    I have about 1600 miles on my new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness, Loving it!
    My 2013 Crosstrek was totalled in an accident on December 22nd. The safety of my 2013 Crosstrek saved my life, that is why I have a 2024 Crosstrek.

    • @Ziptieguy
      @Ziptieguy 3 месяца назад

      Can I ask about how it saved you? My wife is not wanting such a small vehicle. F=ma. She is scared of colliding with a much heavier vehicle and getting squashed.

    • @UtahJohn777
      @UtahJohn777 3 месяца назад +3

      @@Ziptieguy All U.S. cars are safety rated. Subaru is rated amongst the best. It has to do with how the energy is dissipated in a collision (crumple zones, etc) and air bags. We were in a bad head on collision with several other vehicles. My son and I were able to walk away while the other (bigger),vehicle occupants were carried away in stretchers. I never thought much about safety ratings until that day. A big part of buying another Crosstrek was based on that experience. Kinetic Energy must be spent, ideally not on the occupant. It is possible for a person to die in a vehicle that didn't receive much damage.

    A worthwhile hour. This channel's tests helped me to select my '21 Crosstrek hybrid, which is my best ever vehicle. Drove it 2000 miles in the last 10 days. It certainly is a pleasant highway drive with low fatigue. Aftermarket all-terrain tires help it on dirt roads and on grass which are part of many of my trips. The tires and a roof basket (to make up for loss of cargo space for the batteries) bring down mileage to around 30 mpg on 65 mph expressways.

You highlight almost all of the key features, performance, pros and cons in the vehicles class and price point, it is glorious. Can I make a suggestion? I notice that in your reviews, you don't often highlight audio system performance, this is important to many of us considering a daily driver, acoustic performance is also important! I was bummed that you cut the drive between Missoula and Coeur d'Alene short. That is a gorgeous drive! (And moody weather seems to be the norm.) But bonus points for the 50,000 Silver Dollar Inn billboards. That climb out of the gorge is definitely a gas mileage killer in both directions. Glad you mentioned and showed the Gray Fire west of Spokane. I was driving out west to see family in Seattle when it closed down I-90 and they routed us out on hwy 2... and kept rerouting us enroute because the fire was such a wildcard. Coming back through 2 weeks later was insane.
    As far as Subarus and how they do on highways, I've got a 2022 Forester Sport and the last two years on road trips, I barely creep over 30 mpg. In town mix of street and highway, I don't even make the city numbers. Previous to the Subaru, I've ALWAYS easily bested the EPA numbers on the sticker. Even on a Honda Element which is more of a brick than the Forester. (The mental gymnastics that I've seen forum members do to try to explain it away are more astounding then Simon Biles.) The gas mileage numbers on the Forester computer are always 1.5 mpg more than hand calculated. I love the Forester for road trips but these two things leave me a little disappointed. The winds across Kansas, Eastern Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Eastern Washington are brutal but I've done it in other cars without the drastic difference.

    Great video, Ryan. I loved the segment you had talking about braking/throttle and how they relate to weight transfer and rotation, especially on loose surfaces. Reminds me of when I was a kid teaching myself how to AWD drift on snow in my '03 Forester 5 speed manual, and figuring out that throttle put the weight on the rear and rotated it through corners. I loved how that Forester handled on snow/gravel as it was (I think, if I remember correctly) a 50-50 front-rear power split in those older model year manuals. It was just so predictable.
    Also looking forward to seeing your tests of this Crosstrek Wilderness in the snow. This will also be the first Minnesota winter for my '23 Outback Wilderness, and your "adventure" videos were a big help in making my purchase! The snow/ice up here in Minnesota is no joke!

