Thank you to @mikaell.1784!! Here is what to do if you get an Error 1302 using PageIndexer_V2 with Illustrator 2024 version 28.5: Put all text frames in a new layer called 'Index'. The script is going to search in that layer and only that layer to find the codes (, , etc.).
Two other quick tips,
1. I also suggest keeping a copy of that layer as a template if you ever have to update your page numbers.
2. You only have to put a text frame with the variables on your first page. The script automatically puts the same text frame with the corresponding page number in the other pages.

Hi! Could I ask what did I do wrong here as when I tried PageIndexer_V2 and it said "Error 1302: No such element, Line: 25, var lay -> = doc.layers.getByName('Index');", and when I tried the original one (in the vids) it does nothing.
I think Katja, the owner of the script, might not have it updated for newer versions of Illustrator (this is just a guess) - so you could revert to an older version if you need to.

Thank you so much for you and that script writer. I have small question. When i run script it changes the position of text box. I tried using text box and other type text too. But same issue happening. Kindly can you help for that. (I think you explain it in video, but it not clear for me)

I'm not sure why it happens, exactly. But to fix it, you can lock everything else (select and CMD 2 or CTRL 2) and then select all numbers and move them.
@@GDHT It’s hard to do. Need to make one by one. Because need to recenter that page number to page. ☺️ If i send you screen record. Can you send it to the script writer and give me solution? Please. Or is there any other method for create page numbers in illustrator
Your artboards should be in a grid. If not you can change them to a grid with "Rearrange Artboards" in the panel menu. Then you can select all numbers in all artboards in column 1 and align to page. Repeat that process with all other columns. :)

Awesome video thank you. We have a scenario where we're creating 50 artboards but each one needs a large sequential number (different for each board) on it as part of the artwork. It's likely a six or seven digit number. Is there a way of doing that?
You're welcome! I believe you can do data merge, but not with artboards in the same document. Is there a reason you don't want to use InDesign? It's much better equipped to handle multi-page documents like this.
@@GDHT Thank you yes I thought InDesign would definitely be better equipped for this, it's just that this is for wagons that are over eight metres long, so I have to provide the file at minimum 10%. So I don't think I can make the files big enough in InDesign unfortunately.
The difference in max size between the two programs is very similar - I would take a look!

I'm thinking the script hasn't been updated yet so that it can be used with the most recent version of Illustrator.
What if i want the numbering to start ex from 50 not from 1?
I don't think the script allows for that, unfortunately. With many pages, InDesign is a much better option!
@@GDHT i saw your tuttorial about how to place a multipage pdf in indesign, the issue there is that it destoroys the resolution :/
@@basicelement It doesn't actually, though. It's just a low-res preview - when you print or export to PDF, it will be clean and crisp.

using latest versions 27.9 (64bit)
I'm thinking this script must not work with the newest version of Illustrator. You can reach out to the script creator on her website and let her know, and she might be willing to update the script.

I don't think the script creator has updated this for the newer versions of Illustrator - you could revert to an older version, though, and it should work. :)

Oh - no, I meant you can only use this script on older versions of Illustrator. It won’t work on the newest one.
I get the following error 1302 lay var = doc.layers.getbyname("Index")

I got the same problem but to fix this you have to creare a new layer rename to Index and write a page tag here it will work.
I think Katja's script uses an older version of Illustrator. You could also try the suggestion in the previous reply (I haven't tested it though).
