What's up guys! I think I've found a way around the block by RUclips, so I've re-uploaded the video. I loved the track and think it would be great for people who didn't catch it the first time round. It was up for only a week or so,🤞 It can stay up this time. Have a great one -Syed
So good. You really should dig up his appearance on Saturday Night Live, where Belushi comes out to join him mid-performance doing a fantastic Joe Cocker impression.
I was there. We were mesmerized. You're right, he would become possessed by the music. He often stated that since he never learned how to play an instrument, he would become the instrument.
I was there. It was Sunday after noon...a storm was blowing up! The atmosphere was full of electricity. We were all feeling SOMETHING was coming....and if we could just help each other, things would be ok.....
His magnificent version of this Beatles song is legendary and 🔥🔥🔥. Many RUclips Music Reactors have done this exact performance. Such a joy to see you ALL smile, jaw drop, and explode with pure respect for this man's performance. The opening GUITAR 🎸 is killer. The backup female vocalists missed the gig ( stuck in traffic ❗) so the guys in the band filled in ...singing in falsetto. But there is another great live version of this exact song...with about 4 female singers AND the great LEON RUSSELL on guitar. Wow. Look for that. 🎵🎵🎵.Great reaction as always.
Here's an FYI; The background singers got stuck and couldn't get to the venue on time. The band did a commendable job filling in under the circumstances.
I saw Joe in 1994 at Woodstock. (10 am on Saturday morning) and it was a perfect way to set off the day and one of the highlights of the show. This is from Woodstock 1969. (The original one)
Joe is from northern England. After doing this song, Lennon and McCartney invited him to Apple Records and pleaded with him to redo as many Beatles songs as possible. He obliged them by also doing, SHE CAME IN THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW, another classic. THE LETTER, FEELIN ALL RIGHT, and YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL are also tops on his list.
Check out the film Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a documentary of the tour he did 1970. Leon Russel was the music director for the band, Rita Coolidge is one of the singers.
Aboulely Iconic Performace !!! What a voice ,what a Man ,what a Performance !!!! Just wish i could have been there!!! The Man's gone ,but What a Musical Legacy to leave ?!!!!... Sheffield Steel !!! Imortality doesent get much closer than this !!... X
The back up singers got snarled in traffic so the guitarists had to do a little falsetto going on! 😀 NOW, watch FEELING ALRIGHT, YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HAT ON, CAN'T FIND MY WAY HOME, and so many others!
This was one of the legendary performances from Woodstock 1969, with Santana & Jimi Hendrix Experience. (My all time fave live performance is still Santana doing "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock.) I had the pleasure of seeing Joe Cocker in concert once in a smaller venue in Brisbane and it is in the top 3 live concerts I have seen. The man and his band were captivating.
I was fortunate enough to be at Woodstock to see this amazing performance. I also attended his concert at the Fillmore East later on the same year. The song to check out from that concert is "The Letter".
Joe in the 80's, gave us some great music, many were soundtrack songs ..Love lift us up , from An Officer and a Gentlemen...but my favorite. LEAVE YOUR HAT ON, from the movie9 and 1/2 weeks. Triple dog dare you to react to LEAVE YOUR HAT ON! 🤣👍😁
I used to listen to this song every afternoon as it was the intro song for "The Wonder Years" show and I loved that show so of course this song has a special place in my heart as well. Fantastic performance by Joe, what a voice. Great reaction
Here's one for you. He had a hit song named "YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL" I saw a video of him singing it in a small venue and he's older, but man that guy can bring out the most in any song. it's a great song and video. you did a good job on this reaction Sy, keep'em coming
The backup singers were stuck in a colossal traffic jam on the road to Woodstock. According to Ray Charles the finest three soul singers in this time were Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye & Joe Cocker. If you hear the Beatles original song, you see what a great arrangement this is as well. He made some beautiful covers of Dylan songs among others.
Never mind air guitar, Joe played air band! Every instrument, every accent and pulse of the music passes visibly through his body. I invariably and inescapably think of Ray Charles when I hear him, particularly this performance. My late cousin and I went to see the movie, 'Woodstock' when it came out in the early 70s and it was a transformative experience, the incredible music and career-making and defining performances absolutely blew my mind. Great reaction, perceptive and spot on as per usual 👏 👌 cheers, mate 👍
I watched the Woodstock documentary & they said that Joe Cocker's female backup singers couldn't get to the stage to perform on time due to the insane traffic to the event and these guys that normally don't sing had to do the backup vocals.
