Music made Joe react with his whole body. Some people thought he had a physical illness, but the only affliction he had was his love for music, and the way it affected him. He was great in concert.
Joe Walsh is exactly the same, but it is his expressions when playing the guitar. I love it! :D It's what makes them what they are, and that is great musicians. :)
Joe Cocker was one of the best at taking a song and making it his own. Saw him in concert in Houston Texas, he had so many hits he could not fit them into a 2 hour concert. An amazing performer R.I.P.
When Joe performed he not only sang the songs, he lived all the music as well. He expressed the music through his body as he performed. Joe became the music, when Joe was the music. (This is a Beatles song by the way.)
Another Beatle's song Joe does very well is "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window". His spastic actions is he's actually tracking every note from every instrument during the song.
You should take a trip down the Joe Cocker rabbit hole. Cry Me a River, You can keep your hat on. Unchain my Heart, You are so Beautiful, and The Letter. One of my favorite singers of all time.
This is what you call 100% commitment and focus to getting all your emotions and energy into a performance. He is using his entire body to extract every ounce of energy. Amazing
This song often makes me cry; because it makes me think about friends. It is so touching. He was a very sweet decent man, who had a pretty bad drug problem for a while. I love him.
I've always had the theory that Joe just had so much power in his voice that he just kind of became the music on stage. He just no other way to express except by moving as he sang.
This was the original Woodstock, 300, 000 people. Probably the best single performance of the whole three days. it kicks ass, the definition of an era with a Beatles Song redone. Watch the whole Woodstock movie of the concert and you'll receive a hell of an education about the end of the 1960's.
Hi my dear - this is Cocker as he lives and breathes. One of the most outstanding protagonists at the Woodstock Festival 1969. World career, extraordinary voice and extraordinary man. He is considered the inventor of the air tickler - for years many thought he was spastic, but the movements are just an expression of his emotion during his fantastic songs. RIP Joe - watch from up there and give the younger musicians a tip here and there....
When he was young, like this, it was the booze... made him loose and easy. He could shake his head like that with no headache because he felt no pain. RIP Joe Cocker. Even after his voice changed, he still had it. Saw him a year before he died... was amazing.
This is one of the most intense performances, maybe in the history of rock music... and for me, definitely Joe Cocker's best performance EVER ! I get chills and am close to tears, everytime I watch and listen to this song. He never sang this song better than at Woodstock in 1969, in front of 500000 people.
This doesn't sound like the definitive live version to me though. Perhaps you know? Perhaps the definitive version comes from Mad Dogs and English Men?
@@User2718218 Yeah, this performance at Woodstock is great, but the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour was unbelievable. The Mad Dogs version seems to have disappeared from RUclips, unfortunately.
Glad you enjoyed. But in the 60s=70s this kind of music performance was an everyday occurrence. On any given day you could walk into a venue and hear great rock n roll from the some of the best bands that ever lived.......it truly was an amazing time.............. And Woodstock is a whole other level of musical event.........................to think Joe came out and delivered this immortal performance impromptu in front of several hundred thousand on a make shift stage with make shift sound system thrown together in a matter of days.........truly amazing time Glad you appreciate it................
Joe was from Sheffield in the North of England. This is a Beatles song from the early '60's, but John Lennon, after hearing Joe deliver his version, said the song belonged to him now. The ultimate compliment. The summer of love, when hippies ruled and we all wore flowers in our hair, we were all high as kites and loved all our live music. No 'Auto-Tune' everything was live, raw, full of power and emotion. ...God rest Joe Cocker.
Wow Joy! You got his Woodstock rendition. Excellent! Not many reactors doing much from Woodstock. You should research Woodstock and find more songs from that 3 day festival in 1969, such as Richie Haven's opening act all the way to Hendrix doing his immortal closing act. ✌️😎
Now THAT was rock and roll!!!!! Joe Cocker was an unbelievable performer - the way he felt and interpreted the music has never been equaled. You don't need to do a reaction to the original version of this song by The Beatles, but you do need to listen to it, just so you can see and hear for yourself what he did with this very basic, very ordinary song. One of the most amazing vocal performances in rock history!!! All the best to you, Empress JJ!
I think this is one of the best performances EVER!! I get chills every time I hear it. This is the first time I've seen u head banging this looks very good on the Empress😃😃
If at the end of listening you aren't utterly exhausted, then you weren't listening. Re his finger, I always believed he was feeling the bass guitar with his left and the organ with his right. JC loved the organ and I am certain took his cues from it most.
