Where nostalgia finds a home.
We've been conditioned to OVER-CONSUME- A throwback to rationing.
Tonight, we take a deep dive into our culture of over-consumption and how we have actually been ✨️conditioned✨️ to over-consume throughout history. We'll also be throwing back to a poignant point in history, where frugality and thrift were a necessity to survival, but also produced benefits to the general population that may surprise you...

10 ways to live like a Grandma in 2025!

The 'grandmacore' aesthetic has become increasingly popular on social media, people are choosing to embrace the charm of bygone eras, take things a little slower, and prioritise comfort. And I'm all for it! And although we need to be cautious about casting a stereotype on people of a certain age, there is so much value and wisdom that we can adopt in slowing down, appreciating the simple things...

In celebration of a beloved childhood show of mine that has finally returned to our screens after 15 years! I am throwing it back to when I made myself and my sweet pigeon, Penny, into an @Aardman.Official inspired character. This is a re-edited little bonus video that I thought would be nice to reminisce over during the holiday period, whilst I recuperate and get ready for a new year of conte...
Spending Christmas at your grandparents house: POV!

I'll tell you something, this video was hard to make, because this year will be my first ever Christmas without both of my grandparents. My lovely Grandpa passed away in 2014, and my sweet Nan this year in October. In memory of them both, and the wonderful childhood Christmas' spent in their home that was once filled with so much laughter and noise and chaos, I have made this video. One that I ...

In 2022, I made a silly little video following on from the #letsgetdressed trend that was blowing up all over social media. But rather than draping myself in Gucci or Prada, I did my own 'tongue in cheek' version by setting it in the rationed era of the 1940s. Originally intended to be nothing more than a sobering take on clothing consumption with a vintage twist, it slowly started developing i...

I really like your non frictionless approach!! I wish in spring you would do a Victory Garden How to??
If I see one more YT add or email from Purdy & Figg I’m feeling I might have to get in the car and drive to HQ and give them a piece of my mind! Driving me mad. And now, most assuredly, a product I will never buy. We need to consume less, yes. But advertisers need to understand how counterproductive bombardment is. With so much poverty and homelessness in the U.K. now, we could really do with a return of the Lyon’s Corner House. These were the communal, inexpensive, canteens that sprang up during WW2 to ensure almost everyone could have a hot meal and tea even in hardship. We eat far too much now and far too much sugar. But I have no idea how wives fed families on the rations they had. Everyone tried to keep a few rabbits for the pot or a chicken or two for eggs. 1 egg per person, per week was the ration! I have really reduced my consumerism in the last 10 years. And I am happier for it. I don’t feel the urge to shop all the time, I spend way less. Now things get replaced when broken or no longer fit for purpose. Not just to have the latest model. As for Stanley cups. Somebody is having a laugh. They are the ugliest “cup” I’ve ever seen and completely unnecessary. Love your content. It’s refreshing.
Brilliant topic! With the cost of living crisis in today's society, you always feel like you have to "keep up with the jone's." They have you haven't attitude, let's face it. The world at the moment isn't a safe place, so why not use the knowledge given by our predecessors and put that to good use. This being said, I've a passion for history and dabbled with being frugal. However, now I'm more determined to not just dabble but actually put a lot more thought into things. I used to knit my own socks, well more for other people, I did myself a pair once and they were better/ warmer than any shop bought ones. Food for thought. Thanks Hannah ❤
EXCELLENT video! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Truly love your in-depth analysis of this subject.
I'm in complete agreement with this video. I enjoy the challenge of making do because I'm also saying "not today Bezos".
Funnily enough I was thinking about this at work today as I work for a manufacturing company. I'd like to think I'm not like that. I don't go in for the 'shiney and new so it must be better than the last thing' nonsense. I don't use any social media, apart from RUclips or even watch TV so not bombarded with ads there trying to get you to buy the latest thing. I do cook from scratch a lot. I want a car to get me from A to B and that's it so that's why mines nearly nineteen years old! I only buy clothes when I really really need them. I'm lucky because I can make things and fix things. I have several pieces of furniture I have restored with the oldest being a late Victorian cupboard I use for my larder. I do try and make, reuse and up cycle things. I will always try and fix something before replacing it. I think a lot of the problem is easy credit. Buy now, pay later. Pay over instalments etc. While these things should be available, but just maybe not quite so easy. Don't get me started on the 'must have' phrase advertiser's use.😡
Stick to your guns! The emphasis on profit and consumerism means many don't understand turning down money due to a conflict with ethics, morals and values. So, I applaud your decision and hope you can "stick to your guns!"