In my opinion this performance is the greatest I have ever seen of a singer putting every ounce of his heart body and soul into the delivery...he truly "became" the song and it threw him around the stage in a way that could only be described as supernatural. I've watched this hundreds of times, maybe a thousand times and I still enjoy it as if it were the first.
JOE.....GIGANTE .....ESPLENDIDO ...SIN PALABRAS ..LO ESCUCHE EN 1970.....Y AUN ME EMOCIONA , ES UNA MEZCLA TOTAL DE ROCK , MUSICA DE LOS SUBTERRANEOS Y PRINCIPALMENTE DE LA GENTE DE LOS CAMPOS DE ALGODON . PURO SENTIMIENTO .....LLORO....¡¡¡¡
He was the male equivalent of Janice Joplin in his soulfulness and uniqueness. Check out his version of "You are so beautiful"-Check out Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart and Me and Bobby McGee, Ball & Chain"-Amazing!
I have seen him twice, the first time was Mad Dogs and Englishman, one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Then about 10 yrs later in DC . He is fantastic 😊
Talking of live 100% give it all performances, Janis Joplin at Monterrey Pop festival.. her debut , its sublime ., raw emotion ... Mama Cass Elliott of the Mamas and Papas is in the audience, spellbound
Ahh amazing performance...bit of trivia..in the studio version Joe does, Jimmy page plays guitar on the track and BJ Wilson from procol harum plays drums
First time I saw this I was wondering if it was some kind of palsy or overdose, but subsequently, and after witnessing many more performances by Joe Cocker, I started to feel like him when listening to his music. All in!
Simply he was not an American!!! In the USA he celebrated his greatest successes from 1969 to 1975, then only two "Film" singles reached the top ten, no more albums. Since Civilized Man in 1984, every one of his 14 albums has reached the top ten in Central Europe/Germany+Switzerland. Here he had the most loyal fans and was at festivals a lot. In my twenties, I bought the critically acclaimed Sheffield Steel 1982, which flopped commercially. He was a cover guy; I'm thinking of Have A Little Faith In You 1994/95; but I love the John Hiatt's original (hint to Syed: bluesy) at least as much.
Credit to you, Syed. You capture in words the emotion and intent of the artists you are reacting to so beautifully. Thanks. I've watched this performance hundreds of times. It's one of the highest impact films of all time for me. Great stuff.
If you had seen my Dad in the 70s, you'd think he looked like a crazy man. He had the long hair and full beard. He also never missed a day of work and was a great Dad. It was the times. ❤️✌️
As an 80's kid, I was introduced to this by The Wonder Years. Head of the Class came out a few years later and I've been enamored by the 60's ever since! It didn't hurt that my mom had pretty much all of The Beatles 45's and when my dad bought a stereo system with a record player around 1987 I delved into it all!
The opinion of the time was that Joe was playing air bass guitar whilst singing, and being a bassist myself, I can agree with his hand and finger movements that it is true. What a performer and this is one of those covers that exceeds the original version sung by Ringo Starr by a country mile. Love your reaction Syed, have just subbed, take care buddy.
Joe Cocker "The Letter" live from The Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour, one of the great rock performances ever recorded. He is on fire. Also has the great Leon Russell playing the heck out of the piano.
Hey Syed. I am new to your channel having just recently watched a bunch of your back catalogue, so now I have finally caught up to a recent one. Just want to say you do a fantastic job. I am really impressed by your insights into the music. You really get it. I watch a lot of reaction channels and you are one of the best. As an enthusiastic amateur musician, I was surprised when you mentioned you are not a musician, since many of your insights would typically only come from a fellow musician. You have a good ear. All the best. Keep up the great work.
Bless you for reuploading this one!! Understand... I was still cooking in my mom's tummy when this song was released, but I promise... it is part of the soundtrack of my life!! I felt these words as a very young girl and I still do as a 52 y/o woman. Good music is timeless and important. I saw a quote years ago and it resonated with me. I'd like to share it with you now... " Artists are modern day prophets."- Morgan Freeman. I think this song falls under that category.😊 So happy you felt this one!!! Great reaction!! Peace, light and love...💞
personally, i think that his spasmic performances give him that stage presence that i find kinda fasinating. he does get into the songs that he sings and has an interesting voice that i like.
You are a young guy so I’m not sure if you know the significance of Woodstock. I hope you are able to take the time to watch some documentaries on Woodstock. Was a once in a lifetime perfectly flawed but amazing event that should not be forgotten. I am sure you would appreciate watching more Woodstock content showing the magnitude of the event. ~Peace
You're genuinely one of the most thoughtful reactors when it comes to music that I've seen. I like how much thought you put into your analysis and taking in everything. If you want some more insanely good live performances, check out Frank Zappa, Dio, or The Marshall Tucker Band. Three totally different groups of musicians, but all INCREDIBLE live performers and legends in their own right.
