  • DJI recently made the first firmware available for the Osmo Action 5 pro, which addressed some of the concerns relating to low light stabilisation and Botrate. In this video I look at the results of the firmware in low light running and recommend how to get the best results. #dji #action5pro #actioncameras #runningvlog #running #lowlight

    Excellent!!!! People don’t understand that Jitter has little to do with bitrate (bitrate helps with detail and other things). Jitter has more to do with slow shutter speed. Action cameras (all of them) use aggressive EIS (electronic image stabilization) which fights with the shutter speed to create stability. This jitter and ghosting happens in bright light also (but it’s harder to see.) Cameras like the AcePro series and the Action 5 use Ai to offset this.
    But you are FAR better off dialing in manual settings. Here is what I am finding best:
    4K 30 (30 lets in more light than 60), EIS at Rocksteady (not +), Shutter 1/200-1/8000 (this is very important, you can also use quadruple your frame rate to 30FPS at 1/120, 60 at 1/240, etc. (FORGET the 180 degree rule with this camera, and with all action cameras), Texture at -2 (-1 is ok too), Noise Reduction at -1 or -2.
    In super night mode, you can’t adjust ISO but you can adjust these settings and should if you want better footage.
    Better results in normal, all these settings apply but make sure ISO is 100-25600 at full night, 100-3200 in sunlight and 100-6400 or 12800 at dusk. Shutter at four times frame rate (1/120) or 1/100-1/8000. I would make FOV standard but you could use wide.
    Color is dealers choice, normal 10 bit or DLOG 10 bit (which you’ll have to grade in post or in the app, but DLOG is best). Set EV to -0.3, -0.7 or -1. I like -0-3 - 0.7 in most settings. In very bright light with the quadruple shutter rule, use a Neutral Density filter.
    Out of the box this camera is not even close to as good as it is with these settings dialed in. In fact, pre-firmware it was pretty disappointing. Now it’s MUCH better but jitter will still happen. It happens on my pocket 3 far less, because it’s a gimbal. So try to hold steady as well.
    These are finicky and specialized cameras. You have to manually tweak everything depending on the settings. Hope that helps!
    I’ve never tried 60FPS at night. Do you recommend it?
    This is one of the BEST vids on low light on this camera I’ve seen. Great footage! Cheers!
    PS: They really helped low light in this latest firmware. Now I hope DJI makes HDR a toggle in the next firmware. I love this camera and it will only get better. DJI is pretty good about updating.

      Thank you so much my friend for the feedback and even more so the detailed feedback which I think will help just as many people as what the video hopefully will. The question about 30p v 60p is interesting. The reason I lean to 60p is because I think that it’s helping the stabilisation a bit, with more frames to work with there is essentially half the difference between frames for the stabilisation to analyse. I could be wrong here but I found this by accident as I wanted to do some slow motion for a shoe review I’m working on and noticed less jitter compared to the 30p footage. Even if the logic is wrong on that, to my eyes the additional frames seem to help reduce overall stabilisation issues and boy did this camera need all the help it could get in that department. I will do another test and flick between 30 and 60p to see what can be seen and let you know. If the difference is noticeable I will do a short video on it.
      Thanks again, your time, feedback and knowledge is really appreciated by both me and others reading this 🫡

      @babyboy1971 wow man such a great detailed explanation, i have been looking at comparison/ camera review videos for over a year and no one has went that far into detail. Very very well done, i have a few questions. Regarding 30fps > 60fps, does anything more than double the the shutter speed add more motion blur while filming with a ND filter? For example i run 2.7k 60fps 1/120, EV 0.0, sharpness 0, NR -2. what would be a better set up? And what added benefits would come with it? Im really interested in what you said ab about the 4k30fps 1/120 as i usually shy away from 30fps as 60 typically looks much smoother. I am a motovlogger with the Action 4

      @ 30 just lets in more light so you don’t have to ramp up your ISO as high. I use 30FPS and 1/200-1/8000, NR and Texture -2, no super night. I never shoot in 60. Here’s an example:

    Ah, just commented on your other video! I did some testes before I picked up the Action 5 with the old Action 1, and picked very similar settings to get the stabilisation working. I used a 90 degree shutter, so 1/200, 4k50, rather than the 4k60. This lets in a little more light without compromising stabilisation.
    Going to try this on the action 5, thanks for the video.

