    As an avid camper/backpacker/hiker/mountain biker/kayaker who does so with an awd cadillac ats, I can confidently say that the standard crosstrek would be all the offroad capability I would ever need to enjoy my hobbies. As it stands, the ats has never failed to get me to where I need to go, but there have been times where the gravel roads would get very bad and I'd have to pick my line very carefully to make it through. I'd be that guy who gets to the trailhead and turns heads because every other vehicle there is a truck or "off roader" suv, then I roll up in my caddy lol. The reason I don't bother getting something more capable is because even though I get out for an adventure every single month, 95% of my time is still spent on road. Fuel efficieny, comfort, and on road performance still far outweigh my need to sacrifice those things for really nothing more than peace of mind when the road occasionaly gets rough. And for reference, I live in michigan and still go winter camping in the up and to the remote areas of our beautiful state, so dont assume that the only reason my awd sedan can do those things is because i live somewhere like florida lol.
    Tldr; the standard crosstrek is all the capability most people would ever need, even if they live an active outdoors lifestyle.

    Ryan, Thanks for pushing the Crosstrek Wilderness through this trail. Since the first time I saw the preproduction car, I wanted to figure out how to reduce the lower lip. You have just proven to me that in needs to be removed for better clearance. It's a little shovel, of course it's there for getting air into the CVT cooler so ... trade offs. Anyway, Thanks for a great video and improving the proving grounds!

      Makes sense. I live in colorado, and our merge lanes have a short red light for each car. There is no way you could get up to 83 to merge. The lights space traffic out so you do t need to speed.

    It looks like the biggest challenge for it was the loose dirt, which would challenge most non-hardcore vehicles. It would be interesting to see it redo this course in a year when the trail is hard packed. It will still have the angles and dips, but the loose soil should harden up.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 9 месяцев назад +4

      It would also be interesting if Ryan had funds to swap the tires out for more offroad type tires and see the difference. Those tires on that car are nothing more than all season tires...they're less aggressive than the plain old M&S tires on my 2WD Ford Ranger LOL.

You'll find that it cuts power and limits throttle even before it tells you (blinky lights and sounds) or actually stops the car. Drivability goes way up with it off. Would like to see you repeat some of the same more challenging sections with it turned off. You might just find that the Crosstrek moves through those sections much more easily.

    Thanks for the excavating and Crosstrek review DS - here in Tasmania I’ve owned 12 Subarus over many years - in fact we have the highest proportion of Subarus per capital than anywhere else in the world - I am pleased to see that Subaru have reintroduced the analogue coolant temperature gauge after removing it in 2008 which I suspect is why so many have overheated and destroyed engines because a simple red warning light like I had in my 2010 XT Forester meant it was too late because the engine was cooked - we also get a lot of CVT failures like Nissan’s XTrail so I’d like to see Subaru/Toyota reintroduce a conventional automatic transmission as Nissan has now done with the new Pathfinder - Crosstrek Wilderness has good ground clearance and looks great with all that reintroduced body cladding to protect fenders etc that all started with my original 1997 Forester LTD which came with 280mm of ground clearance - we have blackberry plagues here because some British idiot decided they wanted something to eat on their bushwalks.

      @@procrastinator1842 yes P nothing like a manual Subie - while I work on my auto diesel Hilux project for 1 mth I’m driving my friend’s manual Subie and loving it - I wish I’d kept my 1990 Liberty wagon as a runaround - some one is trying to sell their 2013 Subaru Forester with the dreaded CVT for $3500 on Carsales Australia - it’s bizarre that there’s cost over $38000 to buy just 10 years ago and besides the consistent CVT failures and over $8k to replace the rest of the vehicle is perfect. - I don’t think they’ll bring back the conventional auto transmission but Nissan has learnt from the XTrail debacle (global law suit) and reintroduced the conventional auto in the new Pathfinder.

    Pretty cool test track for these CUVs. Although my criticism would be the ditch might be a little to deep for CUVS, seeing that the Crosstrek is such a compact vehicle. I imagine every vehicle will scratch their front fenders on this section. Also the terrain is still very fresh, almost like loose sand in some section, which is tough. Needs some rain to pack it down. When you have to use the locker on your Ford Tremor on one section, that means it's too much for crossovers.

A bit struggling here and there, but to be fair, I wouldn't mistake what you built for a road 😂 I've been all over Alligator River in our Forester, and nowhere there are the roads anywhere close to what you got. But it's nice to know that if I go nuts entirely - like you, Wilderness will see me through. 🐺👍

    In Europe that have a Toyota Yaris Cross with an AWD system and traction control system done so poorly that 2WD vehicles surpass it. Too bad I couldn't see one try to tackle this course. 😅

    • @pablomoreno1999
      @pablomoreno1999 9 месяцев назад

      The Yaris cross AWD is a hybrid and an embarrassment to AWD. It gets a 5hp motor at the back. It costs 30k and even with snow and trail mode. The fwd petrol version will perform better in rough conditions.... I garantee it wouldn't even make the entrance to this course...

  • @arkos55

    It’s a great little car, which is why I bought one for our daughter, but having spent a little time underneath one of these, I would caution against anyone thinking to really beat one of these up off road on a regular basis because the suspension while a bit tougher than some, just isn’t built for real off road. Doing a hundred yards of rocks and logs is one thing. Holding up over years of this is different, and it won’t. Just not made for it. Washboarded dirts roads and such, sure. But do this kind of thing a lot and you’ll be in for some repairs soon enough. Be aware of its limitations and it’s a fantastic car.

    There is a big debate between Subaru owners if thay need X Mode deep mud & snow ,thay clame it will be enough to cancel traction control...
    my opinion it will not make the Subaru move on.

    I think adding hybrid power to these cars will make them much better. Better low-end torque and efficiency while crawling. Not to mention more accurate TC with electric motors. Clearly these cars are best on flatter surfaces but it is good to see how far it can go in extreme cases. Not bad at all. I'm sold on Subaru AWD.
