      I'm right behind you! Maynard is a force of nature and it's cool watching them experience it for the first time. There are two versions of each of us: Us, before Tool, and Us-Tool. Once down that rabbit hole you're never the same.

    Maynard really resented the fact that he was expected to have a stage presence so he kind of had an “anti stage presence” presence. But meanwhile his anti stage presence became captivating lol

    • @VocalSplendorStudios
      @VocalSplendorStudios  5 лет назад +68

      Anti stage presence has its charms. Iconic jazz trumpeter, Miles Davis, would play with his back to the audience! When you're brilliant, it still works.

    • @EvelynVash
      @EvelynVash 5 лет назад +12

      He still does it to this day. Went to perfect circle live this last tour and he was on a platform (pedestal?) in the back that was dark the majority of the time. It would only get light enough to see him when the vocals were the major focus. You can tell he really loves the music of his band and wants to make sure people are focusing on the amazing work they are doing, because it is really easy to just lose yourself focusing on his voice.

    • @44thatssweet

    • @masonblack3461
      @masonblack3461 5 лет назад +14

      @@44thatssweet he hates his fans? Weird because his fans don't think so and most of us aren't masochistic mentally deficient sheep. Maybe don't comment on a video about an artist you don't like since you don't have anything credible or relevant to add to the conversation.
      Pro-tip, your opinions are not facts so don't present them as if they are. That's not a request. Your commentary isn't valid as long as it dismisses the opinions of others. Frame your thoughts appropriately or be prepared to have them shoved back into your face. You don't have to like his performances, it doesn't matter if he's psychotic, his mental health is his concern and not yours, he is not overrated because his record sales is far above anything you've produced. Have you done for the world what he has? Since I don't know who you are I'm going to say ... no. Again, your opinions are noted. Your opinions are ignorant. Your opinions are not facts. You don't get to dismiss others by stating your opinions as facts. Every time you do someone is going to come along and throw them in the garbage until you learn how to be a better person and act like you know how to converse in a civil manner. You're welcome, now go sit at the kiddie table until you learn how to talk like an adult.

    Maynard has immense stage fright, that's one of the only performances I've seen where he's up front. Most of the time he's in the back in shadow. I think how you said he "wasn't even seeing the crowd" was very on point. It would have been a necessary state of mind for his performance like this. To separate his consciousness from the crowd to feel comfortable.
    I know this channel is a focus on vocal technique and talent, but if you want to get a better idea of just how much on another level they are, have the lyrics up as well. And don't be afraid to pause to process throughout the song. It's kind of necessary to fully appreciate them.
    And also some good over ear headphones are ideal to get the full effect.
    You don't listen to tool, you experience them ;)

    You are spot on. From my understanding of what the intention of the song, it is to represent a manifestation of how an addict would act and talk if they were completely open and honest. No fear. No filters. I do find it interesting that all of your focus in critiquing his vocal performance was on his physical experience and really nothing to do with his ability as a singer, except that he was singing full and clear while bent over awkwardly forward. I love the word “feral” for his performance though. Great characterization. Thanks and I will watch more!

    The secret when it comes to Tool is to listen to it alone, in a dark room, (preferably loudly) when you really want to look inwards, or when you feel angered by the world. Valerie, if you really want your mind blown by this band, listen to each musician in turn as you listen to the song, and notice how it all comes together - the timing, the precision. They put in MUCH MORE effort than most.

Idk if anyone has mentioned it or not but Maynard James Keenen has always had stage fright. Even today. 30 plus years later he still has it. Most concerts he will sing back by the drum and hardly any lights on him. He bends over and what not because of his stage fright. I think he has grown so used to doing so he is able to belt out the lyrics like no other. A great singer in our time. Thank you for willing for listening to Maynard. I enjoyed it.

    He battles stage fright so intensely that he hides behind the music. Those performances were among his hardest times. As the band grew in fame and importance, it allowed him to hide behind the production of the show and now performs in the dark alongside the drum riser, the music is his center stage. In his other bands he performs in costume for the most part, hiding behind a persona created by his art. He is also a very passionate winemaker and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner.
