I think it would’ve definitely been an estate in the past. I believe that it’s dimensions are very close to the estate version of the Fabia mk1 which is probably the segment this car is replacing
1. That was a road covered in dirt so traction wouldn’t have been perfect conditions. 2. There are two USB-C inputs in front of the gear stick which could definitely power a dash cam with. 3. Clearly if you don’t need your key leave it in your bag....... 4. The gesture control on the NAV works perfectly when you’re not using such fast jerky movements. 6. The one in the new Volkswagen Golf is the same system. 7. The dash setup that looks like it’s “broken” is a simple dark screen for when travelling on freeways. 8. Agreed the bag hooks on the rear of the seats should probably be removable. 9. You may have noticed the Aircon said normal, not sport. That’s because the setting for the aircon changes when putting the car in economy, nothing to do with sport mode. Whilst I enjoy the comedy in your reviews it becomes a bit annoying when it’s at the expense of features in a car that you just don’t understand...
Noah in america they like luxury cars v6 v8 engines not 1.6 ltr. Also if you want an economic car you go Japanese nissan toyota honda. Or their luxury brand eg lexus
I am with you on that it looks like an estate... the same with an Audi a3. They both have the profile of an estate but are shorter. Another thing that makes the scala fit in with estates is that the boot is about the same volume as the estate versions of Focus and Astra from the mid 10s...
Considering the space and all the stuff inside, it can easily compete with the Golf. That's why every reviewer out there compares it to the Golf, not the Polo!
It may be based on the same platform as a polo but it is aimed to be a car in the same class as for example golf, a3, focus or astra. Skoda already has a car in that class... the octavia... but that car, even as a hatchback, is more a rival to only the estate versions of those cars... and also a rival to cars one class above because of its space. The scala and previously the rapid aims towards the normal hatchbacks in the golf class... and I mean... the scala is about the same size as the estate versions of some of those cars but still looks like a normal (short style) hatchback... definitely not comparable to a polo or fiesta.
Spacing out the letters on the boot panel. That's another thing loads of car manufacturers are doing other than incrementally making their grilles bigger. Soon, the letters will be so spaced out, they'll be running across the doors and onto the front wheel arches
I own the predecessor (Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1.4 TSI) in Singapore. It isn't the most popular car where I live but for the price, it really does kick ass against its Japanese/Korean rivals (Mazda/Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/Kia) when it comes to performance. Against its "continental" car rivals (VW/Audi/Volvo), the main draw is the price point. I think Skoda provides some of the best value if you look past its brand... it is what it is esp since it uses VW engines. I call Skoda the VW = Value Wagon!
Škoda being "reasonably priced" used to be true, now less so. I recently asked some dealerships for offers on stock Scalas. All I wanted was automatic air-co, alloy wheels, metallic paint and the 110hp petrol engine, the rest didn't matter. Got back 27-29k €. Great, I said, so how much is the discount (usually Skoda gives huge discounts)? "Oh, they are already included in the offer". The Skoda Scalas listed were 32-33 thousand euro listprice?!?! How is a Scala a 30+k car?!
I've had Scala 1.5 tsi as a company car for a 8 months now. I've done 30 000 km in it and I have mixed feelings about it. Engine is great. 150 hp is more then enough, my consumption is 6.2 L over lifetime, and it is confy and quiet on the motorway. It is like tardis, so much space, infotament system is good and speakers are great. I can connect 2 phones on bt. I don't like seats and driving position. It took me weeks to find good driving position, clutch is strange, it's hard to make smooth getaway, line keep assist is annoying, front assist made me shit my pants few times by emergency braking randomly on a road. I have some weird combination od LED and HID lights and it is making my head explode when night driving and fuel tank is too small, I think it should be at least 65l and car is anything but sporty. As soon as you start to push it gets wobbly and understeery (my personal car is Giulia Qv so that can influence my driving experience)
I used to be a Skoda driver until 3 months ago. Always checked oil, coolant, wiper fluid and tire pressure before long journey. Now I am BMW driver and ... there are no long journeys, damn you Covid.
Hatchback. Because wagon has roofline that ends perpendicularly to sedan rear floorline. Think about it; Mitsubishi Lancer CT9W is based on CT9A which is a sedan. They just extend the roofline that ends almost the same rear floorline as sedan counterpart.
My Scala has a usb next to the rear view mirror, but no 12 volt in the boot. Lane assist is bloody dangerous, it doesn't like bends in the road and overtaking is a problem, switch it off!!
