I regretted getting rid of my 2021 Crosstrek Limited a few months ago. I ended up back in a 2024 Sport that I pick up last weekend and couldn’t be happier.
I just got this vehilce. Brand new off the lot and it currently has 20 miles total. Its the same Subaru Crosstrek Sport in Alpine Green and we got an excellent deal with some nice stuff in it. This is an extreme upgrade from my last car which was a 2006 Subaru Forester premium.
The new crosscrek shows that Subaru has listened to their customers. The car looks great and user friendly on the inside. I tow a ton with my 2016 and I'm thrilled that the wilderness has such a high towing capacity.
It's too bad that they did not offer the Limited and Sport with a tow package, adding in a transmission cooler to be able to bump it up to 2500, leaving the Wilderness with 3500 because of the revised gearing.

The best car review channel out there. You don’t use constant filler words such as “as you can see” “umm” etc. You’re well prepared, and the video quality is on point. After I watched this video I ordered my 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Sport in Alpine Green. Thank you so much for making my decision an easy one.
Appreciate the video, very informative. I drive a 2018 Subaru Crostrek, I only have 54K miles, but I’m so tempted to trade it off after watching these videos!
Absolutely love my 23 6MT. My only complaint was the unavailability of the 2.5L. But the trusty 2.0L does just fine. Gets up to speed reasonably, and gets decent millage. In the few months around 100 miles a day I've been averaging between 28 and 30 MPG. I've also driven it through Old Durr Road starting from the Selah side all the way through. And where I thought the little 2.0L would struggle it did with confidence. TCS and Brake Hold Assist were turned off. The new Generation looks great. Sad to see the Manual get canned but such is the way, and I really dislike those tablets. That Tablet alone was enough to make me not pursue the current Generation WRX. It's is just obnoxious. But if they bring back the Hatchback model I might reconsider. Big wishing right there. Overall new Gen looks nice, just not for me and my old ways. Gotta have my manual transmission. Excellent review, much enjoy your videos. Always entertaining and educational.
Agree! I'm glad I got my 2023 6MT early this year. I get about 29 mpg average. I also have a 2023 sports model, bought it late last year. I love both. 2024 models will cost more and sadly no more manual transmission. Both of mine still made in Japan, which I preferred.
Just want to say, I bought a 2024 Crosstrek sport after viewing your video. What a nice car, I’m so far very happy about it (Maybe except for the wireless phone charger which never work when I have any iPhone case on). Thanks for making great contents, love your channel!

As always, love your reviews. As someone else said, cant wait to see you test this on your course to give some comparison to similar vehicles. Still sort of disappointed they didnt upgrade the powertrain options in the new model. Should have made the 2.5L standard (like the CX-30) and made an option of a tweaked 2.5L or mild turbo. Also, the big screen looks nice, but would prefer physical buttons for the climate controls.
@@brendanmalloy-painting I have the 2.0L in an Impreza, and agree, it is not as bad as a lot of commenters or even testers make it out to be. Just makes it a bit difficult to drive smoothly. I think the extra torque of the 2.5L would help a lot. As I said above, other manufacturers have caught up, and offer better standard engines (Mazda) or more powerful options (Kia, Mazda, even Corolla Cross hybrid). I have pretty much given up seeing a turbo Crosstrek/Impreza, but am hoping there will be a more powerful hybrid soon with better low end torque. You just answered one of my questions without answering it at all. I've questioned with the new wide angle camera below the mirror how that space is being utilized. Something I am trying to spread the word about, because it is largely misunderstood, is that these Subaru's are ALWAYS in Xmode. The "Normal" in this version that has XM1 and XM2, could be thought of as being XM1.5. XM1, Dirt and Snow, is the strategic logic that allows for the least amount of wheel spin, at the expense sometimes, of momentum, and invasiveness, and MPG. XM2 is the strategic logic that is less invasive, allows for more wheel spin, and more momentum in deep mud and snow, where you want to keep moving to avoid getting stuck. It also uses the brake, but tries to not STOP the wheels. The "Normal" Mode, is the strategic logic that is on all of the time, and can be thought of as an Xmode as well, because it is the compromise between these two strategies. It allows for SOME momentum and SOME wheel slip, but not as much as XM2, and a lot more than XM1. And the truth is, that you want to keep your car in "Normal" most of the time, even offroad, because most of the time, it is the perfect place between these two extreme opposite torque vectoring strategies. If you have your vehicle in XM1 just because you are on a dirt track, you are putting wear on your brakes, adding noise and vibration to your ride, and reducing your MPG quite a bit. And it's absolutely un-necessary. I have a Wilderness Outback, and I have been in snow, mud, deep snow, deep mud, and deep sand. I am ALWAYS in Normal