From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name, which has become a worldwide phenomenon.
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Spielberg directed the film from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline. The film was produced by Donald De Line, Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Dan Farah; with Adam Somner, Daniel Lupi, Chris deFaria and Bruce Berman serving as executive producers.
“Ready Player One” stars Tye Sheridan (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Mud”), Olivia Cooke (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “Bates Motel”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One - A Star Wars Story,” “Bloodline”) and T.J. Behind the scenes, three-time Oscar winner Spielberg (“Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan”) reunited his creative team from “Bridge of Spies,” including Oscar-winning director of photography Janusz Kaminski (“Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan”), Oscar-winning production designer Adam Stockhausen (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”), Oscar-winning editor Michael Kahn (“Saving Private Ryan,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark”) and Sarah Broshar (“The Post”), and costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone (“Moonrise Kingdom”). The music is by Oscar-nominated composer Alan Silvestri (the “Back to the Future” films, “Forrest Gump”).
Warner Bros. Pictures and Amblin Entertainment present, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, an Amblin Production, a De Line Pictures Production, a Steven Spielberg Film, “Ready Player One.”
Slated for release on March 29, 2018, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Warner Bros owns/has usage rights to more than enough stuff, including but not limited to: DC, Looney Tunes, Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Harry Potter, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Matrix, The Iron Giant, Blade Runner, Godzilla, Mortal Kombat. MEANWHILE Steven Spielberg has a great relationship with George Lucas/Kathleen Kennedy/Lucasfilm....meaning that Star Wars will be fair game.
ChrisPeteG Disney has to be willing to play ball as well for Star Wars rights to be licensed for use in this flick. Basically, Spielberg has to pull a Roger Rabbit to get permission from other studios to portray their properties and franchises in order to shoot this film and still be true to the book.
I'm in the midst of reading/listening to the book (depends on if I'm at home or in the car) and I'm about halfway in. So far Spielberg has to (if he hasn't already) obtain the rights for several old console/coin op games, a ton of 80s music and a shitload of movies from various production companies.
And if ever get to love the movie shown in theaters and wish to get it to own for yourself later on, better get a hold of one of the first batch of physical copies, because later releases of this movie will probably go through changes in music or whatever due to copyright issues (Need I refer to LEGEND (1985) with Tom Cruise for an example? Music copyright nightmare! )

Steven Spielberg wanted Gene wilder to come out of retirement to play the creator of the MMO in the film (as a little nod and a wink mirror image to his role as willy Wonka )but he found out he was in the early on sets of Alzheimer's disease and so he couldn't be cast, you can hear the theme for pure imagination being played thought out in this trailer including the very first three notes of Pure Imagination for the READY PLAYER ONE logo as a tribute to the late great actor

EDIT: 29th of March, just got done seeing the movie. It was worth the wait, good but not great.
Just finished the book yesterday. It was great! I'm not a child of the 80's but the referencing of some obscure trivia of the era, that I was familiar with, still struck a cord with me. It's an era of pen n paper rpgs, simplistic vector graphics, and "Pure Imagination". I hope they stay true to that era at least half as much as the book did.

it continues to boggle me just how impressively made the teaser was, and how it both hyped the movie and shrouded it in mystery. i always come back to this because of how i intially reacted to viewing it. both the book and movie are mid, and i've read/watched it at least five times.
If Disney is adorable, Warner Bros. is HOT AND COOL. And this trailer strengthens my opinion and conviction. The book this movie was based on holds a place to my heart. Despite the differences I know this movie will be amazing regardless.

Oatmeal Raisin you make a good arguement, but because it's Spielberg and the academy loves him, it might be nominated for best picture if it the movie turns out to be good. I don't like the Academy. I feel like they nominate movies not for their story, but for the people involved in the movies. For example, I highly doubt that Suicide Squad would have won its Oscar if the make-up artists involved hadn't been nominated before. Frinkin' Star Trek lost to Suicide Squad because of that. There should be more action packed movies being nominated for the Academy. Last one we got was Mad Max. Action movies are what people love. I mean the academy should recognize movies that people remember in years to come. Movies they think will be classics. Now who the hell remembers "Crash", "Spotlight" I was hoping Civil War would make it in to the cut or at least be considered for the Academy Award for best picture. It had superb acting (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Daniel Bruhl...), awesome action scenes and an awesome story. Many people, if not all, liked it. It didn't even make it to the visual effects nomination... I hope that if this movie turns out to be good/great, the academy considers nominating it. Just sayin'. And if they don't nominate Logan this year for at least one category of the following (Best Actor: Hugh Jackman; Best Supporting Actor: Sir Patrick Stewart; Best Supporting Actress: Dafne Keen; Best Motion Picture; Best Screenplay), I'm gonna be pissed. And I doubt I'll be the only one.

Aiden Baker I just finished it today on my kindle. It's clear that the movie might be going in a slightly different direction, but I'm still pumped. There's some scenes straight out of the book: "the stacks", Og's birthday party. And some original scenes for the movie, specifically the race. I'm curious to see what that's all about. If they can fine balance the book and originality for the movie, that's okay with me.

Hoxtilicious that's no mistake. The premise of the movie parallels a lot of the parts of the Chocolate Factory movie. Kid living in poverty goes through tests to earn the estate of one of the richest people in the world.

Xavier Michael Believe it or not, the premise of the book is a lot similar to Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The creator of this virtual world dies and leaves an incredibly difficult challenge in the game. The first person to complete the challenge wins his estate. Keep in mind, this guy is the richest person in the world by far because of this game.
So the story follows this kid who grew up in poverty and goes through various tests and eventually ends up living the dream.
I could be talking about either Ready Player One or Willie Wonka.

Im 17. I've watched and loved more movies in the 80's than any other decade. I've played all the games referenced in the book before even reading it. Loved the book. Hyped for this movie.
I read this book in eighth grade, and now...

(Also, I know this sounds a bit stupid, but I'm kinda hoping that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is referenced in this movie, considering that it never actually got a reference in the book and it did start out in the late 80s.)

Looks like it deviates a lot from the book, but in all honesty, I don't even care. With Spielberg at the helm and the author of the book writing the screen play, I'm sure it will be amazing.
TheDapperOwl It takes a lot to compress this book to fit within a two-three hour movie. And in order to retain the gist of the book and the basic plot, I'm pretty sure a lot of the cool things described in the book will have to be omitted.
The movie will probably add an additional character, probably in the shape of an electronic assistant of some sort in the OASIS, to help with a lot of exposition. Either it's that or a voice-over (not a fan of VO).
If anything, I hope the book will at a later point be turned into a one-season show, where 22 episodes definitely will be enough to capture the full plot of the book and still look awesome.
This gave me chill bumps so bad. It's nostalgia heaven.