I truly appreciate your passion for the music of my youth, I want you to consider how could anyone call today's people of my generation prejudice? We lived and loved the music of our time. The music reflected who we are, now in our late fifties and sixties and beyound. Yes the musicians inspired us to live and love life but it was their audience that inspired them. I do know music can bring people together, sadly it can also separate. My mother (GRHS) used to say "Young people need take special cation the influences from within and without they allow in the body and mind, Testosterone and Hormones in young bodies is more dangerous then fear of consequence" So you see what my generation choose as influences in the late sixties, seventies and eighties for the most part was healthy for the mind, I began to question musical influence as the nineties and beyond rolled on, I found the need to choose my music more wisely...my 20 something son agree. Keep up the good work my friend!
By the way John Lennon, said that this song was Joe's now. Whenever I want to listen to this song I NEVER go to The Beatles I always think of it as Joe Cocker's song.
You're right, Joe took everyone to church that day. His Mad Dogs and Englishman tour a few years later wash phenomenal. His music director was the amazing Leon Russell. You need to check out Leon too.
Loving your insight/analysis of these classic tunes, Syed! If you haven't yet, could you react to Santana's 'Soul Sacrifice' from Woodstock. Make sure it's the long version, with the full drum solo by Michael Shrieve. I'm sure you'll love it! Thanks! ✌🏻💀
Back during the original cast of Saturday Night Live, John Belushi did the most spot on imitations of Joe Cocker. He even tricked the viewers into thinking they're ally had Joe Cocker as the musical guest! Everyone thought it was hilarious! That is - everyone except Joe Cocker, who vowed to never appear on the show, so it was a really big deal when time passed and during either a Skit or a musical performance ( I can't remember ) there were TWO Joe Cockers performing! Of course one was John Belushi and one was actually him! No warning or pre-announcements, again, just stunned the viewers, and the funniest part? You could barely tell them apart! You can find the Belushi skits on RUclips, and both performing together as well and it's really worth checking out! May I also suggest you react to Joe Cocker's "Unchain My Heart" "Feelin Alright?" "Ain't No Sunshine" "You Are So Beautiful" "Summer in the City" "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" & "Up Where We Belong" He has a lot of good songs to check out!
As I said first view:- Dig deeper. Joe always did covers, but he managed to "own" nearly all he did. Especially with Grease Band - "Mad Dogs" (with Leon Russell and Bobby Keys - Stones sax) - Go for it!
Check out Mad Dogs and Englishmen, with Leon Russell, Joe Cocker and many more famous musicians, Delta Lady is on this album, it's well worth worth listening to.
Also 'The Letter', 'Space Captain', 'Cry Me A River', another Beatles song 'She Came in through the Bathroom Window' and The Stones 'Honky Tonk Women'. Brilliant live recordings and all in film too.
This is a great performance, but there's a better one, taken from the concert film of the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. Joe's performance there is just as passionate, but he's backed by the full complement of backup singers, who really bring the song's gospel nature to full fruition.
And the world discover Joe Cocker... He said "I'm not musician, I can't play no musical instrument, I just can play my soul". I watch this for almost 50 years now and feel the same emotion than the first day. 💜
if you’ve watched this 100 times like I have, you’ll notice he does kind of an unintentional James Brown thing at the end; he’s jamming out so hard and is headed back to the mic to shout some more…and about halfway there decides nope, gonna jam some more lol. Kills me every time. 😊
Great reaction. Joe Cocker conveyed emotion through his song like few other artist have done. You may want to check out his live performance, "You Are So Beautiful" (Nearly Unplugged version).
A great Beatles tune made better by Joe! The highway gridlock to Woodstock prevented the backup singers from getting there. People walked miles because it was so jammed. British rockers in the 60’s were deep students of the great blues masters and soul shouters from America.
Thick as a brick - jethro tull is a “concept” album that I think you should check out I think it’d nice to analyze the lyrics and the instruments used, it’s a very unique album it is my 2nd favorite album
Many people have a different image in mind when talking complete freedom. This performance comes to my mind. I wish I could allow myself to achieve it.
This is his most passionate performance of that same song. Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen With a Little Help from My Friends You have to copy and paste, there is no direct link.
A great singer and a truly great cover version. If you are going to do Joe Cocker, do not leave out his version of "The moon is a Harsh Mistress" which is just sublime.
I saw an interview with him. When asked why his hands and arms kept moving or jerking when he sang, he said he practiced before the mirror for years while pretending he was playing a guitar.
What's up guys! I think I've found a way around the block by RUclips, so I've re-uploaded the video. I loved the track and think it would be great for people who didn't catch it the first time round. It was up for only a week or so,🤞 It can stay up this time. Have a great one