    Some good tests there. Would be interesting to see if DJI can tune SuperNight mode. It uses the same sensor as the Ace Pro 2, and that camera's night mode is far more natural looking (although it still has some of that over sharpening going on). I agree that some noise is acceptable. I think a lot of people get obsessed a bit too much with having an image that is totally clean out of the camera. Yet, if any of them shot with film, they'd know that to shoot in lower light levels you need film with coarser grain. There's no free lunch no matter what medium is being used. Doing some form of noise reduction in editing is par for the coarse, even in high end workflows. Audiences will forgive a noisy picture quite happily if the content is good, but they will never forgive bad audio. Further, sometimes the stabilisation isn't always needed. For example, if you are mounting the camera to a solid object such as a car or dashboard or window, stabilisation can look weird. In those instances you can turn the stabilisation off and go for a low shutter speed.

      Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts Simon, appreciate it mate. I agree on the noise.. as you say, some professional film folk even add it for that authentic look. I hope DJi can do something, the results are far worse than in the same mode on the pocket 3 so maybe they will figure it out. Have a great day fella 🫡

    Thank you for this video. This is my exact case use for these cameras. I run the Disney World races and they always start hours before sunrise. I usually film all the races in hyperlapse with intermittent 1x speed. I used the Action 4 last year with decent results using 1/120 shutter speed although I did have some jitter in 1x mode. (I was afraid of the noise if I went to a faster shutterspeed). I'm thinking about renting the Action 5 for this year's races. I would love to see a comparison of the Action 4 to the Action 5 using your settings for lowlight running.
    Another question. How heavy is the Pocket 3 with the battery handle for running? With the Action 4 I use a small very light hollow plastic handle that adds almost no weight. I'm a slow runner so I hold this for about 6-7 hours when "running" a marathon. I like the idea of the 1 inch sensor and a gimbal so I don't have to worry about EIS issues but wonder how practical a Pocket 3 would be. I imagine having 2 battery handles so I could charge one with a small power bank while the other is connected, and keep filming continuously. Of course I would still need an action camera as a backup in case of rain.

      Thank you for the kind works and I’m sorry for the delay in response, unfortunately I’ve been unwell with flu and fever for almost a month but slowly on the mend now.
      Great to hear your similar used case to mine.. I think you’d be better off with the action 5 that the pocket only because of the duration. The quality of the pocket is way better, but holding it for that long would fatigue your arm for sure. You can get decent chest straps that can also take the pocket, but because of the weather capability of the action 5 it is probably a way better option. I did a video race vlog with my pocket early last year of the Saucony 10k if you want to compare the quality, although that was a nice sunny day. Action 5 pro does seem to be getting better for low light with the firmware too and the night mode is now half decent - not great but also not horrible like it was on release.

    I agree with all you say, jitters are better in SuperNight. But D-Log M look so much better, great test👍. But just a question, isn't it better to use lower fps?. Lower fps should give the sensor more time to collect light, resulting in better image quality.

    • @Runningonthemind
      @Runningonthemind  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Johan, thank you, I respect your opinion on action cameras highly as you know. Honestly, I think there is valid arguments for both. In theory the higher fps means less difference between frames for the stabilisation footage to work with making it easier for the stabilisation to output better results. I think at 1/200th shutter speed a frame rate of 60p is going to produce good image quality but there are probably people out there that would disagree. I’m convinced that the 30p in the super night is contributing to the poor texture but it’s more of a feeling based on the tests I’ve done and looking at what is different between the two. Thanks so much, I love watching your comparison videos 🫡

      can you comment on AP2's focus when filming yourself? A lot of reviews have blurry ones, wondering if that's normal