you kept asking and wondering what joe was doing with his hands. well you just experienced someone's soul for the first time i think. don't worry most everyone asks the same question because it was so outragiously obvious. he just allowed the music take over. forget about hearing the soul in his voice....when you even just see it happening, it makes the song and music better for some reason....just seeing it. i've only seen it with the iconic singers and less than what i can count on my fingers. we all have it inside us i believe but it's just about being free....being ourselves....and not allowing anything to hold us back there is an expression that we should put our heart and soul in to things. well joe took it very literally and it's beautiful to watch when we understand what it actually is.
PLEASE see his Saturday Night Live performance with John Belushi - Joe remarked that he never knew that he looked like that onstage until John did his impression of Joe.
Thanks for the video I was there Yasgurs farm in 1969 with half a million friends that he (Joe) drew energy from ,Because I tell you there was a bunch of positive energy to draw from ,what a tribute to my generation we all got along Semper Fidelis The Gunny
I went to a concert with Joe Cocker abaut ten years ago, a few years before he died, and here in Denmark in Sonderborg. I had previously seen him perform on RUclips at the Woodstock Concert from 1969, and he stood swinging with his arms, going completely into the music in his expression, completely immersed in his expression of the music, just like for the Woodstock Concert, even though he was much older then. It was like traveling in a time machine when he sang "WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIEND", and I have never before or since experienced that I have had so much goosebumps on my body when this particular song was fired off on the stage..!
Instant chills as soon as he started. Joe was a master of covers. Made each song his own. This is his cover of a Beatles song. Thanks Empress for your great reaction!!!
The music possesses Mr. Cocker, and in his turn Mr. Cocker possesses the music. There are several versions of him performing this (Beatles) song. They are all the best one.
Joe's backing singers were delayed by a late flight so his group had to do vocals! I love your reactions you're so expressive with your face and eyes. I can really tell how you feel about whatever you're watching.
Joe Cocker (R.I.P.) believed in his heart that he was a Black Blues Singer.... and his passion in his every performance showed it.... you can really hear how amazing of a voice he had in his studio recordings....
I had no Idea what song this was... until it started playing, and then I knew right away, this was an old song that they used as the theme song for the show wonder years. This was my childhood.
The immortal Joe Cocker live at Woodstock 1969. There is another version of this Lenon McCartney classic with Joe and Leon Russell on tour 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen: (a line borrowed from Noel Coward) Good call Joy-Jean.
Okey! They were used to sing in the Grease Band by themselves anyway, so they could do it without the women backup. This performance turned out so well, Joe and the band was so tight and it all came about so perfect. I prefer this performance to any other take on this song, bass, drums, organ, guitar, backup vocals it all came together so nicely.
I saw him live in Chicago, Mad dogs and Englishmen tour....he was coolAF....and he lived 70 years...all that energy wasn’t natural.. He was a beast....lovely reaction.... That was his way of directing the band
I saw Joe Cocker in a famous 60's hangout spot in Hollywood once. This probably early 90's. He must has seen the recognition registering my eyes. He smiled and waved.😊
Excellent music era to grow up in. I’m so fortunate to have seen him live along with so many other great artists. ❤️ Check out Phillip Phillips, he is a cross between Joe Cocker and Bob Seger. 👍
Watching RUclips, for reaction videos like yours and other youngins (old people speech) makes me happy that the music I listened ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, ‘00s, ‘10s and now ‘20s still has this powerful connection to people. Carry on Empress!
As you say: amazing !! Watching you I thought you had the same feelings that I had when I saw that performance the first time. He s never learned an instrument and he regretted it .
Hey, that was a perfectly fitting reaction to Joe Cocker's Woodstock gig !! Enjoyed your video and for the hundredth time Joe's appearance. Many Thanks!
a true original. no-one will ever replace him. you MUST react to him singing, 'You Are So Beautiful'. if you're not in love with him now [i think you are] you certainly will be after hearing him sing that
Those boots ? Yes, they are 4inch platforms for men. They were all the rage in the late 60's, 70's and into the 80's. Mine were 4" Dark Maroon platforms with cobweb stitching across the Toe Box and Instep. I bought them just in time for the Alice Cooper "Welcome To My Nightmare Tour" in Australia - Perth 1977. I was 17.
Just watched your reaction for the second time and it really was great. You were really into it :) Now you can see more than ever why sometimes you have to watch a live version. This was different class by Joe and his Band :)
Music made Joe react with his whole body. Some people thought he had a physical illness, but the only affliction he had was his love for music, and the way it affected him. He was great in concert.
I thought that when I 1st saw him on SNL.
And he was high at the time - it was Flower Power Time 1969

