This was the absolute height of Jeff Gordon hatred. The year before he won 13 races dominated the entire season. He followed that up by winning the pole, the race, and the winston million in this Daytona 500 to open the season...not to mention he beat Earnhardt to do it. The hatred was immense.
He may have won 13 times in 1998, but Earnhardt has a major spotlight when it comes to that season, he finally won the Daytona 500! Even though it was his only win of 1998, he didn't care as long as he won the 500, I would say the same. Although he easily had the inaugural primetime Pepsi 400 in the bag until a pit stop miscue with tire cost him a shot at the sweep. Jeff and Dale won three-consecutive 500's (Gordon in 1997 and 1999) and Dale Earnhardt (1998). Pretty strange to finally hear, "Dale Earnhardt trying to win his second."
That moment was the pinnacle of Everham/Gordon duo: 3 titles out of 4 seasons and 2 daytona 500 wins out of the last 3...they'd split a mere 7 months later. Tragic
My favorite of Jeff's 3 Daytona 500 wins. All 3 were special, but holding off Dale Earnhardt, who was hungry to win a 2nd Daytona 500 in a row doesn't get much better.
nascarfanatic2425 started watching Nascar when I was 6 years old (97 season) I was a Gordon fan. And as most Gordon fans know, it was sometimes tough being a Gordon fan with all the diehard Earnhardt fans lol. This race will always stand out as my all-time favorite. Watching Gordon hold off Earnhardt like that was so AWESOME!!
The Rooster5150 My favorite of all time was last year's 2015 fall Martinsville race. I was there, and I got to see Jeff get his final win! It was a blast!
I'll never forget this race, we were on a road trip and just about to lose the MRN station, we stopped on the highway shoulder so we wouldn't lose the radio signal before the race ended. What a race that was
I Remember this race and that shot at the end was a Dale Earnhardt congratulatory bang on the door. You dont see that much anymore nowadays. There is fierce competition but it is not like back in the day. There was more comradary back then I think.
BillyBong05 That is why that rule is in place today, it was the pass in 1997 below Bill Elliot and the pass below Rusty Wlalace in 1999 that started the foul line at Daytona and Talladega.
@@knight24481 nah, both those passes you mentioned were clean and exciting.. it was all the crashes from guys not doing the pass under the line as well executed as Gordon's were that caused the rule
Two legends and the best drivers going for the win and finishing 1 and 2: (24) Jeff Gordon & (3) Dale Earnhardt Sr. Two Daytona 500 Champions, and Cup Champions.
Of all the races Gordon won, I feel like this was his best, and it’s the one I remember the most as a Gordon fan growing up. Darlington in ‘97 might be tied for first on that list though, haha. But that daring pass into turn 1 on Rusty, plus having to fight Dale off for 10 laps after that... that’s hard to top.
An interesting thing out of this race is that, despite everyone wanting the Gordon/Earnhardt rivalry to be something, they actually had planned to work together to get to the front at the end of this race. Ray Evernham and Richard Childress set the deal up & they went with it.
you think it's stupidity that he was a 2x 500 champ for this move? the move was legal back then and won him the race, what today has to do with it is irrelevant dude these guys are designed to do everything to win and jeff did just that... badass move.
Rusty Wallace basically handed Gordon this race, it was his to win until that foolish move by Gordon on the apron of the track. Rusty saw that bonehead Gordon on the apron was going to cream Ricky Rudd had he not moved up to allow Gordon back up on the track. That could have had a very bad ending had Rusty not moved up allowing Gordon room to do that. Rusty I believe payed Gordon a visit in victory lane even telling him this. Gordon pulled a similar move at a New Hampshire race with Dale Jarrett and Jarrett got in his face about it at the end of the race.
Gordon won this race in 97 passing bill elliott the same exact way with a handful of laps remaining so clearly it's a move that got him a lot of success and if you think that's being foolish then about 80% of drivers who made this sport were foolish.. honestly you just sound salty gordon could do things on that track few others could do. this move here he set rusty up way back in turns 3 and 4 then as he got his run he faked high and then pulled it to the bottom. Rudd being there sure made it more exciting but certainly gordon didn't see rudd until he was already committed. that's good racing sorry your guy didn't win.
I'm sure the 24 team created a lot of new rules that NASCAR would mandate. At the time, Gordon's, "below the line stunt" worked out. The guy had balls doing it. However, I think he already knew what he was doing. Everyone wants to say Rusty saved him or Ricky Rudd's life, Total BS. Gordon knew he could thread the needle from pure talent. Years of experience. Even if Rusty pushed him down, Gordon would've pushed up to prevent a wreck. He had enough time. Basically, he caught Rusty of guard, then Rusty misjudged how much he went off the bottom. Rusty got played. Gordon was good at that with Rusty. I remember 2 Bristol races where Rusty got played. Just face it--Jeff Gordon is a racer's champ!
Michael Dicks he said that Jeff Gordon was hated so much because it was the year after he won 13 races in route to his second championship. He won the pole and the race, plus beating Dale Earnhardt to do it just made the hatred from the fans even worse.
In the middle of 2001 after Jimmy Spencer protested that Mike "Magic Shoes" McClaughlin raced dirty by blocking him and several others by going below the yellow line in the 2001 Subway 300 at Talladega. McClaughlin won the race, Spencer protested, next thing you know Tony Stewart is black-flagged in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona a couple of months later, despite being forced below the line. Stewart came across the line 6th because he didn't answer it. He was dropped to 18th as a result.
Honestly I feel the torch had already been passed years ago. As great as Dale was, in 97 and 98 it was all Gordon, Jarrett, Martin, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton. Dale was there but he wasn't as good as he once was, which is sadly the stage Jeff finds himself in today as Jimmie, Keselowski, Harvick, Kyle Busch and the rest of them duke it out. But not to worry, Kyle Larson will be here soon.
Evernham knew his days with the team were coming to a close during the post race interview. Not really focused on another championship, just taking it one race at a time.
Folks, after this years 500 gets going with the new car want to go back to watch this and compare the sound of the cars and racing ability. I bet this race here wins out right!
Now as of 2023, the driver leading the Daytona 500 with 10 laps to go (Lap 190) failed to win it 33 times out of the 65 times we've run this prestigious event. Many drivers who actually led lap 200 in a 500 that ended in a GWC finish did not win the event. Notable drivers that led lap 200 but did not win it include Mark Martin (2007) and Kyle Busch (2023).
Why is everybody saying this is the race the touch was passed if you asked me it was passed way back in 95 Earnhardt was never on Gordon's level since then
earnhardt was hurt at dega in 96 while winning 2 races earlier in the year and being top 3 in points . from the dega accident - till around 99 earnhardt was not as competitive due to injury and just poor performance however RCR turned it around in 00 and earnhardt actually had a better season the gordon in 2000 but the torch was passed around 98 ~
In 1996 Earnhardt got banged up physically at Talladega. He wasn't the same after that. Then he got hurt at Atlanta and he was racing hurt again. Gordon was lucky throughout his career he never suffered serious injury. When you get hurt it takes some of the fire out of you. Look at Ernie Irvan after he got hurt at Michigan....he was good but not great.