Nobody ever mentions that you need a phone to play your own music, you cannot use a usb flash drive even with an adaptor to simply play music. I was ready to buy one but walked away due to this and bought the Seat Arona which has usb sockets. Glad I did cos I love it.
Just wanted to say that Matt probably is the best car reviewer on the web. On point informative, objective and funny. With this car - I am sold! Already tried it for a test drive :)
I've got one of those!! Agree with the lane assist it's so annoying having to turn off all the time, I love I have the "Audi" scrolling indicators, I love my tech so its a good car to have for that, you can get a false floor as an option that stops the gap between the seats and floor
Heavy bonnet? Doesn’t seem much heavier than my previous fiesta tbh. Parcel shelf fits neatly behind the rear seats. Review is of a model near the top of the range (Monte Carlo?). USB in the back is an option, as are the side pockets in the seats, parcel shelf net, and drawers under the seats.
The comment about “nowhere to put your key” was a very strange one. Where does anyone put a key with keyless ignition? Doesn’t matter where the button is located
6:24, what's wrong with checking the "oily bits" under the bonnet?......I service and maintain my own car, oh yes, I am also a Skoda owner, 2015 Fabia estate and I love it 😂😂😂
Hate to be that guy but in the interest of anyone considering a Scala - (from Auto Express) 'In this case it’s the MQB A0 platform. This is an evolution of the architecture that underpins the VW Golf (and the Skoda Octavia), but the A0 denotation means it’s the version generally used for superminis. So the Scala is based on the same platform as the Polo rather than the Golf that it rivals, but this doesn’t affect its ability.' Still a great car though!
A variable floor giving a flat load bay and a parcel shelf store hold would almost make this small car a tick all boxes in 1.5 guise at this price point.
I think I agree with both of you (I know that’s a contradiction). The D-pillar argument makes sense, but I’ve alway considered the A3 a hatchback. The old Mazda Protege 5 still confounds me.

1:08 it could be a new A3 sportback in disguise
I have the "ancestor" of this car, which is the Rapid spaceback, quite the same car, basically.
Absolutely love it 😎
I think it would’ve definitely been an estate in the past. I believe that it’s dimensions are very close to the estate version of the Fabia mk1 which is probably the segment this car is replacing
Try to stop to have some interest of the brand when my 1.4 VRS was drinking 2.0 liters of oil every 1000 miles! Great work Matt!
You chose the worst engine in this brand history....
When you reviewing the Superb facelift Matt?
Having had triplets, and having sold my Skoda Octavia VR-s wagon because we couldn't get 3 x child seats across the back seat - about time Skoda!!!
Finally some more cars from ma country😊
Whilst I enjoy the comedy in your reviews it becomes a bit annoying when it’s at the expense of features in a car that you just don’t understand...
for point 8, they are removable :)
So many car manufacturers out there that we never see here in America.
Why you can't? I don't know
@@ayigittekdemir because my country sucks, and we don't like things that are... different.
You really dont want to see skoda 😂
Noah in america they like luxury cars v6 v8 engines not 1.6 ltr. Also if you want an economic car you go Japanese nissan toyota honda. Or their luxury brand eg lexus
haidar hamdard Toyota dont make economical cars. Most VW Group cars and BMW’s are far more economical than the Asian cars. Fact.
I am with you on that it looks like an estate... the same with an Audi a3. They both have the profile of an estate but are shorter.
Another thing that makes the scala fit in with estates is that the boot is about the same volume as the estate versions of Focus and Astra from the mid 10s...
Scala is based on A0 platform, therefore it is more like a Polo than Golf.
It’s a hatch,very impressive Skoda 👍
I own the predecessor (Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1.4 TSI) in Singapore. It isn't the most popular car where I live but for the price, it really does kick ass against its Japanese/Korean rivals (Mazda/Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/Kia) when it comes to performance. Against its "continental" car rivals (VW/Audi/Volvo), the main draw is the price point. I think Skoda provides some of the best value if you look past its brand... it is what it is esp since it uses VW engines. I call Skoda the VW = Value Wagon!
Its an amazing car. Not many of my friends like it, but I love it so much. Hope it comes to Australia !!
Your wish came true, been driving one around, it really is great
@@StephenDeTomasi I’ve snapped a couple of these, but the Toyota Corolla is just a bit better
I was looking forward to your review of this car, thank you!