Joe Walsh is exactly the same, but it is his expressions when playing the guitar. I love it! :D It's what makes them what they are, and that is great musicians. :)
Singing before a half a million people at Woodstock. One of many great performances. Was there, and still hear this song in my Mind when it is played.
Joe was always known for his spasmodic movements as well as his incredible voice. RIP Joe!
he a legend
He played the best air guitar in the business. 🙌🏻
I've seen a few other singers play air guitar as they sang, but Joe also played air bass, air drums, and air keyboards, often at the same time...
Joe Cocker was one of the best at taking a song and making it his own. Saw him in concert in Houston Texas, he had so many hits he could not fit them into a 2 hour concert. An amazing performer R.I.P.
he was just letting loose. no polished stage performance, just feeling the music, as it should be really. incredible voice.
When Joe performed he not only sang the songs, he lived all the music as well. He expressed the music through his body as he performed.
Joe became the music, when Joe was the music.

Another Beatle's song Joe does very well is "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window". His spastic actions is he's actually tracking every note from every instrument during the song.
yup, but Joe sang it better
Every man on planet earth wishes he was this cool.
You should hear him sing "You are so beautiful" and "Up where we belong". Two other beautiful songs he sings
The nearly unplugged version of “You are so beautiful” are pure class 😊👌
unplugged version
Give a listen to bye bye blackbird.

I agree Chris! Both are fantastic sons!! 👍
500,000 people- the roads were all shut down. People slept in the mud-no fights. My generation. I was 19.
You should take a trip down the Joe Cocker rabbit hole. Cry Me a River, You can keep your hat on. Unchain my Heart, You are so Beautiful, and The Letter. One of my favorite singers of all time.
"Feeling Alright," too
Empress, Joe passed in 2014. He played harmonica and piano.
This is what you call 100% commitment and focus to getting all your emotions and energy into a performance. He is using his entire body to extract every ounce of energy. Amazing
This song often makes me cry; because it makes me think about friends.

Look for "Up where we belong" by Joe Cocker
I've always had the theory that Joe just had so much power in his voice that he just kind of became the music on stage.
He just no other way to express except by moving as he sang.
They call it playing 'Air Guitar". This performance is from the most famous Pop Festival "Woodstock" three days of music and peace in August 1969!
This was the original Woodstock, 300, 000 people. Probably the best single performance of the whole three days. it kicks ass, the definition of an era with a Beatles Song redone. Watch the whole Woodstock movie of the concert and you'll receive a hell of an education about the end of the 1960's.
My dad was there for the last day. I'm not sure if he saw this or not.
Air guitar inventor! RIP Joe Cocker
R.I.P. Joe..Thanks For All You Gave Us..Gone But Definitely Not Forgotten.
RIP BROTHER GREAT SONG
Joe was just feeling the music. You’ll find some of the greatest music in the 60’s and 70’s.
🇨🇦👍
Joe was a hell of a dancer LOL 😆

Keep the good work ✌

Joe was the real deal. He exuded passion whenever he performed.
careful Elvis fans don't see that post

I loved this song by the Beatles but Joe Cocker took it to another level, he added some soul.

The band is singing backup because the real backup girls couldn’t get to Woodstock- due to miles of wall to wall traffic and walking crowds.
