A lot of Tool fans know that Maynard is a big BJJ guy, but fewer know that he was a pretty good wrestler in high school. His dad was even the coach. I have noted in a lot of his performances that he adopts a wrestling stance (or something close to it) and moves like a grappler. The ultimate example is obviously when a fan came on stage during Pushit iirc and Maynard hip tossed him, threw his hooks in, and finished the song literally without missing a beat. He definitely takes a combative posture towards music, an it works.

This is incredible. Being born in '95 my dad was a massive Tool fan when I was little. Fast forward to 2020 and I just got back from the Tool show in Spokane, where I bought some merch for my dads 48th birthday present. I drove 8 hours each way on a Monday to see them, listening to their whole discography and reminiscing about driving through the night, falling asleep in my dads car listening to those same songs as a 5-10 year old. Theres something powerful about the bond built by the love of music, and the nostalgia old songs can hold. Your little boy is gonna grow up to appreciate true music because of you, and when you or your son hear Pneuma or Invincible in 20 years, you'll be brought right back to those little moments youre having with him now!

Nice! I am really glad that you chose this Band & song. Maynard has said in interviews before that he uses his music & artistry strictly for his own personal therapy to battle through specific times in his life. We are all simply along for the ride. A captivating & intense one at that. He won't even perform the same songs live after a while because he looses feeling for the song once he's passed it. Of course, he has also said that his music is for others to do the same & he welcomes it. When you spoke about that "animalistic stare" he gets mid performance, he does "trance out" with emotion most of the time in his performances & I agree I don't even think he sees the audience during those moments. He really is in is head so to say.
If you liked Tool you should definitely check out A Perfect Circle which is his other Band. It's still Maynard however it's a total different style/vibe. It's not as intense as Tool but I think you would enjoy it from a vocal stand point. The man can sing.
Or the late Layne Staley of Alice In Chains who is one of the best Alternative signers from the Grunge era ever IMO. The range on that mans voice is ridiculous.

Great video, Tara. I love that you react to someone outside of your own singing genre and understand the differences needed in the performance style. Many vocal coaches would have criticised his posture as not being optimal, but you understand that this is required to live in the song as the character.
By the way, and there's no way you would know this from the spelling itself, but "Reading" is pronounced "Redding", not "Reeding". It's one of our English idiosyncrasies!

brandon boyd Any proof of either of your statements? I couldn't find any.
Even though it's very likely he's done some acid (judging by his interviews and rumors), I doubt he was on acid on stage, at least not in this performance. Have you ever been on acid? When you're "very high on acid" as you stated, you won't be able to focus and perform like this. I'd be very very surprised if he was, since it takes a lot of effort to be able to do that even... well, sober.

6:20 Spot on. He is an amazing singer and his posture is definitely making it more difficult but this is just as much theater as it is singing. He conveys pain with his entire body and pain is central to this song, as anyone who has had a brush with addiction will tell you. Also, thanks for spending so much time after the song to give us your thoughts. Too often you only get a quick endorsement and the usual like & subscribe.

5:26 - "He becomes the lyrics of the song" - That's the accurate description of Maynard's onstage performance. It's not just for this song, but throughout his career, he has been doing it. He performs insane characters while singing and his body movement stays completely submerged into the lyrics depicting the main character of the song as if telling a story.

Vitorio Santamato what’s really said is that you don’t know Tool. Maynard experimented with drugs. He didn’t like the way they made him feel. All his vocals are sober. Nothing less. He hates everything that messes with his mind. You don’t really know Tool, A Perfect Circle, or Puscifer...do you?

oilfan pw Not exactly, it has been said he has stage fright however he debunked that in his book. Has nothing to do with him being hunched over or why he stands in the back.. he said and I quote I stand in the back because I’m not a lead singer and I cringed when people call me that I need to hear myself and don’t wanna try and sing over Adams Amps and I can hear better in the back plus it’s about the music not me being out front .. and so on people assume it’s stage fright but it’s not the case.. but being hunched over has nothing to do with stage fright.. he doesn’t do that performing APC or pussifer.. it’s just how he gets into singing early TOOL.. just saw them live a few weeks ago great show and was glad to hear some new songs, hands down my fav band. Seen them several times live .. unfortunately he doesn’t get into it quite the same and I can’t blame him, haha we are all getting older.. still a great show tho

The fact that he performs so well is astounding. I say this because he suffers from SEVERE social anxiety disorder. Those strange mannerisms he has on stage aren't him being 'in character' as you put it. He'd probably wish it were a character. Those are all movements he's making as he's struggling against his anxiety while performing for so many people. Its not like he hasn't performed for thousands before, but he still can't get over it. You're lucky you can see his face in this video, because usually he's got his back facing the audience simply because he can't bare looking at them.
Truly a fantastic vocalist and tragic performer.