mode, even offroad. The only times (twice in several years) I have needed Xmode is when I truly could not get started from a stopped position, in either direction, and didn't want to dig a hole. I put it in XM1 and it got me right out. A few weeks ago, I was filling sandbags out at the beach, for the incoming tropical storm, and I drove right onto the beach, on about ten trips. On the last one a dog ran in front of the car and I had to hit the brakes, and it made me stuck. I used traction boards, and XM1 (because I had no momentum to preserve, I was trying to GET moving without digging in), and the Xmode and the boards got me right out on the first try. I was very impressed with the difference it made. But again, it is usually not needed OR WANTED. The Normal mode is going to be the right compromise for 99% of the situations you find yourself in, and is VERY effective offroad without any adjustment or modification in most cases. So if I can impart anything, it is, that you are ALWAYS in Xmode, and Subaru's controls and marketing may make it seem like you aren't but the truth is, XM1 and XM2 are simply extremes on both sides of the AWD torque vectoring that you are always in. There are some added features however, like Hill Descent control, that is activated in XM1, so for some really steep or sloppy conditions, go for it. But you don't NEED to. Your Subaru is capable out the door, in Normal mode. It is always Torque Vectoring as needed. Databyter
I have a few locations here that are looking more severe compared to routes in the video. Especially after the rain 😂 For Subaru only! So you're welcome to film a few episodes))
I’m surprised that the auto vehicle hold isn’t one of the quick functions like where you can disable auto start/stop. Our 2022 Legacy was updated at the dealership to get the update head unit that included AVH on the main screen.
I just got a 2023 limited crosstrek last month. Would of been cool if it had dual X mode with it. But has all leather wich is very nice! Drives very good. The stearing wheel feels great. Over all happy with my purchase so far! Cool that it actually has a cd player and the Harman kardon sounds great. They should make the car with a full spare tire. I like the little screen better. Nice Reviews man keep up the good work.
Falken tires are not generic they are actually amazing tires. Had a set on my 18 wrangler and they were better than my old BFG KO2 all terrains. They have a cool history too.. started ad an Indy tire maker.. but they should have used the all terrains on crosstrek.. but fuel economy lol
Love my 2019 6 speed manual crosstrek. Was going to look into 2024 model..but that's not going to happen now...doesn't come in manual. I will not drive a CVT or automatic... I like to have full control of my car. Its a shame..cause I like this color and the lil more power..oh well..I just keep my 2019 6 speed. 😊😊
I have a 2021 Crosstrek Sport that's been modified to be much more then the new Crosstrek Wilderness .. easy to do with places like Rallitek for suspensions and other goodies .. doing mods yourself will save you major bucks.. That center screen for me is a real deal breaker .. to change your HVAC settings you have to look at the screen to do this .. taking my eyes off the road to do this is a major 'No-No' as is the GPS and other settings requiring you to take your eyes off the road. In the past 10 years driving my other rig I have never had a close call. In my 2021 I've had 4 close calls all due to the Eyesite system. My 2021 would be the perfect rig if I could only shut off or get rid of Eyesite .. it's a real pain in the ass! 🤠
I mean, he literally showed us how to adjust the temp by TELLING IT TO. Besides, unless your 2021 is a "self driving" Subie that we've never heard of, the Eyesight isn't the reason you had a close call or two, that would be you.
@@TheOGMattBurns Well, two of my 'close calls' are on file with Subaru International .. part of the Class action suites that are on file now .. and pray tell, what Subaru are you driving??
@@TheOGMattBurns Day two of owning my Trek I was headed to show it off to my friend .. going thru a bridge construction zone traffic was pulled down to one lane designated my yellow lines .. one ended and 20' later there was a Jersey barrier .. the car did not 'see' the barrier and I missed it by inches! I was a Smith System drivers training instructor for my company for 7 years .. which taught me to keep my hands on the wheel and be ready. The second of the deadly incidents was just recently. At night with a wet windy night and high winds. Just passed a Peterbuilt semi and eased back into my lane when a sagebrush blew in front of the Trek triggering the 'Object Detected' at 72 mph at slammed on the brakes .. almost got a Peterbuilt tattoo! When the brakes slammed on I had no control of the vehicle .. the car took over. Subaru is building cars for inattentive drivers .. are you one? I'm not.
They clearly masked and modified the color on those clips (even the headlights are a little green because of this in some shots.) I'm not sure why they did that. The muted color in reality is much better.
It was about 1000 ft. Not enough to matter. But it was an unscientific test. To be taken with a grain of salt. Also, it's not counting "roll out". Various testers use various forms of roll-out to calculate the time so you can't compare #s directly.
