  • Hello,
    Welcome to my channel 😊.
    So here is my second #sewalong and today I am sewing the Tilly and the Button #freyadress from the #stretchbook.
    I have made this in a size 4.
    The fabric I used was a really soft knit fabric called melange, that I purchased from Minerva.com. Here is a link to the fabric - they have other colours too, and I think I may be buying more colours to make this dress again 😂 :
    www.minerva.com/mp/1195055/me...
    My body measurements for reference at the time of filming this are :
    Bust 36
    Waist 30
    Hips 37
    I am 5ft 6"
    I would really like to post future sew alongs. If there are any garments that you are particularly interested in seeing me sew, or any details that would be helpful, let me know in the comments.
    If you would like to follow me over on my instagram account, here is the link :
    devon.threa...
    In the video I mentioned that I used a hot hemmer. Here is the link to this:
    guthrie-ghani.co.uk/shop/clov...
    Thanks so much again for watching.
    Hope you all have a good week.
    Take care
    Angela xx

    Hi Angela. Thank you for another great tutorial. I am eternally grateful. You and other people who take the time to do these for us should be paid by the pattern companies and fabric stores. There are loads of patterns in my stash and I look at them and think, there’s no way I’m attempting that but if I see a tutorial and the person has given loads of help (which you do), then I’m more likely to buy the pattern. Thank you so much. Also the dress and fabric look great on you. X

    Love the sew along 🥰 I have got Tilly and the Button stretch book.About to cut out the Freya dress. But I will use the pencil skirt pattern instead as I like a fitted garment. But the colour and the style really suits you. A really good tip about cutting out the small piece. I have got a cover stitch machine, and I need to practice as well. Great demonstration love all the tips. Just love this dress and the colour is just gorgeous. The idea of the list is such a great idea, it makes sure that no time is wasted, plus it's good to know where we are up to when going back to a project. I often prepare my overlocker and sewing machine in the run up to starting a project. There is nothing worse than having to stop what your doing to do this. Sometimes overlockers play up at times and don't want to play.

    Hi Angela, loved your sewalong and the dress looks great. I have a Brother 4000D which has a select button for twin needles. This automatically resets the tension. I use a mid to wide set twin needle and lengthen the stitch length to 4 and it works perfectly every time. The machine is now over 15 years old and a big investment at the time but has been worth every penny! Happy stitching. Caroline R-G 😀

    Quick tip: with either a loo roll tube or paper towel tube cut into sections, slice into one end a bit deeper than the width of your stay tape. Slip one end of the stay tape into once notch then wind the stay tape onto the tube so it lays flat, using tape or making another slice into the tube slip the free end in. Keeps it flat and neat! The rusty red looks really good on you, so does the Freya!

    Hi Angela - thanks for this tutorial Really lovely dress on you. I have the Tilly book but I’ve only made the Frankie Tee so far. You’ve just inspired me to have a go at this dress. I’ll need to lengthen both the body and the skirt since I’m 5’10”. I also like to use a twin needle but I bought a wider one (Smetz extra wide 6,0/100 - it has the red top). I also lengthen my stitch a wee and it’s made a big difference to the finished outcome.

      Thank you, yes definately have a go at making the dress, it's super easy, and very comfy! The over locker using specific needles, and I use them on both woven and knot garments. So no changing between them 😊. Hope that helps 💕

    Lovely and helpful video, I have a question though, I am trying my hand at sewing with knits and I just completed a vneck, longsleeve tee. However I had a terrible time sewing the hems on the sleeves, they were too small to fit over the adjustment on my sewing machine and when I tried to sew them flat they got really bunched up, I tried using lots of pins but I got poked terribly, and, anyway, I feel frustrated, any tips, also my v did not turn out so good, mainly because the material was so slippery it moved all over the place, but it is soft and completely wearable, so long as no one looks closely. I plan on doing more, I am determined. Thanks again so much, your videos have been such and encouragement to me, I also knit, and your daughter is very talented!

    • @DevonThreadTales
      @DevonThreadTales  3 года назад +1

      Firstly, that is so fabulous that you're determined! I love that. It's a tricky one, I normally sew my hems if they don't fit over the end of the sewing machine like this : I pin them, but also sometimes use clips (pins are less bulky though) I have the sleeve inside out, then place the right side of the hem under the pressure foot. The rest of the hem is above and to the left side. You have to sew really slowly, and keep twisting the whole garment around to keep it all in place and lined up. I'm not sure if that makes any sense, but I really do hope that's helpful. Knitting is such a fab hobby isn't it, so glad you like to see Amy's knits too 😊. Thank you 💕

      With a vneck, if possible, pin then tack it and then sew it, but it is a fiddly thing to sew when working with jersey. 🤞

      Hi Caroline, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought this. Like you I didn’t want to offend Angela as her videos are so great and don’t want to discourage her. I don’t know if the sound was worse because I chrome casted the video on my TV but I had to keep changing the volume. A very slight ‘blip’ in an otherwise informative and professional tutorial. Thanks Angela 👍😁

    Love the Freya. Can I ask fo u use a special stay tape? I have been using strips of interfacing, is that incorrect? Sometimes I feel that the seam seems bulky and hard to press with the stay tape. I have also used ribbon but again the seam seems bulky especially with viscose Jersey! 🤔

    • @DevonThreadTales
      @DevonThreadTales  3 года назад +1

      Hia, I use a stay tape which is essentially a small strip of Interfacing that has a line of stitches in it. So really not too dissimilar to what you're using. You can also use a piece of ribbon or clear elastic. Stay tape is very thin, so shouldnt be too bulky. Here's a link to some, I hope that this helps 😊💕

    Hi Angela, I fit perfectly into one of the sizes, but have a 1" larger waist than my hip and bust size on the chart. Do you think I would need to grade up at the waist, or would I be fine leaving the pattern as one size?

    • @DevonThreadTales
      @DevonThreadTales  3 года назад

      Hhhmm It's difficult isn't it. As the fabric is knit, there is a little more leeway. What it might be an idea to do, is look at the finished garment sizes, take some of your fabric measure that out, and try it around yourself??? It maybe a good idea to do the grading out. Sorry - that's probably not all that helpful 🙈😊
      I hope you manage to make it, and are hoary with the size you do etc 🥰

    I was unable to finish video because of the huge contrast between your voice and the background music which came on while you were sewing. At first I was listening on my phone using ear buds because my husband was watching tv next to me. The constant switching from normal volume to lower volume and finally muting the music completely got very annoying. So tried listening w/o earbuds but husband was greatly annoyed when loud volume of music disturbed him.
    I finally just gave up and completely muted and turned on closed caption, but that made it difficult to see what you were sewing.
    Please turn the music down. It completely ruined the video. Can't remember if it has been that loud in other videos but I definitely won't be able to watch more videos if they are like this. Softer music would be great--not loud strumming which is very jarring. A great video except for the annoying music.

      Other people have mentioned this to me previously, and in future video's I have amended this. I am unable to go back and change video's that are already uploaded.
      I am not a professional vlogger, and I do these videos in my own time, hoping that they will help others, therefore I am learning along the way, so I always take on board kind and helpful comments from my viewers, and adjust my vlogs each time.
      I am glad that you stopped watching the video, as my content is defiantly not out there to upset or antagonise people, and hopefully other videos you watch in future maybe the ones where I have adjusted the volume.
