I only witnessed one win in person as well - 2015 Martinsville! One of the greatest moments of my life.

I remember this race and while I watched it, I had feeling of dejavu. Charlotte motor speedway 1996 he had a 111 point lead, started overheating. Ray Evernham called him in and put water in it. Later it blew up. He nearly lost the point lead because Terry Labonte won the race. I think that Charlotte cost him the championship in 1996. The chase cost him the championship in 2004, 2007 and 2014. In my mind he is an 8 time champion. NASCAR watered down the racing and has ruined this sport.

You are exactly right In my mind he is a 8 time champion you can think Brian France for that I am glad his ass got what was coming to him but the problem is he has money so shit won't happen to him drinking and high as hell on oxycodone driving on the road he should at least get a year in jail

    • @michaeld6147

He would definitely have 6. Had he not blown that 100+ pt lead with a few races left in 1996, that would make 7. 2004 would be the tossup. Johnson had a big pt lead, and his team started experimenting with things because they knew his lead would be erased when the Chase started. He had several DNF's before the reset that knocked his pts lead down. Had there not been a Chase, they wouldn't have done any experimentation and probably beat Gordon in points that year.

@@daniellongworth7513 Haha....but who's you're driver again? 4 Championships and 93 wins and I think 81 poles, isn't bad. Almost 800 starts... you guys are right above the points Championship didn't change he would have at least seven. But it is what it is and I haven't watched NASCAR since 2015.

Ah 2007... the season that officially ended my diehard fandom of the sport. The fact that Gordon didn't win the title that year is inexcusable.

Woah. I heard the announcers say something as if it were relavant that I haven't heard in 10 years...."points".
Remember when points actually mattered and it wasn't just about getting that one win and move on?
    I miss those days.

This was the race that i became a Jeff fan. I know i was late to the party because of age, but it was still a good ride and i wouldn't go back and start rooting for any other driver. 2007 was a fun year to be a Jeff fan. Albeit, bittersweet year because of how he was robbed of a championship.