I USE THE PADDDLE SHIFTER TO DOWNSHIFT WITH BRAKING AS I DID WITH A MANUEL MY 2024 IS SMOOTH AND HADLES WELL IS RELETIVELY QUIET WHEN THE ROOF CROSS MEMBERS ARE REMOVED SINCE THEY DO CREATE SOME NOISE AT HIGHWAY SPEED NOT TO MENTION THEY WILL VERY SLIGHTLY DIMINISH mpg.
One correction. Crosstrek Sport previous generation also had this 2.5L engine with 182HP. It was introduced I think for 2021 model year. Only base and preimum had 152HP engine which is still there and build in Japan.
This is "more powerful" than the 2021 model (which I own). Due to engine tinkering, this new one puts out 2 more lbs-ft of torque. Technically, it is the most powerful Crosstek ever. Technically,.
@@drivingsports Yea, couldnt they have tuned it a bit more? Hate to keep bringing up the CX-30, but Mazda added 6 more horsepower (to 191) when they retuned their 2.5L a year or two ago.
In review of this excellent video and the prior on the 2.0 Premium is it correct the 2.0 has a faster 0-60 time? We own a 22 Outback (wife loves it) and are considering a new Crosstrek for our daughter. Seems like the 2.0 may be enough for her. If we go sport and 2.5 then we are near Outback Premium costs and then maybe we want more vehicle around her. 🤔
Curious what the different gearing in the wilderness will do for acceleration. Considering selling my 22 civic si (it’s my work vehicle) for a new crosstrek so I have something more versatile/capable for Oregon’s rainy/snowy seasons.
It's a noticeable difference to acceleration but of course you get an equal impact on the MPG. Don't know exactly how many seconds you'll shave off a Sport trim but I know the Forester Wilderness the same engine and that Wilderness trim lost about 5 mpg
You shouldn’t have to. But if you need more speed or momentum turning TC off may be the better option. We did that in this video in the sand section: ruclips.net/video/uZTxOJH10tE/видео.htmlsi=I0WL1_LjS_fkZbA-
Would really like to see Subaru spend a couple of dollars and put front facing cameras on all their suvs. They really are useful when going off road. Maybe they could leave them off the Touring Trim. They probably don't go off roading so much.
The Alpine Green in most Subaru literature and videos appears darker/army green. The test vehicle you had appears muted. Was it because of the overcast sky or is it really muted?
@@drivingsports Thanks a lot for this note! I don't like the dark green shown on the Subaru website. I am glad to hear that the color changes (and gets lighter) based on environment. Thanks a lot for this amazing review and the review of the Premium trim.
I wish I could have waited to the Crosstrek Wilderness, but I have to return my current Nissan lease by the beginning of September. Looks like I will be getting the Limited, and adding on a set of LP Adventure 17" Black wheels and a set of (lighter than most AT tires) Falken Wildpeak Trails, which should be far more than good enough for my dirt/muddy driveway, the dirt road to the boat (jet ski) launch, and snowy roads in the mountains. The Limited 2.5L should be just enough to tow my trailer (small utility trailer) that carries my 400 lb motorcycle and rarely my lawn tractor. I also have a small jet ski. I towed all of those before with my previous Crosstreks - a 2014 and a 2016, and they did it. I mean, it feels better towing them with my pickup, which the lease is ending, but it should manage.

These cars are great as they bridge a huge gap between highway and city friendly commuters and more serious off-roaders like Wranglers and Trucks. I want to see this segment grow and improve because they are awsome for daily life while still being able to handle more than a regular crossover.
Compass had a big interior overhaul for 2022 and just got a new turbo motor for 2023. We’re filming it next month.
7:10 missed a chance to set temperature to 69 degrees. If only the computer responds to "Nice"
I sometimes get the blindspot monitoring and turn signal mixed up. I wish they made the blindspot into a different color.
I love having the rear cross traffic alert on my 2018 Outback
Order one ,will pick up tomorrow.
Outstanding Video 😊
Waiting for them to drop the CVT and add a turbo. I’ve had two crosstreks. Won’t buy a 3rd until they do.
YES--- I LOVE that auto STOP/START shutoff button... wish they'd OUTLAW that stupidity.. The rest looks GREAT..and the blue is BEAUTIFUL... I'm just curious about the reliability of the cvt...
Ty ryan, been waiting for this!
living in canada this car brand new limited is 50 grand with all taxes in which is pretty crazy the taxes just got cost more than the US which sucks down there the car is prob like 36 all in? for the winters we get each year good choice for a car like this.
been waiting for this video!!!
Hats off to the Forester for proving that it's a versatile and capable SUV. A true adventure companion!

Nice to explanation
Cannot wait to see you take the Wilderness trim out for a bit of muddy fun!
My concern are the rims that look like they're an inch off the ground. I live in a state with bad road's.
