I love Azelaic Acid. I've been using it for over 4 years and it worked wonders on my acne and PIH. Luckily in SA, we have Skinoren which is sold over the counter in a cream 20% and a gel 15%.
Azelaic acid is such a wonderful ingredient yet Sephora only sells it in one product: the ordinary azelaic acid suspension. And the ordinary is online only so for me being a beauty advisor helping WOC find products for hyperpigmentation, it makes it very tricky. It’s sad there aren’t more gentle products being geared towards hyperpigmentation in deeper skin tones. Thank you for your incredible knowledge 💖

Once I started using it, the pimple mature and came out to the surface and now is long gone. Okay! I think I can finally admit that you saved my life!! Wellll my facial life. Lol. I have learnt so much from you. I suffered from hormonal acne due to PCOS. As someone who never had teenage acne, I was so frustrated as nothing seemed to work. Then lo and behold I stumbled upon your channel. This video was so informative and I learnt a lot. I stopped using glycolic acid; I only exfoliated twice a week; I switched up my routine; I started using Alpha Arbutin; I changed my sunscreen to physical; and the list goes on. Lol....In the end, I haven't had a breakout in 2 weeks! I was amazed. Initially I had low expectations but adding azelaic acid to my routine was a Godsend. I have dry skin, and I don’t suffer from breakouts, but I do have PCOS which causes hirsutism, and inevitably for coarse hair, ingrowns. This is the main source of my hyperpigmentation, which is mostly little spots on my chin, jaw area, and sideburn area. Azelaic acid has helped me more in the one week that I’ve been using it than any other skincare product I’ve ever tried. I’m open to any other recommendations you have, and I’m so happy to be a new subscriber! 🤗❤️🤗 Edit: I’m so glad I watched your video, because I was only using this product on my problem areas, but now that I know that it does so much more, I’m going to start using it all over! 🤗❤️🤗
Edit: I’m so glad I watched your video, because I was only using this product on my problem areas, but now that I know that it does so much more, I’m going to start using it all over! I use it in the morning with niacinamide, and I use niacinamide and CeraVe’s retinol at night. I use sunscreen every day, all year long, or I try to run my errands before 8 am or after 6pm. I can’t wait to see more progress!!!
Thank you for your comment I was wondering if it would help for scarring from ingrown hairs ... I don’t get acne but I do get ingrowns and they leave a scar. So I’m glad to see it works for those scars as well
createdbeautiful it sure does!!! It sounds like we both have the same skin issues, and it works wonders so far. Consistency is key. Good luck! 🤗
@@dewilew2137 can this be mix with a moisturizer since I’m reading that it is very drying if so what moisturizer I usually use shea butter or the aveeno oat moisturizer
Thank you for confirming to me that azaleic acid can be used with salicylic acid in the morning. Great video!
I’ve seen so many websites says not to use Vitamin C after SA, how did it work out for you?
I recently started using The Ordinary’s Azelaic acid suspension. I was surprised how gentle it works on my skin since I’ve experienced tingling or burning from Mandelic acid/lactic acid/glycolic acid/Retin A. I’m really loving it so far 😍☺️
where did you find it?! I can't find it anywhere, I thought they discontinued it
@@emilyyg24 I ordered off their website. Right now they have 23% off all products and I just ordered more of their products! I’m loving their 1% retinol in Squalane the most. Azelaic is here: theordinary.deciem.com/product/rdn-azelaic-acid-suspension-10pct-30ml?redir=1
@@sweetanila26 Oh thank you ! i dont think i can get it in canada though unfortunately :( i've tried everywhere
@@emilyyg24 oh no I just checked the Canadian site and see what you mean 😔 I can’t believe it can’t be shipped there and I thought this brand was Canadian
@@sweetanila26 Right! Thank you anyways :)
Dr S.,You are a godsend! Keep those videos coming. I'd like to think that you're keeping the men in mind as well when doing these videos. As such, please help the men of color--especially black men--who suffer with pseudofolliculitis barbae and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Thanks!
Doc, could you do a video on ingrown hairs and how to treat them or get rid of them?
