Dude, this test was really stupid, because you can't compare the civic with the other cars. The Civic is way longer than for example a VW Golf. That this is still called as a compact class car is so stupid. Don't get me wrong, the Civic is a great car, but it's in another class than the others.
The golf didn’t come first, ill etch this date into my memory, cause this is a first, and honestly I’ve never seen the fascination with golfs, always seen them as bland and boring, the focus has outclassed it for many years in drivability and appearance, but always came 2nd for some strange reason.
My issue with this comparison is size - the civic is about 20cm longer than the other three; put half of that extra in the passenger compartment and the other half in the boot, and you obviously get more space in both. Otherwise great review!
the civic is 27cm longer than the golf 8 (and a bit wider) and only 8cm shorter than the golf 8 variant. obviously the golf 8 variant offers A LOT more boot capacity and most likely rear passenger space. from a size aspect, the honda civic is completely out of place here, i agree. its much closer to a golf 8 variant than a normal golf 8.
Soo, u get more of the car for less money. Is that bad? (only if you go for affordable, than golf have better position, but weaker engine and lower equipment)
Yeah and there sedan cars are iconic in Asian countries like Pakistan, Vietnam etc. the Honda Civic is considered a considerable plusher car in the competition. And imo it's definitely more luxurious and plusher than the corolla, imo corolla has no 0 competition to the All-New Civic E:HEV
I purchased the Focus. I've had it for 4 months now and it is a lovely car. Looks are subjective of course but I think its rather handsome. It is a joy to drive. The combination of the 1 litre engine, the mild hybrid set up, and the 7 speed auto all gels together to give a seamless driving experience. Fuel consumption is excellent, which is in the mid 50s. The sync 4 infotainment is just brilliant and having a lot of the controls built into it makes for a very attractive and simplistic looking cabin. A great all round car.
The focus he has on test here has the older style automatic, you can tell as is has a traditional lever rather than a dial.. kinda unfair on the focus.. most mk4s have the 7 speed auto.
@@foxxyblieu9 Isn't it the other way round? The gearbox dial being the slightly older 8 speed. I may be wrong however. I thought the 7 speed was actually the newer of the two gearboxes currently fitted to the Mk 4.5
@@jcarter3562 the dial is fitted to both 7 & 8 speed cars.. if it has the traditional “prndl” shifter it’s fitted with the dsp6 box which dates back to 2011 mk3 focuses and are known to be quite bad
@@foxxyblieu9 Thanks, that's interesting. The 6 speed auto I had in my previous 9 year old Fiesta was faultless. The "7" speed gear ratios in my focus definitely change quicker and are closer together. Currently the average fuel consumption is showing 54.5 which is really good and that is with the mild hybrid system.
I don’t think the fact that you can get the Focus and the Golf (and maybe also Astra) as an estate should be excluded from these hatch videos. I believe it is the best “budget” type of car as they are light and both have over 600l of boot space (more then the A6) I would love to get the Civic, if only it was an estate (I love the looks of this fastback though). Therefore I am getting Golf estate with 1.5l 150hp manual.
I’m so glad I put in my order for a new civic advance hopefully comming soon early in the new year. I was hesitant as hardly any reviews were out when ordered, I was only going by the fact I’ve had 3 civics already. The fact this new civic is acing every review gives me the seal of approval I’ve made the right choice. 😊
The Civic is a bigger car. In the USA the Golf is still considered a "Compact" where the Civic is classified as a "Large" car. So the Civic feels bigger because well it's a bigger car.
Important note for the Astra that it now comes with Pure Panel Pro instead of the cheaper Pure Panel which you see in this video. Then you don’t get all the black plastic, but glass.
The Mk10 Civic Hatchback (very sporty looking in person) with the 1.0 or 1.5 sport Earthdream's VTEC Turbocharged technology is a great purchase as well! Wide, low with good centre of gravity and also has a smarter sporty handling torque vectoring system with fully independant rear suspension, it's still an awesome modern purchase to tell you the truth (and the used prices are impeccable imo) 🔥💪 I have one in Rallye Red and my sensible 1.0 almost looks like a Type R version (1.0 is so good that it feels like a 1.8! modern technology is next level)
The thing I've never understood are manufacturers having screens stick up from the dash robbing visibility in some cars. I've got a MK3.5 Focus and the screen being built into the dash makes much more sense to me and doesnt look out of place with visibility being great. Just to add on the Focus aswell that the bottom part of the rear seats fold up so the back parts go flat.
