This is the new Skoda Octavia! Now we know that the Czech manufacturer may not be held in such high regard as its German rivals, and they’re not exactly known for being the most exciting cars. @@ranga8038 I’m glad I’m not the only young person who genuinely thinks a newer Skoda would be a good next car, I absolutely love the Scala. It’s just a rebadged cheaper Audi A3, scrolling LED indicators, digital dashboard, brilliant infotainment system, well made interior, it seems like a perfect car but people would turn their noses up / laugh at someone else with one because it’s a ‘Skoda’😂 I don’t know why they can’t shake off ‘that’ reputation when they’re making such clever and well engineered cars 😂

I took one of these (plug in hybrid version) on a roadtrip in Finland from Helsinki all the way up to the northern border to Norway, well beyond the arctic circle, and I also did a similar drive in a Golf 8. And I must say, I was blown away by how much better the Skoda performed. The handling on the frozen and snowy roads was on point, the engine had no struggles at all in the -30C weather and the ride was super comfortable. The Golf wasn’t bad in any way, but the Skoda was so much more spacious, the drive train felt a lot better and the interior felt more comfy.

I think it is clear, that he knows this is probably one of the most practical cars you can buy (for the price or otherwise), but he simply doesn't like it for some reason. It may be styling (though from other reviews I heard quite a lot of positive comments in this regard), it may be brand - Skoda is not the most exciting brand or it may be something else.

    • @tomraymond9795
      @tomraymond9795 3 года назад +23

@@petrkubena He likes to ''hoon'' around doesn't he so perhaps the lack of fun is a deal breaker for him.
I've driven the latest Focus and it is enjoyable to chuck about tbf but the build quality is a bit ropey. On both Ford hire cars I've had (at around 2 yrs old, a focus and a fiests), both had all broken window switches on the drivers door.
Then you have the Civic which is awesome but looks far too rowdy for most.
Corolla? pricey to buy due to hybrid system and not as roomy in the cabin.
You have 1 series and latest A class which are supposed to fun but it's too much to pay for a mid-size hatch.
Golf? just as dull. A3, too dear, not much more dynamic.
Leon? Not much better and less reliable (somehow even with same components)
Ceed and I30 are just OK unless you go for an I30N, which most people won't due to tax and fuel cost.
So... Octavia it is then! Or perhaps a Scala... 1.5 tsi SEL manual can be had for under 20K with a bit of haggling (or a broker discount, anyone know a good car broker!?).

I've had the previous Octavia, the best part about it, is that it's such an underestimated car and brand. Amoung my coworkers, the VW Polo and Golf was the most popular, so Skoda is often looked down upon as "the budget brand". So getting in the car, most people found out that it's actually very similar to the Golf in quality, it has all the options that the other cars had (like a panoramic sunroof) and it was a very comfy car for passengers, especially compared to cars like the A3 and CLA, which look cool, but are horrible for passengers.

I have the current version 1.5 SEL and this does not seem any different except a softer suspension and the frustrating touchscreen air con control. With the current version you just turn easy to find rotary knobs.
He's right about reflective materials being distracting. I had the pre facelift version and the facelift introduced piano black material which reflect sun and street lamps.
All that said, I've had two in a row because it offers value, space, economy and quality. The 1.5 has cylinder deactivation which gives me 10% better fuel consumption than the previous 1.4.

Having had one for 7 months I can confirm the infotainment system is so glitchy, I've decided to sell the car. Skoda dealer having to seek Skoda UK permission to replace the screen. 4th visit to the dealership to get a screen related problem fixed! So frustrating, as we like everything else about the car. But when everything is controlled by the touch screen and the touch screen doesn't respond to a touch, one has a big problem!

Had mine 18 months now. The Emergency SOS system still doesn’t function properly and the ACC had a mind of its own until Skoda fixed it.
    Cons:
The climate controls in the screen are fiddly and dangerous when using while driving, so just don’t! When you adjust the fan speed or turn on the windscreen demister it turns off the sync setting on the dual zone.
The infotainment system sometimes takes forever to turn on or goes off and resets during drives.
    Pros
    It’s roomie AF!
The boot is big enough for my dog (and I own the saloon version)
The 150bhp 1.5 petrol is nippy when driven properly.
The fuel economy is outstanding because of 2-cylinder mode (when you are cruising up to 80mph the car will run on 2-cylinders in eco or normal mode)
I get an average of 60mpg and the most I’ve ever got is 70mpg. In France at 80mph for 4 hours straight it fell to 52mpg.
    The seats are comfortable.
    The virtual cockpit is good.
The matrix headlights are awesome once you are used to them.
It’s a very quiet and relaxed drive.
I do wish I leased something else, but I got this car top of the range SEL model with some extras through car wow on a 4 year, 10,000 miles a year, 3 months up front for £230 a month. I can’t knock that! So, if you are watching this considering it, I would just on the comfort, space, and most of all the fuel economy from the 1.5ltr 150bhp petrol manual.

I'd take boring but practical any day before everything else. We drive new cars for years so after 2,3 months of "exciting" or more interesting one you confess to yourself all the stuff that gets on your nerves but then also "oh no, I still need to pay my monthly payments..."
Trust me, I switched from Octavia to Talisman and while Talisman is way more refined and comfy on the road, looks cool on the outside, also full of tech and youth like ambiental light; it makes me want to cry every time precise visibility is important. Because of the roof line + it has big, full head rests at the back. Camera helps, but that means little when on the road. It's even worse towards front as it doesn't have that low front bonnet (Like Passat, BMW saloons etc.) but rather tall one + again, the "cool" roof line. So mostly you are estimating/guessing where your front is passing. And I'm stuck with it for a 3 more years.
