    During Dolores' part, Bruno is actually in the background the whole time. He walks downstairs then upstairs then grooves along. I LOVE Dolores part, because it speaks to her gift so well. The louder steps, the swish of skirts, all louder as she whisper sings because that's how Dolores hears the world. Thats why you see Bruno's outline in the background, because she can hear him moving around too.

    Pepa starts her story with “It was my wedding day,” and Felix responds with “It was our wedding day.” I don’t think he was correcting her. He’s repeating what she said, he just thinks about it differently.
    Isabella and Delores seem to be singing about their different love lives. The group approaching is coming to propose marriage to Isabella, and Dolores is in love with the suitor. But Isabella isn’t singing about love. She was promised the LIFE of her dreams, and an evolving power.

    • @arctic_haze
      @arctic_haze 2 года назад +5

      Isabela is not complaining because she is not supposed to. She must be happy and ideal. But she does not look happy (which is best visible in the dance around Mirabel near the end of the song) because she misunderstand the vision as being about her marriage. Later we learn that Bruno actually meant her to go free from the shackles of family expectations.

    • @raegorz
      @raegorz 2 года назад +1

      I actually think Isabella's verse is MEANT to SOUND like she's the opposite, like he predicted her life perfectly. But the reality is "the love of my life would someday be mine" and as we know...that's NOT Mariano. Also her powers 'growing' hasn't happened yet when this song occurs. So her verse is actually just another example of his predictions being interpreted incorrectly. And as we are aware now, Pepa's wedding day was not a cause from his predictions, just an observation from her perspiration. I love the subtle context of this song and how Bruno is vilified before he even has a line of dialogue in the movie.

    • @kevinbailey8827
      @kevinbailey8827 2 года назад +5

      @@raegorz Isabela doesn't say "love of my life". She says "life of my dreams". Because she is in the process of landing the handsome villager as a husband, we just assume that the life of her dreams is the one she's preparing to enter into. Her prophesy isn't about finding a mate at all. It's about finding her true self.
      Dolores says "man of my dreams", and if she ends up with that man, it means Bruno's visions are open to interpretation.

      @@arctic_haze It’s easy to miss, but in the part where all voices interweave Isabela changes her original lyrics and ends up repeating ”I’m fine, I’m fine”, clearly a sign that she is not fine at all.

      @arctic_haze 2 года назад

    Nice analysis. I like the fact that characters are given such a balanced space for their psychology and emotions with the couple arguing, Camilo making things up about Bruno (dark/creepy description when in fact he probably never met Bruno, and we know from the beginning when he says 7foot frame which is highly inaccurate) and at the end in the overlapping part where Isabella switch from her lyrics to "I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine" because she doesn't really want to get married...the most direct/clear is Dolores but her message is "I can hear him and he's here" but no one seems to pay attention, only the viewer is able to get it

      Edit: Forgot you'd already seen the whole movie when reacting to this, when I replied to your comment.
      I honestly love the entire soundtrack from this movie, including the instrumental tracks and that's not always the case for me.
      That said it might be quite good to hear you comment on the opening song from the film, "The Family Madrigal" as it introduces all the characters, story beats and it's so upbeat.
      Also I've looked at a few others of your videos and given what you've shared of your own life in them I think you might really relate well to "Surface Pressure" sung by Louisa's character. Plus it's such a fun, danceable song as you'll understand when you see the donkeys in the background.
      Plus I'm not sure at what point your going to simply want to watch the whole movie for yourself and these songs, as they're earlier in the film and don't have too many spoilers.
      Honestly I'd love to hear your thoughts on all the songs though whether it's before or after you've seen them in the movie as they're genuinely all so good including the slower ones that you may well need tissues for, especially once you understand their context from the movie.

      Plus as someone who has an increasing love of Latin American music. Would love to hear someone doing more maybe could speak about and maybe do reviews of the different styles of Latin American music and it's various different rhythms.
      Grew up listening to Gloria Estefan and The Miami Sound Machine, but now I have a growing Spotify playlist including Luciano Pereyra and Rio Roma and quite a few others, but I'm not always sure about what more specific genres they're from. I also discovered listening to this sound track that I love Vallenato music, and Cumbia music but don't know much else. Already doing some research myself, but would love to hear people who know these different types of music talk about them.