i can vow for Honda steering and handling, I drove, bmw 3 series, Mers A series, G70 genesis and a bunch of nissan, chevrolet and the Honda steering feel is up there with the best of the best
I'd pick the civic. Astra to me just looks a bit cheap inside. Like the previous generation it seems it's good but not class leading which means in a few years it'll be an also ran. I currently drive a golf mark 7 estate and to be honest I much prefer the interior layout to the 8. Although that looks more stylish. But given the choice between these and my car if prices were the same, I think I'd pick the civic. The 1.5tsi DSG combo in the golf is good and offers punchy performance. Very strong long distance economy (usually over 50, on occasion 60). But it's a bit thirsty in congested traffic with mpg down in the 30s for this. I could imagine the hybrid in the civic will seriously improve this whilst also having more power. I like the civics interior as well. Now just make an estate and it could be my next car! I'd not discount the focus either. Not least on a cold day with their standard heated front screens. But I'd need it for substantially less money than the civic.
I have the Civic sport touring and absolutely love it! This video hits on all the highlights of the car - super practical, economical, and great looking (in red especially). A head turner 👀
@@TeoSluga In america its the sport touring hatchback model, looks the same as the UK version but it has a 1.5 VTEC Turbocharged engine creating 180hp like the older sport plus Civic Mk10 we got in the UK (that's a super good car too, pretty modern and handles superbly sporty the Mk10 Civic, and Mk11 just builds on that 🔥)
Probably focus still best driving car and the exterior could look better in a different colour. But the honda's engine and interior look promising even if it is sacrificing the height for the passengers space traveling in the back. Still a lot of praise on the exterior look which is not far away than a Laguna.
I like it, I had the chance to drive one last week & oh boy is it better the Focus/Golf/ 308 & Civic. It hugs the road & the feeling of a quality product is certainly present. Oh boy have Opel/Vauxhall upped the game with the new Astra, plus the kit you get with it in the mid & low level offers as standard puts the competition to shame. The steering wheel is well designed & balanced to give excellent road feel & the flat bottom helps a lot in tight turns when on other cars you have to replace where your hands are positioned the Astra u can still turn the wheel & It keeps the workload down to a minimum, the front & rear plus the 360 cameras are Uber clear, the 2 huge touchscreen displays are also excellent. The climate & vents r great plus the difference in mood lighting is also a nice touch. The HUD & road sign recognition works well & the cruise control do a great job plus u just lock on to the car in front including the lane assist keeps u centred without the usual bouncing from left to right that happens in other vehicles. All I can say is great job 👏
The designer that was at Peugeot and now at Renault is the hottest shit in car design ...I've never seen so many gorgeous looking normal cars ever. Any other companies like Vauxhall copying with the RoboCop looking futuristic look is just amazing. The days of blobby, nothing every cars is over for now... The Pug 208 GTI is a thing of beauty. New Kia's are insane as well
...what is less briliant is the price... I would never pay 35k-37k EUR for this car. Never. You can have much bigger and better car for that money. For example, the price is comparable to the new 180 HP Citroen CX5 and Peugeot 408... A completely different league.
I’m really surprised about the price of those cars. The Honda has the more expensive entry level price but on the specs you shown the difference is much smaller … and it’s the bigger , the better and the most powerful of the four cars… and the one with the best technology !! Hope these kind of pricing applies to Portugal because it is a very friendly car for companies (and yes , it is not an SUV !!!). Great review !
Matt is stating what we all already knew. Whether it is base models or top trims the Civic is superior to the competition. At Type R level rest assured there's no Focus RS, no Golf R, no GR Corolla, no Elantra N that comes close to the level of engineering. The Civic is the undisputed king hands down.
The Fiesta was always B-segment or "subcompact" compared to the "compact" or C-segment of the Escort or Focus. Below the Fiesta, lived the A-segment "supermini" Ford Ka, the third generation of which was only recently discontinued in India AFAIK. 🙂
Great video and do think you should do more of these! Comparisons for each car type, suv, super car etc keep it up guys. Waiting for that civic to go down slightly!!! Like you, looks like most car journalists are really impressed with this civic and thats without testing the type r version!
