The wilderness crosstrek doesn't need a power lift gate, its just another thing to break, maybe on a more roadie version but no on the one where you might damage it and it'll add cost.
Absolutely agree. The rear hatch on the Crosstrek is extremely easy to open and close. Having it mechanized with electric motors would be a bad thing - just adds complexity and cost.
Yeah, I don't really understand why a power lift gate is so important to some, that it's a deal breaker. We managed to go about 100 years without power lift gates, with no complaints.
They should totally do a wrx wilderness edition. Rally car vibes. Also bring back the manual… the cvt drone is brutal and such a turn off in an otherwise sporty fun vehicle. Had a 2018 wrx… one of the better vehicles I owned.
My 23 WRX is my own attempt at that. 1.5” lift, falken wild peaks on 17s - it’s a go everywhere rig I for my hunting/fishing endeavors while still being incredibly fun to drive compared to the Outback Wilderness I traded in for it. Plus manual ❤
I own the new Crosstrek in Australia (I'm American, but now live there) and I find it interesting what is different about the Aussie one to the US one. We have a forward camera as standard, along with 360 degrees cameras that can be used while driving and offroading, but we don't get the Wilderness here. I see the camera button is a blank on the Wilderness too, where all models here can activate the cameras there. We also have a few things in the infotainment that are different and such.
I'm considering buying a wireless license plate frame embedded "back up camera" to put on the front, if I end up trying some more technical stuff in the future. A front camera seems like a somewhat cheap addition that wouldn't have hurt to include though.
I own a 22 Crosstrek Sport, and if they would put a turbo into one of these I would trade mine in an instant. Living in snow country I can say this is a great snow car that got me through a lot of deep snow this past winter.
I have a 2020 Onyx XT. Absolutey love the car especially the turbo. I haven't had any issues at all driving and it can climb some gnarly mountain trails like a 4runner. Perfect for the PacNW. Simple, down and dirty fun for our miles and miles of forest roads. That is why it seems every third car you see here is a Subaru. Thanks for the review on my next car.
Sat in this at the dealership other day. Exact same model. Very comfortable. The lift is great for a taller person like me at 6‘7“. I really wish that Subaru would adopt the center stack and gearshift and cupholders for the outback as there’s much more room and functionality versus the current set up. Great car and I told my partner that it would be fun to have as a sidecar after we pay both of our Ascents.
I got my eye on the sport trim but after seeing this wilderness trim i am willing to spend the 2k difference on the price just by the look itself. I will probably never use it for off roading. I just like the look. My only question is the difference in the ride on the freeway of the wilderness compare to the sport. Is it tolerable for a long drive. Thanks
The side profile is its most appealing look. The green, black and bronze are nice contrasting colors. The turbocharged engine with a NON-cvt would make this a perfect vehicle to buy.
The point of this vehicle is a cheap, reliable drivetrain that can go off-road. They upgraded the infotainment as that is an important factor to buyers…. But everything else keeps the price low. Only item I do agree however that the car could really use a more powerful engine option.
I ordered one in June, just got it back in October. I had a 21 premium and I can’t tell you how much better this 24 wilderness is. The 21 was great but wow I love this new one. So much smoother and the off-road capabilities of this is leaps and bounds above my last one. Great vehicle
I think the biggest problem with the Crosstrex getting up that hill was that it needs better A/T’s on it. I’m going to purchase a Crosstrex Wilderness soon but I’m going to immediately replace those tires with better A/T’s.
Here’s some info I found the answer I found for without mirror and 80” with but I know that is impossible because my Honda fit measures 80” exact with mirrors that’s what I got with me and another person measuring even Honda fit without mirrors is 60” so on average each mirror has to be around 10” but then Subaru says width without mirrors is 71/72 so it would be around 91/92 but I just wanted to be sure before I even waste time driving to a dealer to look at em and waste my day now I just need accurate even if it’s just a regular crosstrek for 2024 for closer estimate because 91” is bigger than most single car garage doors or close to
Looked at one of these, and it lines up very closely in price with the Forester Wilderness. Given that, I may opt for the Forester because of the huge difference in outward visibility. Also, if you have a dog, you may want him to stand or sit comfortably. Again, advantage Forester.