Yes, I’d love this! I recently noticed my Inkey List SA Cleanser seems to calm down the pain and redness of the ingrown area. I definitely don’t want to use an exfoliant everyday, but it’s the only thing that gives me relief. I’d love to know of other options.
Yes, how can we get rid of dark spots due to ingrown hairs on chin
@Lovey Dovey .... I have spent so much money on ingrow hair treatments, from laser to expensive products but always came back. Then I have started using exfoliating my skin with the exfoliating GLOVE 🧤and bar soap every other day. No more Ingrow hair on my skin.
Cosmetic chemistry! Wow! That’s so cool! New subscriber! 👏🏻👏🏻
You've literally answered all the questions I had about this ingredient! Thank you so much
Hi Dr.Alexis!!! You deserve more hype.
You are really generous & have good heart that radiates thats why youre extra gorgeous.
I like your way of explanation, detailed with rationale, voice is so soothing.
please do bacne scars! i’ve had them for years and tried everything over the years including turmeric, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and so much more please!! nothing helps the years old scars!!!
What type of scars you got , is it dark post inflammatory hyperpigmentation scars or atrophic pitted indented scars with indentations, what’s your skin colour ?
Dynamite Dynamite they are dark hyperpigmentation scars! my skin tone is slightly lighter than the doctor in the video
@@SuperSmile411 have you tried manual exfoliation? I use african black soap and it has been helping me clearing out the pimples and the hyperpigmentation
I'm just going to tattoo over mine. 😅
I'm just going to tattoo over mine. 😅
Yes!! So excited. Just went to a new derm and she prescribed me a 15% azelaic acid gel for a few of my skin concerns!!
Did you know possible for azelaic acid to surface sort of purging at first using? The stings from aza beacomes bearable after layer with moisturizer
Hi again dr. 😊 I just wanted to say that I tried the ord. azelaic acid after you recommended it (not to me personally lol) in the maskne vid for irritation. I had some lifestyle acne on my right cheek that had been stinging and super persistent. I applied the azelaic acid two alternate nights-super drying-but so incredibly helpful. I follow with ord HA+B5 and aloe gel. My painful stubborn irritation has about 90% gone. 🥰 THANK YOU 🙏🏽
I stumbled upon your page because my 16yr old daughter wanted to go pick up sunscreen. I thought I should as well but didn’t know which sunscreen to look for so, I came to RUclips University. That was the beginning of last week and I find myself since then here on your channel daily looking for things that I know would be good for my skin. I love how knowledgeable you are!

@@yusraabdullahi595 thanks I’m going to check it out
This answered all of my questions, thank you so so much❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much! I would love a weekly routine for hyper pigmentation to clear up how frequently chemical exfolients should be used, and how many should be combined at once! I've noticed sometimes it seems like we should use retinoid, vitamin c, alpha arbutin, and azalaic acid at once? Thank you again for all of your wonderful videos!
ive been using AA daily for about 2 weeks now and my skin is already seemingly much smoother and even toned i even stopped wearing tinted moisturizer! LOVE IT!!!! i use the prescription 15% strength.
Thank you for this video! I just bought The Ordinary Azelaic Acid. Good to know I should just use it in the morning to help build up my tolerance because I noticed a slight itch. You are a skin saver ❤
I just started it after her recommendation too! It’s itchy like an old acne cream from the 90s. Lol but worked bomb on my skin. 😇
@@menotyou8830 happy am not the only one having the same problem. the one from ordinary is so itching .
Do it still itch you 3 ladies??
I still feel a very slight itch a time to time but nothing constant like when I first started using it. I now use it everyday in the AM.
@@energizedraw Gr8! I'm buying it for my dark marks. Are you seeing improvements?
Omg !!! Thank you soooo much for getting right to topic . I’m so done with “others” that go on about their day & activities 🤦🏽♀️ I’m 👏🏽here 👏🏽to learn about proper skin care👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
So glad to hear azelaic acid plays well with others! Definitely going to add it in now, maskne has left so many dark spots on my chin. Thank you for sharing a routine that's simple!