The Vauxhall is an Opel So Germany has 2 Entries kinda. That said, Opel/Vauxhall are really winning the Design Game for affordable Cars recently. Both the Astra and the Mokka look even better in Person Prost & Cheers from Germany
Ehh Vauxhalls & Opels have a lot of designing & engineering done in the UK along with manufacturing so you can say both Vauxhall & Opel are British & German both of which are under French ownership which has a massive partnership with the Italians & Americans
@@Spilkes1 okay then. So Skoda = seat = Volkswagen? Nissan = Renault = Mitsubishi? Just because you happen to know Opel and Peugeot are in the same multinational automotive manufacturing company Stellantis doesn’t mean they’re the exact same car and you can’t compare them.
I have the tenth gen and drove the new one at the dealership and it his incredible the difference I paid 23 grand 2 years ago this is 7 grand more but well worth it over l hr mixed driving I averaged 58 miles to gallon slightly better than the 1.6 litre diesel I had in th 9th gen I had Matt has done a great honest review of this car as usual where some journalists you just know they would say the golf like they have done for the last 20 years well done car wow
I have a 10th gen civic 1.5T sport plus with MT. Also test drove the new hybrid last week for about an hour. It's a very good hybrid car. However I tried mine and the test car in the same corners and I have to say that the Sport+ 10.gen wins on curvy roads. In the new one the suspension is much softer and there is much less feedback from that steering and less feedback on the brakes, the extra 100-150 kg weight is also a possible cause of this. And oil change every 10k kms. That's a bit strange too. Acceleration is somewhat better in the hybrid, but only in numbers, in the MT 10th gen 1.5T you feel the acceleration much more. Overall I liked it (better interior, better quality, better infotainment system), but I personally like the 10th gen more when it's about curvy roads. It's also a bit odd that above 100-110km/h on highway the 10th gen 1.5T consumes LESS (yes, less) gasoline than the new hybrid. In city and stop and go traffic the new one clearly wins.
@@itsallrobbish I bought the Advance in October, and it's superb. Price is slightly higher now, but I'm sure it's justifiable given the size, build, tech of the car. The only criticism is the slightly over zealous steering wheel sensors which monitor your inputs and flash up regular warnings even when it's not driving itself.
I'm pretty sure the Focus has a false floor option which solves everything you nagged about when reviewing the trunk. The old one absolutely did, there's no reason for this one to not have it as well. That would make it more practical than the Golf and potentially in second place overall, since it looks like you're putting a decent emphasis on practicality (rightfully so).
small but comes with a big price, especially the european brands compared to the asia market. i remember the opel corse 2-3 years ago atleast where i live started from 15900eu and now it reached 19900eu while around the same price i can buy a hyundai i30 fastback.
Opel corsa 1.0lt 19900 euros Hyundai i30 fastback 1.0lt 19690 euros both are base models with the hyundai offering more features than the opel. Those are the official prices in greece. The fact that hyundai that makes their cars outside of europe can sell them cheaper than germany shows how much impact the energy crisis has done. The fastback you checked is probably the 265 PS model that is also their sportline which makes sense of why it costs that much.
basic versions were cut due to covid so only versions with better features were sold which naturally raises the minimum price but you also get more features for that new minimum price.
A video comparing the Aygo, Picanto, Up, i10 and Ignis would be great. Cars which are actually small and people can afford. It’s a shrinking class which needs some media attention.
These cars are almost out of production. It's the end of the A-segment car. Many of my cars were small and light, but somehow new regulations have made these too expensive.
I definitely think this Civic is worth comparing with more serious competitors. It's just miles away in every aspect, although it shares the same car segment as the Golf or Focus.
I definetely would take the Civic! Great styling in- and outside, fantastic engine, lowest fuel consumption... with no doubt my personal no.1! No.2 is the Focus. 2nd best styling in- and outside in my opinion, lots of space on the rear seats and when you order the 2nd "trunk floor", you also have a flat cargo space after putting down the rear seats. And not to forget, driving the Focus is so much fun :D If I would have to decide between Golf and Astra, I guess I'd take the Golf because it looks at least a little better, especially in the cockpit. But I have to admit that I don't like both interior stylings! Maybe I'd like the Golf more if the 2-screen-panel would be straight instead of offset. But the Astra looks too much technical and there's too much glossy black... I don't like that. It's doesn't make me feel good and cozy.
Here in Austria the Civic comes with 8 years warranty provided you do the yearly maintenance at a Honda dealer. Otherwise it's "only" five years. I've owned the civic for four days now and the car gives me the feeling to drive one level above its class. I had a Diesel Passat before which was nice but in no way better than the Civic.