Thanks for the re-up!
Thanks for the re upload, I missed it first time.
So good. You really should dig up his appearance on Saturday Night Live, where Belushi comes out to join him mid-performance doing a fantastic Joe Cocker impression.
I knew it! I started to watch and had this intense feeling of deja vu
what happened to the dead end street one yesterday ?
I was there. We were mesmerized. You're right, he would become possessed by the music. He often stated that since he never learned how to play an instrument, he would become the instrument.
His voice is absolutely beautiful. My favorite singer. Every song on every album was killer also He was a class act
I was there. It was Sunday after noon...a storm was blowing up! The atmosphere was full of electricity. We were all feeling SOMETHING was coming....and if we could just help each other, things would be ok.....

Every tune Joe covered he did his own way & did it very well. Always a favourite performer to see.
It has been said a song hasn’t been sung until Joe Cocker sings it.
This is why. ❤
Here's an FYI; The background singers got stuck and couldn't get to the venue on time. The band did a commendable job filling in under the circumstances.

Fun fact: Jimmy Page played guitar on Joe Cocker’s studio version, which came out in ‘68.
Joe Cocker oozed soulfulness. He put everything he had into every song he sang. Definitely one of a kind talent.

The best performance at Woodstock, I'm 71 years of age and it still blows me away, beyond brilliant!!!!!!!
The accent is a Yorkshire one, he's from Sheffield and seen as a national treasure ❤

This is my favorite Woodstock performance
Don't forget Creadance Clearwater Revival.
I saw him live many years later at the MGM in Vegas. Great show , lucky to have seen him!

He was inspired by the blind gospel-soul legend Ray Charles vocally and with his physicality.

Great reaction, perceptive and spot on as per usual 👏 👌 cheers, mate 👍
One of the best cover of a Beatle song in history.
Paul Mc Cartney said it was the only version, and he said JC had taken the right to call it his own.
@@sallybannister6224 yeah sometimes it takes a writer to admit that. Humility from Macca
I watched the Woodstock documentary & they said that Joe Cocker's female backup singers couldn't get to the stage to perform on time due to the insane traffic to the event and these guys that normally don't sing had to do the backup vocals.
Then watch the live version one year earlier from 1968 on BBC, it is here on YT; by far better than this version and also no female singers.
I was there and yes, the girls got stuck in traffic. We left our van about 2 hrs away and walked the rest of the way. Getting there was half the fun.
Absolutely , a Truly Astounding performance !!!

