows you and takes you UP to the kiln.
(this is a very late response but hope it's still interesting) In terms of the collision map data I looked at, it's exactly where you'd think it would be--relative to the Abyss. The Kiln entrance is right above the Abyss, which explains why Kaathe takes you straight up to it. But it's actually not exactly aligned with the hole in Firelink Shrine. It's offset horizontally rather than vertically. The Kiln entrance is actually about vertically level with the Graveyard near the Catacombs entrance, so it's not too far down (only about the vertical distance of a flight of stairs). They probably had difficulty lining up everything perfectly so they made the Firelink entrance to the Kiln more of a horizontal warp whereas the Abyss entrance makes more logical sense. Horizontally speaking, the Kiln looks like it is embedded deep in the cliff face near Firelink. If you start at the Firelink bonfire and face the direction of the place where Griggs of Vinheim stands, you're looking at the Kiln. As it stands, the Kiln entrance (where you place the Lordvessel) is actually below the Undead Parish. Then you take the flight of stairs (where you see the ghosts of the Black Knights) to the Kiln itself, deeper within the cliff face. The place where you fight Gwyn, is (funnily enough) located far below one of the corners of Anor Londo, below the tower where you fight two Gargoyle Demons and then face the two Anor Londo Archers.

Man I love the level design in this game.
One of the smartest map designs ever the damn shortcuts how big it is and yet small due to shortcuts dammmn a game to remember for ever
I can't believe I never saw this till now, 2 years after you put this video out, thanks a bunch man!
Possibly the greatest level design of any game I've ever played.

The explanation in this video remind me of Dark Souls character's sad mood. I liked it.
Now someone just needs to create a mod for PC that connects to this and shows your position in real-time! (put it on your second monitor or w/e)

How can a giant world like dark souls' yet be so small?
from the stairs in the graveyard leading to the catacombs if you look down you can see an area, is that new londo ruins?

Is there any tool to extract the models and textures with UVs?
Do you mean the one next to Gwyn in the O&S boss room? Since this map viewer uses collision data, it only shows square boxes for things like statues.
How did the DLC change the map? Cos I couldn't see the fog to fight Gwyndolin and online I saw the fog in some gameplay does the DLC change the map and stuff?
exist something like this for the characters?
Is there no exporter for this? I would make an interactive map in Unity if there was one.
There is an extractor that works for the game. Not specifically the game, but was made so that it could get rigged models. I think it was called Noesis script?
Perhaps I'm simply being dense, but I downloaded it and I can't figure out how to zoom in on the map. O_o
Is there a way to view in-game models of characters, weapons, and armor and import them to a software like 3DS Max?
great observations, thanks for the reply dude
How do you zoom in and out on that program???
If you haven't worked it out yet, hold right mouse button and move the mouse.

the link is broken ;-;
So, is there a way to convert these .iv files to obj or other files?
are the new dlc area maps available yet?
Это уже преподают в университетах на уроках лвл дизайна?
Do you have any idea how to open the bdt files and mod the textures?
i hope can use

space,ctrl(up and down)

On PC you can use DSFix's dump texture and override texture features.
it actually is really far away, the developers just put it kinda, outside of the other parts of the map and hid it, it really isn't connected.
