    Something really cool that other people pointed out was that in this song Mirabel’s “You just seem like your life’s been a dream…” part is the same melodic line as Isa’s “He told me that the life of my dreams…” from We Don’t Talk about Bruno

    That key change after the halftime breakdown works on soooo many levels omg not just what you said, but also the conventional thing would've been to move UP a half step to increase the drama, but instead the music shifts DOWN, completely subverting your expectation. Like, hey you know what? The "correct" thing, the "right" thing here would've been to modulate upwards; why don't we try going down instead and see how that works?
    Lin Manuel-Miranda is a genius composer, omg

    • @LizaQuin
      @LizaQuin 2 года назад +2

      It really does work on so many levels. Agreed! The interesting thing is that it does move up a half step (the key) BUT because we’re going from the F# to the F, it feels like it lowers. Which is really pretty! Lin is quite the genius, indeed!

    This song is VERY emotionally impactful for me as it reminds me greatly of my relationship with my sister. My sister seems to be one of those kinds of people who are effortlessly perfect and beautiful even on a bad day and there's this great divide between us that we struggle to get across due to a childhood incident that has haunted me still to this day and made me afraid of getting close to my sister. I do deeply love her and all, but this incident really hurt our relationship. As the older sister, I'm in this position of needing to take care of my young siblings and being able to take responsibility for them, even if I'm not quite ready for it. I do have a brother who is older than my sister but still younger than me, but he and I are so close in age that I never really needed to adapt this "older sibling responsibility" mindset until my sister was born and I was not ready for it. If anything, my brother was more the mature and responsible one who had to look after me due to several things. He was just always way more mature and responsible than me. So, when the moment came where I needed to be a responsible big sister and protect my sister, I failed to do so. I understand now that I was not completely at fault for what happened and there were factors that prevented me from doing what I was supposed to do (I'm autistic and have always had this really bad habit of uncontrollably slipping into a daydream even when I'm alert, though I am much better at it now). The incident nearly cost us my sister and, in the heat of them moment, I was blamed for the incident which had massive consequences on my psyche. I thought that I was doing the right thing by closing myself off from my sister, but I realized over time that I was needlessly punishing myself for something I had no control over. By the time I had begun to come to terms with what happened and tried to reestablish a bond with my sister, she was at a difficult age where she didn't really want anything to do with me and thought of me as her weird, annoying sister. There were times were I got so upset with her rejections towards my attempts to make things right between us that I would say something that hurt her deeply without realizing it in the moment.
    Over time, I came to learn that my sister wasn't as perfect as I had believed. My sister has a beauty that I can only compare that to a modern-day Snow White, but she was apparently bullied quite a big for being on the chubby side. Yes, my sister has always been slightly chubby, but I only ever thought that it just added to her natural charm and beauty. I didn't realizes how much she worried about her looks until I got mad at her for hogging up the mirror when I needed it for just a moment (we shared a room at the time) and made a comment that really hurt her. After I was made aware that she had this issue, I was greatly horrified with myself for having said something so cruel and very confused as to how anyone could think she wasn't beautiful. In recent years, I found out that my sister suffers from anxiety. This is apparently a common trait in my family as I, my brother, and mother (quite possibly more) also suffer from it, though in different ways. I am much more open about my anxieties while everyone else seems to try to suppress it or hide it. I never would have guess that my sister is suffering from anxiety had my mom not informed me of it. Funny side note: For Christmas this past year, I decided to get her a cactus-shaped squishmallow to help her with her anxiety as hugging squishmallows for me has always been super relieving of stress and comforting. I decided to get her a cactus-shaped one because I knew how much my sister loves cacti. It wasn't until New Years after Christmas that I finally got to see Encanto and that moment when Isabella has her character epiphany when she accidentally grows a cactus. Again, it just shows how symbolic this song is for me and my sister.
    I honestly do hope that there will come a time in our lives when my sister and I can finally set aside our differences and fix our shattered bond. As crazy as my sister may drive me from time to time, I do still deeply love her and wish we could be closer. Every time I listen to "What Else Can I Do", it gives me hope that my sister and I can one day find clarity and feel united as sisters again. The next time my sister is back home from college, I really hope I can convince her to sit down and watch Encanto with me. She's currently studying film and I think she's wanting to learn to be a director or producer or something behind the scenes of movies. Maybe the scenes with Mirabelle and Isabella will help spark her desire to improve our relationship, too. At least that's my hope. If it still takes us a few years to improve things, that's fine. I just want us to feel like true sisters again and not let things between us be weighed down because of one mistake when we were very, VERY young.

    I was aware that Mirabel was singing the melody of Isabela's verse in WDTAB, but I only just realized that she's singing on what she thought Isabela was and at the end of Mirabel's verse here she's realizing (along with her sister) what Isabela IS.

  • @MrKaelas
    @MrKaelas 2 года назад +25

    Your analysis was wonderful!
    One thing I wanted to add, that I don't see a lot of reactors mentioning is when Mirabel is seeing her sister for the first time and singing "From the outside, your life seems so perfect", Isabella is singing "How far do these roots go down?" And I find that really profound, because it's like suddenly, maybe for the first time in her life, she's thinking about more than just what's on the surface. How far do her roots go down? What is even down there in the depths of her soul?
    To me that puts a spin on them later singing we'll rise up to the skies as well. It would be the trees with the deepest roots that can handle rising to the highest heights. So her saying she wants to rise also means she wants to know herself from root to treetop.
    Anyway, just some of my thoughts. Loved the analysis and particularly the commentary of how the music affects the message and vice versa! I really enjoyed it.

    I also love that at 4:16 we get a return of her melody introduced in We Don't Talk About Bruno, but now Mirabel's singing it! Sort of echoing who she thought Isabela was while she's beginning to understand there's a lot more to her sister. It also comes back in All Of You, I love when musicals have these small recurring themes you can pick up on.
    Would love to see a breakdown of Surface Pressure!

    This song made Isabela my favorite character in the movie. Like Isabela, though thankfully not nearly to the same extent, I've felt the pressure in my life to be 'perfect.' And while it hasn't caused me nearly the stress it does Isabela, she instantly became very relatable to me.

    Thanks again for the great analysis of this song. Both in terms of musical elements and how it fits in the characters journey and the journey of these sisters and the story as a whole.
    *Possible Spoilers for the movie ending*
    It's amazing how this song and the realisations that both sisters get in and through it bring them together in such a special way. In fact it's really through the journey that Mirabel goes on during this, her sisters song, that she finally realises what her own gift actually is. Yes she does doubt it for a little when her Abuela criticises her, before her own moment of realisation, but then comes back to it more complete and fully by the end.

    Great analysis! Love the mentions of the plants and their pronunciations in Spanish. One question, the moment where the key changes, does it go 1 key up or half a key up, or does it go 1 key down or half a key down?

    • @LizaQuin
      @LizaQuin 2 года назад +2

      Thanks so much! That’s a great question. The key goes up a half step, but it feels to some like it goes down because it’s moving from the F# (end of bridge) to the F (“A Hurricane of Jacarandas”) as it transitions into the modulated prechorus. But, if you’ll notice, the prechorus melody starts on E prior to that moment where it shifts up to the F. :)

I love both songs so much because being the eldest and the responsible one of my family, I relate to all 3 sisters about different things- Miriabel feeling not good enough and a black sheep of the family, the need to keep the family together and take on all the burdens with the pressure of keeping it all together in a "pretty package".
