  • Hello,
    Welcome to my channel 😊.
So here is my first ever #sewalong that I have shared with you. I really hope that you have enjoyed watching me sew my first ever Tilly and the Buttons Indigo dress.
I have made this in a size 4.
My body measurements for reference at the time of filming this are :
    Bust 36
    Waist 30
    Hips 37
    I am 5ft 6"
I would really like to post future sew alongs. If there are any garments that you are particularly interested in seeing me sew, or any details that would be helpful, let me know in the comments.
If you would like to follow me over on my instagram account, here is the link :
    devon.threa...
In the video I mentioned that I used a loop turned from Guthrie Ghani and also a hot hemmer. Here are the links to both :

Thanks so much again for watching.
Hope you all have a good week.
    Take care
    Angela xx

Despite being locked in with my husband and son, I feel quite lonely and sewing is a pretty lonely hobby. So, sitting and watching you sew and hearing your tips makes me feel very comfortable and almost as though you are a friend. 😊

This is a reality TV sew a long! 1) it doesn't always get done in one day 2) we substitute instructions with the techniques that work for us 3) Try on a you go 4) I also get my hip daughter's honest input before moving forward 5) Seam ripper always comes out 6) loop turner has mood swings 7) Ease is an amazing mystery 8) Hems get adjusted. The dress looks great. A slightly shorter skirt hem would look cute too but it's fine as is for your needs.

Bless you - thank you - Yes doesn't always go to plan - this is definitely real!!! 😂🙈
Thank you so much - I really really appreciate your comments. I have to be honest I am already wondering about making it slightly shorter! I will have a think and wear it a few times first.
      Thank you 🥰

Hello Angela, I have had this Tilly & her Buttons pattern now for two years and have been too frightened to actually open it. Today I finally cut out some fabric. I did that a bit wrong and didn't quite have enough and nearly chucked the whole lot into the bin. However, this evening I found your sew along video and I may not give up. I will follow your channel. I would like to make a swimming costume one day.

Hi, I really enjoyed the whole video from start to finish, the one thing I would be interested in would be watching how you go about making the paper pattern pieces from the original pattern pieces so that you dont actually have to cut into the originals, if you get my gist. I know that people make their own paper pieces to save the originals but have never done it myself, so that would be great to see, thanks for the video...

    • @DevonThreadTales

Aaahh - ok, so I either print the pdf's so I csn literally cut them, and re print if needed. However, if I have a paper pattern, I use tracing paper and either that you buy on the roll or Burda pattern paper. Hope that helps 🥰

I primarily watch sew-alongs to see if I can pick up any tips. I've been sewing since I was 7 years old (mid- 1970s) when I received a "Kids" sewing machine for Christmas.
I also appreciate when we are told the measurements of the person sewing the garment. It is helpful to see how the pattern fits.
From your sew-along, I will take away the putting interfacing on pocket edges to keep them nice and crisp. I have done this for years when putting a zipper in, (I've never been a fan of the invisible zipper) but it never occured to me to do the same for a pocket! Thank you for that!
P.S. Your daughters made to right call about the flounce and the waist tie placement.

I really love your channel and this video. I have left my dressmaking and have concentrated on my quilt making and knitting over the last I don't know how many years. I used to make everything for myself, two girls and then sewed for my five grandchildren too. However, I have a new great grand daughter and have started making dresses and rompers for her. Watching this has prompted me to make something for myself again. I am going to make the Indigo dress exactly as you have - the tie and sleeves make it for me. So I will let you know how it goes. Off to search for some fabric now the shops have opened up again. Thanks for your calmness, great instruction and encouragement.

I like watching how each individual step is done as well as any special techniques, and the chatter while they are doing it. That way I can learn how things are done, but if I already know that, it will still be fun to watch because of the chatter. Some only have the sewing, which is great when you want to know the techniques and steps, but I don't bother watching them if I don't need to know that at the moment or aren't making that pattern. If they make it interesting by chatting while they are doing it, I watch even if what they are sewing isn't important to me at the moment.

    • @sew_So_beautiful
      @sew_So_beautiful 3 года назад +1

That being said, i dont like so much chatter that the person forgets to say what they are doing and why. The way you did it was perfect. Any sidetracked chatter could be added when nothing important in the sewing is going on, like while pinning, cutting out, or straight stitching long seams, or at a pause between steps.

Thanks for this sewalong Angela, I think you made it very clear and easy to follow as well as showing your warm personality. I would agree with you that sizing is one of the most difficult aspects when planning a make and I always like to know people’s measurements and what size they made, any grading etc to help me..... have made a few tents in the four years that I’ve been sewing! I’ve had the Indigo pattern a while but wasn’t sure it was for me - possibly another tent and too old for frills - but yours looks so good with the ties you have inspired me to have a go. I like the way you did it over a few days - that’s real life!

Really enjoyed this Angela, you are a natural teacher. Loved all the extra helpful tips you included and your attention to detail when explaining them. I made this dress last month but didn’t feel ready to include the pockets but now having watched you explain how to do them I will give them ago. Your comment about too much fabric made me laugh as I too thought that and shortened my sleeves and dress length at the end. Personally I thought it was easier to see you and what you were doing with the blind closed although it was lovely to see sunshine. I’m sure this was a lot of work for you but the end result was excellent and I’m sure will be helpful to and enjoyed by many. Looking forward to when you have time to do another sew along 🧵 in the future. Thank you! X

Thanks so much for this sew along. I really enjoyed it and found it very helpful. As a beginner, it helps to see techniques done all the way through. Sometimes, the instructions and a picture aren't enough. Also loved your tips and tricks along the way and plan to use some. I'd love to see more sew alongs. Perhaps a shirt, since collars, cuffs, and button plackets are intimidating for someone new to garment making. I particularly like to see what goes into choosing the right size to make. Lizzie B has two great videos I've watched on fitting and choosing the right size to sew. I'd definitely recommend you check them out. Cheers!