Great video, as always :) Also, a good book to read for those interested in the birth of consumerism as we know it is Zola's "Au Bonheur des Dames".
Thanks for sticking to your principles and not selling out. I’ve seen several RUclipsrs go from promoting slow living and enjoying simple pleasures to “look at my latest book/clothing/decor haul” while promoting companies that they received free merc from that I would not be able to afford(even with their promo code) to purchase one item. It’s pretty off putting and has led to a few discussions with friends who express feelings of jealousy and guilt for no longer following said RUclipsrs. So brava!!❤
Wonderful and thoughtful video! (And your charming vintage fireplace added a wonderful ambiance to the discussion!) I’m glad to see things like “underconsumption core” is gaining some popularity. But like the vast population during the rationing of WWII, it would sadly take something equally dramatic to re-wire our brains regarding our consumption habits. Most people have no desire to do without, or “Make do and mend”.
I Belong to Buy nothing site Its great way tofind thing you need or give things away to people who need stuff ! It saves you money ! 🎉
I have managed to stick to a maximum of 5 new clothing items per year for 2 years now. (Except underwear) This comes from a study that shows this is sustainable for the environment. "A total of 5 new pieces of clothing per year; that's the limit we should all strive to follow according to a 2022 report by the Hot Or Cool institute to help the fashion industry become more sustainable. "
Am hoping that in this year, more people throughout the world will think twice before they overspend on vanity items. They will ask themselves: “ Do I really need those Jimmy Choo pumps, does my child really need clothes from Ralph Lauren (yes, I am an American baby boomer); who am I trying to impress? And although those TESLA cars are cute, can I resist the urge to buy one? Does Elon Musk really need my hard earned money?
My gran never had a lot, had one posh dress and a suit which I think was from the 40s or 50s, and 2 pairs of shoes, my mom was probably spoilt cos she was an only child, but mom didn't buy loads of stuff until the 80s, I did follow gran early on only bought what I needed, unfortunately I turned into my mom were I have too much stuff
READ MORE BOOKS PEOPLE. AT LEAST THERE'S NO ADVERTISEMENTS 😊
Such a great video, it really is a breath of fresh air hearing you say the things that I have always believed in and have been very and still are very important to myself. So many people are what I like to call sheepeople, like to follow the latest fads and fashions of the moment . None of this is going to make people happy in the long run, it's just a placebo effect. I count myself lucky that I was brought up by my grandparents whom we're of the wartime generation ethos, I learned so much and continued to do so in my work as a gardener, listening to wonderful accounts from some of my elderly customers and learning new skills and crafts. And finally what you said in regards to rationing, diabetes was the lowest it had ever been at that time, so much so I use a lot of recipes from that time to make meals for us as my partner is a type 1 diabetic. Sorry I've rambled enough Keep up with the wonderful content ❤
Good for you for standing by your principles and ethos 👍
Great video again Your ethics speaks volumes, hence your following Brilliant Take care young lady, and keep to your principles Geoff
If you don't like feminism try patriarchy. Men hate us and want us dead. They will unalive us for any reason or no reason at all. 4B for the win.
I used to watch “minimalist” content about 5 years ago…. After a while it went from “reduce your consumption to buy my merch” and “don’t buy from Black Friday to here’s my Black Friday discount code”. There’s a “eco friendly minimalist vegans” that live in a huge period Cornwall property with an aga, loads of stuff and a designer dog. Smh. If they want those things it’s fine but don’t pretend to be something you are not.
I think I know who you are talking about and I had to stop following her a few years back because she clearly isn’t who she claims to be.
I love thrifting decor! I also decorate with items that belonged to my late grandparents because the items remind me of them. I also have my late aunt's oil painting of dogwood flowers above my fire place. I have lots of things made by my paternal grandmother because she was a quilter and very accomplished dressmaker. I don't have as many things that belonged to my maternal grandmother, but I search for Pennsylvania Dutch decor items at thrift stores because her ancestors were Pennsylvania Dutch and those items connect me to her.
