  • In this video, I will show you how to use The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%.
Targets - Dullness, Uneven Tone, Textural Irregularities, Antioxidant Support
    Format - Suspension
Regimen Step - After Water-Based Serums
Conflicts - Do not combine with other strong acids, EUK 134 0.1% or Peptides.
Time of Use - Ideally PM
The general rule of thumb for order of application is:
    1. Water-based serums
    2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
    3. Creams & suspensions
    Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first), And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing.
And a maximum of three serum formulations in a single regimen.
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!

@Saba Omer The odor of Azelaic Acid is due to its chemical structure, which contains a carboxylic acid group. This group can produce a slightly sour or acidic odor that can be noticeable, particularly when the product is first opened. The scent can be stronger in some batches of the product, but it is generally mild and should dissipate after the product has been absorbed into the skin.
The smell is not an indication that the product is expired or has gone bad.

I do not recommend using Retinol with Azelaic Acid to avoid skin irritation. I recommend using Azelaic Acid in the morning and the retinol in the evening. But technically, you can use both in the same routine; yes, they do not have any crossreactivity in case you have meant that.

Love your content. Yesterday I ordered it so can not way to try it out tomorrow(after patch test). I have a very simple routine, I am using La Roche Posay foam cleanser for sensitive skin and LRP toleriane moisturizer am and pm and every other day niacinamide pm (as per your suggestion) and I really see big difference after I started using niacinamide(It reduces severity of acne and sizes of pores, and overall my skin looks more glowy and even the postredness of acne are fading but still there-ringbell that I need an AE. My concern is how to input azelaic acid into my skin routine, am or pm, once a week or more often?
Thank you in advance! Best regards xx

      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 года назад +2

Hello 😀 Great❤️, There is no right and wrong. You have to see what works best for your skin. But Azelaic Acid is pretty gentle; you can use it on a daily base. I recommend using it only once a day and probably skip the moisturizer. It goes on as the last step.

Hi! My current routine consists of Cleansing balm, Marine hyaluronic, Niacinamide, and finally the Squish moisturiser. I want to add in the Azelaic acid to my routine as the final step before moisturising, would this be okay? I was wondering if using both the Azelaic acid and moisturiser could feel heavy on the skin, or if it would absorb nicely?

Thank you for always explaining... I'm new to The Ordinary and I have concern.
I know that The Ordinary mentioned that it should not combine with other strong acids... but other sites mention that it should be fine to use Lactic Acid with Azelaic - which I did for a week already... Which visibly lighten my post acne. But I'm a worried on this as well, especially that i'm starting to change my 'alternate' routines. Should I alternate my acids including this Azelaic?
    AM: Niacinamide + Az
PM: Lactic Acid (SuMoWeThFr) / AHA BHA (Tu) / Salicylic (Sa) - (Alternate) + Niacinamide

You can only treat acne with specific products so, that it will go away faster and to reduce acne flare-ups, but there isn't a cure. Unless you would know what's triggering your acne and you can change it.

Had some trouble in the beginning but now my skin looks much more clean and bright, my acne scars are fading away tho I can’t say they’re completely gone. Do you think that adding this product to my skin care would help me with the scars or I should try another one? Also I have some blackheads on my nose and open pores, do you have any advice for those? Thank you so much!!

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 года назад +1

Hello Ana, Blackheads are incredibly difficult to treat with topical products. It's best to visit a professional for this. But apart from that, adding the azelaic acid can help with dark spots or generally with skin pigmentation issues. So the combination can work very well. The only issue with it is that it sometimes causes pilling, but if that happens, space the products a bit apart (2-5minutes)

Hello :) just learning how to incorporate this! Knowing that it can’t be used with peptides, I guess it can’t be used alongside moisturizers/creams with peptides? I just began using the youth to the people adaptogen cream and realized there are peptides in that. Also is this considered a chemical exfoliant? Still figuring out what is best for daily use vs a few times a week! Ty x

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 года назад +1

Generally speaking, if it has those ingredients, it may be affected. But it won't harm your skin. There is a change that they can neutralize the peptides. Here is what the Ordinary says:
      Note:
We are deeply grateful to our devoted customers for loving us and our products so much. Our lab has and continues to devote countless hours to share the newest innovations with our broader world. The Ordinary now offers a wide range of products under the Vitamin C, Peptide and Direct Acid categories, and to help our ever-growing, loving family of users build functional and effective routines incorporating these products we have developed an introductory guideline into the brand.
Previously, we did not have a contraindication listed for the use of direct acids/Vitamin C with any of our peptides. However, we now have a huge arsenal of these products and some of the formulations are more susceptible to hydrolysis with certain types of Vitamin C or acids.
Instead of developing a complex guide listing the compatibility of each of our peptides with each acid and Vitamin C, we have adapted the following approach to maximize efficacy for the maximum number of people:
It is best to not use Peptides in the same routine as the following products: Direct acids, LAA (L-Ascorbic Acid) and ELAA (Ethylated Ascorbic Acid). In addition, we would recommend avoiding the use of products containing copper peptides in the same routine as strong antioxidants as well as direct acids/LAA/ELAA.

If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first), And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing.

      2. Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
      3. Sunscreen
      AM2 (rest of the week)

      2. Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
      3. Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion or Granactive Retinoid 2% or 5% in Squalane
PM2 ( Rest of the week)
      1. The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser
      2. (Optional) Lactic Acid 5%
      3. 1 Level Spoon 100% L- Ascorbic Acid Powder with 4-5 drops Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%
I am sure that you will see fantastic results with this routine, but you need to use it consistently(!) for at least 3months!
Gradually incorporating one new product into your regimen at a time and applying test patches first to see what works best for your skin.
With any new formulation, some sensitivity or initial redness can be normal. Initial redness upon application is not a cause for concern if it goes away after a few moments.