Press the button on the end of the indicator stalk in the astra and it changes the driver display 😏 I've also set mine to be purple which is so much nicer than the red
You are right. The Honda is the best. You judged them correctly. It's a shame with Opel because they did such a good job with the outside of the Astra. Had they put the same amount of effort into the interior design, they would have stood higher up in the hierarchy. I really like the Ford steering wheel. It just inspires confidence. Great job with the show, as always!
Had my new (6th) Civic Advance a couple of months nearly now. It’s an absolute dream to drive. I noticed you never mentioned that they actually play the engine sound through the Bose speakers though!
I'd go for the Mazda 3 in that class. It looks the best, it drives the best by a good margin (only one I haven't driven is the Astra as we don't get it in Canada), the interior is leagues better than the others. The back seat is a bit tight for anyone over 6ft but it's perfect for normal sized people and kids. The boot is a great shape so it swallows everything. Definitely the best choice.
I have the impression the Honda is better overall since it is the car they actually want you to buy. The other brands have more expensive, high-end vehicles they need to market, so an Astra, Focus or Golf can't really get all the good stuff - something has to be kept for the bigger brothers. Honda seems to not do that - I'm not familiar with the rest of their line-up, but they seem to go all-in (considering the budget of the car), which I quite like
Civic is great, but Astra should take the second place. It has the softest suspension, so it offers the best comfort. The storage space is the largest, so it's the most practical one. The interior is almost as good as on the civic and better than the rest, except the room in the back (but it is still sufficient). And as of exterior, I think it looks better than all of the competition.
Well, as a Golf guy, the Mk8 is a no-go for me. Looks dreadful and I couldn't be assed with that interior/digital set-up. Also...they no longer sell a normal Golf in the U.S. I've been looking to buy a Honda Civic hatchback here instead, but they don't exist either - and no one is selling them at the normal MSRP...so that's a no-go. No Focus in the U.S. either because Ford decided no one drives cars...so that's a no-go. And no Astra here either. So I would buy the Honda Civic - but apparently I'm not allowed to.

My dad is a honda fan and I grew up with hondas around, and especially the civic. Seeing this one being so good is so satisfying
I've got the same, it's great!
I believe it is the best “budget” type of car as they are light and both have over 600l of boot space (more then the A6)
I would love to get the Civic, if only it was an estate (I love the looks of this fastback though). Therefore I am getting Golf estate with 1.5l 150hp manual.
Well this! Try getting a Civic as a wagon.
Got the advance trim in white
You've made the right choice.
Well nice car
The Civic is a bigger car. In the USA the Golf is still considered a "Compact" where the Civic is classified as a "Large" car. So the Civic feels bigger because well it's a bigger car.
Hondas recent ones are on another level ❤
Important note for the Astra that it now comes with Pure Panel Pro instead of the cheaper Pure Panel which you see in this video. Then you don’t get all the black plastic, but glass.
But even with the glass it looks like a copypaste of a 2003 tv
Matt did his best to downplay the new Astra. I think it's the best of those four.
would say the focus is actually the best looking of all the cars there
Well done Honda and I was considering it as a family car. Just a little bit out of our price range but should improve in cost over time.
Only a fool or someone with money to burn buys new
Pick a 2 year old car up with 8k miles in 2 years time and save your self thousands
The Mk10 Civic Hatchback (very sporty looking in person) with the 1.0 or 1.5 sport Earthdream's VTEC Turbocharged technology is a great purchase as well! Wide, low with good centre of gravity and also has a smarter sporty handling torque vectoring system with fully independant rear suspension, it's still an awesome modern purchase to tell you the truth (and the used prices are impeccable imo) 🔥💪
I have one in Rallye Red and my sensible 1.0 almost looks like a Type R version (1.0 is so good that it feels like a 1.8! modern technology is next level)

I think the focus has the best exterior. Focus looks dope
TheCReedy, the Civic Type R 1999 for me still better than 2023 version.
Love the way the screen is properly incorporated into the dash on my Focus 3.5
i can vow for Honda steering and handling, I drove, bmw 3 series, Mers A series, G70 genesis and a bunch of nissan, chevrolet and the Honda steering feel is up there with the best of the best
Sport touring? That's the caravan, 2 generations back? It's not comparable to the new civic..
You mean everybody is turning his head to better look elsewhere?
Brilliant honest review on the Honda. Thx Mat!
I like how Matt hardly looks at the camera while drivng and reviewing. True pro !
the only thing is with the astra is that I can totally see them absolutely everywhere on council estates in 5 years
You can say the same about the Golf. These cars have always been the chariot of choice of young working class men.