But I've done them in my older Forester which only has 7.5 inches of ground clearance. But at least I have a full size spare, and I've damaged a tire couple of times on roads like that and had to drive out on the spare. Great road/off-road review, Ryan. I look forward to updates during your possession of this Crosstrek. I own a '22 Forester Premium which I love. I thought about the Wilderness model, but my off-road driving does not warrant a Wilderness and I prefer the better MPG -- recently my highway MPG from Yosemite National Park to Los Angeles was 34 MPG and it was the same driving up to Yosemite.

    I've been watching a lot of your Subaru videos, especially Crosstrek videos after finding your channel about 2 years or so ago.
    I currently have a 2013 Crosstrek. It serves my needs well, but I keep getting the urge to upgrade to one with the 2.5L.

    • @eskieman3948
      @eskieman3948 Год назад

      There is a noticeable improvement in performance with the 2.5L. IMHO, I think it's mostly due to the additional torque provided vs. the increased HP. CVTs do respond better to additional torque.... that's why a Outback XT is definitely more enjoyable to drive over the the 2.5L - many people wouldn't notice the driving difference between a regular auto transmission and a CVT in the XT (the wife didn't compared to our '10 Chevy Malibu w/6spd auto).

    Subaru really needs to put a front camera on all Wilderness models if not all of their cars with AWD. They could also put an altimeter on their cars that have GPS technology. It is just software my Garmin watch has an altimeter, and it doesn't cost anywhere near as much as a Subaru.

    • @drivingsports

      Not everyone has a Garmin watch, and people with Subarus are often in the mountains. My Outback has 4 or 5 compasses. They could put an altimeter where one of those compasses is.

      $200 phones have 3 cameras on them that don't get used, a $40,000 car should have 2 cameras on them that really could prevent the car from being damaged.

      It's very disappointing that Subaru decided to dumb down the CTW by leaving off front approach camera, and full size spare. I've never had the former but with small spare it's only offroad "capable". It also, unfairly, marks the Crosstrek as something Forester & Outback owners are enjoying laughing at.

    Ryan, I can't tell you how much I appreciated this video and all your hard work in creating it. You answered a lot of my questions about the CTW except possibly one. When you were driving the steep mountain grades in Utah, Idaho & Montana (6%, for example), was it able to maintain the speed limit (80 MPH)?

      @@drivingsports Good to know, I currently own an OBW (came from a 2.0L Crosstrek). I'm in a quandary, however, as I love the extra HP and torque of the OBW but like the size of the CTW more. Since it's always just me in the car on my cross-country road trips, it sounds like a CTW will work just fine. I really enjoy your long road-trip videos like this one - especially since I was just on a lot of those same roads as I traveled from MN to AZ (via Boise).

      @@MNsaintif you wanted to do some Overlanding/Car Camping I think the OBW would be more comfortable and better on the highway because of the longer wheelbase. That is the whole reason I bought my 2005 OBXT manual to set up as an Overlander

      @MNsaint Год назад

      @@J.Young808 Yes, you bring up an excellent point. On my recent 2400 mile road trip, the OBW performed flawlessly. It was very comfortable, rode well and had plenty of power. In fact, sometimes I didn't even know I was climbing in elevation since the car showed no signs of working harder. I really do love my OBW and will most likely stay with it. I just have to get used to the larger size since I drove a Crosstrek for almost four years. Thanks for your reply.

    Traded a 24 Honda crv touring hybrid for the 24 Subaru crosstrek wilderness. All smiles no regret. Only have 400 miles on it so far but just love it. This is my second Subaru. Now I wish I still had my 87 Subaru xt. At 33.500 for the wilderness it's a good buy. At 45k no way don't care what gimmicks you add. Next month Black Hills SD bound. Going to check out the orv park east of Rapid City and play in the Black Hills. Got 2 get more miles on it before the trip. Warranty is off at 60k then the build begins. Ordered a rtt for next summer. Can't wait for bumpers and winch roof rack and rear locker. Maybe aftermarket turbo. Always stressed about time and miles on Warranty. Not this one. I just want it over with so I can build it. Great video liked and subbed
