    Joe Cocker was an English singer known for his gritty, bluesy voice & dynamic stage performances that featured expressive body movements. He recorded a few Beatles' songs "With A Little Help From My Friends", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" & "Something". Other hit songs were "You Are So Beautiful", "Up Where We Belong" (a duet with Jennifer Warnes), "Delta Lady", "Darling Be Home Soon", "Cry Me A River", "Feelin' Alright", "The Letter" etc.

    I went to the Weeley popfestival in 1971, near Harwich in England. The Isle of Wigth popfestival was cancelled at the last minute, so most of that intended Wight audience and artists, already on their way, came to that modest festival at the small village of Weeley. At some point it was announced: "Ladies and gentlemen; ... Joe Cocker !!", and he was not even on the programme.
    Just like at Woodstock, this festival became a lovely chaos. Also one day of rain. No facilities for thousands and thousands of people, no sufficient catering. And also, this was very early days in the popfestival phenomenon. Most everything was improvised, and incomparable with nowadays festivals. This was serious fun and survival, and great music.

    • @tubularap
      @tubularap 10 месяцев назад

      Let me add, that it was, just like Woodstock, good vibes, great atmosphere, submerged in the great music of the time, and with likeminded people in so large numbers.
      Being a long-heared hippy made you stand out in the normal streets, and here you were all together.
      The village folks were lovely, trying to cater for us hapless youngsters, who now had become hungry. On our seeping bags we lay and listened, and slept, and listened for three days in total, and some more. It took me half an hour to navigate my way from the middle of the huge field before the stage, to the edge to take a piss in the bushes, where everyone was getting their relief. Walking over en between thousands of people laying on or in their sleeping bags, drinking, smoking, talking, making love, and sleeping. This was the freedom we longed for, and wished for everybody.
      Great times, and I can only hope they will come back for all coming generations.

    • @tubularap
      @tubularap 10 месяцев назад

      Fun fact: Weeley village usually organised a yearly donkey race, but one guy had heard about that new thing 'popfestival'. So for that year they organised that.

    This is a Beatles song, but Joe took it into blues-land. Yeah, the infamous background singers 🤣 Truth is, the REAL background singers got stuck on the road so the band did the best they could. Fortunately, Joe was his epic self. People were fascinated by his "flailing" hands, but if you pay attention, Joe is playing air guitar, and , occasionally, conducting. He could wring a song dry. "You Are So Beautiful" is another beauty from Joe.

      I loved Joe Cocker back in the sixties. I actually thought he had a neuromuscular disease because of the way the music moved through him, lol. My husband and I married in 1971, and he had grown up in England. He was actually the one who told me that Joe wasn't what we called "spastic" back in the day. I was a little disappointed when I found out the truth. No one could bring the blues to rock like Joe Cocker!
