Hi Hannah.....if you are going to go on making carrot cakes you really should invest in a box grater. These were available to housewives in the '40's (my mother had one) and are still readily available today. They stand up on a counter and have 4 metal walls filled with different surfaces which will grate pretty much any vegetable so much more easily than your hand held grater. They also produce nicely grated cheese and breadcrumbs. Your cake turned out beautifully!
Theodore Tugboat! Awww... 💗 My son loved this show when he was growing up! It aired here in Texas on our PBS station. He is 26 now and still has Theodore Tugboat toys. Happy birthday to your boyfriend and your mother! (Linda in Texas)
Okay, so I got so excited when I saw this and I was like "yes, yes that's it!" And then my boyfriend was like... well, actually it isn't and I was like WHAT 😮 turns out Theodore Tugboat is an American show and 'Tugs' is British! But GET THIS, TUGS co-creator directed 60 out of the 130 episodes of Theodore Tugboat! And so it's pretty much the same show... Wow, I never expected to be doing a Tugs deep dive on a Monday morning😂
I believe the show is Tugs - the maritime counterpart to Thomas which sadly didn’t take off as well Carrot cake is always well received in my family and a few are always baked every year and disappear rapidly!
Ooh do love a carrot cake, lady at my local church cafe makes cakes & it's between carrot/lemon drizzle that sells most and yours looks lush lucky boyfriend 😊 😉
Anything with potatoes is fabulous in my eyes. And the Apple is an easy swap for dried fruit which was harder to get. If you worked in a factory this would really fill you up.
Was just thinking, that you would probably need to get used to your cooker's current settings. As all the burners would have been replaced when we converted from coal gas, to North Sea natural gas in the 1970s. So the actual temperatures of the heat settings might have changed from those in the book. 🤔
That looks great. I'm not a fan of modern carrot cake because I find it way too sweet. I will probably like the 40's variant a lot better. Oh yes, tip: your previous cake is probably burnt because you put them directly near the fire, if you put them on the rack in the middle, they just get heat all around and there is not 1 side directly above the fire.
My arms hurt just watching you grate the carrots 🥕. Was the cartoon “Budgy the little helicopter”? Cake looked lush, I scoffed my strawberry and raspberry crumble.
Good guess! It was actually a British television show called 'Tugs' about Tug boats working on a harbour. I'd never heard of it until my boyfriend but it is exceptionally charming! And yes, I had arm ache bad!

Just wondering if your rack is too close to the flame, causing your sponge cake to burn. Maybe raise it up to the center of the oven. Love all your videos! Well done!
I love carrot cake. Needs spices! And cream cheese icing. I'm just annoyed my oven is broken 😂. I'd take your spiceless cake right now. Will wait to see what it looks like. Typing while watching ❤

Carrot cake is my favourite. Especially with thick icing on top. Yum that looks delicious. The little cat peeking around you is gorgeous 😻

Yeah I think what most people like about carrot cake is the icing.

Did you have on a vintage apron lol x
what do you use for filling? lots of love
Happy birthday boyfriend!
He says thank you and would like to introduce himself: "Tell them hello, and my name's Jack" (direct quote) 😋
Where was your apron? No good 1940’s housewife would dream of cooking without an apron on!
My goodness, you're right! 😳
Looks lovely, did it taste nice?

YOU GOT IT RIGHT! Lots of people are saying 'Theodore Tugboat', which is apparently like an American version!

You need to buy a thermometer for your oven. Did they exist in the 1940’s?
I believe so, lemme check that x

Your modern recipe seems to have 2 lots of sugar & no fat or oil. Sorry to be nitpicky!
