Valvano took Norm Sloan’s recruits and won a National Championship in 83. Coach K’s Duke team lost that year by 30 points in a rout by Ralph Sampson’s Virginia in the first round of the ACC tournament. I saw three solid years of Coach K hating . I was there in 80-81 when the two top Duke players, Gene Banks and Kenny Dennard, both Bill Foster recruits, treated Coach K with disdain that whole year.
Every spouse should feel that way about their spouse("partner"), that's what marriage is about, love, sacrifice, commitment .... so many people think it's a flavor of the month kind of deal,,,,move on to another, nope,,,,it's taking those vows seriously and loving and honoring that person who stood with you and exchanged those vows! As I type this, these two are about to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary.....my parents made it to 46, but my Dad passed at age 71,,,,,They would be celebrating their 70th this year....they had that same type of love and commitment and passed it on to their five children, as I know Mike and Mickie have done for their three children!
As much as I couldn't stand watching Coach K slapping the floor on defense and the annoying players he recruits, you cannot argue with his success (second only to Wooden really) and that he is a great guy; it doesn't seem like an act and it appears to be genuine.

I've thought for two decades that Coach K is not only a phenomenal coach but also a phenomenal person. He's all about personal integrity, dignity, code of ethics, etc. etc. But what convinces me that he is full of shit is that he has been making tens if not over a hundred million dollars off the backs of talented basketball players who chose to play for him at Duke. Few of them went on to play in the NBA and made some money, but the vast majority of his players ended their basketball career at Duke. If Coach K is the man that everybody says he is, a man of honor, then he should take 20% of all the money he's earned at Duke and he should distribute that money among his players who never made it to the NBA. They worked their asses off so that HE could continue to coach at Duke and keep getting his contract renewed, with more zeros added each time. Don't talk to me about these players getting a free education at a great university. They were there to play basketball. Coach K should be ashamed of himself for pocketing all them millions while his slaves worked for no compensation (if you call free tuition and room and board when you're bringing in a shit load of money to your school, you're just too damn naive). The same goes for Nick Saban, Rick Pitino, Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer, or any other big time college football/basketball coach.