    • @TimBrownTown
      @TimBrownTown 2 месяца назад +3

      @arlamedo3709 The last action cam I filmed on was a GoPro hero 10. So I can't really say in comparison to the other more recent cameras. Supposedly Insta360 addresses the issue but I read it was 2cm closer than the original ace pro, which still makes it 2cm more than the action 5. I don't think this is that big of a deal if you're filming yourself during action, but if you're trying to do a standard vlog or run and gun video like travel stuff, I would recommend the pocket 3. Because it has Auto focus and not Infinity focus like all the action cams. My personal main use for action cams is when I'm filming near the ocean, pool or other wet scenarios, where I would want something simple and rugged. That's why the ace pro appealed to me because the audio was the best I've heard straight out of an action cam and I can remove and replace the wind guard when I come in and out of water. Forget external mics in that scenario. I'm not concerned with perfect footage there. But, your use may differ.

    • @Runningonthemind
      @Runningonthemind  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for the comment Tim. I also have the pocket 3 and love it, and if it were more rugged and waterproof then I’d use it all the time instead. I am in the same but opposite camp to you, considering the Ace pro 2. Decided to stick with the Action 5 pro for now to thoroughly test it since the firmware update. I’m now more inclined not to get the AP2 but I still might. I think based on what I’ve seen the image quality on the AP2 seems better for things like human faces which are like, but I’m not sure it’s enough reason to spend another few hundred pounds on (yet 🤔)

    A couple of thought s and a big thank you. I watched your first review and commented and subscribed. I have been doing a ton of tests myself but not like yours. I do applicate your hard work and research. That being said, I also find super night unusable. I find that strange because night mode on my Mavic 3 classic is useable. That is 4/3 sensor if I remember correctly. When I last commented I was going to return it but I kept it and got the update and I'm keeping it. One question I have. In low light no matter what camera I am using I shoot at 30P but always and at 60P otherwise. I wondered why you shoot at 60P in low light considering how much darker it is. I am guessing it's because the Stabilization likes a higher frame rate?? Can you elaborate for a sec.

    • @Runningonthemind
      @Runningonthemind  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks so much for coming back and watching this one, really appreciate your support mate. I agree that night mode is better for sure on the Mavic 3 and also it’s better on the pocket 3 as well. The 60p question is a good one and also asked by a few others. I think that the higher frame rate is helping the stability with double the frames and only half the difference between frames compared to the 30p. I found when working with 60 (because I wanted to slow so footage) that the results seemed to be more stable and way better in texture than the 30p footage in the same environment. My personal opinion (which may not be correct) is that the shutter speed and aperture (which we can’t move on the pro 5) are determining the amount of light that is produced than the frame rate and the difference of any between 30p and 60p in terms of light will be minimal if any on a camera like this if the shutter speed and ISO are the same. As I said, I could be wrong but that is what I find. Thanks so much for taking the time and appreciate all your feedback and feedback interactions 🫡

    Is there a reason theyre all shot at 1/200th of a second? Just when Im filming I never use a shutterspeed that high due to the "jitter" effect and loss of natural motion blur which makes footage difficult to watch (hence I use ND filters in bright light to lower the shutterspeed to get smooth, natural motion blur). The low light would be far better if you lower the shutterspeed, at 1/200th it would require far more light to expose correctly and higher ISO.

      @@pjhunton good question. I totally agree with you for daylight shooting, but for the issues with poor stability performance in low light in this camera, the slow shutter speed is working against the stabilisation and making it worse (the jittery footage). Anything lower than 1/200th will result in more jitter and stability issues in low light specifically.. I’ve tested it loads of times already. Once the sun is up we can revert to the normal rules and as you say, use ND filters to create natural motion blur and appealing footage where the stabilisation can work with more contrast in daylight conditions to do the job.

