Well, I'm afraid it's not that simple. What I've discovered having witnessed a lot of torn roofs in St.Elizabeth and other parishes - hurricane straps actually made the situation much worse in some cases. In general, hurricane straps can help by strengthening the connections between different parts of a building, making the structure more resistant to high winds. However, in a Category 4 hurricane (over 130 mph) - there are instances where the presence of hurricane straps can lead to more extensive damage. Without straps, roofing materials like zinc may be blown away, leaving the wooden frame intact for easier repair. With straps, the entire wooden frame can be blown off along with the roof, sometimes even pulling pieces of concrete from the walls! For wooden/plywood houses - hurricane straps are a no-no during the hurricane, as this is how the full house is destroyed - the hurricane can't lift up the roof, so it simply breaks all the walls, leaving foundation only. Therefore, while hurricane straps generally increase structural integrity in high winds and are must in Jamaica due to tropical storms, in extreme conditions, they can lead to greater overall damage if the structure fails. That's why the solution has to be way more complex, starting from the roof shape/design, type of roofing material, type of eave etc.
That's assuming the rest of the building is strong enough. There are homes in New England US that are hundreds of years old because they were built well surviving blizzards year after year. In Florida old wooden structures have survived cat 5 hurricanes. Id like to know how the dome houses in St Thomas did? They are strong and cheaper to build, but people are reluctant to use the design because they don't like the aesthetics.

New England is not a good example, I'm afraid, as it never has any hurricanes, while Blizzards are usually around 35 Mph winds, with maximum gusts of around 60 mph. This cannot compare to a Category 4 hurricane winds which start FROM 130 mph...

My family migrated to Connecticut (which is technically a part of New England, but it's a bit complicated as the part of the state where I grew up is closer to NYC than to what is regarded as New England proper) from Jamaica and as a child I remember when the hurricane touched down. I was shocked to discover that Gloria was a Category 4.

I have no idea yet, how things really are. All I know is that the roof on the house is undamaged, but only 4 fruit trees are left standing! Pre-mix, cement company, and others. Please come on board and give those who can do decking help. Hurricane will always be a part of the Caribbean. All hardware across Jamaica drop in and build back some houses. The people will highly appreciate it. Any help is a blessing 🙌
The homes that are build according to code are still standing. if only people stop taking chances when building their homes in Jamaica and just FOLLOW the building codes. They must use hurricane straps on the roofs and DO NOT build houses at low line or at sea level. The ancestors knew what they were doing when they build in the hills. My family is from St. Elizabeth but they moved to the hills of Clarendon in the 1800s. It's the best thing they did.

I hope the Jamaican government will enact a tourists fee when tourists book their flight to Jamaica. Venice, Italy and Aruba are using tourists fees. Vacationers like to help the Jamaican island and this is one way they could help the island and its citizens. I sent an email to the govt today and wait to hear their response.

What I noticed most of the focus is on the well-off communities. I rarely see RUclipsrs talk about the poorest communities that need more help. I give my hats to Colaz Smith TV and the Stone Island family, who focused more on the poorest communities. Sad!
It’s actually the same community that colas smith tv visits. That man own a couple business in that area so he will distribute it to the people. I sm from that area so I know these people.
Breds Foundation actually works with these very same families. I mentioned this fact in my video at 16:55... The reason you don't see me riding on a truck handing out a few pieces of zinc to the communities you've mentioned is because I have dignity. What youtubers like Colaz are doing has nothing to do with providing real help to people, but everything to do with exploiting the tragedy to make popular content and promote his youtube channel at the expense of the most vulnerable communities. If it's hard to understand why, just answer a simple question - how would you feel if some stranger came into your house and was sticking a camera in your face when you hadn't even had a chance to take a proper shower for a week or put fresh clothes on? AND you had to feel grateful to him, because.. well, he brought a piece of zinc that you didn't even have tools nor skills to install. Sure, help to others should be promoted in order to encourage donations and involvement, but it requires professional and sensitive approach. Exposing people who are already suffering, just like some youtubers do for the sake of gaining views is just awful! This is why you see my video the way it is, and if there is a moment I personally decide to help anyone, I'll make sure my camera is turned OFF.

I heard house insurance is unheard of in JA. This is natural disaster, which normally would be covered. Maybe except Florida. I heard insurance companies are not covering Florida.

