People are blown away by this song because of how much it changes but that's kind of in the title. In musical terms a rhapsody is one piece of music that has different parts or episodes that are free from one structure but somehow they all fit together even though the mood of the song can change drastically from one minute to the next. This song is a masterpiece of rock music :)

The problem with Queen is they have so many amazing songs, it's impossible to suggest just one or two. But here goes, White Queen live at Hammersmith Odeon 1975, Somebody To Love live at Montreal 1981, Another One Bites The Dust live at Wembley 1986, Save Me live at Montreal 1981, You Take My Breath Away live at Hyde Park 1976. A few studio versions, Death On Two Legs (lyric video), Seaside Rendezvous, The Show Must Go On, The Millionaire Waltz (headphones a MUST). Of course, their infamous 20 minute performance at the Live Aid charity concert in 1985. They were only one of many top acts that day, but they stole the show. It has been voted the best live rock performance more than once.
I could go on and list so many more, ,Iike Bring Back That Leroy Brown, or My Melancholy Blues and soooo many more. Welcome to the wonderful world of Queen my friend.

It's Freddie's story about being gay and being brought up in a conservative and religious family. The man he killed is himself, when he came to terms with who he was. He was torn by the thoughts that who he was would make his mother hate him and that he couldn't be part of his family and may go to hell. He also (I think) knew that who he was, was unavoidable and that he had to be who he should be so he was being blown by the wind and was content to let his fate be what it would be.
The music is superb and the story captivating.

Dying and killing was very big in 70's pop and rock music.
The dad kills the daughter while trying to shoot the boyfriend.
Leroy Brown is a bloody puddle, Big Jim Walker might as well have died on the same floor,
One guy had joy, had fun, had seasons in the son and dies of "something."
Chicago dies and a hundred caps are dead.
Billy was a hero. Didn't work out for him.
He shot the sheriff but didn't shoot the deputy.
Lola loses Tony due to a fight with Rico at the Copacabana.

@Snufkin Crimelord There is no right or wrong answer, and Freddie did write a story for this song to follow, it is like an opera. Personally, I will say the song about the industry. You can sign you should away with a bad contract, and as performer you always have to perform and put on a show even when you not in the mood for it. You have to suppress part of your personality to be a good entertainer to other people.

its a rhapsody a mini opera telling a story in three or four change ups and down parts, iv'e listened many great bands and artists over the last 60 years and some amazing songs but this is the one and only song by any band or artist that i have never ceased to listen to on a regular basis since 1975, you just cant forget it and now on you tube it is an emotional trip watching younger generations first listen, its the same reaction as we had all those years ago in the mid seventies gobsmacked when it came on over the sound systems in the pubs and discos you thought what the (- - - - ) we all looked at one another and just sang along to it, it was impossible to dance to

      @oskarobit 4 года назад +3

@ShariSez1 it's more than obvious in the context of the song he's killing the man people think he is, to be a new one. In that times intolerance and violence against LGTBI people was riding high, so it could happen he won't return home next day... alive. Later on, for example, he sings about being 'stoned' and being 'spit in the eye' just for his sexual choices.
So yeah, this is about a fake bohemian life that is, for real, a rhapsody (many different parts -of his life- unrelated one to another).

      @@oskarobit Oh, drat, I knew I shouldn't
have posted that, but I did, so here goes. It is not my original idea, but one posted on another reaction. I liked the explanation, but don't remember all the details. I'll do the best I can. First, there is the crime, then the deal with the devil, as in "Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me."
Then he seeks redemption, "...let me go." "No, no, we will not let you go," but it is too late. "Nothing really matters."
Yeah, I know, it leaves out all the misadventures in between. But Freddie said he had ideas for three unfinished songs and decided to just cobble them all together and make a rhapsody out of it all.
I'm sorry I can't explain it as well as the guy who made the initial comment. I wish he would come here and bail me out. 😎

May, Mercury, and Taylor reportedly sang their vocal parts continually for 10 to 12 hours a day. The entire piece took three weeks to record, and in some sections featured 180 separate overdubs. Since the studios of the time only offered 24 track analogue tape, it was necessary for the three to overdub themselves many times and "bounce" these down to successive sub-mixes. In the end, eighth-generation tapes were used. The various sections of tape containing the desired sub-mixes had to be spliced (cut and assembled in the correct sequence). May recalled placing a tape in front of the light and being able to see through it, as the tape had been used so many times.

We couldn’t believe our ears when “Bohemian Rhapsody” came on the radio stations back in the fall of ‘75. But almost everything stopped in my social circle when they played it. Some radio stations didn’t want to play it because it was so different. But we demanded that they play it. And play it they did. And they’ll still be playing this long after you, and I, and everyone else reading this are long gone. You can’t keep a masterpiece hidden. A song for the ages....

@@JonathanGarcia-pq5hg "Pretty Woman" barely scratches the surface of Roy's range and ability, You are right, he was no Freddie Mercury and there is no other voice like Freddie's; but Freddie's marvelous showmanship propelled a lot of his impressive vocal dynamics. Roy Orbison's style is completely the opposite - he was essentially an opera singer without the flair... - nurturing a song until it was ready for a seductively angelic high note or crescendo. If you talk to a fan of music, that person would probably favor Freddie, but if you talk to a musician (which I am not, by the way), he or she would most likely favor Roy. Listen to "Leah", "Crying", "It's Over", and "In Dreams". You might still favor Freddie, but you'll gain a greater appreciation for Roy Orbison vocally. Cheers!