Matt u are wrong about the parcel shelf. U can store it vertical near the backseat, check the manual.
7:33 Just me or did anyone else wanted our Mat to shout "Hooligan!" in a Jezza-esque way.
I feel your point about the clutch.. I had it for some days as a rental car. the only way I found was shifting up really quick once the car moves
Skoda is killing it at the moment the most spacious cars.
Looks like shit though 😬
@@xICE_PANDAx It looks cool to me.
@@xICE_PANDAx It's almost as though opinions exist.
@@xICE_PANDAx Taste is subjective. I'd bet you're too young to buy a car or develop interpersonal communication skills anyways though.
@@scubasteve3778 22, serve in the army and own a car. Might want to rethink boy
Modern version of the old Fabia. Like it!
A town with no body in it.. sounds like the new normal to me.
I used to be a Skoda driver until 3 months ago. Always checked oil, coolant, wiper fluid and tire pressure before long journey. Now I am BMW driver and ... there are no long journeys, damn you Covid.
Good looking Skoda, perfect. I Like it
For Me This is Audi RSQ8 Competitor. I like Design and that engine
Happy Ramadan and Eid Mubarak
Hatchback. Because wagon has roofline that ends perpendicularly to sedan rear floorline.
Think about it; Mitsubishi Lancer CT9W is based on CT9A which is a sedan. They just extend the roofline that ends almost the same rear floorline as sedan counterpart.
Big fan of carwow, good on ya Mat👍
My Scala has a usb next to the rear view mirror, but no 12 volt in the boot. Lane assist is bloody dangerous, it doesn't like bends in the road and overtaking is a problem, switch it off!!
And another video got me notified again! I love carwow❤️
Everyone loves carwow
Nobody ever mentions that you need a phone to play your own music, you cannot use a usb flash drive even with an adaptor to simply play music. I was ready to buy one but walked away due to this and bought the Seat Arona which has usb sockets. Glad I did cos I love it.
Why is using your phone to play music a problem?
This car and this review is probably my favorite I've seen in car wow. Wow what a car at the price. Not available in Malaysia though
Matt is really in his element on these boring cars. Sometimes in the bigger stuff he seems a bit bored but he’s on form for this video.
Just wanted to say that Matt probably is the best car reviewer on the web. On point informative, objective and funny. With this car - I am sold! Already tried it for a test drive :)
I like his essential Englishness in that he doesn't take himself too seriously.
This is actually the only small family car I'm genuinely interested in buying, very nice.
That interior design and exterior design is very nice and gorgeous.
The comment about “nowhere to put your key” was a very strange one. Where does anyone put a key with keyless ignition? Doesn’t matter where the button is located
Hardcore carwow fans now know where the button for the start key scene came from in Mat’s bad trends video
Hardcore lamer virgin lmao you jus got 360 noSc0ped som
Matt, nice video again. But, 7:00 it does not belong there. I think it is clear, if it does not fit there.
Actually i love the interior design
6:24, what's wrong with checking the "oily bits" under the bonnet?......I service and maintain my own car, oh yes, I am also a Skoda owner, 2015 Fabia estate and I love it 😂😂😂
15:16 "Considering how much is doesn't cost"
You can get an adjustable boot floor as an option. Just like an estate car! Good review 👍🏼
The technical term is called a “spaceback”
Hate to be that guy but in the interest of anyone considering a Scala - (from Auto Express) 'In this case it’s the MQB A0 platform. This is an evolution of the architecture that underpins the VW Golf (and the Skoda Octavia), but the A0 denotation means it’s the version generally used for superminis. So the Scala is based on the same platform as the Polo rather than the Golf that it rivals, but this doesn’t affect its ability.' Still a great car though!
Matt watson vs Doug de muro, most underrated rivalry in youtube.
Dough is #1
I prefer mr Watson
Watson
Don’t think so
matt
A variable floor giving a flat load bay and a parcel shelf store hold would almost make this small car a tick all boxes in 1.5 guise at this price point.
It has 'D' pillars, therefore it should technically be classed as an estate car.
I think I agree with both of you (I know that’s a contradiction). The D-pillar argument makes sense, but I’ve alway considered the A3 a hatchback. The old Mazda Protege 5 still confounds me.
Maybe its a 4-door shooting brake
old vw polo has got 4 pillars, does that make it estate as well?
Loving my Scala, Loving your funny reviews. Wish carwow existed in Turkey. Greetings.