I dislike that at the base price of ~33k after destination it does not include power seats. And the only way to get them is a $2k package. $35k is quite an expensive crosstrek.
Funny all the negative comments about the Wilderness model. We love that it’s different & that why we picked one up. Yes needs a little more HP but ok. The horn just outright sucks. Belongs on a pedal bike. Great small capable , reliable SUV vehicle.
Car's not for me, but I get to say again you are hands down the best of the large crowd of folks playing car review here. Thanks yet again for your superb work.
OMG! That was my only "don't like" on my new 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness too! The horn! The absolute most puny/pathetic horn ever! LOL. Other than that, I'm loving everything about it!
I enjoy your reviews and very informative 👍. I've owned subarus in the past and I've always wanted a Crosstrek since their introduction and because of your review on the Crosstrek Wilderness and testing, I decided to purchase a Crosstrek Wilderness. I decided to go with the Ice Silver Metallic 😎.
Subaru should definitely consider building a faster Crosstrack version with around 300hp to fulfill the missing Impreza hatchback and could compete with the VW Golf R under sub $45k but with some rally/off-road capabilities. That could be an epic all-rounder car in the subcompact segment.
I was gonna get this car. Now I’m not sure if it’s worth the price tag. The regular crosstrek seems to be almost as capable. With a lift and some aggressive tires, they might even be on par with the stock wilderness. And the lift and tires probably won’t cost 10k?
Asking anybody here. If I drive a Crosstrek Wilderness in sandy environments a lot, will sand get on my engine, serpentine belt, brakes, filters etc. and shorten the life of my engine and entire car?
Power lift gates, 360 cameras, cooled seats, etc… are why “cars are so expensive these days”. Use our arms and eyes and live with ‘just’ AC. Though the lack of a vent in the back is unfortunate. Just swapped over from our 2012 Impreza, and that lack of vents in the rear for the dog and the fact that the cup holders don’t fit a Nalgene (seriously… remember who the target audience is Subaru- Our water and sticker collection vessels must be accommodated) are the two minor gripes I have. Plus I dislike the eyesight stuff- I can monitor cruise control on my own, thank you very much…
It’s a fine dirt roader or soft roader, but there should be a distinction between cars like this and vehicles with lockers and low range transfer cases which are basic requirements for doing anything beyond that dirt road. Gunning the crosstrek up that hill to overcome the lack of lockers and low range is also the kind of driving that will likely break suspension parts. One look at the suspension parts and you can see they are not really designed for off road. Nothing against the soft roader category, but it’s not an offroader in any real sense of the word. All the cladding in the world can’t make it so.
If only it was a hybrid… it would be great! Likewise, if the Toyota RAV4 woodland got some these capabilities… skid plates, transmission cooler for higher towing capacity, higher ground clearance, etc.; that would be a great vehicle also.
I think its a price thing. With the Crosstrek they need to keep it entry level. Adding a hybrid system on top of the off road “goodies” would just bring it to $40k which would be to pricey here. I think Subaru can squeeze out some mpgs here though if they aren’t going to raise the power figures. Getting this to average 30 should have been the goal without should be 35 mpg.
That’s practicality to the max, no turbo, no powered lift gate, no this, no that,…that’s out of experience from drivers or teams getting stuck in the middle of nowhere, it minimizes things to fix on the go until they reach a real mechanic shop. But I bet it can connect with the Ultra2 watch.
I test drove one of these a few weeks ago. The paddle shifters are a huge mistake. They take up way too much space on the tiny steering wheel. And on top of that, it’s a CVT transmission. Why is there even anything like this? That makes you feel like you’re shifting? It’s a joke.

Good review Sir, thankyou. It would be almost perfect if they offered a manual version of this vehicle. Although, I'd probably be the only person who'd buy it so I get why it's not available. Truly don't get why a "offroad ish" vehicle costing around 35k doesn't come with a full sized spare. Huge miss for Subaru.