I hope I can get my hands on the wilderness edition later this year.
NO CLUTCH, NO SALE!
Touch screen is a size queen's dream.
I think the LOTR-esque music at 25:37 has convinced me to buy this LOL
I have a few locations here that are looking more severe compared to routes in the video. Especially after the rain 😂 For Subaru only!
So you're welcome to film a few episodes))
I’m surprised that the auto vehicle hold isn’t one of the quick functions like where you can disable auto start/stop. Our 2022 Legacy was updated at the dealership to get the update head unit that included AVH on the main screen.
You can add it as a shortcut so it is on the main screen.
Great review. 🎉
This makes me want to buy a Subaru
Excellent work! Really enjoyed this review 👌
I love the way this guy says "button"
Ryan, Nobody expects a Monday morning review, how will the Crosstrek do? 😁
You can also use voice command to change the temperature.
@@sonny1597 please explain these "Close calls"
I'm not.
Still no heated steering wheel for 2024. But comes standard on the Canadian trims.
put some gloves for a sec.
their promotional video makes the green much darker lol
They clearly masked and modified the color on those clips (even the headlights are a little green because of this in some shots.) I'm not sure why they did that. The muted color in reality is much better.
thanks for the video! make one for the wilderness next!
Definitely need more MCU battle montages with suspenseful music, 👍🏽
Minor correction: 45 degrees is a 50% grade and 90 degrees is 100% 19:55
Will the screen get burn-ins?
LCD displays rarely get that, as it's more common to CRT type screens, or older TV's/monitors.
@@TheOGMattBurns how many years are the screen so pose to last?
Question on the 0-60 time. Was this test done at altitude? 9.5 sec seems really slow for the 2.5L.
It was about 1000 ft. Not enough to matter. But it was an unscientific test. To be taken with a grain of salt. Also, it's not counting "roll out". Various testers use various forms of roll-out to calculate the time so you can't compare #s directly.
最好的车评人👍
I love the way you say button
Washer on rear camera, YES! You really need this in the winter time, when the roads are salted and your camera gets muddy within a day or two.
I USE THE PADDDLE SHIFTER TO DOWNSHIFT WITH BRAKING AS I DID WITH A MANUEL
MY 2024 IS SMOOTH AND HADLES WELL IS RELETIVELY QUIET WHEN THE ROOF CROSS MEMBERS ARE REMOVED SINCE THEY DO CREATE SOME NOISE AT HIGHWAY SPEED NOT TO MENTION THEY WILL VERY SLIGHTLY DIMINISH mpg.
The music at 25:37 sets this video above the rest.
I don’t know which one I want. Either wilderness or sport crosstrek. I still got first gen crosstrek!
Australia have both WRX - sedan and wagon ( the wagon is the nicer looking versions actually the best looking Subaru atm)
Excellent video, I learned a lot. Can you explain when to turn off traction control while using X-mode?
You shouldn’t have to. But if you need more speed or momentum turning TC off may be the better option. We did that in this video in the sand section: ruclips.net/video/uZTxOJH10tE/видео.htmlsi=I0WL1_LjS_fkZbA-
@@drivingsports
Just watched it, but I'm getting a 2024 Sport. In that trim, is X-Mode2 just X-Mode1 with less TC?
I'm loving the crosstrek more now. Also have you heard any thing about the Baja coming back? I so some thing like that on someone youtube.
Pulling the trigger on this in the Canadian verdion or our version of the Base. What did you think of the black headliner?
I like the way you destroy the hatch on the camera car !
Neat upgrades, but nothing I actually want so I'll keep with my PYP 21 sport tyvm. Plus I have a cd player and this doesn't :p
Would really like to see Subaru spend a couple of dollars and put front facing cameras on all their suvs. They really are useful when going off road. Maybe they could leave them off the Touring Trim. They probably don't go off roading so much.
Wilderness editions should all have them for sure.
The Alpine Green in most Subaru literature and videos appears darker/army green. The test vehicle you had appears muted. Was it because of the overcast sky or is it really muted?
It does change based on environment, but I never saw it as green as the Subaru media showed it.
@@drivingsports Thanks a lot for this note! I don't like the dark green shown on the Subaru website. I am glad to hear that the color changes (and gets lighter) based on environment. Thanks a lot for this amazing review and the review of the Premium trim.
I think I gonna keep my 2021CKG outdoor :)
I really loved this videl. I want to make a question. What will be the best driving mode for off road. In automatic D or with paddle shifts in 1st. In automatic torque converter I preferred L but I didn't drove a CVT before.
Switch to manual and use paddles to keep the revs higher.
DId you do the 0-60 test in sport mode or intelligence mode? That would make a difference, right?