His song.... LEAVE YOUR HAT ON..is a must!!💥💥
Randy Newman's song
that guitar work that tore through your soul was done on the recording by Page. It was the last studio work he done prior to zeppelin.
When Paul McCartney heard this performance he just said he should do more of their song!
He was the male equivalent of Janice Joplin in his soulfulness and uniqueness. Check out his version of "You are so beautiful"-Check out Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart and Me and Bobby McGee, Ball & Chain"-Amazing!
I saw him in concert in the early 70s. His voice had this quality of reverberating through your chest. He was truly amazing.
I have seen him twice, the first time was

Probably been said before. The backing singer’s flight was held up, so the band had to sing their part. Still bloody awesome.

They believed Music could change the World. For a while it did.
This is iconic! Oh the memories.
It’s one of those covers that takes the song to another place.
Truly remarkable, and in the top 10 covers of all time, and arguably the no 1.
Ahh amazing performance...bit of trivia..in the studio version Joe does, Jimmy page plays guitar on the track and BJ Wilson from procol harum plays drums

How is this man not in the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame?
Because it’s just a place in Cleveland that called itself that. It’s a shithole for hair bands and top 40 tripe 😅
Because the RRHOF are A-holes.
The rock n roll hall of fame is a joke!
Who cares about the R&R Hall of Fame?

For the Beatles it was almost a throwaway song and pretty light even for that. Joe made it an epic event.
Joe Cocker "The Letter" live from The Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour, one of the great rock performances ever recorded. He is on fire. Also has the great Leon Russell playing the heck out of the piano.

Up there with the best performances I've ever seen. Oh and one of the very rare times when a version of a Beatles song is better than the original.
not sure if it's been mentioned, but the story goes that Ringo saw his performance and said "It's not our song anymore.. it belongs to you"
Paul said it too.

As I said first view:- Dig deeper. Joe always did covers, but he managed to "own" nearly all he did. Especially with Grease Band - "Mad Dogs" (with Leon Russell and Bobby Keys - Stones sax) - Go for it!
Check out Mad Dogs and Englishmen, with Leon Russell, Joe Cocker and many more famous musicians,
Delta Lady is on this album, it's well worth worth listening to.
By far my favorite cover of any Beatles song ever! (and that's what Rock n Roll is all about)
This is 1 for ure memory bro. Awesome performance!!!
And the world discover Joe Cocker... He said "I'm not musician, I can't play no musical instrument, I just can play my soul". I watch this for almost 50 years now and feel the same emotion than the first day. 💜
I enjoyed watching your reaction and commentary. 👍
his air guitar rocks
if you’ve watched this 100 times like I have, you’ll notice he does kind of an unintentional James Brown thing at the end; he’s jamming out so hard and is headed back to the mic to shout some more…and about halfway there decides nope, gonna jam some more lol.
This was Woodstock..Everyone was looking wild 😏
"in the music"? LOL. Don't forget this was Woodstock in 1969 and the whole scene was a pharmaceutical cornucopia!
Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Joe Cocker and Leon Russell tour. Ticket for an Airplane is my favorite from childhood
Joe is incredible. Hes got the spirit of LSD runnin through him.
And Johnny W. and Jim B. also helped for sure 😅
That organ is the classic Hammond B3, renouned in rock music, deep purple, Boston, etc. I play keyboards, that organ is a freakin; beast
I hope you'd consider doing an analysis of the entire Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Joe would become completely possessed by the music. RIP Joe.
This is his most passionate performance of that same song.
Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen With a Little Help from My Friends
You have to copy and paste, there is no direct link.
It's the spirit of the music and LSD!!!!! That's what getting by with a little help from his friend s!!!
After this performance Paul McCartney said, "we wrote the song but Joe owns it".
Nothing like this wonderful love you
A great singer and a truly great cover version. If you are going to do Joe Cocker, do not leave out his version of "The moon is a Harsh Mistress" which is just sublime.
You must see the movie, Mad Dogs and Englishmen, is Epic!!!
In 1970 Joe, Leon Russell, Rital Coolidge et al went on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and a film came of it. Great film.
The Beatles said he owned this song after this performance.
Joe never gets the credit he deserves for inventing air guitar! LOL
I saw an interview with him. When asked why his hands and arms kept moving or jerking when he sang, he said he practiced before the mirror for years while pretending he was playing a guitar.
The late John Belushi did a great imitation of him. I'm sure there's some vids.
Original air guitar 🎸