This looks really lovely on you and you really suit blue. It will be lovely in the summer and looks especially nice with pumps for that perfect summer cool look. I know you have said in a previous video that you tend to avoid blue because of your school uniform being blue, but it really is your colour. Enjoyed this video and like you it is good to get a idea of sizing that others make. I also like to see any tips like the one you did by stitching in the ditch for the shoulder facing. I have never heard of this and really it makes a lot of sense and will be doing it in the future. Plus I like listening to you chatting about sewing and find it relaxing. xx
By the way when you tried the top part on without sleeves, it really suited you with no sleeves.

Thank you so much - I agree, I think this will be perfect in the summer, lovely and cool!
Thank you - I really do avoid royal blue normally for this reason, but I am getting more used to it, and I actually think I love it a bit more now 😂
I'm so glad you found it helpful and relaxing. That's really what I want these sew alongs to be, informative and friendly! 😊
He he - I think a no sleeve version would be nice.

Hi Angela. I’ve just found you on RUclips and loved this sew along. I’ve made the indigo twice and although I love the looser style I will definitely add waist ties next time. I love watching sew alongs, especially if it’s with a pattern I am thinking of sewing. I also love hearing how other sewers make changes to the pattern. Really great video. Can’t wait to watch more 😊

Really useful sew along thank you. Loved the hints and tips and honestly as someone new to it the construction side is already helping my brain understand some of the patterns I've attempted but got stuck on. You've done a great job and I look forward to seeing more. Thank you.

Well done with your first sew -a -long. I thought you gave useful tips and demonstrated it well. I really watched this because I made the Indigo a while ago but have never worn it. I’m not sure why really but think it overwhelms me! I have the long sleeves and the frill, and waist ties, which I think could be thinner seeing yours,so have been tempted to cut the sleeves shorter and maybe take the frill off as like you think it might be just too much fabric. Thank you 😁

Hia Rust - thank you so much, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it. It's a unique style isn't it, and I think if you're not used to wearing that style (as I am not) it can take a bit of getting used to. Why not try on your dress, and pin the frill out of the way etc, see what you feel about it then. Take some photo's of yourself as it is, and more when you pin it up. That way you can look at yourself properly in a picture. Or better still f you have someone at home, possibly ask them to film you doing a twirl in each?!?!?
I hope that helps - and thank you so much again 🥰

Thank you Angela - I really can't believe my luck lately. I had decided to sew a Nina Lee Carnaby dress for my daughter for Christmas, and found that Sew little time had done a sew along that really helped. I've had the Indigo pattern for quite a while (for myself), but had ummed and arred over the style and the size to do. I made a toille at the beginning of this week (used an old piece of needle cord that really didn't work well), but did inform me that I needed to size down. Lost heart with it, then I saw your sew along, and bam! Totally inspired again. Your sew along was absolutely just the right amount of everything with some really helpful tips and tricks. Your dress looks absolutely lovely, fabric is just perfect. So thank you so much again. Looking forwards to the next Vlog. Not meaning to nag, but if you were to do another sew along at anytime do you think it could maybe include the little notch trick that you use for overlocking in the round. Hugs from East Sussex. xxx

@@DevonThreadTales Thank you. I went ahead and made another toille in a cotton lawn that I had in a weird kind of Aztec fabric that I can't even remember where and when I got it. I wasn't super keen on the fabric so wasn't too worried about messing up, I'm soooo happy with the dress, I love it. My super trendy and fussy daughter said that the fabric (she kind of shares my stash) looked a bit rubbish as fabric, but is really lovely made up. I can't thank you enough for giving me the inspiration. I was going to make another in some lovely viscose that I had for Christmas, but I think I'm up for more of a challenge now - onwards and upwards. Just want to add that your Vlog is so upbeat and inspiring - I'm a fanatical knitter, so also love to see ?Amy's knits oh and your's too. x

It’s so funny- but after reading the comment about adding frills-I so agree that simple and classic can work best sometimes-especially with that style dress! Although I’m rather feminine (a ruffle and lace girl) in my home decor style -I tend to be more classic in my clothing style. I like to soften or expose my feminine side in dress by color and fabric choice -not necessarily style choice. I love to use color, pattern, and texture to reveal interest rather than lots of structure . I’ve always admired the Japanese and Swedish styles for this reason-tell the story simply and add visual interest in fabric choices and maybe add a few charming trims! It makes for simple, quick, and comfortable sewing and hides a multitude of sin! Just wanted to share my thoughts!❤️🧵✂️

Yaaay Angela, that was great 👏 I really enjoyed it. This is very much the sort of sew along I like. You talked us through the instructions and added your own tips which was very helpful. I enjoyed your witty asides and I also liked the fact that it took 3 days because many of us, like you, have other domestic/work commitment, so you showed just what can be done in the time available. I didn’t notice any problems with lighting either, I think the whole shoot was very clear. My style is similar to yours and I bought this pattern in a moment of over enthusiasm as I’d seen so many lovely versions. Since then it has remained untouched 😆. Your sew along has convinced me it’s definitely worth a go. It suits you Angela and the sleeves and length look good. Im looking forward to hearing what you think after you’ve worn it a few times x