Hi Subaru, cladding, orange accents, and un updated powertrains do not make for a rugged vehicle, but irresponsibly makes for someone to think that. Put more power in it, provide drivetrain updates, and then we'll talk. Signed, Anyone who wants to do serious exploration without fear of damage.
If it doesn't do what you think it needs to, go buy something that fulfills your needs. Nope? ... because I'll guarantee you it'll cost more than this will new.
I want to like Subarus but they’re so so to me. Not bad but not to die for either. I feel like if they didn’t come with AWD as standard equipment, they wouldn’t sell like they do with blowing head gaskets and all.
Put the power seats on all models without having to upgrade to a sunroof. This is b.s., Subaru. Actually, you can keep the manual seats, but at least make the front of the seats near the thighs adjustable and able to be raised so that tall people aren’t suffering. Why not just make the manual adjustments the same as the power adjustments?
Beefy? It's no Rubicon, Raptor, TRD Tacoma/4Runner, or the like. I really like my Crosstrek, but it's no serious offroader...not even with skidpkates, ATs, a winch, or even uf I added traction diffs and a lift. It might make a decent rally car, if it had a turbo and the 6spd, or even a decent overlander, but it'll never be a decent rockcrawler, driftbuster, or mudbogger. It just can't run big tires well, and the plastic bumpers are vulnerable.
As a 2nd gen BRZ owner and former Forester XT owner, I'd sooner buy a new Prius. More power(!), two whole seconds faster to 60mph and with the same cargo space while using half the fuel. I really don't understand the appeal of this thing when you could buy a bigger, just as capable and feature packed car for less, from the same brand. S'just dumb.
Sofyan, it's a crossover not an SUV. Also 1/2" lift isn't going to do anything for offroad- capability. You would need at least a couple inch lift to make a difference. It is really capable though!
Reduce the infotainment screen size, offer a standard transmission and STI trim package. The Crosstrek is a cool platform but in typical Subaru fashion this car is severely underpowered and overloaded with techno junk.
Great Review! I have owned over 14 Subaru's since 2006. They are very reliable...in the snow as well, but I find the "extra" body cladding on the Crosstrek Wilderness hideous. I will keep my 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which is more capable off road with a real rear locking diff., V6 and an actual transmission(not a CVT). Cheers!😁
@@CCANGEL333 I have bought all of my cars. Since 2006: 14 Subaru's(all models), 2 Smart cars, a Ford Ranger, a Ford Bronco Sport 2 Jeeps, and a Dodge Challenger. I usually keep them for about two years. If there are things I don't like about them, then I get rid of them. Cheers!
Lol, you know nothing "0" about reliability if youve bought something every 2 or 3 years. I've bought 4 new vehicles since 1998 and I still own 3 of them. One of them being a '21 Crosstrek Limited.
I don't know why they call these SUV's? They should call these lifted hatchbacks. Or are hatchbacks essentially called SUV's now? Sofia did you forget to turn on the X-mode? Also X-mode Deep turns off the moment your wheel spins over 25. At the end there you were driving with it turned off. Leave it in X-mode 1 They have the Levorge STI in other countries which would be nice if US brought this over.

I got an alpine green crosstrek wilderness and it should be in soon. I’m from New Jersey and after taxes/fees it was a little over $37,000.

Ventilated seats weigh more and mpgs in this segment is relatively important to remain competitive.

They, Subaru Board killed it because it was not "sell"; why they would spend time on a losing money? They made huge profits manufacturing Aircrafts and Parts for Boeing and DoD Japan.
And since Toyoda bought 20% of Swap shares with Subaru; they leave the higher-end or Hybrids for Toyoda; and focus on these nimble Sectors that sell good to Outback Terrains Aussie and Asian Countries; where they made good profits and live Subaru North America for USA to do what best with Market Demands.
A SVX 3.3 h6 then was better mileage than this CrossTrek, and the SVX had more HP, and Torques than an Outback and CTrek, but will not be able to go to the Wilderness. They then put the Engines/ Upgrade version 3.6R to the Outback and Forester and sold/sell as other Segment of higher-end Wilderness Buyers.
