Great lesson, Zach. I'm 54 and there are a lot of things I didn't do for fear of failure. However, those days are behind me because my husband and I are closing next week on a 12 acre farm in Central KY (which we are natives of) to start raising our food - mainly beef. We've never farmed and we both have full-time jobs. Should be exciting! Love your channel and I'm happy to have you and Ashlyn in KY. Keep up the good work!

Zach I couldn’t agree more!! The best way to learn is to try. Even if things don’t work out as one thinks, it doesn’t mean you did it wrong. I personally believe the only wrong way is to not do anything and judge those who try.

Boy, it does my heart good to watch you and all the inspiring thoughts you are willing to share. You definitely have your head screwed on right! I was raised in the country where we raised our own meat and vegetables. And all that hard work has really paid off my entire life. And to beat all It's been FUN! I'm now 67. Have scaled down to 1.5 acre. But me and my parents still raise 90% of our food. However, I want to Thank You for the Inspiration! At 67, I find your help me get going and I Pray that many younger people will as well! I'll be keeping an Eye on you!😉😊 You are Destined to Greet Things!

The state forest service has small bare root tree saplings 12 - 16 inches for sale usually have to buy a large quantity 50-100. It seems the smaller they are the easier the transition. I have transplanted small saplings to a pot the first year and let them stay in a protected semi shaded area then set them out the next fall/winter. Keeping them watered if there in no adequate rain is the biggest challenge.

When you plant trees, you have a vision for the future. The last trees I planted was when we got a new dog. They will be there long after the dog, but a good reminder of him. One tip for transplanting is to cut the top back to match the amount of roots you are planting. All you need is a live terminal bud and the tree will grow a new limb/top. Your attitude towards life is awesome. Laugh at your mistakes and celebrate your successes. The more you do, will=more successes. Keep them coming young man!

Not all of us can be farmers/homesteaders sometimes due to financial, health, age, or location holdups. BUT…we can all support local farmers in their endeavours and source locally whenever possible. I am a firm believer in Zach’s message that if you dream it, make it happen. Sigh, farm life is a way too demanding life for my comfort but I sure do appreciate someone else’s efforts when it comes to growing and raising good food. This channel is proving what a life plan, determination and a lot of hard work will get you. A great message for anyone but especially for younger people seeing someone near their age doing what they love.

I planted several red maple trees around our property, one year all of them had the bark split on the west side, I originally thought i might have nicked them with the mower and caused it. A arborist told me that, in spring, the sap just under the bark in the afternoon sun, would thaw, and then
refreeze, causing the bark to split. They are naturally bunched together in nature, shading each other. I still have a few, but most have died from the damage. On round 2 we put some corrugated pipe, painted white, around the trunks per the arborists advice. So far so good.

I think you're doing great Zach! As long as they get sun, water and nutrients they'll do just fine. As you said they're dormant and as long as you could dig up the dirt no problem like you did then they'll be able to grow and establish their roots further. Use some of the chicken manure around the trees to naturally fertilize with phosphorus which will help the roots to grow down strong. A good compost will help all around as well.

What a great way of replanting a needed resource! If you ordered bare root trees all they would do is up root saplings just as you have. Where yours have a head start is in the fact that they have spent mere minutes or hours depending when they got replanted. Bare root trees from a retailer have been days out of the earth, likewise if you mail ordered trees again days out of the ground. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and I’d be most surprised if you didn’t get at least a 75% success rate! ❤

I’m gonna say 90% will make it. Not sure I would of planted all along the driveway though. My brothers drive had trees on both sides, over 1,000 foot driveway. With the sun not hitting it , it was hard on it and caused pot holes due to the frost and the snow wouldn’t melt as quick. He ended up taking a lot of trees out on the side where there was the most sun and his drives been in better shape. Plus easier in the winter cuz the sun melted the snow.

I had a friend that potted up raspberries from her house to a rental for transplant. Unfortunately, life got busy and they never got a chance to get them in the ground; so there they sat amongst the other parts of her garden getting watered, but in 1 gallon black pots. They ate plenty of fruit off of those potted raspberries all summer! Raspberries are rather shallow rooted and don’t like to be too deep, I’m sure you’ll have great success!
I also met a gal that had the tallest & most robust raspberries I’d ever seen & I asked her what she did…she dumped her duck’s pool water on them regularly. Naturally aerated manure tea! Compost tea, worm castings tea, manure tea, weed tea - all readily soluble FREE fertilizer (using what you have) that has for many decades proven its effectiveness! Enjoy those berries!!

I'm a Washington native but the Army had us stationed in Tennessee/Kentucky for 5 years. Such a different kind of forest! Thank you for sharing this superb content with us!!! I've been trying to homestead every time we move and 9 years of losing chickies, permaculture plantings, garden failures, lack of community, etc has been really discouraging. We close next week on 15 acres just West of Olympia and I am pinching myself about our dreams coming true while trying to muster the heart to start ANOTHER garden that will have failures. We don't have family or friends to get seedlings from a forest, but I have ideas about planting a fruit guild orchard with mixed rows of apple, cherry, peach, blueberry, rhubarb, asparagus, strawberries, borage, etc. Thank you for the encouragement to try again. Texas gave me 3 months of drought with a week over 107° instead of a garden this year. Here's to a better garden this year 🤞

***You need to watch the video by Kirsten Dirksen called "Homestead Paradise: got barren land,.." and the thumbnail reads 'Barren land restored at a profit - Mark Shepard'
You're nailing it with your trees and you'll see why when you watch that video. Would love to know your thoughts

Hello there! Fellow Washingtonian here 😊. I’ve been catching up on your videos this weekend and was curious why you guys didn’t look into moving to TN or NC?
We are looking to move there soon but maybe you came across something you’d like to share?

I hope they all survive. Do they have to be staked to protect them from wind? I’ve never planted trees but am excited to watch what happens. Thanks for sharing!