I finally decided to try azelaic acid to treat my face redness, and while waiting for the product delivery, i am unsure if i can add a vitamin C serum from l'oreal paris to my routine.
    So my routine is:
    AM:
    cerave hydrating cleanser
    HA serum
    Niacinamide serum
    Alpha arbutin
    Squalane oil + HA moisturizer
    PM:
    cerave hydrating cleanser
    Glycolic acid toner
    HA serum
    Niacinamide serum
    Alpha arbutin
    retinol 1%
So i know from your previous videos that i can't mix vitamin C with glycolic acid, niacinamide and retinol, so i am considering using in the morning by removing niacinamide,
the vitaminc C serum is l'Oreal paris REVITALIFT 10% PURE VITAMINE C CONCENTRATE.
The main reason for trying that is my friend used it and told me it helps with skin brighting and redness and he didn;t need it anymore so gave me his stock left.
I am not sure how i can find out if it is a water serum or something else so i can figure out where to add it.
When i will start using the azelaic acid, i will add it right after the application of Alpha arbutin.
I also saw in your videos that sometimes you alternate products let's say like niacinamide, instead of using it AM and PM, you start using it only AM, does that like slow the results of the product?
I know i am using too many products
I am also aware that it is not an ordinary related question, but i am wondering if you know or have an idea about it?
by the way u're so beautiful

    • @MelissaVanDijkOfficial
      @MelissaVanDijkOfficial  3 года назад +1

      Hey😊
Ok, so for Azelaic Acid, I recommend using it only once per day (there are apparently no benefits of using it twice per day - I’ve read that in a study.) I also recommend using Azelaic Acid in the Morning after your oil and moisturiser.
I have a question for you, do you really feel the need of using the oil + moisturiser? - just curious haha😅
To answer your question about the benefits of using Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin once or twice per day…I’m not sure…if it plays a big role when using it twice daily or if it still gives you the same effects when using it only once per day…I haven’t tried it - which is also difficult to try in some ways haha😅
I also love that my AM routine is different to my PM routine so that I can target multiple concerns without using too much! - but that’s personal preference😊
      May I change your routine a bit😅
      AM:
      - cerave hydrating cleanser
      - HA serum
      - Alpha arbutin
      - Vitamin C
      - (Optional) Squalane oil
      - (Optional) HA moisturizer
      - Azelaic Acid
      PM:
      - cerave hydrating cleanser
      - Glycolic acid toner
      - HA serum
      - Niacinamide serum
      - retinol 1%
Honestly, this routine would be a bit too much for me but you have to try it😅
You can use Glycolic Acid with Vitamin C or Retinol, or Niacinamide. Just make sure to slowly introduce them into your routine especially with Vitamin C or Retinol😊

I have a question about my routine and wanna know what you think is the best? I suffer from blackheads, red skin, scars and sometimes bigger acne spots.
So after watching a lot of videos I think there are 2 options.
    1 = cleanser, toner, lactic acid 10%, niacinamide 10% + zinc 1%, Hyaluronic acid 2% + b5, moisturizer
2= cleanser, toner, niacinamide 10% + zinc 1%, Hyaluronic acid 2% + b5, (in the evening azelaic acid suspension 10%), moisturizer
Which one you think is better to use? Also is it possible to use the caffeine solution 5% + EGCG in both of the routines or is it too much? If it is possible, when should I use it?

Can I use this and then a moisturizer in the evening? I have oily-combo skin

      Hey :)
Depending on how oily you get, you may do not feel the need to use a moisturiser or only use it in areas you are getting a bit drier.
Either way, I recommend using your moisturiser before applying Azelaic Acid :)

Just commenting for the algorithm. 🌹🌹
You've came up twice for me now in the last couple of weeks, hate that I do believe I forgot to engage with your other one on an 'Ordinary' product because I wasn't subbed until just now, and you've got the simplest and most straight forward, helpful way of presenting these products that is exactly what we're all, probably, lookin' for.
It is very much appreciated, darlin'! ✨ 😽😽
Hhmmm, I've actually never added anything or used anything that had potential conflicts like this one has mentioned.. as I use an anti-aging serum with matrixyl, argireline and peptides around my eyes and pull it out towards where my crows feet would be, just the tiny overlap of the azelaic around my temples shouldn't cause too much irritation, I'd think, but would you know of the potential irritants of that, though? 😬🤔

      Hey! :)
Thank you for watching and supporting my videos!💕
I'm happy to hear that you enjoy my videos and find them helpful!
Well, the Ordinary gives specific directions with what you can pair their products to get the most out of it. For example, Azelaic Acid and/or Exfoliating Acids like AHA = Glycolic, Lactic or Mandelic Acid and BHA = Salicylic Acid can conflict with Peptides. It does not cause irritation, but it can break down the Peptides into Amino Acids. That's why the Ordinary recommends not using them together.
This is not the case with all kinds of Peptides but, it can interfere with some. However, to understand this a bit better, you would need to ask a chemist why that's the case😅

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial hahha, that's always my downfall, when we get down to the nitty gritty science side of skincare. 😬😹
Really appreciate your response, and truly, so glad I've found your channel!

Hello! Love your videos!! I have a question regarding the order, do you put moisturizer after the azelaic acid?

I recommend using it before. But you need to test it and see how it works. You can also use the product on it's own.

Hey, so I have a lot of hyperpigmentation in my skin. Would this be beneficial for my skin type? Or is there another ordinary product that you may recommend? Thank you!

The Ordinary has an example routine on their website where it focuses on pigmentation issues, maybe this can help:

I've done a video about it, hope this helps!🥰