My disappointment about Jamaica is with all the tourism money that comes in, why in 2024 do you have your people still living in wood shacks? Zinc covering isn't a roof!! Smh It's just sad & insane to me.
When donating to charities, you have to provide your details. It's a regulation for any official donations/collecting of donations to prevent money laundry etc. Having said that, I still find their way of accepting payments is quite simple - simply provide your name/address and use credit card online to pay on their site. When you go to their site bredsfoundation.org and then click "Tax Deductible Donation" - you will be taken to American friends of Jamaica website, where you can enter your name and card to make a payment.
Mark my word repairing these zinc roofs with another zinc roof is a big mistake. Every house in Jamaica in 2024 should have concrete. There will be more hurricanes in the years to come, and if the island do get hit directly, it will be devastating if these rules are made of zinc and everyone in Jamaica should have a generator, because if a hurricane hits directly, electricity won’t be on for months, and everyone needs their water tank my word
NO to concrete roofs! Have you ever had to stay in one during a week in the summer? 😢😮 There must be another type of roof to use. NOT zinc...NOT concrete!!
it's common in Jamaica to have a concrete house. Roofs can vary. Many people have concrete flat roofs and many who can't afford proper roof - do zinc roofs. However, we also have proper metal and tile roofs. I don't see wooden roofs in Jamaica, but the roof frame is usually made of wood.
@@originalfoxylady4520 the difference between roofs with straps/proper nails and those without is that in the second case the zinc is lifted easily by the hurricane and taken away, but in the first case the zinc is lifted together with the roof frame and the pieces of the wall. So, in case of that last hurricane it looks like the properly constructed zinc roof with protection from the hurricane resulted in much worse damage, I'm afraid.

You are always saying the government is doing good for the country. I hope you use your influence and advocate for the government to help these people with the money they receive and don’t put it into their own pockets.
Actually, the government is involved on many levels. They have their on fundraiser going and they are also collaborating with NCB foundation. They help with Treasure Beach, but their focus is beyond just Treasure Beach area for understandable reasons. Their priorities are also very different, e.g. who is going to restore 212 schools that were damaged during the hurricane? Not a single private fundraiser can handle that, so the government should be doing that. However, making a video about how the government is helping would not work, because if the government is not doing a good job - people will blame me for opposition propaganda. If the government is doing a good job - people will blame me for being a "sell out".
People should also take responsibility for not following building code and took that chance. There were houses with no steel and no hurricane straps. This could have been avoided if everyone followed building code
It is easy to blame the government for everything! The people are part of the government. We need to stop blaming and put hearts and hands together to restore. God's speed to the ones trying to rebuild and not adding negativity.
Exactly - hurricane ties, also called hurricane clips and hurricane straps, are metal connectors with holes for fasteners, such as nails or screws. The roofers should be using these hurricane ties to reinforce the connection between the roof truss and the wall plate.' Outside of this another disater and the same thing happens again!!!

Jamaicans moving to Ukraine can gentrify Ukraine, but not the other way around, because the standard of living in Jamaica is higher than in Ukraine (even before the war).
Jamaica is already gentrified by Jamaican .in many places, maybe you are only used to seeing the ungentrified area of Jamaica. And assume everywhere in Jamaica is like that. Don't be fooled by what you see mostly on Y.T And foreign media.

8:19 Above Category 3 of the eye wall of the Hurricane, zinc fly around like paper. Look at how it wrapped around the iron frame.

I personally would not blame you for that, I would consider it being fair to what you are trying to accomplish with your work. I still watch your videos and appreciate your work, just be fair when you are out both sides in every situation is good.
What I noticed most of the focus is on the well-off communities. I rarely see RUclipsrs talk about the poorest communities that need more help. I give my hats to Colaz Smith TV and the Stone Island family, who focused more on the poorest communities. Sad!
It’s actually the same community that colas smith tv visits. That man own a couple business in that area so he will distribute it to the people. I sm from that area so I know these people.

The reason you don't see me riding on a truck handing out a few pieces of zinc to the communities you've mentioned is because I have dignity.
What youtubers like Colaz are doing has nothing to do with providing real help to people, but everything to do with exploiting the tragedy to make popular content and promote his youtube channel at the expense of the most vulnerable communities.
If it's hard to understand why, just answer a simple question - how would you feel if some stranger came into your house and was sticking a camera in your face when you hadn't even had a chance to take a proper shower for a week or put fresh clothes on? AND you had to feel grateful to him, because.. well, he brought a piece of zinc that you didn't even have tools nor skills to install.
Sure, help to others should be promoted in order to encourage donations and involvement, but it requires professional and sensitive approach.
Exposing people who are already suffering, just like some youtubers do for the sake of gaining views is just awful!
This is why you see my video the way it is, and if there is a moment I personally decide to help anyone, I'll make sure my camera is turned OFF.

