They sell toilets that have sinks on the top of the tank. Wouldn't take up any more space
The house I grew up in was built in the 1920's and had the bathroom off the kitchen. It hadnt been added as an after thought but was an original build feature. Alll the water pipes ran from the kitchen so it was easier than running the plumbing up stairs. The coal fire (which had a back boiler) in the living room also heated the water in the cylinder that was in the bathroom. The cylinder helped to keep the bathroom warm and the hot water was available in both the lkitchen and bathroom. Good design really. The toilet was seperate from the bathroom.
I want to no wer these pepole get sofa for 20 and 30 pounds from all the one iv Sean them they cost arm and leg
Placing the bathroom wall to wall with the kitchen is quite smart, regarding plumbing! You need just 1 wall with water in it, so the rest of the house is under no risk of accidents, e.g. drilling a hole while hanging a pictureframe.
Love this wee classic. I always make toasties with my soup.
Looks fantastic!! You should wear an apron to protect those lovely clothes
In older houses the bathrooms were built right off the kitchen because it was more convenient and less costly to connect into the plumbing right there.
As a daughter of a fireman, add a second door for fire safety. At least two exits from a house has been drilled into my brain from at home fire drills. ☮️
Congratulations on paying off your mortgage early. We took on a 'fixer upper' 1950s house and like you, we worked on it over time and paid down on the mortgage saving so much in interest cutting loan time to less than half. It meant being frugal with everything, but it was all worth it. The freedom to do what you wish to your property and the privacy and sense of security is everything in my book. 🙂 Oh and your home is adorable!
Time wasting video
That stove is gorgeous! I also have little space in my kitchen and I'd love to have such a stove! ❤
The room off the kitchen used to be a pantry. I had one in my 1920s house. The toilet upstairs would’ve been called a water closet when it was built. It is an original feature. I had one of those too. Our external door was through the basement and out.
O my goodness ❤that is a beautiful memory you shared with your homes history and the fireplace and stencil❤thank you ,warms the ol'heart❤
I couldn't live in this decor style but it's stunning too see and I love it for you well done ❤
My father was a bombardier in ww2. Never spoke about the war when we were growing up. Have his pictures in uniform and in front of his plane. Next month 2025 and in America 🇺🇸 we will have a felon stepping into the white house. I will be ashamed to be an American when that time comes. Will be visiting England 🏴 and Paris. Great video. Love the u.k.😊😊😊
In all Victorian homes the stairs are off kitchen and led to the maids quarters.I love Victorian homes!
Enjoyable video. Thank you. In the 40s they ate healthy and needed to be creative with food. Very resourceful with the ashes from the fire too. We Americans are so wasteful in some areas but getting better at recycling ♻. The 40s were a very challenging time and many sacrifices needed to be made.
I LOVE this house! So charming! And they were built so well then! And so much character and love from over the years...
I own an old house has well, I have named her in french, la vielle dame! just get enough of charm and uniqueness!
I lived in a railcar design 1929 apartment in South Arkansas for two months, with my two youngest children and absolutely Loved it. ❤I agree, a second exterior door would be nice.
My first house was a 1937 1 bedroom cottage with outhouse out the back. It didn’t even have an internal bathroom originally but one was built into the varandah years before we bought it. The toilet and laundry are still external. A good old Aussie country property, I loved it.
😂😂😂
Lots of places have bathrooms very close to the kitchen. Plumbing is expensive, why run more pipes than you absolutely have to. And it saves on heat loss the less distance the water has to travel. Its also extremely practical to only have one section of your house be exposed to water damage if a pip bursts.
Here's a suggestion: you could always extend the door frame/wall out a foot in the 1-piece water closet to accommodate a half sink. It looks like you have enough room, going by this video.
That is a great, great story. I had the opportunity to walk through my childhood house and discovered they had found beautiful hardwood floors in the kitchen that I never knew were there. I had wanted to buy the house when we lost my Mother, but didn't think I could live with the memories. I spent a night there after we had just sold the house and I regretted selling it. I still, to this day 45 years later, still decorate that house with my furniture in my mind. I know how Mark felt. Everything happens for a reason...you were meant to find him.