I watched your “when men were men” video. I think this video helps explain that video a lot. Add in that, like women, men are subjected to impossible standards and you can understand why we are all in crisis. They did a study and found male athletes are more likely to commit suicide than non athletes. 2 kids in my son’s baseball club committed suicide 2 years ago. I had watched my son’s mental health decline due to the culture in that club and when he said he didn’t want to play anymore, I didn’t stop him. I know the parents of the two kids made a different choice(one dad worked for the club, and the other parent thought quitting was a bad thing). Anyway. The pressures and toxic cultures around being the best are hard, and the standards are out of reach. My son chose to go straight to work after high school and so many older people questioned why he wasn’t doing college. Anyway, as a parent of 3 kids 18-23 I see a lot of the pressure they face that my husband and I didn’t, and it makes a lot of sense why men in particular struggle.
To make this as short as I can. All the hard work, energy and time you devote to your channel, you deserve compensation if you choose it. What you give your audience is, entertainment, information and history lessons. You yourself said you choose to pay for knowledge and lessons. Why are those instructors more deserving of compensation than you. Never apologize for earning money when you work hard and give a service to others. I very much enjoy your content and look for to seeing more. Please know all of this is said with the utmost respect.
My maternal grandmother never had any wrinkles and she always just used Olay moisturizer. There are way too many products on the market these days, when all any of us really need is a good SPF 50
Great video as always ❤ thank you for your content. I am looking forward to learning more about your membership
Another great video from you and I admire how honest and real you are. We are most definitely an over comsuming world now and its like the wrold has gone slightly mad.we are so far away from human connnection than we have ever been before, its not doing humans any good. In time man will extinct itself with greed! 💛
I had thought that if I were to produce a show, it would be called "Decorating by Chance" and that it would feature me going garbage picking on garbage days to find great stuff that other people throw out.
Would be wonderful if a majority of people in the world would come to terms with this. Unfortunately, “ preaching to the choir”. However, we will go keep trying! Thanks for your passion and effort in your videos 💋
You mum need to have a cameo at some point. I agree with you, I do not see the point in 'the new big thing' when 'the old thing' does the job. I am a certificate welder and trained blacksmith, and the machine which I do my welding was gifted to me by my grandfather, does the job of a brand new one just as well. They have history and a will to live, unlike the new LCD computer BS ones have. And they have my GD old doodles on them, which is fun^^
Hello, from Michigan, USA. I wish I could express to you how much I love your content and how many times I've read things in your sweet British voice and pronunciation😊 Your videos are so well researched and thoughtfully delivered. And very refreshing in this extremely cold midwestern winter! Until next time...🧡
I invite people to walk through the homes in living museums and take note how much or little people actually owned and consumed....not even 100 years ago... We live in a century farm cottage...i think of how the first families lived here...no electricity or plumbing until the 1950s Small shops within walking distance with necessary goods...not much plastic. People bought what they needed...fixed up...recycled...upcycled... Good quality stuff that much could still be used today! Love your channel. Keep up the good work.❤
Great video! I really vibe and support your stance on sponsorship. I really hope the membership goes well for you!
I totally agree with you Hannah ..especially regarding social media where people are portrait as living the perfect life in a perfect home surrounded and clothed in expensive perfection ...I think its very misleading ...and quite dangerous ...others feeling they are inferior and pushed into spending money they don't have ...to be as good or successful
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL.... 🙂 makes me happy
Being mindful and frugal and content seem to be forgotten habits these days. I just subscribed to your channel. ❤
When we married, in the early 80’s, we bought a 2 up 2 down house and it was furnished from a friends aunt dying and them clearing the house, giving us some beautiful Wilton carpets, my great uncles home being cleared after death gave us a spare bedroom set, a friends aunty upgrading their 3 piece suite gave us a lovely suite. I had built my own “bottom drawer” box as a teen, pans, cutlery, tin opener, towels and tea towels etc. When I look at the 2000’s, couples were basically going into Next and getting brand new on tick for their homes when setting up together. I don’t know how they could afford it, and all that debt, just to keep up with the Joneses? No thank you. I was brought up to only buy what I could afford. Today we have a detached paid off 3 bed bungalow in a nice sized garden. No debts, it’s a nice feeling, I feel for young folk today who can’t see themselves buying a home easily, with uni debt, etc. No wonder birth rates are falling. So sad.