I heard house insurance is unheard of in JA. This is natural disaster, which normally would be covered. Maybe except Florida. I heard insurance companies are not covering Florida.

Kindly note, other parts of Jamaica also need help, not only St.Elizabeth, but all parishes. In the beginning of the video I did actually say that I'm making a documentary about all 14 parishes, but most damage was directly in Treasure Beach, so I decided to take a part of this story into a separate video. Even without Treasure beach - the full documentary about Jamaica will have a huge chapter about St.Elizabeth..

placing cables underground should be done indeed. I've heard there are projects on this, but not sure how it can be implemented. The costs of this are absolutely ridiculous, but then again it can pay off..

My disappointment about Jamaica is with all the tourism money that comes in, why in 2024 do you have your people still living in wood shacks? Zinc covering isn't a roof!! Smh It's just sad & insane to me.
They need easier solutions for donating. Something that everyone knows how to use quickly and easily
When donating to charities, you have to provide your details. It's a regulation for any official donations/collecting of donations to prevent money laundry etc. Having said that, I still find their way of accepting payments is quite simple - simply provide your name/address and use credit card online to pay on their site. When you go to their site bredsfoundation.org and then click "Tax Deductible Donation" - you will be taken to American friends of Jamaica website, where you can enter your name and card to make a payment.

Mark my word repairing these zinc roofs with another zinc roof is a big mistake. Every house in Jamaica in 2024 should have concrete. There will be more hurricanes in the years to come, and if the island do get hit directly, it will be devastating if these rules are made of zinc and everyone in Jamaica should have a generator, because if a hurricane hits directly, electricity won’t be on for months, and everyone needs their water tank my word

Concrete houses with wooden roofs? Is that wide spread?
it's common in Jamaica to have a concrete house. Roofs can vary. Many people have concrete flat roofs and many who can't afford proper roof - do zinc roofs. However, we also have proper metal and tile roofs. I don't see wooden roofs in Jamaica, but the roof frame is usually made of wood.
FYI: A properly contructed zinc roof w hurricane straps; concrete nails; hurricane belts & concrete blocks filled & steel 18" apart costs > slab roofs. d@@JAMAICAWITHIRIE
@@originalfoxylady4520 the difference between roofs with straps/proper nails and those without is that in the second case the zinc is lifted easily by the hurricane and taken away, but in the first case the zinc is lifted together with the roof frame and the pieces of the wall. So, in case of that last hurricane it looks like the properly constructed zinc roof with protection from the hurricane resulted in much worse damage, I'm afraid.

@@originalfoxylady4520 what do you mean? I think you don't understand. The hurricane twists steel and tears it out of concrete, breaks the wood and shatters walls into pieces, so the entire house is destroyed, not the roof. The roofman can do nothing about it.
You are always saying the government is doing good for the country. I hope you use your influence and advocate for the government to help these people with the money they receive and don’t put it into their own pockets.
Actually, the government is involved on many levels. They have their on fundraiser going and they are also collaborating with NCB foundation. They help with Treasure Beach, but their focus is beyond just Treasure Beach area for understandable reasons. Their priorities are also very different, e.g. who is going to restore 212 schools that were damaged during the hurricane? Not a single private fundraiser can handle that, so the government should be doing that. However, making a video about how the government is helping would not work, because if the government is not doing a good job - people will blame me for opposition propaganda. If the government is doing a good job - people will blame me for being a "sell out".
People should also take responsibility for not following building code and took that chance. There were houses with no steel and no hurricane straps. This could have been avoided if everyone followed building code
It is easy to blame the government for everything! The people are part of the government. We need to stop blaming and put hearts and hands together to restore.

Just in case it wasn't clear from the accent - the people shown in this video have never moved to Jamaica, they are THE local Jamaicans living in Treasure Beach for generations.
As for me - I am a Ukrainian living in Jamaica. Jamaicans moving to Ukraine can gentrify Ukraine, but not the other way around, because the standard of living in Jamaica is higher than in Ukraine (even before the war).
Jamaica is already gentrified by Jamaican .in many places, maybe you are only used to seeing the ungentrified area of Jamaica. And assume everywhere in Jamaica is like that. Don't be fooled by what you see mostly on Y.T