It's remarkable how nowadays I can only think of the Civic from this video, as a car of choice.
I quite like the look of the new Astra. It has a 70s 80s feel
i love that civic. if i absolutely had to get a hybrid, i would buy that in yellow.
It does not exist in yellow.
Now I love civic much more than before 😍
Thanks ♥️
I actually like the Focus' exterior design
Ok grandpa.
The Pug 208 GTI is a thing of beauty. ...what is less briliant is the price...

Its amazing these are classed as 'small family' cars these days! When it used to be things like the Fiesta.
Yeah I bought one thinking it was small, now I'm getting a truck license to be able to drive it 😂
The Fiesta was always B-segment or "subcompact" compared to the "compact" or C-segment of the Escort or Focus. Below the Fiesta, lived the A-segment "supermini" Ford Ka, the third generation of which was only recently discontinued in India AFAIK. 🙂
The Vauxhall looks amazing

Call me a slow driver, but I’ve had a 75 plus mpg in my mark 9, love it. This new Civic seems amazing……Honda for life.
As per Matt talks Rhubarb, the Civic is more expensive proper hybrid, so not really comparable to the normal cheaper cars.
Focus by far the best looking. @Matt, when you tested the Focus a month ago, you said it was good looking, you change your opinion that fast?
small but comes with a big price, especially the european brands compared to the asia market.
i remember the opel corse 2-3 years ago atleast where i live started from 15900eu and now it reached 19900eu while around the same price i can buy a hyundai i30 fastback.
hyundai fastback only cost 55k.
Opel corsa 1.0lt 19900 euros
Hyundai i30 fastback 1.0lt 19690 euros
both are base models with the hyundai offering more features than the opel.
The Ford Focus is my personal favourite with its great handling but the Civic looks like a well built quality small family car.
I love these kind of reviews,,,,,It already gives you an option to choose from,,,, great vid matt

Golf for me. Handsome and classy still. Not as good as mark 7, but still great.
Civic is by far the best car to keep long term.
Honda has knocked it out of the park. This will be my next car no doubt!
1. Astra 2. Civic 3.golf 4. Focus
Make the Civic as an estate, add rear seats split 40:20:40 and game is over.
I definitely think this Civic is worth comparing with more serious competitors. It's just miles away in every aspect, although it shares the same car segment as the Golf or Focus.
I love the way Mat presents the cars in every single detail of them. Very original and accurate. The details make the difference.
You look like a middle aged version of Tom Holland.
And not to forget, driving the Focus is so much fun :D
If I would have to decide between Golf and Astra, I guess I'd take the Golf because it looks at least a little better, especially in the cockpit. But I have to admit that I don't like both interior stylings! Maybe I'd like the Golf more if the 2-screen-panel would be straight instead of offset. But the Astra looks too much technical and there's too much glossy black... I don't like that. It's doesn't make me feel good and cozy.
this is the best car comparison I have seen in my life. Subscribed.

I bought a new Focus a few weeks ago and I love it! The dual clutch gearbox works perfectly in mine
Honda simply knows what they're doing 👍🏻
Would that Astra be a good first day same with new 308 from Peugeot
The boot is the smallest, so no, it won’t swallow everything these others will.
Does the interior hold up tho? Reliability?
Astra is the best looking car by far and the hybrid has some 200HP

I have the impression the Honda is better overall since it is the car they actually want you to buy.
The other brands have more expensive, high-end vehicles they need to market, so an Astra, Focus or Golf can't really get all the good stuff - something has to be kept for the bigger brothers.
Honda seems to not do that - I'm not familiar with the rest of their line-up, but they seem to go all-in (considering the budget of the car), which I quite like
Really glad you rated the Civic top. A great looking car and I've always been a bit of a Japanese fanboy as far as cars go.
for the focus i dont see digital dials as an upgrade, if anything its a downgrade as theres more to go wrong and can be distracting
I'm getting the focus because I know how well it drives . Ford had handling nailed
The new Astra looks AWESOME
Well, as a Golf guy, the Mk8 is a no-go for me. Looks dreadful and I couldn't be assed with that interior/digital set-up. Also...they no longer sell a normal Golf in the U.S. I've been looking to buy a Honda Civic hatchback here instead, but they don't exist either - and no one is selling them at the normal MSRP...so that's a no-go. No Focus in the U.S. either because Ford decided no one drives cars...so that's a no-go. And no Astra here either. So I would buy the Honda Civic - but apparently I'm not allowed to.
