The eternal frustration of not being able to communicate exactly what's inside us to someone else, whether we're mute or not. God this movie is beautiful. It's impossible to say what love is, but we know it's real.
i agree. this film is so exquisite, in every way. Who doesn't want pure love like that, eh? I have to confess, I do have a bit of a thing for Amphibian man!
I'm kinda embarrassed for the creature dancing, I font know, well I do love to watch Predators dancing in the extras on Predator 2 DVD....I wish this version of me and a Captured Predator, that's why I love this film so much, I see my version in my imagination when I watch this movie❤

It’s easy to laugh at this scene, but you have to watch the full movie to understand the context. She saw film, television and musicals as a fantasy and an escape. In her fantasy, she can sing and express her feelings of love to the creature.
@@gerardosalazar161 many people just saw this clip without seeing the whole movie and thought this scene was random and out of place. But it makes sense when you watch the movie. I always have to tell people that they have to watch the movie to understand the context.
She knows her love has to leave and she wishes she could say how she feels, but she can only imagine it. That's so sad and lonely. I never saw it as silly for this reason.
For me, the absolutely most joyous part of this movie is the moment I quit seeing an odd looking frumpy lady and a scary monster, and realized I was looking at two of the most beautiful creatures to ever swim this Earth. It's magical how the shape of water changes when the eyes you view it with are now deep in the center of your heart. 💚 OneLove Y'all 🧡
Guillermo said at the show of Jimmy Kimmel that this scene had the potential to be the most sumblime and the most ridiculous at the same time, and it's true. Some people don't get it, some people do. I believe it triumphs in that, for the scene expresses Elisa's innability to express her most pure emotions to the one she need to hear it the most, so, whether you cried or laughed, the message got across anyway. Guillermo, you are such a lovely man.
First time I watched this movie that scene took me so off guard. I was like "Wtf?? She magically gains the ability to speak??" and then I realized it was a dream sequence. So ridiculous and beautiful at the same time
Why is that hard to believe? It's sad AF. She knows her love has to leave and she wishes she could say how she feels, but she can only imagine it. That's so sad and lonely.
I think about this scene often. Sometimes, as a grown man, i wish to tell people this. But its the words i can't get out. I'm a night person, and my emotions spike during the night. Only my cat was around. And I danced, and sang to him, about how he'll never know.
Reading the comments: yeah out of context im sure it's easy to misinterpret this scene and find it nonsensical but within the movie it's absolutely perfect, this song is stuck in my head weeks after seeing this film. "If there's some other way, to tell you I love you, I swear, I don't know how..."
Many people aren’t able to understand the movie. Elisa wasn’t an human, she never was, it’s explicit when the fish man cuts her scar. This movie is a piece of art, it can bring fairy tales into our real world. I love it!
I love this movie mainly because I love romance movies and shows and this is one of the most beautiful stories I've ever seen in my entire life this reminded me of West Side Story Romeo and Juliet Bueaty and the Best
@@OriRori It's more like a spinoff of H.P. Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth". The Asset can be interpreted to be a member of the 'Deep Ones' (fish people) while Elisa is probably a Deep One/human inbreed child that looks more human sans the gills and speech impediment. In time, living underwater with the Asset she'll probably gain a more and more fishlike appearance like the Asset.

Its hard for someone to appreciate something if its not something they relate with. This movie's central theme was about loneliness and the desire to find someone who appreciates us for who we are. Maybe you got lucky in love or its easy for you to find it. Its not the same for many out there. Its fantasy yes, but its a fantasy that touched our hearts, a fantasy we could escape into momentarily.
@@jsteffey88 Good thing I don't give a damn about the Oscars lol After giving Best Picture to fucking "Green Book" over "The Favourite" and other much better 2018 films, they lost me. I also enjoy Shape of Water much better than that most Oscar winners that tend to be "flavor of the week" before people kinda stop talking about it and move on to the next hot shit. At least TSOW actually stuck with me and it reminded me of bizzaro French films like "Delicatessen" which I love. Of course, if your complains are "the romance is just friggin weird and I can't get into it" or "I stopped caring about the Asset the moment it ate the cat", those are perfectly valid arguments, it's not a film for everyone at all.