    A bunch of things that I've been able to notice or interpret throughout the song are:
    In the first part about Pepe and Felix's wedding there isn't much, and instead rather focuses on laying a foundation on the characters' personalities, Pepe holding more of a grudge that her wedding day couldn't be as perfect as it could have been, and her blaming it on Bruno, which is why she specifically frames him as some sort of mischievous person, while on the contrary Felix throughout the entire verse was focusing on enunciating and supporting all of Pepe's lines while also making it clear he still viewed the wedding day as joyous, which shows how caring and upbeat he is, and why Pepa can be emotionally unstable sometimes.
    In the second part with Dolores, obviously everyone already knows that Bruno is in the background there, what I also noticed was that Dolores' verses were talking about Bruno in the *present tense* (IE "I *can* always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling"), which implied that she knew Bruno was in the house, and likely that he was there in the back as well! Which also might be why she pulled Mirabel back when she tried running off to the right, where Bruno was heading! She also understood that Bruno was simply misunderstood and tried helping with his gift, which is why she said it's a burden to have a gift that's so humbling to the other family members, and asked if Mirabel understood which is why the entire song is structured as if she's secretly trying to give Mirabel advice, which sets her character up as clearly wanting to help but also not wanting to be involved in the conflict as a whole, as a quieter (possibly shyer) character.
    In the third part with Camilo, because of the way the song is structured is clearly supposed to symbolize some sort of boogieman-like story, but it's also clear that he's over-dramatizing it and most likely making stuff up due to both being around the same age as Mirabel and using phrases such as "It all fades to black", most likely to playfully scare her. But after she falls down the hole, he still catches her and gently puts her down, showing how careful/caring yet playful his personality is. This can also be seen while trying to cheer up Pepa in a later scene in the movie.
    In the fourth part with Isabela, it's clear from the very start that her verse is supposed to be some sort of Allegory to give off a Princessy or Perfect type of atmosphere, but the thing that I noticed the most in her verse: Similar to Dolores, if you pay attention to the phrasing she's using, when she talks about Bruno's prophecy saying that the life of her dream would someday be hers and that her power would grow, it implies that the *current* life that she's living is not the one of her dreams, as she hates the perfect life she's forced to uphold, which is true, as we find out later in her song "What else can I do?", where she *also* discovers the full capabilities of her powers as well! Completely fulfilling the prophecy Bruno had read for her.
    The fifth part finally has Dolores reveal the prophecy that Bruno had read out for her, as her verse was her giving advice/defending Bruno, and it's that the man Isabela was betrothed to was the man of her dreams, which will be important for the next part of the song.
    What I love about the dinner scene is how it shows the chemistry of the family and how the personalities of each of them affect their daily lives. Obviously, all 4 of each character's verses are all playing at the same time (Dolores' being barely audible), but in the second half of this scene when Mirabel starts piecing back together Bruno's prophecy of her, Dolores' verse changes to the Fifth part rather than the Third at the same that Isabela was also talking about how the life she wanted would someday be hers from the fourth part of the song, and as Isabela starts singing "And I'm fine" you can clearly see a worried look on her face, implying that she's singing this to reassure herself and her future, while at the same time Dolores also starts singing "And I'm fine" together with Isabela as a lower supporting vocal to her which is an amazing detail! As both of the prophecies intertwined with each other, as Dolores wanted to date Mariano who was being engaged to Isabela, while Isabela didn't want to marry Mariano and instead wanted to figure out what made her happy in life instead.
    One last thing I noticed is how the first Verse talked about Bruno in the past, second in the present, and the Fouth being in the future! While the third being unknown/false things for the purpose of romanticizing it. The first verse focusing on dwelling on/being stuck in the past, the second verse focusing on the present and what should be understood/be known at the time to help fix the problem, while the third and fourth verses could be symbolizing how people tend to romanticize/dramatize the future or the opposite, worrying about the unknown future of their lives and being scared of it.
    But also, I'm kinda stupid so I dunno lol
    Edit: Another thing I almost forgot to point out! In the scene with the random civilians, both the man with the Gut and the man with a bald head were shown buttoning up his shirt to hide his gut, and wearing a wig to hide his bald head, implying that they were ashamed of it and that they had wished Bruno hadn't told them about it, but in the song at the end where they're making the new house and Bruno is accepted by everyone, they can both be found openly displaying their large gut and bald head! Also symbolizing that they've accepted Bruno!