I love 2nd hand stuff. When I moved out from my parents house , I went “shopping” in my parents garage. It was all vintage and all free. You can’t beat that.
The amount of bombardment of ads is enormous now compared to when I was a kid in the 1970’s.
❤❤❤❤
Government control of consumption is not usually welcome in today's climate.
I want to commend you for your vision and mission. I could not agree with you more. We over consume and I do believe we consume to compensate or overcompensate for things we think we need. As a much younger woman, my grandmother shared a gem of advice with me. If there is some item, product, appliance, etc. that you want to buy-wait at least 2 weeks minimum and see how well or poorly you are doing without the “item” in your life. Make a mental note or journal the pros and cons of having or not having this “whatever” in your life. It’s amazing how many things you can do without. She then encouraged me to save the money I would have spent if I chose not to make the purchase. I still use this advice today as a much older woman.
I absolutely love your channel ❤
I finally found a channel that I can connect with! Your videos are like a breath of fresh air. ❤❤
The amount of bombardment of ads is enormous now compared to when I was a kid in the 1970’s.
If your rich it's the " asstetice " If your poor... it's called hoarding 😅
Thank you Hannah, I totally agree about over consumption. As I've got older I find I buy less and make more, I've become curiously uninterested in online shops and find I'm hunting out quality over quantity - yes I still hunt the bargain but the focus has changed. My stuff has become smaller but more worthwhile. I have friends who seem to buy everything going and it just appears to be spending money for tge sake of spending money, most of the stuff is used a bit then left to collect dust. I fully support the self rationing of shopping
Very well said and broken down… brilliant! The world today is a throw away society… very sad 😔 I love vintage and buy vintage always hoping for days gone by to return, however I don’t see that happening. I Have made my own little oasis in my home just like you have and it is definitely my happy place. I appreciate all the hard work you put into these videos and I love your channel. Thank you.
I agree with you about buying modern 'tat' which has no intrinsic value. I am old school and only buy antique or vintage items. I grew as a child from parents that were born just before the WW2. I think that kind of impacted them. Mum was posh because her parents had an indoor bathroom. Dad's parents had a loo in the yard. Dad did really well, despite seemingly a low background, although grandad was a self-employed carpenter. Dad went to university and gained a Bsc and went on to gain a BA just after my twin brother and I were born. We moved down south where my father was Head of Modern of Languages into a 'posh house'. I have to tell you, all through our childhood we were ever conscious of frugality through our parents. I've got to be honest...I really enjoy your content but if you asked me to pay for it the frugal bunny would say 'no'. Look at the sponsorship thing again..
THIS is why we did not let our kids watch TV from 1999-2006 ( birth to age 6) and 1 hour a night on school nights. They had never went to a movie theater until my son was 8 and daughter 6! We had a milk man deliver milk and frozen veggies weekly. I was fortunate to be a stay at home mumm until they went to school full time. We taught our kids that on PBS [Public Broadcasting System- the one that childrens programing and Seseme street appears on] you will see comercials that make you want to buy stuff, this stuff we will ignore. WHY? We do not want to create an appetite we have to feed. We rarely ate out. So when we drove by a KFC and my son exclaimed " Look Daddy~ K F C !" My husband threw me that look of disgust like I had just passed gass. I confidently asked my son " Really darling, and just HOW do you know that?" To which he replied " You know mummy, 'PBS Brought to you by K F C' !" 😫😫 What you described is exactly that Created appetites, and then the corresponding action of purchasing. We choose daily our lifestyle AND spending habits. As a grandmum now I am constantly encouraging my kids to see how long they can go and NOT SPEND MONEY!!! It can be done. You do NOT have to spend money daily. God bless. Luv your channel. GG From Minneapolis, MN/USA
Love your content and your honesty, thank you. I feel that rationing is still in place today and for the future. Not everyone can afford luxury items , expensive food or new clothes, appliances or holidays. The cost of living crisis is just another way of rationing.