Share those drugs you were on when you typed that shit
The Gordon hate was so much that it actually became acceptable to cheer for Earnhardt again.
Winston Million was won in 97, probably thinking of the Winston No Bull 5 Million which was easier to win than the original Winston Million.
He may have won 13 times in 1998, but Earnhardt has a major spotlight when it comes to that season, he finally won the Daytona 500! Even though it was his only win of 1998, he didn't care as long as he won the 500, I would say the same. this is my favorite race of all time. I remember watching this as a kid and was and still am a huge Jeff Gordon fan.
Vintage Jeff Gordon at his peek.
we will never see a rival like this ever again when Jeff and Dale raced they where both gold they always brought out the best in one another
Except they rarely went head to head for a win, they mostly won when the other was not having a good day.

That last lap is epic. Inside outside move, Jeff was driving that car going 180 with both his eyes on the rear view mirror.
I'm a Gordon fan and this is my favorite win of his. I did feel bad for Mike Skinner, he was really fast this day and never got any help.
It was also a mistake by Buddy Baker, he corrected himself later, it was actually 1.7 seconds.

Michael Dicks he said that Jeff Gordon was hated so much because it was the year after he won 13 races in route to his second championship. He won the pole and the race, plus beating Dale Earnhardt to do it just made the hatred from the fans even worse.