I too have an old house (1931, in the U.S.) with quirks. There is no place in the rather large kitchen for a refrigerator, because it originally had an icebox (long gone) built into the lower cabinet, and a cooler above it, going up to the ceiling. There are upper cabinets on two walls, stove on the other, and an archway to the breakfast room and two other doors. One of those goes to the laundry room, and that's where we have the fridge. It's actually convenient because the kitchen counter is just the other side of the doorway. There is also a bathroom with a shower off the laundry room; it's very small and has two doors. Fun to get through with the laundry basket. We have three doors to the outside, though we rarely use the second back door from the laundry room. Unless I misunderstood you, you don't have a second mode of egress in case of fire. In the U.S., in a tall skinny house like yours with a narrow stairwell, a metal fire escape would probably be required, so you could get out through a bedroom window. I hope you have a ladder or something so you are safe. Your house is charming the way you have it decorated.
Your lovely stories are fantastic about that house. Thank you for posting.
Brilliant! When I was your age, I used all my Mother's and Grandmother's dishes, cutlery, glasses, etc. to set beautiful table arrangements. I could open up my own vintage store!! Wish I had a daughter like you to give all these heirlooms, and my own things, to enjoy.
What an absolute delight! Love the fireplaces, love the stairs off the kitchen, love the stove...and absolutely love your pigeons! Your house reminds me of my Grandmother's house that would have been from the 1800's. I have her dining room set where I sat at for my 4th birthday. Beautiful memories. I have a big old 120 year old farm house style (in Canada) and every room has something quirky about it...and my house has such a good energy to it. The only thing that is missing is a fireplace. If I ever win a lottery....she's going to be fixed up just like she once was. A big applause for your love of beauty.
You're so very lucky to still have your mum. ❤
I would say that the plumbing stuff fixes where you put the bathroom or laundry.
My concern with only one exit is if there's a fire. If there was a fire in the kitchen at night, how would you get out?
You have such a beautiful home! I hope you don't move anytime soon☺
When I lived in my grandparents’ house, which was built in the early 1950s, they had an internal vacuum system. I loved it! You didn’t have to drag around a vacuum unit, only a long hose you plugged into each room. Such a quirky option! Your home is adorable 😊
Let me get this clear: you have a hose attached to the wall in each room of your house? Does the dirt then just go into the wall? Is there a filter you have to clean out?
Totally agree! I love it as well. I can't believe all houses don't have a central vac system. If I were to do it all over again, I'd install that in a blink.
@@SusanForeman1963 lol yes. I believe they had a container that collected the dirt in the basement. I never had to do anything with it, so I’m not sure how often they emptied it. I’ve only seen one other house with this tech, but I’ve seen it in old MCM magazines, etc.
My home also has a bathroom right off the kitchen, and I also like to open the bathroom window (in warm weather, unlike the present) when I bathe. I'm out in the country, so hearing the birds and insects and distant train whistle from time to time is lovely! I also like the handsplit beams in the basement and our lack of central air/heat. There's nothing like a woodstove or fireplace to promote togetherness in cold weather!
Probably had a bowl and pitcher wash stand in bedroom. Just used that after bathroom
For the upstairs toilet, rather than putting a side lavatory which will be in the way, do as they do in Japan and put a lavatory in the toilet tank top.
Thank you for sharing your new home and how you were able to pay off your mortgage. You were correct in stating that others have not been forthcoming with how they were able to pay off their homes, which places you head and shoulders above them in my estimation. May the LORD GOD bless you and your family.🙂
Love your kitty...she sure is enjoying your house and garden.
For the front door, instead of color stain glass, try clear and frosted glass. I had that on my front door, it was so pretty, plus it gave better light than a color would.
I grew up in a house built in 1898 which had no alterations at all after the 1920s when electricity and central heating was put in, but it was built for a multimillionaire so it was pretty luxurious even by the standards of today. The only problem was it was designed for a staff of 6 full-time servants and we only had a cleaner and an au pair
How lovely
I enjoy watching you in England I'm in USA , I 've read a lot period books
My Apartment was built within the last 30 years and the bathroom is very close to the kitchen too.
What a Lovely story!
Weird or not, I love your little house, and am happy you're preserving all its history! I've lived in a couple of places with only one door, and I know what you mean. Currently I'm luxuriating in a small place that has 4 doors! An embarrassment of doors.
It's very common in homes built when indoor plumbing was still fairly new to have bathrooms adjacent to the kitchen- because of the plumbing. In colder climates it not only kept the plumbing to a minimum, it also helped to keep the pipes from freezing.
You can get toilets with a little hand basin in the cistern. They are a good choice where there isnt room for a separate sinkf
I had a much loved little house in which the bathroom was partially in a bump out on the side. Very small and was likely originally a closet.
The sink needs to go above the toilet tank. I’ve seen them in other videos. If you put it where you showed in the video it will be in the way.