The settings I’ve noted seem to work well for me. I will do another test to try to show the difference between using 30p and 60p in these conditions as well (based on other questions). I’m convinced the higher frame rate is also helping the stabilisation and combined with the higher shutter speed is producing the best low light performance for jitter free footage

Yeah it was the London 10k, it was awesome wasn’t it, I already signed up for next year as I enjoyed it so much. Ok so things have changed a lot for the Action 5 pro now for us low light runners. It was shocking at first but the first firmware helped with stability and the more recent one has massively helped the super night mode at 60p. The action 4 is still brilliant, but for our used case I think the 5 is now worth the additional investment. The other option depending on your used case is the pocket 3. It’s not waterproof and not as rugged but the sensor is way way better for low light. If you get it and use the battery extension and the wide angle lens adapter it’s very good. If you watch my video of the Saucony 10k from a few months ago that was done with the pocket 3 and it’s the best quality both for day and low light. 🫡

But I was wondering if we are looking at the overall performance does this camera perform really better than other brands? Is it really worth investing in this camera? Do you have any recommendations?

      Thanks for taking the time to comment. The DJI action 5 pro is the best action camera overall in my opinion. It’s not perfect, but it’s improved a lot with firmware. It’s rock solid, great run time and the sound with the mic attached is far better than the other options. In good light, it’s great. It over exposes the sky a little in bright cloudy conditions but easily sorted either in cam or post. The insta ace 2 is also very good, but I would say the overall package of the action 5 is better.

      @@Runningonthemind I have one more question the adventure combo is $150 more than the standard combo. Apparently the standard combos are out of stock. So i was wondering if i should wait or may be go for the adventure combo if it's worth it?

    When you shoot in lowlight w/ tricky white balance scene, the footage is ruined by fast flickering. I tried diff frequencies and frame rates, it’s still the same. But it goes of when it gets a little brighter

      @@Runningonthemind sadly, it’s in all modes😮‍💨. I’ve done your settings not to go below 1/200, 100-12800,,, aside from getting too dark and noisy, the flickering even gets more horrible! The streetlight posts are solar led panels by the way.

    Should I buy action 5 or 4? 😢😢😢😢😢 im really confused

    • @Runningonthemind
      @Runningonthemind  Месяц назад +1

      @@cryptoforliving9911 it depends what you need it for. If you make videos and need it for action and lower light situations then the 5 is still better than the 4, especially with a few more firmware updates since this video. If it’s more general and mostly during decent lighting conditions then the 4 is better value now, especially if it’s in the sale with as good quality 👍

      I can see that for sure. It does a great job of artificially lighting the scene and without movement I would expect decent results. It’s a great additional used case if you already have the action 5 pro for another reason, but I’m not sure it would be a reason to buy it specifically? Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts 🫡

      @@biggertomorrownow 5 pro is better but 4 is better value now as it’s discounted due to the 5 being out. The difference is marginal in good light so depends on your used case. Both are great and brilliantly dependable.

    This is a very odd review. Why shoot at such a high frame rate in dark conditions? The higher the frame rate the darker it will be. Why not 25? Also 1/200th shutter speed? That's gonna cut your light even more! I think your expectations about what a camera of this size can do are way too high. That combined with these settings all the shoot pounding on the pavement with the expectations that it's gonna be super smooth and beautiful?

    • @Runningonthemind
      @Runningonthemind  Месяц назад

      @@randyscottslavin Hi Randy. Did you watch all of the video, or just parts of it? The reason I ask is because I specifically called out expectation management. I don’t expect perfection from such a small sensor, absolutely not, just usable footage. The reason for the frame rate and high shutter is specifically to help the in camera stabilisation do a better job and avoid the jittery footage that this camera was getting for action / sport at low light. Anything less than 1/160th and definitely at 30p or less was I believe contributing to the jitters with the stabilisation. If I was simply walking slowly or vlogging then I agree, 24p or 30 with double shutter would be ok, but for fast moving footage in my experience with the Action 4 and 5 pro you need 3x and a higher frame rate in low light to give the stabilisation more frames to work with. I appreciate my conclusions may not be right for others but based on the may tests and various manual settings these are giving the best results for running in darker conditions.