Cheers,
They did , dealers could not keep them on the lots , as soon as they came in they were sold . I ordered one in 2022 in a
manual and i have gotten as high as 43 mpg with it@@truckercowboyed2638
I don’t get the obsession with the back up camera quality… you just need to see if there’s something behind you.
Charge more for the color green. Perfect
They should’ve just went with all cladding and no paint that way ❤
Gets stuck twice, not to impressive, why do cvts die on hills?
I have a 2023 limited and i really like this new version not enough to trade mine in but i think Subaru did a great job
Please release a wrx Crosstrek
Hi Subaru, cladding, orange accents, and un updated powertrains do not make for a rugged vehicle, but irresponsibly makes for someone to think that. Put more power in it, provide drivetrain updates, and then we'll talk. Signed, Anyone who wants to do serious exploration without fear of damage.
To be fair they did add a lower drive ratio and transmission cooler. That should actually help quite a bit
If it doesn't do what you think it needs to, go buy something that fulfills your needs.
Nope? ... because I'll guarantee you it'll cost more than this will new.
Please show roof light controls, sunroof buttons, headlight controls clearly for ffs..Jeez!
I want to like Subarus but they’re so so to me. Not bad but not to die for either. I feel like if they didn’t come with AWD as standard equipment, they wouldn’t sell like they do with blowing head gaskets and all.
Head gaskets haven't been a concern since the F-series engine was introduced in 2010.
182hp with a full tank of gas, 4 people and their luggage = 100hp loss
Take a 3.6 Forester and/or Outback W then you have 300 hp...
it badly needs the turbo engine from the Outback
Flicks the liftgate up like it was nothing but complains about not having a power liftgate 😑😂
Powerliftgates are a waste of time
@@deadpoop_0279 they could be very annoying sometimes.
The opening scene is too wide. Get a little closer next time.
thanks
Subaru is so serious about off-roading yet they give their cars no power
Full send! Nice
Don’t feel bad Sofyan. They didn’t make it up either. 28:27
Sofyan, it's a crossover not an SUV. Also 1/2" lift isn't going to do anything for offroad- capability. You would need at least a couple inch lift to make a difference. It is really capable though!
An old GL or Brat would have made it up that hill first try!
Reduce the infotainment screen size, offer a standard transmission and STI trim package. The Crosstrek is a cool platform but in typical Subaru fashion this car is severely underpowered and overloaded with techno junk.
I like the color
Great Review! I have owned over 14 Subaru's since 2006. They are very reliable...in the snow as well, but I find the "extra" body cladding on the Crosstrek Wilderness hideous. I will keep my 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which is more capable off road with a real rear locking diff., V6 and an actual transmission(not a CVT). Cheers!😁
Why have you purchased or leased fourteen subarus in such a short period of time?
@@CCANGEL333 I have bought all of my cars. Since 2006: 14 Subaru's(all models), 2 Smart cars, a Ford Ranger, a Ford Bronco Sport 2 Jeeps, and a Dodge Challenger. I usually keep them for about two years. If there are things I don't like about them, then I get rid of them. Cheers!
@@db1566 You'll need a Jeep to pull you out of a ditch. LOL!
@@db1566 The Cherokee was built in Michigan, the 3.2 V6 was built in Illinois. :)
Lol, you know nothing "0" about reliability if youve bought something every 2 or 3 years.
I've bought 4 new vehicles since 1998 and I still own 3 of them. One of them being a '21 Crosstrek Limited.
The horn does sound cheap on my 2021 Crosstrek 😂
I don't know why they call these SUV's? They should call these lifted hatchbacks. Or are hatchbacks essentially called SUV's now?
Sofia did you forget to turn on the X-mode? Also X-mode Deep turns off the moment your wheel spins over 25. At the end there you were driving with it turned off. Leave it in X-mode 1
They have the Levorge STI in other countries which would be nice if US brought this over.
Rear headlights look ugly. Touchscreen infotainment laggy as always. Ugh.