    One of the little things about this song that hit me was that as Mirabel was falling down the hole during Camilo's part, the chorus was sliding up vocally, I feel like it added tension to the scene. Love your reviews so much, had to subscribe. You are so fun to watch!

    For the song , a lot of people focus on Dolores or Mirabel , but one of the moment that impact me the most was at the end when you hear Isabella saying : I'm fine ! I'm fine ! I'm fine !
    They clearly put it there so that it couldn't be heard , and this is a way to show that Isabella is hiding her feelings 😁

    I absolutely love the overlaping part of this song, it's something that I never heard tbh, the fact that they all sing their own lyrics, yet it remains so clean and amazing is just breath-taking, the lyrics weave with each other and overlap in such a good way, it's a shame that some translations couldn't do it, due to words being so different in there language (I'm Polish myself, and Polish version of this song is actually kinda bad, the final part is kinda messy)

    For me, the small changes are the most impactful. Like at the end, Isabela's verse "Grapes that thrive on the vine." Keeps at the same chord (Idk if is the right term but yeah), her face while saying "I'm fine." Is everything but fine and Camilo's "Sees your dreams and feasts on your screams" has it's key changed. Omg I love it.

    One thing I find quite interesting, from a lyrics point of view, is that everyone is talking about all the terrible things Bruno predicted would happen to them and in comes Isabella, talking that Bruno promissed her life would be perfect. And at first it looks like "of course, everything always go well for her" but later on you find out that nope, the last thing she wants is for her life to be perfect, so Isabella was secretly as pissed off with his predictions as the rest of her family.

    The only thing I’m not a fan of when people are reacting to or analyzing this song is they talk about the singing and the music…. Which is cool. But no one really talks about the narrative writing of the lyrics. What the words mean, imply, foreshadow or reveal. I think ONE thing was pointed out in this video at least which is more than most videos but still.
    Like no one talks about how this song reveals so much about Dolores. This song is what reveals she had a thing for Mariano. No one really reacts to her revealing that she was basically told she was going to watch her crush be with someone else instead and how sad that is. Or point out that Dolores is revealing she grew up always hearing the mutters of someone she was told is a bad person and also lead to believe has since left. But she and only she can hear him as if he’s still around. His presence is always with her putting her on guard. It also implies that maybe he’s secretly still around after all. Why does she associate him with sand? And what does Mirabel thing of Dolores making that comparison given what she does know so far?
    Camilo (shape shifter) is also telling quite the tall tell about Bruno too, almost like a myth about a boogie man. In the midst of all this, Isabella was told something good apparently. For anyone who already watched the movie, when was she and Dolores told anything by Bruno if he’s not around? And what does the vision about Isabela actually mean to her if given her feelings about current situations?

    Besides being a song (on the surface level) about Bruno this song also doubles as the second establishing number about the Family Madrigal... and the way that is shown is just brilliant...
    1. 'The Family Madrigal' song is the first establishing number in the beginning called 'The Family Madrigal'
    It's on the nose and right on the surface (title)... and the song is all about the the Family on a superficial surface level... here are their names and here are their powers and here is what they do with them...
    2. 'We Don't Talk About Bruno' (this song) in which we are told that this is also a song about the family this time in the structure of the song instead of outright telling us in the title... thereby telling us who they are inside under the surface (structure)...
    And it is doing this by first giving each of them different and distinct phrasing and tonality and musical structure that matches their personality... and then (when they blend them all together as the family Madrigal while setting the table) they are using a blending technique actually called 'Madrigal' (the same as the family name) bringing it all together - and showing that while they are a Family on the surface (harmonizing using the madrigal-technique) they are fractured under the surface (different phrasing, tonality, musical structure)...
    And we are just scratching the surface of all the little details in this song that help tell this story... the level of detail in the music and storytelling of this movie is just astounding :)
